Computer is built....next step !?!

Q: Computer is built....next step !?!

Happy New Year Everyone ! I have just finished building my first computer, I'm ready to plug it in...I have windows xp pro and various other loading discs from my abit mobo, radeon 9600 pro and sound blaster platinum. What are the steps I need to do now? Do I set BIOS up first, load video drivers first or xp first or what...lol !!!I'm not looking to overclock but I am unclear on things like partitioning and formating.....Do I need to set up Fat32, if so to what benefit? And with windows...do I want to leave the owner account alone and set myself up a different account or do I want to rename the owner account to my name and go with that...I will be the only user on the computer. I heard somewhere before to leave the owner account untouched for some reason and start a new account. I've always had OEM computers before, this is my first hot rod and I want to configure it sweet !

Thanks, merlin324

Preferred Solution: Computer is built....next step !?!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Computer is built....next step !?!

Here is a good site for installing XP;

If are going to run dos based games then I believe you should stick with FAT 32, if not then NTFS is the way to go.

XP will be the start point, possibly a couple of drivers from the abit cd, then windows updates, then update drivers as needed.

If your the only user then leave accounts alone.

I have a Dell Dimension 5100, since about a day ago my computer won't turn on and the power button light blinks amber. After looking at my computer a little bit I noticed my front USB port all jumbled up and broken. Looking around some forums I noticed that, the USB being jumbled was the problem with the computer not turning on, so I was wondering how to remove my Front USB port. A step by step guide would be nice. I just don't want to pay for geek squad or something to come over and fix it.

A:Need Step by Step Help removing my front usb port from my computer

I wish there was a step by step guide but sometimes just opening the case and looking at what you have and what it's connected to and how it's attached to the casing is all you need to do. Jazz

How do i set up the dns right? What other requirements do I need to meet before I can successfully add a computer to a domain? I am interning at a computer company and need to figure this out..... I don't speak much technology language yet so the more simple instructions the better!!!! THANKS!!!!

A:step by step for adding a computer to a domain

Make sure you are connected to the network before attempting these instructions.

To add a computer to a domain you need to have that domain's admin username and password or your username should be a member of the domain admin group. (local admin will not work).

Your domain should be setup for DNS server and DHCP server to issue these values when a client computer attempts to connect it.

Before you attempt to connect to the Domain Server's Active Directory, go to the connected network adapter's IP settings and set "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

Right click on Computer icon either on desktop or inside start menu, and in the system properties, click on Advanced System Settings.

Go to the first tab (Computer name) and click on Network ID button. This will start a wizard, which will guide you through various steps involved in joining to an existing domain.

You can also use the Change button and enter the Domain name in the member of Domain field and click enter. This will ask you for the domain admin's username and password. Enter them and after authentication the computer will join the Domain and you will get a dialog box saying "Welcome to Domain (Domain name)". If the system could not find the domain's active directory then an error message will pops up. You need to fix the error and try again.

I have created and stored images of my C and D (restore partition on C: drive) drives (using Macrium Reflect) on an external drive in case of an emergency.

I thought, it will be better to have a step-by-step guide in case my hard drive fails. My experience tells me that though these things sound simple, in reality they are NOT that simple when done hands on.

Is there such a guide or a link to such a guide ?

Putting this in here, in case other miss it, as its also in Security. Sticking for a week

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Step-by-Step Interactive Training because of the way that Step-by-Step Interactive Training handles bookmark link files. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a malicious bookmark link file that could potentially allow remote code execution if a user visited a malicious Web site or opened a malicious attachment that was provided in an e-mail message. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. However, user interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability.
Affected Software:

• Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
• Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

I have a new-to-me T530, no files saved, only apps are CPU ID (which I can de-install). I do not have the Windows 10 install discs (it's one of those NewEgg refurbished laptops)....but the ID is registered and the BIOS drivers are all up to date. I have a Samsung V-NAND SSD 860 EVO ready to be installed...but I'm confused. I thought Samsung had a good software to clone the HD, but if I download it onto the old drive, how does the information get from the old drive to the new one? Maybe I'm a freakin' idiot, but the Samsung instructions are as clear as mud. I do NOT have an extra external bay for the HD, but I have plenty of flash drives I can use to clone the OS. Once I have the new SSD installed, I can use my other external HDs to transfer my files from one computer to another   TIA

First let me say that I am not a computer expert, so I am not especially well-versed in all of the computer jargon. I apologize in advance for that. I have an Inspiron All-in-One 2330 that is about 2.5 years old.  I recently noticed that the left side of the screen was looking blurry, so I ran a diagnostic test. Apparently the hard drive is operating outside of the parameters or words to that effect. It is recommended that I replace my hard drive.
I am not inside the warranty, so I have to do it myself. This scares me. Can someone point me in the direction of explicit instructions of (1) how to actually replace the hard drive, and (2) how to put the operating system (Windows 10) back on my computer.  I am currently backing up my files, so that is one thing I know how to do!
Thanks in advance.

Was soooo much easier with Win 98. The only one I can get to install successfully is the 52.16 (nvidia) from the Win update site.
The others I have downloaded(from nvidia) will not install, no matter what hoops I jump through.

Here is the way I am trying it...what am I doing wrong?

First I uninstall the nvidia drivers in "add, remove...etc.

Reboot to safe mode and use a driver remover program.

Reboot and try to cancel the "new hardware found" message, and run the "exe" file for the XP certified drivers I have downloaded...reboot...No drivers installed

Then, I reboot and let Windows try to use the "new hardware found" program...and point it to the driver files I have downloaded...and it says they are not compatible(nvidia says they are "certified for XP" so why do I get this message?

I've always wanted to know how to do this on my own. Could someone give me step by step instructions on how to completely erase all information from one of my hard disks (I have two) and leave all the information on the other disk. Then how to re-install windows XP and all the necessary drivers etc. Then (I know this is really getting complex) could someone tell me the best possible anti-virus software and anti-spyware software available (preferably free). And I don't think I need a firewall because I have a router, am I correct? Finally I would like to know how to create and employ a rescue-disk. Thank-you so much for the help, I will probably use this info for years to come.

I followed the 5 Steps properly until Step 5 whereupon I downloaded Service Pack 2. Oops. I tried to remove Service Pack 2, but am not sure I was successful.

This step is only for users with no service packs installed at all, not those at SP1, and certainly not if you're already at SP2. The Step 4 is for updating to SP1. There's a note on that page which says this:

Note: This step is intended for those who have no Service Packs installed. If you're not sure, you can find out by right-clicking My Computer>select Properties and look on the General Tab under "System:". If you already have Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2, please skip this step.

So, I'm not sure what your status is right now, other than Panda is showing us only cookies, so that's a good sign.

Do this now:

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized

I will try to be to the point here. A while back I had a problem with my computer and slicked the hard drive, and when I went to reload, I realized I did not have some of the drivers for the system. And then the computer will not continue to load windows. I can start it by doing the step by step option and answering no to any question regarding my CD drives. I also can not find my sound card. Objective: Upgrade an 18 month old HP Pavillion/Vista machine (which may have a trojan as I'm constantly getting bounced mail error messages to addresses I don't send to) with external Seagate 1.5TB Free Agent drive none of which has been maintained or backed-up recently; to System 7 with online automatic back-up. I also want to upgrade my Office 2003 to Office 2010 at the same time. I've already purchased Windows 7 Home Premium (upgrade) and Office 2010 Home and Business. Since little maintenance has been done, I'd like to fully format both the internal and external hard drives before reinstalling the new op system, office SW and restoring the back-up data. Can anyone direct me, step-by-step, through this process? Please? Thank you! Bill

Dear members,
My system specifications are given below. I want to install windows 7 Service pack 1 as the latest version of the Itunes require that. Now, I am a beginner when it comes to technology. therefore, I require step by step guide to completely make my system running perfectly.

1) the first thing that I require is windows 7 sp1 cd . I have that.
2) after windows installation, it is the list of drivers and their availability that drive me crazy. I will be needing
a) sound driver.
b) wifi driver.
c) mouse touch pad driver.
d) bluetooth driver.
e) and an anti-virus too.
Please let me know any other drivers I will need and from where to download them. I currently have all the drivers in my PC , so it is even possible that I may transfer them to USB and then again re-install them.

I just received in the mail 1 new 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD, 1 WD Black Caviar Drive (to match the existing 1TB WD Black Caviar drive I currently use), I also have a clean 1TB WD Caviar Blue drive I can use for what ever and an external 1TB USB 3.0 Passport for any drive imaging of file back ups etc. My rig specs are attached below. I currently have all my information on the one WD Black drive including the OS. I got these two new drives to enable a seperate SSD Boot/OS drive and to reconfigure my existing WD drive into a RAID 0 with the new drive while maintaining existing information (programs and documents) if possible. I am not anywhere near an expert, but do have some experience with hardware and configuration (I built my current rig) so a good set of instructions from an expert would be all I need. I see all the high scores for WEI and when benchmarking seperate SSD drives for OS and RAID 0 configurations that I am excited to give the new drives a try. I am sorry if this is a redundant thread, but I did look for and search for some time to find a thread I could use. I will check back often to answer any questions. Thanks!

A:I need step-by-step instructions for new Boot/OS SSD & RAID 0 Platters

Hi Chris,

Nice new gear. Lets see if we can get your system setup and running nicely.

Firstly, a quick question: I assume you want to do a fresh, clean install of Windows 7 to your SSD? In that case, my recommendation is to:

1. Unplug any existing HDD's.
2. Install the SSD drive, and then follow this tutorial to install Windows 7 to it:

Clean Install Windows 7

3. Allow Windows to complete all the updates it wants.
4. Install any applications - your drive is quite large, so there is plenty of room for Office etc. and don't forget the anti-virus software of your choice.

If I understand you correctly, you want to add an additional drive to your exitsing drive to create a RAID0 array and still preserve whats on it at the moment. Unfortunately, and I am happy to stand corrected, I do not think that is possible - in a RAID0 the data etc. is spanned across both disks, but at the moment it is written to a single platter.

My approach to this would be:

1. Copy all your data from the existing platter to the USB external drive BEFORE you install the SSD.
2. Reconnect your original HDD and install the new HDD. Boot the PC, and in the BIOS configure the RAID controller and add these two disks to the RAID.
3. Boot the computer. Once in Windows, in Disk Management, configure a simple drive, and partition as appropriate.
4. Now copy all your data back from the USB to the new RAID0.
5. If you like, you can also install applications to this RAID0 array.

I have a dead computer. I bought a new one. I need the files from the dead one. The power supply does not work on the old one. The old one is an emachine T2482. The new one is Dell Inspiron 518. The old one had XP the new one is Vista. I am very hopeful that someone will be able to direct me to a video or step by step instructions. I follow instructions fairly well.
