Switching from Category to Classic View ----lost feature in Control Panel ??

Q: Switching from Category to Classic View ----lost feature in Control Panel ??

For some apparent reason I have lost the ability to change windows views ( From Category View to Classic View and vice versa ) . Normally when I click Start / Control Panel -- I would get a window that comes up and on the left side of the page I could switch between views . I believe the Box was identified as Control Panel and one view was listed and if you switched views the window would change to that view . All I have now on the left side is a box that says SEE ALSO with " Windows Update" and "Help & Support " listed under the heading . All my icons are listed to the right of this . Can anyone help me get the control Panel switching header option back .??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Been messing with this for days. When I open the Control Panel I do not have the option to switch the view on the left side pane. All that is there is the See Also window. I went to view, Toolbar, Customize and added the views icon to the toolbar. As long as I keep the customize toolbar box open and move it up or down I can see it on the toolbar. Once I close the Customize Toolbar window the view icon grays out on the tool bar. My back button is the same way. I checked in another users window and the control panel is fine. I have Windows XP SP3. I am the Admin on the PC. Any help would be great.

When I go to the Control Panel and select Category view (if Not already selected) and then select "Printers and Other Hardware" my machine displays the "Encountered a Problem and must close" window, gives me the option to send an "Error Report" and then closes the Control Panel window. It does not do this in the classic view until I back out and then it does it there also. I also get a "Dr Watson Post Mortem DeBugger window" afterwards.

Any suggestions?

A:How to change icons when seing control panel in Category View?

Like this

They are in a Icon folder in the imagere.dll in C:\Windows\System32 & if you are using 64 bit it's in both C:\Windows\System32 & C:\Windows\SysWOW64
1st do this System Restore Point - Create
Make copy's of imagere.dll and put on the desktop and edit the .ico images with something like Gimp each .ico has layers to it edit each layer then you need to Take Ownership Shortcut then Permissions - Allow or Deny Users and Groups and rename the imagere.dll in C:\Windows\System32 & if you are using 64 bit it's in both C:\Windows\System32 & C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to imagere.bak.dll and put the imagere.dll you edited in there and restart your PC

Hi Everybody,

If anybody could give me some pointers on my problem I would really appreciate it

I have Windows 8.1 on my HP Pavilion Laptop. I have this problem where after starting my PC, logging in and being dropped into the Panel view, I wait for about 10 seconds... and then the PC starts thrashing and constantly flicking between the traditional Desktop and the Panel view without me touching a button / clicking on anything!

The only things I can access on my laptop are:

Task ManagerGoogle Chrome (by clicking on the icon very quickly in Panel View before it flicks back to traditional Desktop)

This problem literally prevents me accessing anything else. As soon as I start opening something in traditional desktop mode, the pc flicks straight back to Panel view and it is lost! Even if I am quick enough to click on an application, it doesn't even load it!

I am almost certain it is some piece of software that I must have picked up along the way. I've been trying to use my Norton antivirus to scan and detect it... but I cannot even open that to scan, due to this very problem.

I even tried using the Trend Micro Home Call service, which I could access through Chrome of course. Unfortunately as soon as I tried downloading it I was told it had failed as there is no access to the internet(!?) very odd indeed.

I have not encoutered any details of this problem on the internet but if anybody could assist with this I would appreciate it so much! Thank you guys

I am an extremely new user of Windows 7 Premium edition and am not a computer guru, but a fairly experienced user of XP Pro, and I use my computer as a tool not a toy. I am very busy trying to make a living and would just like to be able to see my Control Panel and folders and files in the classic view that I am accustomed to. I really don't have the time to start learning to do everything differently, and when I go to the help menu it seems to give me instructions for how this is done with Vista not Windows 7. This is really stressing me out, and I just need to get back to a production mode.

I don't have the start up disk and am hoping that I won't have to pay for a new one. I have run McAfee anti-virus and several programs for asware and malware and found no viruses or anything that might have caused this. I don't know much about computers so this is really annoying me. Try the fix at Kelly's Korner.Windows XP Style Changes to Windows Classic - #214 on the right.Right click on it and save the .reg file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to merge it into your registry. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

Hi Brink.
I was looking through your beautiful picture gallery of tutorials and noticed an omission on this item.
I am sure many users wish to keep their selected view. Your tip only allows the view for that session only, or at least on my computer. Fwiw, that "Other site" states that next time you open the Control Panel, your selected view is retained. That is not so. To make the view permanent, the user must right click the Control Panel window and select "Set as Default View...."

I can't view Nvidia Control Panel nor I can't update either..

First I wanted to get the updated driver of my NVIDIA driver here:

Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

I went to their site, got the 195.62 version window 7 x64 (I have windows 7 x64 installed) it would download a bit and then My screen would go black and a lil music note would play, my screen would turn on after it ends and the installing window would finish but it would say:

InstallShield Wizard Complete
The system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run the installation again.

Click Finish to exit the wizard

I quickly assume, maybe something is blocking it? , I disable my firewall, my AV and it's firewall, and User Account Control Settings, I lowered it to Never notify.

I rebooted, tried again, same thing happens. So I thought maybe it isn't comparable? but I have a GTS 250 NVIDIA geforce, with windows 7 x64, and downloaded the one with those specifications ofc.

Not only that but from the beginning I couldn't view NVIDIA control panel either.

When I click NVIDIA control Panel, a pop up says"

The NVIDIA Display Panel Extension cannot be created.

Possible reasons include:
Version mismatch. Resintalling display drivers may solve this problem.

I been thinking of maybe erasing my NVIDIA drivers and reinstalling, but I'm afraid it won't download or "allow" me to download the driver of NVIDIA to make my graphic card work as it is now... ... Read more

Control Panel.

I have lost my default view of the Control Panel. The one that comes with Vista and Windows 7.

Begins with Adjust your computers settings - then the first one is System and Security.

Now all I have is the Classic View.

I just installed Norton Antivirus 2010 and I don't have a clue if that software did this.

Anyway, how to I get my default or standard view of the Control Panel back?

There is no place to click on the 'classic view' to change anything.

A:Control Panel - Default View

Norton 2010 would not (or least should not) have changed it. Mine never has.

If Im understanding you correctly, you should be able to open control panel, and in top right corner expand the view and choose category.

After starting my Windows 8.1 laptop, if I go to the Control Panel\Network and Internet\View Network Computers and Devices, a device is listed that is not on my network.  It is listed as either a Ralink wireless client Model # RT286U or a full_ariel Model KFARWI and if I right click on the device and view the properties the Model #, Name, and MAC Address are shown. I checked the Device Manager and it was not listed in the Device Manager. Also, my router did not show it as an attached device. I have Win 8.1 laptop, a Win 7 laptop, an iphone, android phone, ipad, WD NAS, and HP wireless printer connected to a Netgear AC wireless router with MAC address filtering enabled. When I log into the router I have never seen either device mentioned above listed on the router list of attached devices nor do any of the devices I have on my network have the MAC address listed for either device.  After a short period of time the device disappears. I have set up my network as a private network.  My concerns are: Are the devices a security issue and can they access my network?  How come my computer detects them? The devices do not list either a work group or a network location so am I correct in assuming the devices are not connecting through my router? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from being detected?

Hi everyone,

I have the following problem: My Control Panel keeps using the Classic View instead of the Control Panel Home view. I checked the tutorial about this subject:
HTML Code:

I tried the second way (Through the Registry: Through a Download), as i have Vista Home Premium, but when I right-click the Restore_Default_CP_View, it doesn't show Merge (actually, I'm not sure, because I don't have an enlish version...). The other way (The Manual Way) doesn't work either, because I don't have the file HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. When I click Policies, it only shows one more folder, called system. The Explorer file doesn't seem to be there. I tried running as administrator, but that didn't work either.

Thanks a lot!
