Preferred Solution: I have a 1TB storage device but the storage isnt in the pool

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I created a Storage pool with the following setup. Three 3TB drives with parity all in an external enclosure with eSata and USB 2/3 ports. It was connected via USB when created and had production data loaded and tested without any issues.
After a few days of use I decided to see what happened when I tried to access it via the eSata port. No luck, due to a driver on the eSata card issue with Win 8. So I powered all back down and plugged back in via USB. At this point the Storage pool went
into the state as per the screenshot below. Any suggestions to either fix the issue and/or retrieve the data that is in the volume?

Has anyone tried the new Storage Spaces feature in Windows 8? Your experience with it?

More specifically:

1. If this system is used on a shared network with other operating systems such as XP and Windows 7, can the storage pool drives be set up as shared, and become visible and usable from the XP and Win 7 machines?

2. If you have a Network Backup drive, like WD My Book Live, will it see and back up the Storage Spaces configured drive just like any other drive on the network?

A:Storage Spaces (Storage Pool) Experience?

I've only set this up on a Windows Server 2012 configuration therefore I cannot provide the exact steps on how to set one up in a client environment. That being said, a storage space/pool is essentially a virtual disk that resides on one or multiple physical disks allowing you to accumulate free space. For example if I have multiple servers with free space on their data drives I can then create a storage pool to accumulate this. To allocate this storage pool/space to a user or machine you will need to decide what you wish to do with it. Below are a couple of examples of how:

Share via Windows Folder Sharing (UNC Path)Use iSCSI to use the current ethernet infastructure allowing you to assign the storage pool/space a drive letter to the client machineIn a server environment you may wish to use it for DFS (Distributed File System) to maintain redundancy

Personally I use my storage pool as an iSCSI drive for which i have partitioned.

   Warning
You can only use the free space of a non Windows install drive. To my knowledge you cannot overcome this with partitioning.

In relation to your second question, you will only able to use the share as a safepoint backup if it is shared via Windows Folder Sharing. For example: \\computername\share

Also you will need to make sure that the NAS is on the same workgroup as the Windows 8 machine hosting the storage pool otherwise it will not be able to find the share. Hopefully this is what you asking however pleas... Read more

Hi All,
Good Morning!!
Could any suggest me to overcome the below scenario.
We are unable to add the new physical disk in storage pool without stopping the cluster service. I have noticed that StorageSubSystemFriendlyName has different naming standard initially and it got changed post the cluster service stop.

Below power-shell command works post the cluster service stopped.
New-StoragePool -StorageSubSystemFriendlyName "XXXXX" ?PhysicalDisk (Get-PhysicalDisk -CanPool $True) ?FriendlyName ?XXXX?

Operating system - Windows server 2012 R2 Standard / Datacenter.
Please let me know if you required more information to provide the workaround / solution.

Windows is really making me upset lately, with the forced windows 10 upgrade dialogues  and all. Today I got some hard drives in the mail along with a usb enclosure all together 5 drives 4TB each. From what I understood windows storage spaces was
supposed to be similar to raid. I heard there was something like raid 0, 1, and 5 so I thought this would be great I could have 1 big 20TB drive. So I went to set this up and the first thing I noticed was the raid 0 was nothing like normal raid 0. There is
no speed increase it just morphs all the drives into one drive with no performance increase and all the chance of data loss without parity. So I decided to do 1 disk parity, oh boy doing that let me have only 12TB of usable space as 6.1TB went to redundancy
for 1 disk. I really don't understand that as in normal raid 5 only 1 disk would be used for redundancy but in this case almost 2 full disks out of 5 are being used for redundancy. Anyways the major issue I have is the whole thing is being spun down and put
into some power saver mode every 2 minutes regardless of what I have things set to. I turned of hard disk spin down in power options, turned of usb power saving in power options, and a tried to use a tool that claims to keep disks awake in windows. This is
really getting me upset as every few minutes when I go to use my external hard drive I have to wait 30 seconds for all the disks to spin up in the storage pool and for windows to recognize it. This is not mak... Read more

When adding an initial drive to a storage pool I get the error "incorrect function"
System: Proliant ML110 G4, Windows 8 64-Bit, 4GB Ram
I have a 160GB drive installed on the motherboard's controller which hosts the OS
I've installed a single 2TB drive on a 2 Port PCI Express Internal SATA II Controller Card (JMB36x).
As soon as I create a pool using the 2TB drive I get the error "Incorrect Function" and the drive becomes RAW.
The drive id's are unique.
It's worth pointing out that the system without the new controller can only support 2TB max of SATA drives, but this is bypassed by the controller card I added?
Help is appreciated.

My original goal for my Server was to have one giant Storage Pool with separate folders for Videos/Pictures/Documents/VM img/etc... After using this model for the past year, I have found some operational deficiencies with this methodology. For starters with one Storage Pool that meant I would have 16HDD's spinning 24/7 which is an excessive waste of energy and component lifecycle. Another issue was heat, when these HDD's were all in my desktop case I actually had to remove the side cover and cool them with a 12" desk fan (Ive since moved to a Norco 4224).
My new goal is to break up the server into 4 separate Pools. The problem comes in when I'm trying to dismantle my huge Storage Space and reallocate the HDD's to a completely separate Storage Pool. FYI Storage Spaces is not designed to reduce drives/capacity, it only works great when adding drives/capacity. Currently I have shuffled some drives around and managed to separate the main folders into their own Storage Pools. After I copied all the data from my original Storage Pool to the new, I would then delete the original files (10+TB) on the original Pool. Here's the bug; The files would be deleted from the Storage Space (the virtual disk), but the space would NOT be released from the Storage Pool.
What I mean by that is, my Storage Space (E:\ drive) shows that it only has 8TB of files (since the Pool is in parity that would take up 12TB in the storage pool) However, my Storage Pool (made up of 12HDDs) is sh... Read more

Hi
The idea of creating a large redundant storage pool seems like a good idea (I can finally get rid of FreeNAS box), but before I do that I have couple of simple question

1) Can I move a pool created on one windows 8 machine to another windows 8 machine?

2) what happens if disk where my OS resides crashes or I feel like re-installing windows 8 on a different set of hardware, will I be risking losing all my data if OS or hardware changes force me to re-install windows 8?

If the storage pool is independent of the OS disk it shouldn't matter if you need to reinstall. Storage pools themselves offer resiliency through striping and mirroring, if enabled.

You might want to take a read through this for more information.

My organization is currently using Netware 6.5. We need to expand our Groupwise storage pool (currently 200 GB) by 200 GB. Unfortunately, we're not well-versed in Novell and we don't know for certain what the maximum pool size is for Netware 6.5. The system is left over from a previous net admin and I've been combing through the Netware Administrator's Handbook, but I'm not finding it. Yeah so umm . . . my OS HDD died yesterday, and my other two drives are in a storage pool together (thus not bootable) after two days of trying to set up a dynamic partition in the pool using diskpart (which I'm now fairly confident can't be done XD) was wondering if there is a way to simply delete the storage pool with the tools you have available on the usb boot installer from the iso.

Otherwise I'm going to have to wait until i can buy a new HDD, which in my position could be a very long time, well, unless there is a way to make the thing bootable as is that I failed to think of. There isn't exactly any help on this topic available yet (I may be the first to hit this for all I know, heh heh)

I was setting up a test storage pool consisting of five 2TB drives. I set it to parity and was surprised to see how small my storage pool was. I'm not sure how the inner working go but I thought I would suffer one drive worth of space to parity but it

Hi all,

I have been looking at building a NAS for my home and I have noticed that Windows 8 now contains a pretty decent system for protecting my drives (I'm talking about the Storage Spaces feature).

I know we have had Raid 5 support in the past but I very much like the idea of being able to grow the "Storage Pool" by replacing the drives with larger ones when they die and eventually being able to make use of the extra space.

Once of the most important things to me is HOW the user get notified when there is an error on the array (Storage Pool). I have been playing with yanking out drives while writing data and the scary thing is that the system doesn't actually alert you anything is wrong except for the tiny 'action center' flag appearing in the lower right hand corner of the screen. The other kinda annoying thing is that this flag doesn't show anywhere on the Start Screen, only on desktop mode.

LASTLY, another scary thing is that even if you do notice that a message has appeared in the action center, you are told that the drive missing or failing ISN'T a high importance issue!!! Its a general maintenance message ??

So my question is, does anybody know a better way to get these action center messages? I googled for email notifications from the action center but found nothing. I suspect this is because the action center has been a fairly useless feature of Windows until now.

Or alternatively, can anybody recommend a better Storag... Read more

Hi All,

When creating a Storage Spaces Pool, the member drives are no longer listed in Disk Management.

My system has been hanging every so often and when I checked the Windows logs, I see a lot of critical error messages about Harddisk/DR10 having a bad block. Since Disk Management no longer lists the individual pool drives, how do I find out which DR10 is one of the pool member drives?

I've tried mini partition tool to see if it can see the drives, it doesn't. It can only see what Disk Management sees and that's only non-storage spaces pooled drives.

Many thanks!

I added 2 new exact same 4 TB drives that I want to set up as a software raid 1 to prevent loss of data if a single drive fails. It should write the data to both drives at the same time. This should be straightforward to set up - under control panel - storage spaces - create a new pool - select the drives then add them to a "storage pool" and select what type of raid.

These are blank drives - after I select them and try to add them to a pool I get the error "Can't prepare drives" - "Close all applications that are accessing the drive, and then try again." "Access is denied. (0x0000005)"

Nothing is accessing the drives...........

I went into control panel - administrative tools - computer management - storage - disk management - and deleted the volumes from both drives, so they are no longer formatted - now I get a different error message "Can't create pool" - "Check the drive connections, and then try again." - "The request is not supported. (0x00000032)"

I use this computer personally at my house - I just have important data that I don't want to lose and this is a great feature built into Windows 10 - but I cannot get past this point of adding the drives to the pool.

These were initialized as GPT disks because of the capacity. Bitlocker is off, and no other encryption.

I had 3x 3TB drives in a parity pool. It started to fill up so i added a fourth 3TB drive and months later one of the original 3 began to fail on me. Performance was slow, then slower, then it showed disconnected.

I retired the drive and added a replacement, literally the same model 3TB drive. I cannot however, get it to remove the failed physical disk and repair the pool. I even tried adding another 2TB drive i had available in case it needed the extra space (didn't make sense but i was reaching).

I get the "drive could not be removed because not all data could be reallocated. add an additional drive to this pool and reattempt this operation."

Any ideas on what i need to do? I have searched a lot and don't really seem to be getting anywhere. The only way i was able to retire the drive was through powershell. I'm assuming it's a GUI issue and perhaps i'm not approaching it correctly via powershell. Attempting to repair virtual disk didn't work.

Hi mate!

Of course it is possible, you have to plug your old drive to your machine and make sure that Master/Slave jumpers are set correctly to avoid conflicts. Your OS will identify the drive and then you will be able to access files stored in it. If you want to reformat it you can easily do that from inside the OS with no problems. There is no need to have an OS installed on that drive.

i am also wanting this to be linked upto my home network.

hope some one can help.

Thanks
Mick

Ok I bought a HDD for a computer im currently building but as a bonus it came with an USB External Case... so I decided to start to save all my files on to the new hdd meanwhile im getting the other parts for my pc... well i installed the drivers on the cd that came with it then i plugged it in and it xp installed the device and everything but then i get a msg saying that the device is a high speed usb device plugged into a non high speed usb device and then it tells me that it will be able to run but at reduced speeds... i dont mind the reduced speeds right now but the problem is that when i go to My Computer to open the hdd it is not listed at all... i went to My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager and checked under Disk drives and it shows USB 2.0 Storage Device USB Device and my original hdd... so im not sure how to get into the hdd... do i have to edit some settings or some other things?

ohh almost forgot i am running Windows XP Pro SP1

thx for any help in advanced...

See recent post "problems after using SanDisk flash drive" by me.
I have had a host of problems after using a flash drive on my brand new computer.
I'm no expert, but it's looking like it corrupted my sound card somehow. I am inprocess of trying to get it fixed, and have narrowed it down to my sound card and have it disabled so that my computer behaves.
When I have it enabled, none of my system games (like Spider Solitare) respond. They open and then freeze. Windows Media Player does the same thing. And, no sound.
Anyway, see my thread and see if any of the things I've gotten help with help you.

I have an extra hard drive from another laptop and I am trying to use as a usb storage disk. I've tried going through the command prompt, but I can not clean it,format it or create volume or anything. It says it needs to be initialized. When I go through the computer management to disk management to initialize it, it says disk not ready. What do I do to ready this disk? Can anyone help?

I have a USB storage device that you place a hard drive in it then the usb plugs into the computer. The Hard drive & USB storage device is for desktop computer hard drives. I want to put the USB device in a laptop. Will a desktop computer size hard drive work in the laptop if I put it in the usb device?

btw: This laptop has no internal hard drive. The laptop is a Gateway Solo 9100. 150Mhz processor. 64MB of RAM.

Can I boot the computer from the USB hard drive if I put an OS on it?

A computer that old is not going to support booting from an external hard drive.

In Device Manager, there is a USB Mass Storage Device or an Unknown Device, even when there isn't anything plugged in. This is occurring on a Dell Dimension 5100. This is not the pc in my system specs. How do I fix this?
Here are some Device Manager screenshots:

The PC is unplugged from power (with all USB devices unplugged, as well as the DVI and ethernet cables) and the CMOS battery is removed.

Hi, I'm having a slight problem with my computer.

It originated when I was using an image mounting tool, after removing one of the simulated drives while my usb thumb drive was connected. A new drive called removable disk appeared with the same drive letter as the simulated drive I removed. If I go into the device manager I see it as "Generic Storage Device USB Device". Removing it also removes the new drive from my computer, however each time I reconnect my usb thumb drive I get that one popping up. I also get my thumb drive, but besides that I get a "ghost" image of one that I can't open, and it remains even after safely removing my usbstick, and remains until I remove it in the device manager. I'm guessing this is related to windows 'remembering' the ids of the devices you connect, however I can't remember where that is stored in the windows registry. Any ideas about what I can do?

Thankful for any answers

Regards
Jack

When I insert the Micro Sd card into the USB adapter and insert the adapter, the Explorer sees it as a Removable Disc (F)
then asks me to insert a disc, or format a disk.  The device driver through control panel shows USB Mass Storage Device, and the driver is working properly.

It worked properly earlier in the day, but now it doesn't.

Does anyone know of a good program that will allow me to clone my system which is a PCI-E storage device (OCZ Revodrive 350) to a hard drive for backup purposes and of course boot from that hard drive if required to reverse the process?

Ak

A:Cloning To or From a PCI-e Storage Device

Try Macrium Reflect Free edition is good for just Images and Restoring or cloning you only need to pay if you want to back up files.
