Offline Files - TMP Files getting created and cannot be deleted

Q: Offline Files - TMP Files getting created and cannot be deleted

Hi,
I already searched through alot of threads but could not find anyone having the exact same issue.
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 which is hosting a DFS Namespace.
A customer of us works with his notebook (Win 7 SP 1) and has enabled Offline Files for his personal folder
in the DFS path. The initial synchronisation seemed to work and no sync errors are reported in Sync Center.

Now the problem is, everytime he opens a document from his DFS path and saves it, a .tmp file gets
created there and doesnt disappear. Not even after reboot. As far as i know it happens with Word, Excel and PDF documents.

If I log on to the server and browse to his path, i cannot see those .tmp files, only he can see it.
If I try to delete those files from his notebook I get an error "File is no longer located in... Verify the item´s location and try again".
What I have tried so far:
If Offline Files get disabled, those .tmp files disappear. On activating they are visible again.
Tried "Delete temporary files" from Sync Center -> Manage Offline Files -> Disk Usage. Nothing happened.
I tried to repair Office, didn´t help.
The only Group Policy Settings we have relating to Offline Files are "Synchronize all offline files before logging off"
and "Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files Feature" which is enabled.

Would be nice if someone can get me into the right direction to fix this issue.
If more information is needed let me know.

Preferred Solution: Offline Files - TMP Files getting created and cannot be deleted

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
I've got a situation here whereby .TMP files are appearing in network directories, and the files are going missing. The size of the TMP file matches the original file.
I'm trying to narrow down the issue, because I think there may be two problems here.
1. Offline Files are enabled, to allow profile redirection.    It seems that this is also by default, is allowing Clinet Side Caching when there are network issues.  Does the original file (.doc for example)  get renamed
as a HR234.TMP for example when the Slow link detection sees slow performance?
2.  If the above TMP file is created when there are network issues, should this resolve itself (sync itself back to the network) when performance improves?
Currently we are in a situation where we have a department that have files missing from many network shares, all the missing files seemlingly replaced with a .TMP file, so do we have to go round to every machine in the department, and manually
sync them to resolve this?

Hi,

After checking the Hotfixes and Security Updates included in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 in the

Documentation for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932), I found the following hotfix is available:

Temporary files do not synchronize correctly to a non-DFS share on a server from a client computer
that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

I have two systems, one with vista ultimate 32bit and the other vista 64bit home premium.

I have decided to run Kaspersky internet security + Malwarebytes (scanner only) + SUPERantispyware (scanner only) on both

Maybe Truealarm force field when a 64bit version comes out, not going to run it now though.

My question is that I have read that these programs create files or something that are not erased on their own. Is this true and if so what is the best program to take care of this?

Thanks!

Please Help. Any help is appreciated. and Thank You.

Today to help a user in my company, I had to run Microsoft's Offline Fix Tool on a Windows 7 Machine. Some issue with
the network, the laptop did not sync. and my bad, I didn't notice in the sync center . After running the tool User's a month old data is lost. I was unable to locate the files anywhere in the Snapshot folders in the server. Since it's a corporate environment
and a bank I cannot run any unauthorized tools to recover the data.

Offline files are stored in Windows\CSC folder. Please help me in understanding two things.

1) If we run Offline fix, will that delete the files from CSC folder?

2) Incase, If it's there, but to access the CSC folder you need to take Ownership. Not able to access the folder even
with my admin credentials. If we take ownership of that folder will it affect the synchronization in future?

Hi,
I'm sitting with a big issue at a customer and ask for your help.
Environment:
- 3x Windows 2008 R2 file servers configured in DFS
- approx. 500x Windows 7 clients (Laptops)
- 3x network shares, Common1, Common2 and Homefolder.
- "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection" enabled for entire user profile.
- Everything is controlled by GPOs and there are no login scripts.
Symptom:
Due to some faulty settings in the client GPO and the fact that the "Common" shares was set to allow Offline Caching of files and folders, the majority of clients now suffer from sync issues and conflicts.
Most of the conflicted files are located in the users home folder, but some users are also seeing the same issues with files located on the "Common" shares. The users themselfes are not allowed to enable Offline Files as this is disabled by GPOs.
The only folders that should be treated as Offline Files are the ones in the users home folder.
Solution:
A new set of GPOs have been created that correctly set up "Offline Files" and "Folder Redirection". These are linked to a test-OU and the computers and users applied to that OU are not suffering from the problems above.
Question:
When we move a client, the cache will be deleted and all non-sync'd work will be lost.
Today we manually look at every users sync center and try to resolve the conflicts before we move them to the new OU. This is extremely time consuming when... Read more

Hello,

I ran into an issue with a user's computer. Initially, he was experiencing problems with the computer running slow. A previous technician diagnosed the issue and decided to run Combofix to clear any issues that might be causing this. However, in running Combofix, the files in the folder C:/windows/csc folder/d6 or %systemroot%/csc folder/d6 were treated as malware and moved to C:/Qoobox/Quarantine/C/Windows/csc folder/d6 and renamed with the extension .vir. In doing so, the user has lost some of his data. Although the data represents files on a share drive on a server, in syncing the share drive's files in order to make them available offline, some of those files were lost. Well, at least that's how it seems as the user's files seemed to have disappeared around the same time Combofix was run.

We've tried a system restore to the day BEFORE Combofix was run to no avail. We've also tried to use batch file renaming programs as we made copies of the files in the Quarantine in order to get them out of quarantine and rename them without the .vir extension, put them back in their original folder and resync, but that did not work. The Windows resynchronization process reports that some of the files can't be restored because the user is not connected to the server, even though he is. Nonetheless, after that attempt, the files that were missing are still missing.

The files themselves vary from Excel spreadsheets to Word documents. The scan was perfo... Read more

Symptoms

Last Saturday, I was surfing the net as usual. But then suddenly, my browser (IE 8) shutted itself down, twice.

After rebooting my machine, I realized my notepad files that I saved as UTF-8 encoding have become unreadable text or alien language text.

Later, I noticed the set of these 3 files on each of many of my folders :
1. DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.html
 DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.HTML   8KB
  5 downloads
2. DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.txt
 DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.TXT   4.04KB
  4 downloads
3. an internet shortcut named DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION (I right clicked to see its properties. Its URL is http://kpai7ycr7jxqkilp.totortoweb.com/d07a )

Many of my files that have the following extensions are broken :
1. txt
2. pdf
3. MP3
4. flv
5. JPEG

A few days ago, before I came to post here, I downloaded Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool and scanned my laptop. The result said something like, there are some files that have password protection. I myself don't know how to create a password to protect my file. So, who did that?

Another symptom is, sometimes my laptop freezes and when I reboot it, I got the blue screen.

My offline files seems to work offline all the time, even when it shows me being online. I sync most of my business files to my laptop for working at home at night.

When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.

It seems that if someone else edits something on the network share, it does update to my laptop, but when I update something, it doesn't transfer so that everyone else can use it?

Where should we begin looking?

A:Offline files doen't update files changed locally

It may help if you enable transparent caching which can be enabled through Group Policy. I'm not sure this is the same problem but it seems to apply to your problem.

Windows 7 introduces a new feature for Offline Files & Folders called “Transparent Caching”. With transparent caching, the first time a user opens a file in a shared folder, Windows 7 reads the file from the server and then stores it in a cache on the computer’s hard disk drive.

The second and subsequent times a user reads the same file, Windows 7 retrieves the cached file from disk instead of reading it from the server. To provide data integrity, Windows 7 always contacts the server to ensure the cached copy is up-to-date.

The cache is never accessed if the server is unavailable and updates to the file are always written directly to the server. Transparent Caching is not enabled by default and can be enabled through Group Policy at Computer configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Offline Files | Enable Transparent Caching.

Hello all,
I've deployed  Offline files through group policy and setted up slow link when connection speed is below 10Gbps, just everytime.
Folder si offline but when I add new file the file is synced to server within 10 or 20 minutes. I've checked last sync interval but it didn't change. It isn't same as time when file was uploaded to server. Last sync was eq. 16:00 but file was uploaded at
16:15.
Folder is still offline. How is it possible?
THank you.

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I have been Googling all over the place last couple of days and looking through hundreds of regkeys but cannot find the answer.

We have 1800 PC's using Offline files to a NAS location. Even though the Group Policy is set to force PC's Offline no matter what the latency value. I have noticed some PC's that have Offline files enabled but are set to work online. Maybe set manually
before the GPO was applied. Anyway I was wondering if there is a way to detect on numerous PC's whether a PC is set to work Offline or Online? I have been looking to see if a regkey changes when the Work Offline / Online button is pressed on the file menu
of the redirected folder.

I have found a key that changes if you hit the button Work Online/ Offline button
manually HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache\OnlineTransitionLog Value - (name of nas share) but this clears when the PC is rebooted or logged out and does not reappear unless you do the switch again manually.
This will not work when I try to scan all the PC's.

Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Started a new account, with admin privileges. Deleted old account also with admin privileges. Selected the "KEEP FILES" option. Deleted account. A folder pops up in desktop, with the computer's name. Under that folder there was another folder with old user name, and under that folder there was yet another folder also with old user name. Completely empty.

I don't have a restore point to which to retrieve my files. The c:\ disk says there is 600GBs of free space, previously I had only 300. All the library from my old user account have been wiped. I also checked Recycle Bin which is empty. The current account has admin privileges and is set to show hidden files. I was told that it might be under c:\Users. I checked that with CMD and two folders were titled "." and "..", they don't show under file explorer.

I am running Recuva right now, but from what I understand that won't be able to restore file names and fragmented files, which are both critical. I also had an encrypted file with a none standard extension which might be ignored by Recuva.

Hello Abe, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm not sure what went wrong, but this is a perfect example of why you should always back up anything that you do not want to lose first to be safe.

I hope Recuva may be able to recover your files for you.

Did you have any system images or Windows backups to restore them from?

OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1

And then Changed this entry to 1:

Hi there,

Two windows 7 ultimate computers are connected to same location ex.: \\file-server\common-files\

When "computer1" save word, excel, or power point files in \\file-server\common-files\test\test.doc "computer2" see that file with the name like HU87GH.TMP
The file size is correct, however, the file remains unusable from computer2.

What could be the probl?m?

Many thanks for your time.

Is the network location a NAS (synology, qnap etc) ?

I have the same problem with a Synology DS209+II and I suspect it has to do with Windows not being able to communicate properly with samba shares, even though the newest Firmware (DSM 3.0) explicitly allows you to activate "Support for Windows Offline Files".

I had a home user come to the office and she was having trouble getting on our network. I turned off off-line files because she doesn't need to sync files to the office on this computer when she comes in anymore on that computer.

Come to find out she was storing all her personal files on the offline drive that we create for each individual here and set it up as offline so files are backed up here in the office.

I have told her to turn off her laptop and do nothing else on it until I look at it. Is there a way to get all those files back that went away when I turned off the offline files? I don't want to do anything until I am sure I make the best move knowing that once those deleted files are overwritten on the hard drive they may still be recoverable in some way.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to get these files back on her hard drive. Just to be clear they were all on the offline folder of a network drive. I turned off off-line files and they were never syncronized up to the server before I did it.
Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

Sorry if this is in the wrong section!

I recently got a new additional desktop at office that has Windows 7 Professional loaded on it. I use my laptop as the primary computer, but need to start using the desktop for other routine activities.

I need to run a vbs/exe file in the background, as soon as the Windows loads up. I copied few files and everything works well. I had saved the program along with the vbs & exe file in 'C:/Program Files/New Doc' (no specific reason). But when I restart my desktop, all the files get deleted. I was reading online about this and I figured, this could be because Windows 7 is booting on the network? I am not sure, but that explains why all the files I download get wiped/deleted on the next restart.

I was wondering if you can help me out in three things:

1) Can you confirm if Network Boot is the reason why files are getting deleted?

2) Assuming Win 7 is working on Network boot, is there a folder/location where in which, the file I save are not deleted in the next restart?

3) My main concern is that, I need to run this VBS/Exe file on Windows startup, but because all the files get deleted on start up, I can't put the file in the Startup folder or use the Task Scheduler or Group Policy to get this file working on Startup.

Thanks a lot in advance. Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: As this is a desktop that is going to be shared with 2 more colleagues, I don't want use a USB or other external drives to run the file vbs/exe file.... Read more

A:Files get deleted with Network Boot (Need autostart of files)

It sounds like you may have Time Freeze, Returnil, or some other "sandbox" software running that uses the Shadow Service to divert downloads and file copies to a cache rather than the actual disk drive folder. When the system is booted the cache is discarded. Files all gone.

Try downloading and running AutoRuns and look for these programs. If you don't see any I mentioned then you may have to search on any you don't recognize.

Hi, I used Puran to recover some deleted files from my external hard drive and when I open some of the files I get the following message:

"This document could not be registered . It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document."

The documents still fully open and they look like they are all there. Also, when I look at the properties of some of the folders they say there is 0 bytes in them. I did the recovery twice, once selectively with only the files that I thought I needed such as .doc and .pdf, and again with everything including files such as .cab . chm .dwg .hlp .mdf. Two identical recovered folders from each recovery say they have a different amount of data in them.

My question is: are there supporting files that need to be recovered along with the .doc and .pdf files to fix the issues and to make sure i have recovered everything, such as the .cab .chm etc?  I didnt the extra files were necessary but on further research they might be files needed by word. Are they only needed for the program and not individual files?

Check if the service "DCOM Server Process Launcher" is set to Automatic and running. Start->Run->type Services.msc, scroll down until you find the service. Also check to make sure the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" service is set to Automatic and running.

Okay, I am assuming that you can login to windows just fine so...

1. Start Menu
2. Run
3. Type in: sfc /scannow
4. System will check for corrupted/ missing files. It will prompt you to insert your XP install cd if a file is missing.
5. It will take a while to run, but it whould be worth it :)

I found a similar problem reported on your site. I have deleted thousands of dll that were 93,184 bytes or 0 bytes in size. However, I need to get rid of what's creating them. This is my son's computer and it hasn't bee used in a few weeks but this worm filled up the C: drive. I ran Hijack This and I'll put the log in this post.

Thanks,

I upgraded to Win10/Office 2016 from Win7/Office 2013. At the same time, I changed my web mail (Gmail) from POP3 to IMAP. Since the upgrade, Outlook creates *.ost data files instead of *.pst data files.

As far as I am able to determine, *.ost files are a product of or are otherwise related to an Exchange server, with which I am not associated., i.e., I am using my home custom PC. I also log in to Win10 with a local (vs. Microsoft) account. In Outlook, Work Offline in Send/Receive preferences is grayed out and red Xed; the Outlook icon in the task bar is also red Xed.

All of my searches about this issue relate it to Outlook behavior with an Exchange server. Not being on an Exchange server, I can find no solutions. When I first set up Win10, I logged on using a MS account but no longer do so. Nevertheless, I am wondering if I am tied to MS servers.

My question: however I accomplish it, how do I tweak Outlook to create *.pst data files instead of the *.ost data files.

Thanks for your consideration,

Monk

A:Outlook *.ost files being created instead of *.pst

Hi Monk,
*.pst files are for POP3 accounts, whilst *.ost files are for IMAP accounts. Nothing to worry about - everything's fine.

Hello there bleepingcomputer.com, I'm Edoardo and I've been infected by some strange piece of malware. It attached to most of my dll files, exe files, even htm and html files! Not sure about the rest. And when playing certain games, for example, call of duty 4: Modern Warfare, it would create a "srv" copy of the exe that was being ran; for instance, I was using "iw3mp.exe", and when ran, it would generate "iw3mpSrv.exe", which MalwareBytes would detect as "Malware.Packer" and then delete. So what I did was, after many attempts with MalwareBytes (which would detect just a couple of files), was trying out DrWeb CureIt software, and it found a lot of infected files, I just clicked on "Neutralize" and rebooted the system. I'm not sure if the infection is gone though. I'd like technical help if possible.

Because I don't want Flash Player Utilities running at startup I have renamed the 2 files that run at startup:

C:\Windows\System32\Macrome\FlashUtil_ActiveX.dll
and
C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\FlashUJtil_ActiveX.exe

Somehow they got created again. The ones I renamed are still there but somehow the original files are back in the folder again.

I want this disabled!
There are no references to this in any of the 'Run' registry entries and I don't see a Service for this either.
Anyone have an idea how to prevent this annoying piece of garbage from recurring?

James

FYI, I have them running as well. The run at startup may be required for the Flash program to function properly when you open your browser. I also see no easy way to disable it; and, if disabled, Flash might not function properly work when you opened your browser and surfed to a site that requires Flash. With that said, if you don't like it running at start-up, and you don't need Flash, why not just uninstall it? Good luck.

A:strange files being created

Randomly named alpha/numeric folders are commonly created and used temporarily when updating Windows components. They are also used by some software programs (i.e. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visual Studio, etc) during update or installation to hold setup files (.inf, .cat, .gpd, .ppd and .dlls) and other information. These files and folders are usually automatically removed as part of the update process. However, its not uncommon for them not to be cleaned up and left behind after the update has been applied. When that occurs they usually can be manually deleted at any time. For example, when you run the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT), a temporary folder with random alpha/numeric characters (i.e. C\79f142e5e9e574d23954) will be created on your C:\ drive that contains mrt.exe, mrtstub.exe and a file named $shtdwn$.req. Since external drives can be a hiding place for malicious files, MSRT will scan them too and you may find a left over folder in that location. Most of the time after performing a scan and you click finish or cancel, the folder will automatically be removed right away or after the next restart of the computer. If not, the folder and its contents can be manually deleted without an adverse effect on the computer.Installation of security updates from Microsoft for MSMXL packages and hotfixes also create temporary randomly alpha/numeric named folders that contain sub-folders like amd64, i386. The creation date should match the installa... Read more

Hi, I?m a college student and found someone running something on my machine. I'm not sure exactly what it was, I deleted it right once I saw him running it but it did do some weird things. It tried running a lsass.exe from my temp folder, the user temp folder. I deleted it from my temp folder but also some randomly named exe files that were created right then as well as some .tmp files. They were not running at the time so I deleted them. There was an auto start entry for the bad lsass.exe in the registry so I quickly deleted that. I don't see any signs of stuff left but I'm worried there is possibly a rootkit or something left and I am not knowledgeable enough to determine if it?s clean. I'm trying to clean it instead of reformatting just because schools about to start again and I'm hoping that we can fix it. Thanks.

I'm running win 7 64 bit ultimate with mse and windows firewall. I also have windows 7 firewall control plus installed. Mse picked off two things, from the history they were Trojan:Win32/Nebuler.J and PWS:Win32/Tacsasi.A and both were in my user appdata local temp folder, the same folder that lsass.exe was in. One thing I noticed was that lsass.exe was a 32 bit exe from the task manager so maybe since I am 64 bit that?s why my system didn't seem to be too badly hit?

I can't run gmer for any worth, it throws an error and when I looked it up it seemed to be that the program is not fully compatible with 64 bit windows yet.

Not sure if you installed a program but her is directions on uninstalling a program manually.

Uninstall Programs Manually
Just because Windows XP has the Add/Remove Programs feature it doesn't mean your application will appear in the list. Furthermore, even if it does appear, it's no guarantee that the uninstall feature will work. When you run across one of these situations the items listed below will help in getting rid of the application. Be aware that these steps may not remove everything associated with the application and can impact other applications on the computer. Have a backup or restore point and use caution.

Find the directory for the application and delete all the files in the directory. Delete the directory.

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.

Recently re-installed WXP after Computer Crash.

Copied "My Documents" folder from thumb drive to the computer
.
Noticed several folders in "My Documents" were missing so thought I didn't back up to the thumb drive often enough so figured they were lost in the crash.

Wasl looking for a file and was unsure in which folder it might be located so did a "search" and found it in "My Documents". Went back to the "My Documents" folder and it wasn't there so did another search. This is what I discovered:

I went into Windows Explorer and found "My Documents"

I went into "My Computer" and then the "C" drive and found Documents and Settings, Gary, My Documents in the tree

Further down the tree I found the "C" Drive again and found Documents and Settings, Gary's, My Documents.

It appears there are 3 "My Documents" on my computer and of those down the tree had the missing folders I was looking for.

This is strange because after the computer crash I inserted the WXP Install disk and it wiped out all of my files and programs before installing. When the install was complete I had to install of my programs, printer, scanner etc. I then transfered the "My Documents" folder from the thumb drive to my computer. Since all of the programs were wiped clean, where did the 3 versions of "My Documents" come from.

I am not sure if I am in the correct forum but here is my problem. I am using Windows XP Professional and I am on a company network. My boss has been out on medical leave and took her computer home with her so she could do work while she recovers. I have access to some Excel files that are on her computer and I have been working offling in them while she has been out. This past Friday, I was sick and could not come into work but my boss was able to come in for a few hours to help out during the busy time and she worked on my computer. I came in on Monday and can no longer access the offline files I have been working in for the last three months. When I try to open a file it tells me that the file cannot be found and to check my spelling or try another path. My boss swears she changed nothing on my computer and was not able to even go into those files. Does anyone have a clue how I can access my offline files? Everything I have read states I will have to delete them but I would lose three months worth of work that I might never be able to recover. Is there any other way?

they were registering with the new DHCP servers.  As of Friday everything seemed to be successful.

Yesterday my manager came in to start work, having turned off and taken his Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 home with him on Friday, but not having powered it up over the weekend.  He had been working on a presentation on Friday that is due

We rebooted, ran a couple of GPUpdate /force commands, and my manager was able to see his documents.  The latest "date modified" looked to be 4-28-2016 around noon - which was Thursday.

I have an XP machine which has filled the C drive with Offline Files Synchronizing.
This is something that was setup years ago, and just kicked in again this week somehow.
It has synchronized 20GB of files to the C drive. C drive is only 37GB. Windows folder is 25 GB.
I started to delete the offline files, but the process failed (a device attached is not functioning - I think that was the message).
Now I have Offline Files not enabled.
There is obviously still about 20 GB of storage on this drive, which I want to clear off, but the Offline Files Folder shows empty.

Does anyone know a way to clear up this ?

A:XP Offline Files

Click Start > My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > Offline Files tab > uncheck "Enable Offline Files.

Note that if the function is set in group policy, it will reset to enabled again after you log back into the network. There may be additional settings you can choose that effectively allow you to keep it from working. You may be able to unselect the server(s) that you synchronize with, etc. You may have to do this each time you log into the network depending on policy settings on your network.

Offline files do support active database files.... found that out the hard way. (it assumes the file is still open and will not move into your machine)
