Google Redirect (Hijack) Links and slow computer [Moved]

Q: Google Redirect (Hijack) Links and slow computer [Moved]

Hi, I've been having problems for the past week when using Google to redirect me to the desired website. I've been sent to many random websites as opposed to the one I want. This is happening on both IE and Firefox. Yahoo search engine works fine so I've been using it lately. Also, many times my computer will momentarily freeze when trying to close pop up screens. Only way I can close them is by "end task" in the task manager screen.
I've have downloaded Malwarebytes but it will not open for me. I've also used Ad-Aware/Windows Defender/AVG but nothing has fixed the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

Last week I was infected with the KoobFace Virus after clicking a malicious link in Facebook. My Avast virus security program picked it up and removed a portion of it. I believe another portion of the virus was removed by Malwarebytes. A Malwarebytes scan now shows a clean machine. However, I am still being redirected to random sites when clicking on a link in a google search result. Also, google maps is not working properly.

My Avast program is up for renewal, but when I try to go to their website IE times-out. I am also unable to go to other virus security websites. Maybe due to the virus?

You guys were a tremendous help to me earlier in the year when I had a problem with another machine. I hope you can help me out with the problem as well. Thanks in advance!

Whenever I do a search in Google in Firefox and click on one of the links in the search results it redirects me to some 3rd party sites instead of the actual url of the site that shows up in the search engine results. I ran several malware programs to get rid of it, but it did not fix the problem. Thanks.

Hello -

Do you still need help with this issue?

It appears as though you've run ComboFix on this machine.

A Reminder....

As seen in Post #2 of our sticky topic 'NEW INSTRUCTIONS Read this Before Posting For Malware Removal Help'

Quote:

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix

Post the log located at C:\ComboFix.txt since you already have.

So my Internet is fine, my computer is what is the problem (I tested my Wi-Fi and connectin on several other computers and they worked just fine). Sometimes it's just incredibly slow and sometimes it just won't load any page, even if the bar connection on the bottom right of my screen is fine. Also, when I click on Google/Bing searches, I end up getting ads pages 99% of the time. Sometimes it will redirect to the right site but very rarely.

I'm posting this on my boyfriend's behalf. He recently started having problems with his internet redirecting him to other sites when he'd click on google links (this only happened some of the time). He would run virus scans (superantispyware and avast, at separate times) and both had found trojans and removed them but it would keep coming back. Now they're finding a few different ones, and one that seems to be a trojan generator. Now he's unable to open any links I give him on any of his 3 web browsers (chrome, ie, and firefox). Malwarebytes won't install on his computer (it says it's already installed, but he's sure he uninstalled everything from the last time he had it and it didn't work). So far, these aren't affecting his computer as a whole, just his internet, but we're worried it's going to start soon. I can't give any logs, because I don't have physical access to his computer right now. I'm just hoping someone can aid me with advice on what he can do to remove this. I've seen a lot of threads on here about google redirects, but there don't seem to be many answers. I thought maybe he could search through his computer for any suspicious files, because obviously whatever is continuing or redirecting these trojans isn't being caught.

If anyone can be of any assistance with the information I've given please do so. We've been sitting here for hours trying to get rid of this a... Read more

Hi, I'm having a problem wherein my browser either fails to link to sites (mostly) or my search results will send me to pages of sponsored links. I'm running XP and this first started happening with Internet Explorer.

I got some message (sorry I can't quote it verbatim) telling me I could be infected with something. I immediately started running my Ad-Aware, SpyBot, CCleaner. They all said they found potentially dangerous things and took care of them, or so I thought.

Pressed for time, I just started using Firefox, which worked for a while, but it would eventally do the same thing. So, I'd run the programs again, and start all over again.

Today, I have time to finally try to post a Hijack This log. I started following the directions and, using Internet Explorer, cannot get to the site to download DDS. It says "cannot display the page". Running a connection check turns up no problems. I tried Firefox, and it's giving me a message that Firefox is already running--which it isn't.

I've now re-started my computer for about the 10th time today and need some advice. Please, oh generous and knowledgable people, help me... Thanks.

P.S. I also find that Internet Explorer can't get to my email (Comcast) or some other sites I frequent, unless I go into the history and find the page. When I click that, it works.

Hello,Here are my problems, and they just started two nights ago -- before this, my pc was totally fine: 1) frequently, if I click a link in google, I get redirected to some random ad site instead of the intended site 2) sometimes while I'm browsing the web with Firefox, a random tab will open without me doing anything with some advertisements or a random site 3) A "Vista Security Tool" program keeps popping up, telling me I have all sorts of infections, and I know it's some kind of scam or virus itself, so I found that it's linked to a process called "ave.exe", so I use task manager to end the process but it sometimes comes back4) my computer takes a LONG time to start up now. The startup is pretty fast up to the point where I input my password and login to windows. Then it says "loading" for a while, and then there's a black screen for a long while, and then my desktop appears.I had Symantec Endpoint (received through my university) as my only antivirus before, and I thought it would be enough to stop infections like this. I first used system restore and restored to a point 3-4 days before I noticed an infection, but the problems persisted even after the restore. Then I ran updated versions of Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot, and Microsoft Security Essentials, and while they did detect some things and the problems don't appear as frequently now, they're still frequent enough to be very bothersome. A:Google links redirect me and computer freezes when scanning.

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and... Read more

Recently, every time I click on a result when searching on google, I'm redirected to a completely different site. My computer has also been having problems running much worse than it should be. Around perhaps 6 to 9 months ago, it could handle playing quite a few games effortlessly. Now, it has a small bit of trouble playing videos on youtube. Most games run too bad to possibly play. Also, I've been using a program called Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to scan, but it isn't finding anything. I hadn't gotten this problem fixed because I simply couldn't find any way to fix it, but I happened across these forums while searching for a solution to this google redirecting business.

Anyways, my operating system is Windows XP. That's about all I know about my computer.

Hi
In response to Dan's (dtae) posting entitled "sponsored links" on left in Firefox" I too have just got this infuriating problem.
The sponsored links on the left are not solely Google related nor it would seem solely Firefox related!!!
In Firefox the left links are present in a Google or Yahoo search.
They are not present when using IE or Safari.
However, they are also NOT present in Firefox when using the Google related search 'Locate Me'.
I have also run 'CustomizeGoogle' in Firefox and this does not touch these particular links.
I have run various malware scans and nothing has been thrown up. Nor has my constantly running PCGuard found anything!
I will keep an eye on Dan's posting and hope the above info will help.

Hello. So my problem started about 2 weeks ago. I posted a message at that time but haven't had time to act upon it.

So I have some type of virus or malware that is constantly redirecting google and making a lot of anti-malware programs nonfunctional or uninstallable. I finally managed to run a new version of adaware and removed 4 hits, but I've had no change in function. Computer is also super slow. I'm currently in safe mode. I'm also getting a weird system error popup message stating something about having "the maximum number of secrets set by the United States Department of blah blah has been exceeded."

Here is my DDS log:

Hello and welcome. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I?ve given you the ?All clear.? Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean! Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed. P2P - I see you have P2P software (uTorrent) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to malware infections. Please see this post for more information. I recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs. If you choose to keep these applications, please do not use them until our fixes at BC are complete. I'm suffering from an extremely slow computer running XP. McAfee says there are no viruses, but after realizing all my Google searches were going to a redirect and using another computer to search for that problem, I was led to you with hope that you can help cleanse my computer of the redirect virus.

I've followed the "First Steps" page, and have attached two files (zipped) and copy/pasted the DDS file below, in hopes that it will yield a clean computer. (Actually, I don't know if they have been attached, as it says they have, but don't show up. Oh well, I'll try anyway. The browser has closed on me twice already, so I'm going to post this quickly, if possible. )

Thanks,
Peter

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

Combofix
We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Chrome started redirecting to searchresults.com over a month ago, and it kept coming back no matter how many times I deleted it from options: manage search engines. I ran AVG, Superantispyware, Spybot and Malabytes antimalware, and assumed if it was a bad virus these would have removed it. Stupid (
My computer has started behaving strangely in the last week. The internet has got very slow. I had a failed Windows login attempt that threw up the error message 'insufficient system resources'. However it logged in ok when I rebooted. I was unable to download the dds file from your site - my computer just doesnt do anything when i click on that download link. I managed to download combofix, the defogger and GMER fine. I ended up getting the dds off another computer and USB sticking it onto this one.
We also have this problem on another computer in the house, but I will add that as a separate post to save confusion as it is a very different system.
Please can you help? I really appreciate the service you all provide, thanks heaps.

First of all, hello all and thank you to whoever decided to start this forum. I've always been able to fix any malware problems until now, and am relieved that there is a site that can help me.

Okay, so about a week ago, I downloaded an "extended evaluation" copy of Audio Record Wizard v3.99. Not being very wise, I ran the program without running it through a scanner, and got a message about a specific DLL being broken. I ran to Google to see what the problem was, and surprise, I had a Google redirect virus.

I tried running Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, but was denied by it not opening at all, not even an error message. So I jumped to Spybot S&D and ran a scan. A couple things showed up, but my problem persisted. When the two programs who never let me down failed, I turned back to Google and painfully copy and pasted links that turned up as I searched for help. Eventually I found a program called ComboFix that I installed and ran.

After that, I tried Google to see if it worked again. It didn't on first inspection, it re-directed me, but if I clicked back and then clicked on the same link, it would send me to the right page.
I then tried Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware again. It worked, and removed some files ( I'm going to start saving all my logs from now on), and the problem seemed fixed. After a couple of days, my computer started to slow down, and Google is redirecting me again. I've just run ComboFix, allowing Google to semi-work, and have found this website... Read more

Hello! This is my first post here and I am very frustrated with my computer. I use Firefox as my browser and have had a couple of problems with it recently. First, 75% of the time, when I click on the link to a webpage of Google search results, I get redirected. Second, I don't really know how to describe it sometimes, when I load a webpage, I will get this weird version of the page. It wont have any of the normal graphics or the normal wallpaper. It will just be a white screen with bullet points of each link that the page and I would have to refresh to get the page back to normal. Third, this is a resolved problem but I figured I should mention it anyways. When I was using Firefox, when I when to a different page, like from a book mark, or even just typing the web address in, I would get a "Firefox cannot connect to server" problem. But, when I refreshed the page around three times, it would go back to the page.My computer is also VERY VERY slow! It is a VERY old computer, though. I believe the computer is anywhere from 7-10 years old. I have given it a face lift to make it look like vista but other than that, it operates on Windows XP. I have just recently cleaned all the dust from it, and I have seen a little boost in speed, but not by much. Also, I do multitask on it a lot and I play a lot of online games like MMORPGs on it. I also use a lot of tabs on Firefox, the normal amount of tabs on one window at a given time is around 5-7 tabs. Also, I cannot... Read more

Hi there,
The other day I discovered that links in google (and any other search engine I tried) were pointing me to unusual sites. I managed to find information and think I have the google redirect virus. In addition the computer has been running particularly slowly for the past couple months, and exceptinally and painfully slowly since this redirect problem crept in. I am running Windows XP and have run malware bytes anti-malware, mcafee virus alert and ad-aware. Each one found different viruses but none of them have fixed the problem, and the computer is now so slow to use that it takes minutes to load anything or for a screen to appear when you click on a window or file or anything.

I don't know if anyone will be able to help, and I don't even know what sort of logs or anything to send through. I have noticed that in the processes there are at least 10 or so svchost.exe instances running that take up a lot of memory, and explorer.exe seems to have jumped up to a very high number as well.

Any help you can provide will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Cheers,
Lara

My computer, running Windows XP is infected with the Redirect Virus. Primarily, links in Google and other search tools are redirecting to unrelated sites. This is manifest in Firefox and Internet Explorer. I have also noticed an increase in popup ads, but that may be unrelated.

My Norton Anti-Virus does not detect anything wrong. I have attempted to remove virus with TDSS Killer, but that does not find anything on my system. Also, both Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal tool have failed as well.

I have also reset my router to factory settings, but that did not solve the problem either.

Thanks for taking the time to look into this.

My poor PC is on the brink, whenever I select a link in google it redirects me to another website called 'bit-find' and sometimes ebay, I have seen other people with similar problems to this on this forum so I'm pretty certain that it is malware. I had a crude attempt at trying to fix this using instructions in someone elses thread but didn't have much luck so I have created a new topic. Hopefully I have created this topic in the correct place this time, here are my logs, if some friendly person could help me i would be much obliged.

I have attached my 'DDS' and 'attach' file

Cheers chaps/chapets

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. While we are working on your HijackThis log, please: Reply to this thread; do not start another! Thanks to all that take a look and try to help.
Computer has been progessivly running extremely slow, starting up, loading programs and just doing anything on the internet.

If I am in google things will be redirected. Any other website I get alot of pop ups every now and again.
Ive seen alot of "my.freeze.com" , "net assistant" "w3i" or "credit companion" all things I know I didnt install and know its malware.
I've tried to out smart it by running lots of spyware scans, and delete any and all registry lines that have any of those names. Also by manually deleting any file I thought was malware related.
All of which has had little to no effect, infact when I think i may be getting closer by the time i restart the malware just reinstalls it self and embedds it self even better, lol.
I did read the "read this before posting" I think i added and attached the files that was requested.

Let me know if I didnt post correctly. Thanks alot everyone, i really really appreciate any help.

The following are my symptoms: Google Redirect, Audio add popup, slow computer, security center will not update.
I am on XP professional, and I use firefox.

I have tried fixing with avast, malwarebytes, and ad-aware.
Someone on the following thread recommended comboFix

I ran comboFix, browsing was fast, and without symptoms for about 5 minutes. But all problems returned except the last one i mentioned (security center will not update).

Thanks for you help

Is it possible to get rid of this google redirect virus? I've tried working with a Trend Micro agent and they were unable to solve the issue even though they had me delete some of my hijack log items. They offered to help me if I purchased an $80 upgrade. Should I do it? Would someone be willing to look at my current log file?

I know that there are already a bunch of threads regarding this virus but I couldn't make any sense of any of them so I'm posting a new one.
I have MalwareBytes and it does not detect any problems. I also have HijackThis but I don't know how to comprehend the log file.
Doing a google search on IE is totally useless. Firefox is also affected but not as bad.
Someone please instruct me how to get rid of this problem or at least direct me to a thread that can explain the solution in a language I understand.

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.

Hello

Like many other users I've seen across this forum and others, I believe I've fallen victim to the Google redirect malware.
When searching for a particular topic on Google, the search results will come up as normal, but clicking on one of these links will send me off to an unwanted site, typically other search engines who's names I'm unfamiliar with.

In addition to this, it seems to not be detected by or even stops anti-spyware software from operating... I have tried a renaming trick mentioned in various places and did get Kaspersky to run. It found some stuff but as it was the free internet scan, it couldn't remove anything itself.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
