Preferred Solution: Window 7 runs slow and layout looks like window 2000

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Have Acer Aspire 7551 Laptop AMD Phenom II N970 4 GB RAM running Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit which runs very slow, web browsers will not reliably connect and often time out though connected to a viable network. Will not shut down or restart except by on/off button. All software up to date. Have clean Vipre Internet Security, Spy Bot S&D and Malware Bytes. Any ideas?

Which security product is running an active scanner?
Have you run any tests on your RAM or HDD?
Do you have a current backup?
Keep us posted

I apologize if this has been covered ad nauseum, but I've searched through the posts and have generally done everything that was suggested, but my stupid %(#*$&@# laptop is still a complete slug! I'm also a total luddite, so in all reality there's a good chance it's user-error...

Here's my specs:

Sony VAIO 1.66 GHz
2.00 GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo
Vista Home Premium w/ Service Pack 1
60 GB free space on hard drive

I've defragmented the hard drive, changed all the visual settings back to "Windows Classic", I have a ReadyBoost card providing 4 GB of space, I have checked my c:\ drive for errors (and automatically fixed them), and I have Norton 360 installed and have run current drive scans.

I'm stumped. It really seems to be slowing down in the past few months, although I don't think i've downloaded anything of consequence. it just seems to be aging (albeit not gracefully). Now whenever I open a window or program, it will take several seconds (more like 20-30) to start up, and often it will go into "Not Responding" mode before actually starting - this is even with basic Windows programs like the Control Panel.

I'm losing my noodle! Please help before I commit laptop murder!

:) Thank you!!!

A:Vista runs SO slow! Tried numerous things, but I'm ready to toss it out the window..

Vista is no speed champ, but with your specs it should be running better than it is. First off you need to see what is running that is slowing things down. Norton is known for being a resource hog, so start there. There are a few tools to check.
First, open Task Manager, by right-clicking on the task bar at the bottom of the screen. Then clcik on the "Processes" tab. This shows you a list of everything running on the pc. Find the "Show processes from all users" button and click it. You will get a security warning, just hit continue. Now you will notice there are a lot more processes. These are all the system processes. Look through the list and check the "memory" column. See what process is using the most memory. If you don't reconize the process, just google it.
Another tool you can use is the cpu monitor inside the sidebar. Just "add gadgets" to the sidebar. I think it is called cpu monitor. Anyway, this will show you current cpu usage and memory usage (memory is the smaller gague).
This will give you a start on getting to what is hogging up your resources.

Hope this helps!

Thanks

I followed every step of your Slow Computer checklist:

1. Updated Spybot, Avast and AVG and then scanned in Safe Mode. Very slow performance. It took me half a day.
2. I revised all my programs in Add/Remove Programs and removed those that have not been used for over 2 years.
3. Revised startup applications with Autoruns and removed some which I thought wasn't necessary.
4. Cleaned my Desktop.
5. Used Window's Disk Cleanup.
6. Defragmented my computer.
My computer is still very slow comparing. Even my wife says so.

For a few months all the Office tools I use (Work, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) start with a long pause, 10 to 20 sec for the tool and another for the actual document. If I start the Office tools from a desktop icon it appears in under a sec, as it should on my system. The effect delay is the same if I'm on online or offline. Other applications, like Quicken, don't have a pause.

The only "recent" change has been to replace an old Lexmark Z54 printer with a Dell A940. Interesting feature the Dell A940 is that it was made by Lexmark, uses Lexmark ink and most of the software the old Z54 did. They just changed the ink cardtridge shapes, duh. NotePad from MS doesn't have a startup lag.

It seems to me like some "option or feature" in Windows Explorer is timing out before it will pop the tool and then the document. I run with MS OS and Office automatic updates OFF so my system should be XP SP2 with few if any system updates. However, AOL and the printer / camera software I use, DELL and HP, do get updated from time to time.

I moved off Symantec (Nortons) for the first time in almost 20 years to go with Kaspersky in early '08. Have used Lavasoft AdWare Plus for 2 years. The HijackThis listing shows two entries from Symantec, one with file missing. I guess Symantec didn't do a clean uninstall, but that is one of the reasons I moved to another vendor. I am not sure how to explain this, Up until last week, whenever I download something and save as to a folder, it becomes really slow and my brower freezes for 1 minute ish. I checked my processor and ntoskrnl.exe is the program thats taking most of the physical memory.

I am not sure exactly is going on. I did try to scan with malware and antivirus, but nothing showed up.

Any ideas?

A:Window becomes really slow when opening a save as window.

Hello Faering Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Quite annoying isn't it?! I run into that enough at times simply having a second browser window kept option. Suddenly everything will suddenly freeze up! I ran into that with IE 8, 9, 10, 11 as well as with Waterfox the first 64bit variant of Firefox as well as with Cyberfox, the latest 64bit FF versions, and other browsers as well not being a result of any malwares! At times between the host ISP and sites as well as the browser itself things will tend to bog down.

The download or other sites may be seeing heavier traffic at the time you go to download some new app and explain why a site is slow going. Your ISP(Internet Service Provider) could be seeing heavier then usual traffic as well which can explain slow downs as well. A combination of browser issues, slow down of host provider, and other sites put together is trouble!

I always have multiple browser windows open, each with multiple tabs. I keep my windows in a logical order, for example my first window is my main work window with all web pages I need to work.

However, after a few weeks of using Chrome my windows changed order and now I have to waste time constantly finding what is where.

Is there a way to either:
1. Stop the windows getting mixed up (Firefox has the same bug but it's far more frequent in FireFox)
2. A way to easily and manually put the windows back in the order I want them in

So far my only solution is to manually copy and paste each tab url from the first window to a new one and then rebuild my original tab list in the first window which of course is lot of work and wasted time (but less than spending 20 seconds finding each window all the time).

Thank you

A:Google Chrome mixes my window layout

I always have many Chrome windows open and it keeps recycling windows so new pages can open in a window in the middle of my screen, it's then impossible to find in which window it opened forcing me to open it again in another window.

I'm really sick of all these browsers having one problem or another, why is it so hard to make a user friendly browser?

Hi everyone. I have a problem and I'll be thankful to anyone who'll offer a solution, if there's one.
So: I'm a user of Windows 8.1. Since I'm a Hebrew speaker, most of my programs' upper menu lines are written from right to left. The problem is the three basic window commands (close, enlarge, minimize) are displayed on the left side of the window, and that really disrupts the fluidity operating the system. Is there any way to change it and set
right-appearing window-commands as default? tried fiddling with preferences myself but couldn't find such an option.

Thank you again for your time and effort.

Amit Nagari.

A:Hi all.Question: Changing layout of basic window-commands.

No, not in Windows - not without a 3rd-party program. Don't know of any off-hand for your problem. It is strange that it interferes with the writing... or is it just your preference?

Sorry I couldn't be more help

(First, sorry, I am very new to version 7)

I have an application that has worked pretty well on all previous versions of Windows, but now have a user on Windows 7 that is reporting the following behavior. I dont know if this is 7 issue or not, as the app is running on 7 systems also, tho not very many.

When they launch the program by doubleclicking the icon, an expected pop-up message appears (pertaining to software registration), and then instead of the main program window appearing, nothing does. But there is an icon for the program on the taskbar (clicking does nothing) and the process is running in the task list.

Internally, before the main program shows its form, it calls a registration DLL to check that out (hence the pop-up), and then continues with its start-up sequence.

Is there some situation peculiar to 7 that might be blocking the program from starting correctly?

Win 7 does have some additional security measures. We could tell you more if we knew something about the app.

win 7 has UAC (user account control) it may be interfering

Your app may need to be run (or installed) in compatibility mode.

A:Window Installer runs on start-up

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Now make a backup or a Restore Point. You're about to make changes to your system, and if something gets screwed up, you'll want to be able to recover, right?

Locate and run msicuu2.exe to install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Locate and launch the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on the Start menu.
From the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility window, scan the list looking for something that appears to be Corel Paint or Sonic related.
Locate the application in the list and click the Remove button.

Once you're certain you've found the right thing ... remove it.

Once the application has been removed, click the Exit button to close the utility.

Now reboot, and see if that didn't make the problem go away. In many cases if you've selected the correct item it will.

However, when I sent it by gmail to my Laptop (vista) the autoupdate which collects data from internet doesn't run on vista.
Data is intended to reach a sheet named "download "and then transfer data to a sheet named "database".

As I said it works fine on Windows 7 so is there an issue between the 2 versions or what?
Thanks

A:Solved: Code that runs on Window 7 won't run on Vista

One of the problem I encounter when wb hangs is when array is not correctly defined.
eg. array (20 to 10)
or when array has 10 elements but array(i) is array(80).
Do a step in or part of codes until your wb hangs.
Then see if range or array referencing is correct with debug.print or msgbox.

Just curious, is the transfer from Windows NT Server 4 to Windows 2000 w/ Active Directory on a network...is it stressful or is it me? My servers have 2000 server but my main ones still have NT4. I just completed my PDC transfer to Active Directory. It seems to get annoying. I know it gets better once all servers run 2000 in Native Mode. Would this be a correct assumption? I just want to here from people that went through this process. Thank you

A:Windows NT to Window 2000 w/AD

When you say that your "main" servers are NT4, what do you mean? Are your Domain controllers all NT4 except for the "PDC" that you upgraded to w2k? What is getting annoying? The best advise for having a rollback plan is to take an NT4 BDC offline and promote it to a PDC with the SAM intact. Leave it offline until you are sure that the migration has been successful with no annoying behavior. Then, upgrade that one to a w2k server and rejoin the network. This way, if at any time you decide the w2k is not going well, you can remove the w2k DCs from the network and put the NT4 PDC back on and rebuild your BDCs as there is no demotion of a w2k server with AD allowed.

Hope this helps! Post back as to what you are most concerned about.

A:Outlook 2000 runs slow for ONLY ONE of the 5 users - Why?

Do you have something running that other family members do not have? Like sharing program (music, photo, etc.). Remember that these malware (MNSHO ) utilities are allowing the world (anyone running the same utility) to access and download info from your system. Your symptom occurred to my niece because her eldest had loaded Limewire. This made using online education impossible because of the online traffic jam. Removing Limewire solved the problem.

When you start Outlook, look at the Statusbar where it is showing downloading of email. Could there be a large email that never gets fully downloaded? Usually it's one with an attachment. Your symptom happens to me at work, with large downloads.

Hi all!

I'm building a FrontPage 2000 website to display pictures of a recent vaca trip. I want the pictures to open in a new window when a user clicks on the thumbnail. However, when I preview the site, the new window opens at only half the size of the picture.

How can I force the new window to be big enough for the picture? If I have to force the new window to be maximized, I will, but I prefer to have it just big enough to avoid slider bars.
Thanks,
-tim

HI,

A few files on my hard drive where corrupted, so I decided to fdisk the drive and reinstall windows 2000.

I created 4 windows 2000 repair/setup disks (floppy) on another IMB (570E) and boot off them.

When I try and swap out the floppy drive to put in the cd-rom drive so my windows 2000 disk can be accessed, I get a screeching sound and cannot access the drive.

Any ideas ??

TIA

Shaggy

Hi All,

This isn't causing me problems , but is annoying.

I'm not aware of having changed anything but this has started to happen:

I click on Excel Help, then get the assistant panel, type in a search phrase, select from the list of possible responses, then the Help Window that appears is positioned top left and is only the Title Bar. I ythen have to maximise it.

Plesae see the attached immage.

Is there a setting somewhere this dictates this action?

Thanks

Hew

Hew, if you resize (instead of maximise, but as large as you need), does it then "look OK" subsequently?

I just upgraded from w/98 1st edition to w/2000 professional. When the computer reboots and gets to the logon I enter the password and it says saving system settings, then goes back to the logon screen. I enter the password again and same thing, it just continues looping through this. I'm sure I'm using the right password cause when I enter the wrong one it says check username and password. When I enter the right password it just starts the loop again. I could really use some help on this please. Thanks

Our work just upgrade my computer to Windows 2000 (ecel, etc.) Now when I open multiple files in excel or acces or word, I get the one task bar "icon" / place holder for each file opened. Before, with 97 there was only the orginal Excel window you opened and then any other files of the same program were listed in the "windows" menu...anyone know how to get rid of the multiple windows palce holders?

Thanks!

A:Multiple Window of same program in Win 2000

Cool. Raiders. Good luck.

multiple task bar buttons?

IT'S A NEW FEEECHER!!!!

LOL!!

YOu can turn it off in Excel, under Tools-Options (I forget which tab, View?) and then uncheck "windows in taskbar".

They never did put an option to turn it off for Word. It's a FEEECHER. LOL

XP allows the option in both Word and Excel.

Hello
Small but annoying problem. I'm using Outlook 2000, and when I surf the internet, and find a page I want to send to someone via outlook, I click tools->mail and news->send Page (from IE 6sp1). Anyway, the email window that pops up is small, I want this to be maximized.
After I send a page using these steps, all my emails that open up are small until I maximize them again. It doesn't matter what I do, I can manually resize them and all will be fine until I send page using these steps, then it's all small again. I've tried to re-size the small window that pops up after I send page, but the next time I send page again, it's small. Is there a fix for this somewhere?

PS. this happens on multiple computers using W2k Pro and XP Pro

My computer shut itself down and as it restarted it hung on the windows progress bar and reverted to a blue screen with the following message: Stop: 0X00000024 NTFS- File System Address BFFS78A2 base at BFEF 3000
Date stamp 3edebe95 NTFS.SYS. Nothing I have tried will reboot it. I will not do anything but the blue screen. I have virus protection and firewall. It will not even boot from the Windows 2000 CD to check for errors or even reformat.

I found out accidentally my window server 2000 has a virus when I go into its network folder from another pc and found two hidden files (autorun.inf and jwgkvsg.vmw in a hidden recycler folder). I try downloading the following tools to help

1. FixDownadup.zip - pop up and closed off by itself immediately
2. anti-Downadup-EN.zip - pop up and closed off by itself immediately
3. Window Malicious Removal Tool - pop up and closed off by itself immediately
4. Spybot - Cannot detect
5. Super Anti Spyware - Cannot detect
6. Symantec End Point Protection - can't do a live update or detect
7. Recycler Remove - Cannot detect

I tried to go into safe mode, but I would end up with the blue screen of death (BOD).

I tried to enter into the safe mode, but the computer can't and still hang.
I wish to cancel installing window 2000 and prevent my computer from entering the setup mode every time i reboot.
