Restart loop: Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute

Q: Restart loop: Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute

I've got a problem. This laptop starts over after reboot, within 2 minutes. Gets the error: Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute.

MS Security Essentials thinks it has SIREFIR. But wont clean. I cant get MALWAREBYTES to run.

Would hate to reinstall... Attached is FRST log.

What's my next step?

Preferred Solution: Restart loop: Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Shortly after starting up Windows7 I get the message "Windows Encountered a Crirical Problem and Will Restart in 1 Minute..." and then the PC restarts in 1 minute. It does the same thing in safe mode. It happens every time I start it up and leaves no time to run anything to stop a malware process like rkill and restarts before tdsskiller can complete a scan.I doubt there is any real hardware problem because it started happening just after installing software from the internet that is supposed to backup DVDs to a harddrive. I was also experiencing browser redirect problems before. If I can't cure the problem I will have to try to save any data I need by booting it into an OS on a live CD like some version of linux and then do a reinstall of Windows7. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that so if anybody can help it would be great.

Hello. I was just browsing the internet when all of a sudden a fake virus scanner came up (Antimalware Doctor) and started automatically scanning. After about 30 seconds or so of "scanning", I get a window popup saying "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute." So I restarted the PC in Safe Mode, and I no longer get the message. If I do Safe Mode with Networking or a normal boot, I get the message. (Seems to be whenever I am connected to the internet) So naturally, I cannot download any software in time while connected to the internet before it reboots. However, I am on my laptop and am able to transfer files with a flash drive if needed. I have run SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes and managed to get rid of the Antimalware Doctor, but I'm still having problems with "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute." whenever my computer is connected to the internet. Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. While we are working on your HijackThis log, please: Reply to this thread; do not start another! [Sirefef virus]Hi all.It looks like I've picked up a virus while browsing the internet (Drive-by infection). The computer was operating OK except last night I heard it playing a video talking about meryl streep (through the speakers) but there was no window open (a bit sus). Then when I checked this morning, I saw that System Centre essentials, Windows update, Firewall and whatever Windows Defender is now called have all been disabled (computer still functioning OK though...).I then tried to reinstall System Centre Essentials and now get a message every time I boot the computer saying "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work Now". This happens in Normal and Safe Mode.I'm not running a CD Drive emulator, and I'd love some suggestions on how to tackle this given my 1 minute window of opportunity when the computer boots. Thanks![Edit] Just tried rebooting my PC this morning, it looks like I have picked up the sirefef virus (or a variant) - the latest definitions from MSE picked it up. It's still doing the reboot every minute trick though, and the files keep reappearing after i "Clean" them.[Edit #2] I have used Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 (http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk/) to locate the original version of Services.exe in the winsxs folder and copy it back to the c:\windows\system32\ folder (after renaming the one sirefef put there) could have... Hi. I have recently had a few problems with my laptop which is only a couple of months old. A few days ago I received numerous warnings about Trojan threats through Windows Defender. My AVG scanner is not working (looking into this) so I am not yet certain if there is a real threat on my computer.

Anyway, starting yesterday and continuing today, when starting my laptop, I receive an error message saying that there has been a 'critical error' and that the laptop will restart in 1 minute. This morning, I received this message 4 times in a row and only on my 5th restart did I not get the message.

I have no idea whether this error is linked to Trojan threats or anything else but it is very worrying for me, seeing as my laptop is new.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute?
my computer says this each time it is started in normal start-up mode. I recently got the Doctor Malware virus and I downloaded the anti malware software to get rid of it but i cant update it or even find out if it did anything because now every time i try to start up in normal mode i get the message "windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute" and it restarts.
also, i've already tried a system restore
also, unfortunately, i cant even run safe mode with networking. so no internet.
i tried a couple registry cleaner. it seemed to find and fix a lot stuff but then when i restarted the computer and it still shut down right away.

A:Windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute?

Try getting to safe mode and do the following:
Just turn on your computer with F8 pressed.

Choose Safe Mode option.

Logon using your Administrator level user.

Next, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run...

Type MSCONFIG and click OK.

Go to the SERVICES tab and search for Gbp Service.

Uncheck it and click OK.

Restart and see if the problem is gone.

Hey guys. I started getting an error today after about 3 minutes of being connected to the internet and this is now a regular thing. The message I get is this: "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute." This only happens when I'm connected to the internet for about 3 minutes.Unfortunately, Vista is not anymore detailed than that but I did get 3 Error logs in Event Viewer. Hi, I recently (foolishly) downloaded something, and shortly after, noticed that Microsoft Security Essentials had been shut off. When I tried to turn it back on, it told me that the service was missing. I performed a system restore, and now every time I turn on my computer, I am told that a critical error has occurred, and windows needs to restart. I am running Windows 7 64-bit. Thank you.

Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work.

I get this error after logging on, it doesn't matter what account I log on as. Could be a domain or local account. Every time I get this error and it restarts. You can't boot up into safe mode, you get the same error. I tried F11 to boot to recovery and restore windows and it comes up with a black screen with a blinking cursor.
Now just earlier this week I had the exact same error on another PC and was able to F11 and restore windows.

These are both Lenovo PC's, the first one is brand new, the 2nd one has been used for awhile. Has anyone else had these issues? I've searched and it seems like everyone else has said it's a virus, I've ran a kaspersky bootable CD and it doesn't find anything. Also the first one I mentioned is a brand new PC, I doubt it would have received a virus within less than a day.. no one has hardly if at all used it.
IBM says it's a corrupt OS, every forum says it's a virus...

I have moved this thread over, as I felt it was a different issue.

Previous thread - Most of the main services will not start?

I'm running win 7 Ultimate 32 Bit, which has been fine up to a few days ago when on start up reaching the desktop I started getting a window saying "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute." it would then restart and continually loop this way.

I booted to safe mode and had no restart message, so was able to run a virus scan using Microsoft security essentials, however if I booted to safe mode with networking the restart window would show again.

I have looked for the Gbp Service, which I was advised might be causing the problem, but cannot find this in services running.

However, I have found that by discounting the internet, the restart issue does not show, but as soon as I connect to the internet, it pops up and the system restarts.

Does this indicate a virus or trojen of some kind?

Any suggestion how I stop this, as I cannot run a up to date antivirus program without being connected to the internet to get the latest updates?

Happy.

Basically, MSE showed up as a red cross, after clicking "help", I was directed to download one.

I had to uninstall my old MSE and then instal the new one, then it showed Trojan virus was detected. I deleted the virus, then my laptop started to restart within 60 sec automatically.

My system is vista home premium 32.

The restart process happened also under safe mode.

Thanks in advance for your help. It appears I have randomly picked up a virus of some sort wherein whenever I am connected to the internet, my computer gives the "Windows Has Recovered From a Critical Error and Will Restart in One Minute. Did this always happen, or is this something new? If it just happened, did it occur after a Windows update, or you updating a driver? Try restoring your computer to a date before any of this occurred. Does this address the problem?

Dear Bleeping Computer

New user here - and you might be my only hope...

Had a feeling encountered malware today. Quickly closed down IE and ran MalwarebytesAM with its Chameleon which picked up a couple of threats and seemed to remove them. Then ran TDSSKIller as well just to be on safe side. I'm running Win7 64.

However then Windows Firewall turned itself off for some reason. Tried uninstalling then reinstalling Microsoft Security Essentials only for it to get locked in an infinite restart loop with the error "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute" This happens in both normal and safe modes.

Found my way here where others seem to be having similar issues and d/l and used FRST tool to produce a log below. However despite going into advanced boot options, couldn't find the 'Repair My Computer' option, and putting Windows 7 disk in again - there was no repair/upgrade option to get me into System Recovery and give me the Command Prompt. Log file then just taken by clicking on the FTST64.exe in the flash drive.
Anyway log provided below: Any expert help gratefully received!

Hi All,

I have read many, many other threads that address infinite reboot loops, but none of the solutions have resolved my issue. I am hoping the community might be able to help me identify this problem.

I have just recently replaced my CPU and MB with the items listed below. After installing hardware, I ran KillDisk on the HDD, which will zero out the entire drive. The computer boots normally and will load into windows installation without issue. However, once Windows reboots to start windows for the first time, it is unable to do so. The load windows logo screen will load, and approximately right before Windows would normally load my screen goes black, the system turns off, sits off for about 1-2 seconds, and then turns itself back on and repeats this boot process. It turns off and restarts at the same time every time.

Steps I have done so far in an attempt to resolve the issue but failed with no change in the rebooting behavior:

1) removed all non-essential hardware (CPU, 1 stick of RAM, DVD drive, and Video card were the only things left), and tried reinstalling windows.

2) Swapping out one of the 2 RAM sticks I have to make sure it wasn't defective.

3) Trying to install Windows on a new harddrive to rule out that the HDD was defective.

4) trying to boot from the CD (After the initial install had partially finished) to see if HDD was related in anyway.

5) Installed a very simple DVI video card to see if ATI card may be the cause.

6) Resetting CMOS and rein... Read more

Sorry you are having these problems. You have already done the most logical things. If it's not the memory, or the video card, or the hard drive, and the only things you have changed are the cpu and mobo, then you might wonder if there is a problem with one of the two. You could always boot a live CD of Ubuntu to see how your computer responds. Or XP installation sounds like a great idea for a test.

Hi, I seen some post with similar issues but some of their solutions hasn't work for me. Recently my desktop started getting an error stating: "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work now."I tried running safe mode and disconnecting it from the internet, but the errors keeps popping up causing the PC to restart before I could even back up any of my files.I tried booting an mssstool32 from a disk but when it discovers a virus and tries to cleanse it, it says an error has occurred and stops. For now my PC just stays off cause if tried turning it on it'll just go through an infinite error-restart loop until I pull the plug. I really don't want to reinstall windows and lose my files so any help would be appreciated.

Good Afternoon,

So Im fairly adept with computers but I cant seem to solve this problem.

On my VAIO FZN, there seems to be a virus which has taken control of my computer, most likely some sort of rootkit. When the computer starts

it says "You are about to be logged off - Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work now."

after about 3-5minutes. BUT the catch is that this only occurs when the computer has the front LAN switch turned on. when this switch is off it works fine except for that I cant connect to the internet. I have run multiple AV programs which have removed some viruses but obviously not the main problem.
I have also run Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 from my flashdrive which was successful in its scan but since the computer cant get online it wont run the full program (to update), at least I dont think it has.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions,

Thanks so much,
Blake

Hi everyone. I just turned on my computer this morning and got the bsod. I've surfed on different threads to try and solve my problem but nothing worked:

- System restore - On the first attempt i got an error saying that windows could not find a file from the services folder and on the second attempt my restore point dissapeared.

- Safe mode - Returns me to the restart loop.

- Startup Repair - Couldn't find the problem.

The ideea is that i want to try the Reset this PC option with Keep my files but i am not sure how this works. I have 2 partitions, C where my windows is installed and D where i have all my personal files that I don't want to loose ( mainly pictures, videos and some programming resources from university, cpp files, visual studio projects, archives etc).
If i try this option will it keep all my files from partition D or only the ones that are on C (windows partition). The final question is, will I loose my files from the second partition if i try this method ? Or just partially ?

* I don't care if my desktop apps are deleted, I really don't want to loose the files.
** Also, if this doesn't work do you know any method of recovering my files from the hard disk ? Ex: Manually remove my hdd and put it in another PC ?

Thanks in advance !

Hi,

My machine had a virus attack. I used the instructions for Anti-malaware bytes and tried to remove it. Now the machine shuts down as soon it is started. I get an error message saying, "windows has encountered a critical error and will close in one minute". That happens in all the different modes, safe, safe with networking, normal etc and happens with internet on or off.
I am not able to run any logs as recommended by you because I don't get enough time to run anything. The machine boots and just shuts down.

Please help. I have humongous amount of data, that I can't even access because of this issue.

Thanks

Hello,

I am having trouble with a malware infection on my laptop. It is a HP HDX 16 Running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

While browsing the internet all of the sudden a dialog box popped up showing that Live Security Platinum was running a scan and detecting all sorts of malware. Realizing that I never installed a program of that name on my computer I was suspicious and tried to do a search online. Firefox wouldn't open but iexplorer would. I was able to determine that this was some sort of rogue program from the info on the internet and decided to try and run microsoft security essentials to fix it.
When i opened microsof security essential is said that it was experiencing an error of some sort and wasn't working. The whole time i was getting errors from various installed programs. I then tried to use TrojanKiller from gridinsoft, installed it and ran it and it showed various malware detected but wouldn't remove anything unless i bought it(which might have been the better choice). I decided that i would try and reinstall MSE at that point and see if that would take care of the issue. I uninstalled the current installation and reinstalled it. As soon as it finished installing my computer restarted and has been stuck in the critical restart loop since.

I have tried booting in safe mode with networking and installing MBAM but i am not fast enough because the restart still comes up and restarts the computer. It says that windows has encounter... Read more

Hello everyone, I am having some problems and need help.
My problems started last Friday morning when I turned on my computer and found that I had gotten the AntiSpyware Doctor virus. When the AnitSpyware Doctor popped up, I immediately went to go start up Super Antispyware to find the virus and get rid of it. Before I could even start up Super Antispyware I had a message pop up saying " Windows has encountered a critical error and needs to restart". The computer restarted and the message instantly popped up again. My computer was in a restart loop and I couldn't do anything with it. So I booted in safe mode and the message didn't come up. Since it was able to boot into safe mode, I decided to try starting up normally but turning off my wifi card. I didn't get the message when my wifi card was off and was then able to run Super Antispyware. I was able to find the virus and get rid of it, but as soon as I turned my wifi back on I got the message again !

After trying AVG and Malware Bytes and finding nothing, I decided to do a clean re-install of Vista. This seemed to fix my problems and I have not had any problems until today. I had another message pop up saying " Windows has encountered a problem and needs to restart". This time it doesn't seem to be stuck in a loop of restarting. I ran a full system scan and no anti-virus software has found anything. I haven't downloaded anything on my computer since the reinstall. I need some ideas as to how to fi... Read more

If this is the first error message since the reinstall...it's not much to go on. Windows might as well say "something's wrong".You might try the following.Download/install BlueScreenView, http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html.Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file. When scanning is done, Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items.Save the report as BSOD.txt.Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.Don't be concerned if BlueScreen reflects nothing after the scan, if such occurs.Louis

Now this is going into infinite loop. I'm not getting any other options. Web search brings lot's of video's but they all ends up with "Advance Options". In my case the loop is not even bringing "Advance Option"

I was using my grandmother's computer tonight and somehow infected by Live Security Platinum. I used Malwarebytes to remove it by following the directions here.It appeared to work, but after restarting my computer, I keep getting the error, "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute." I open up Microsoft Security Essentials to see what is causing the problem, and the two programs "Win64/Sirefef.Y" and "Win64/Sirefef.B" are labeled as dangerous. MSE cannot scan the computer quickly enough to remove those programs before the computer is restarted. Details provided by MSE shows that "file:C:\Windows\system32\services"I have seen other questions about this problem, but I wasn't able to find anything for Vista, only Windows 7. The solution also appears very specific in each case, with much pasting of results, so I didn't want to mess up my grandmother's computer by following directions that were not exactly correct. I have another computer and USB drive available. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hello all,

I'm not very familiar with ICT in general so please do forgive me if I misspecify my question. I will try my best.

My computer suddenly started to go for some sort of upgrade and was stuck at 0%. I did not authorize anything as such so I figured it was to update to Win 10 (which I didn't want actually). To solve this, I just pressed and held the power button and turned it back on. Then it started to some sort of endless loop from the Medion loading screen to another blue screen with a text that notified me that something went wrong (there was a sad smiley face above the text).

I managed to get to a menu called "Easy Flash Utility" by pressing F4 and now that is where I'm stuck. I have added photos of this. My laptop is a Medion/Akoya. I also have taped the loop thing, so I'll add that too, if that's useful.

Thanks for your time

A:Win 8.1 => 10, problem endless restart loop

I'm sorry this has happened.  I would put in a windows 8.1disk or a third party backup disk or thumb drive such as Macrium reflect or Acronis and boot from one of those. Follow the instructions to retrieve a backup of your operating system. or If you have a Windows backup image of your computer, this would be ideal. You could use your windows 8.1 disk or repair disc to access features that would let you install a backup image, or just fix the boot process if that is all that is needed (I doubt one would be this lucky), and other features that are available. Other than that the last thing you want to hear is do a complete reinstall of your operating system.  But if you haven't made backups, I do not see any alternatives.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then give Microsoft a call and one of the nice people there can walk you through some smart ways to restore your system. (It was their fault per your comment, so emphasize that if they ask for a credit card.  However, I bet they do it free for you because they help people free with installation issues.. This is my experience.  Good luck.

I got someone to reinstall my windows xp because I was getting blue screens of death.
Now I do not have any more blue screens but the first thing I did when I turned on my computer was to plug all my external hard drives into my computer and began to drag files. However, my computer automatically restarted and continued to restart. I took off my external hard drives and after a few more loops, i managed to get into windows. I put the external hard drives back in and it went back to the restart loop.

This morning, I restarted without the external hard drive and it did not restart out of no where yet.

Could it really be because of my external hard drives?

I have windows xp sp2 professional and my external hard drives are Western Digital My Books

A:restart loop windows xp

A restart loop like this is probably due to Windows crashing and automatically rebooting; this is the default behavior of Windows when it crashes. We'll need to disable the automatic restart setting so that you can see the error message being generated. With that message, we can narrow down the problem and find a solution.Start your computer but do not attach any of your external drives. To disable automatic restart on system error:1. Right-click on the My Computer icon (either on your desktop or in the Start Menu) and click on Properties.2. In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.3. Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.4. In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.5. Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.6. Click OK in the System Properties window. Now, start connecting your external drives and do whatever you've been doing in the past to cause the system to restart.Eventually, you'll trigger the system crash. Instead of restarting, though, you'll see the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), it will look something like this:Now, get out a pencil and paper and copy down the information given about the crash. Specifically, everything that appears below the Technical information: line (be sure to copy down that long number exactly!)Post the info here and we can start to figure this out.

I didn't know where to post my problem. It's not exactly a BSOD problem.
So, I have this notebook Sony Vaio NW250AF since 2010. It never had any problem before. Four months ago, I installed Ubuntu with wubi (windows ubuntu installer) and everything went well, until couple weeks ago. Suddenly, my Windows began to restart every time it gets to the initial screen, the one with de Windows' logo. I believe that before this happen, there were an update on Windows, but I don't know if this is the problem.
The wierd part is that I can boot the Ubuntu, it actually starts and that's where I am now. However, I've never accessed any Windows' file from here, because some people say it can cause me problems.
I've tried everything I could find on the internet. Everything people do when there is this kind of loop on Windows. I also tried everything that people suggest when the safe mode gets stuck on classpnp.sys. I've tried bootrec and scan, but since I don't have the disc repair and I'm forced to use the repair on the notebook, I keep getting an error message telling me there is a repair going on. I've disabled the option of "restart whenever gets system error" and it just freezes in a black screen.

Things I've tried in a hardware level. I've removed my memory, i've cleaned everything.

- Windows 7 Home Premium x64
- Original OS
- OEM
- Age of system: 2 years
