Windows XP speedup tips for older systems

Q: Windows XP speedup tips for older systems

I have a bit of a "senior citizen" when it comes to a computer to use. My day to day computer is that one in my signature. Compaq Deskpro with a 1.0 GHz P3 and 512 of RAM. What I usually do to a system like this and slower ones that run Windows XP is I go to System>Advanced>Performance>Settings and uncheck all but: use visual styles on windows and buttons, use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop, use common tasks in folders, use a background image for folder type, and smooth edges of screen fonts. For older even older systems I will uncheck: use common tasks in folders. Just a little curious on what others do.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

All tips welcome.

Registry compactors were mentioned in another thread. Anyone have names of such software, and tips?

Also I once ran across a site which cataloged and index hundreds of files likely to be found in the Startup or Services tabs in the System Config Utility. I lost the link and can't find it now. Anyone know of such a source?

I have some older machines (X60, X60s, X61, X61s), I can download drivers from Lenovo for Windows 8.1 maximum, I wonder how well Windows 10 is supported on these older machines, officially orunofficially? Sure I can just try, but better to ask first, I don't want to bother my system for no good reason. The drivers provided by Microsoft might work as well. Or the Windows 8.1 drivers by Lenovo.

Does anyone know a good source of information on older systems? I'm running a HP Pavilion 4483 (second-hand) from '99 or so and the little info I can find seems conflicting. Specificly, I'd like to add RAM to get this old dog as fast as it can get. HP Support tells me this computer only has 2 SDRAM slots(both used) but opening it up I see 3 slots, one empty. I could pull the 64MB SDRAM out and put in a 128MB but it would be cheaper to just add a 64MB card.

Hello Guys,

Has anyone managed to get older O/S's like Windows 95, 98 and ME running on VirtualBox on Windows 8, I used to be able to run all Operating Systems when I had my Vista set up. Strangely I can install and run DOS and Win 3.1 but not Win 95, Win 98 and Win ME. Anything from XP works fine.

Thanks

A:VirtualBox and older operating systems

Is this a filesystem problem? - Whereas MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 resided on FAT formatted hard disks. FAT32 was for the Windows 9x brigade, and NTFS for XP etc.

Let's see how we used to do it in the old days...

Before you started you needed a boot floppy with CD-ROM support, A Windows '95 install CD, which was not bootable, a CD-ROM drive and a Hard drive usually between 512 and 1024 MB - 1 gig or less - bigger drives were a problem and quite rare then.

You needed a formatted DOS 6.2 or better boot partition with the system files on it to install to, I recall, the method in those days was boot from a DOS system floppy in the a:\ drive, run Format c: /s but not reboot yet, so that the CD-ROM drivers on the floppy would still work and then copy the contents from the CD-ROM to the hard drive, which was faster than installing from the CD-ROM. The DOS commands (in red)were as follows:
A:\>C:
C:\>md windows
C:\>cd windows
C:\WINDOWS>md options
C:\WINDOWS>cd options
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS>md cabs
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS>cd cabs
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS>copy d:\win95\*.*

Where d:\ was the CD-ROM drive. Once the files had copied, it was time to reboot, removing the CD-ROM and Boot floppy.
On rebooting from the hard disk, you were taken to the C:\prompt, and it was a case of navigating to the setup folder that had all the setup cabs in it.

C:\>cd \windows\options\cabs
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS>setup

I think that the setup complained that there was no HIME... Read more

Can anyone provide information or recommendations concerning anti-virus, anti-trojan, anti-adware, anti-spyware or firewall programs that will run under old operating systems, specifically Windows 3.11, Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or DOS 6.x??

I'm looking for freeware or shareware that I can use on an old, cast-off 486 machine with 40MB of RAM. I realize that I'm largely insulated from the majority of malware because of the archaic software I'm using, but I still want to avoid things like boot-sector viruses, and I'd like to secure the system as best I can. Any information, suggestions, comments, guidance, belittling remarks, etc. would be appreciated...

A:Anti-malware for older operating systems?

Hi junklover and welcome to BC.Take a look at www.oldversion.com for some programs you can match to Windows95. You can get ZoneAlarm 2.6 from there and that will work alright. There are also older versions of AdAware that will probably work with 95 but I would try the latest one just for the heck of it. They also have Spybot S&D, but again the latest one will work (see the Spybot FAQs for the fix for 95).F-Prot Antivirus for DOS is free for home use, which almost seems like an oxymoron as I don't think many corporations are using Dos these days. AVG Professional works on 95 so I don't see why AVG 7 free version won't.You are at risk for malware with at least Win95. I just cleaned a machine with 95 on it and it had a number of spyware/adware programs. I cleaned it the lazy way by formatting and loading 98SE . The only belittling remarks I can think of concern me because I should have more for you as I am the King of Old Stuff.

I have a older computer that run just fine with Windows XP and Windows Vista (the computer had not been use, and the current installed OS was W7). Few days ago I reinstalled Windows XP x64 and Windows Vista x64 and they both ended in a disaster.

XP: I installed first the updates by using pre-downloaded servicepacks and then the chipset drivers. XP went to bleeps because installation of Avast failed. I also had a problem with USB-ports which stopped working. Anyway after failed avast installation the operating system wouldnt boot up anymore. I decided the install Vista instead.

Vista: After installing servicepacks I noticed that Windows Update is not working anymore. Tried solving it by installing Fix It tool from microsoft. I encountered another problem where powershell did not install. I gave up on getting the update service to work, and decided to do some benchmarks. The computer froze and after pressing the reset Windows Vista wouldnt boot up anymore.

W10: I decided to install W10 ... everything works now.

I dont remember the older operating systems being so bad, or I am just seeing things through rose-tinted glasses?

SPECS:
MSI P35 Platinum
4x 1Gb G.Skill DDR2 800Mhz
Q6600 Go

A:Is microsoft self-sabotaging their older operating systems?

Probably a combination of rose-tinted glasses and software changing. Here's the thing: Vista and XP aren't supported anymore. This lack of support means they don't receive new features that may be used by modern software. So stuff breaks. The longer the OS has been out of support, the worse things get. Conspiracy theories are silly simply because there is no need for M$ to sabotage old OSes.

Hello. I am trying to hookup a Sega Genesis, Dreamcast, and a Playstation 1 to my HDTV. I have a picture of the back of the TV for your suggestions on what I can buy or how I can use what I currently have to make them all work. I have a Playstation 2 hooked up already using up all of the inputs on the back leaving just HDMI and cable box available to use.

I also have a picture of the game and cable box, so you can see if there is a way that I might be able to hook them all up to the game box and make it connect to the Cable box and somehow use the cable box as the input device for the game systems to the back of the TV.

Here are the pictures: (Should be attached at the bottom).
If you all have any suggestions on any device that may be able to work with this setup, that would be very helpful. The back of the game systems each use their own AV adapter containing red, white, and yellow cables. The genesis has only yellow and white cords (no red). The game box seems to be an AV/RF box with 4 buttons on the front to select which game system to use. Not sure if it is working since it has been stored away for so long.

Thanks for your help. If the TV contained a lot more of those RCA inputs on the back, there would be no problem and would not have to use an external box or input device. Do let me know if you need anymore information. I will try to check back often. I am looking forward to hearing your responses. Have a great day.

(Please pardon my redundancy - I have posted this to the Customer Care Board and Client Service forums - just hoping to correct what I hope was an accidental change in support policy.)
This is not a technical comment but it is a comment about Dell's Technology Support. Recently the support site for laptops, and I presume other areas though I have not checked, was revised to change its structure. In the process many items were removed notably having to do with drivers for older systems. Even if a system is past warranty that does not remove the responsibility for Dell to continue to provide the most recent (even if old) drivers especially since the cost of doing so is trivial. This is especially the case when Dell is the only source for specific drivers. A specific example is a Dell Vostro 3700 laptop which uses the embedded GPU in the CPU as well as outboard nVidia GPU; the hybrid video architecture is such that NVidia provides no driver and re-directs users to Dell's site. In the case of this specific model, most of the drivers that were present a month ago are now gone.
Dell laptops have two things going for them - good products at a good price and a great support site. This has prompted me to continue focusing upon Dell - e.g. two new 5759's in 2017, and to recommend Dell to colleagues and friends. I have had recent occasion to review some very old systems on HP's support site - all relevant drivers continue to be available. I strongly recommend that Dell c... Read more

Hi All. I have had this computer for about 4 years now and my version of Windows XP Prof is 2002 date.
I recently was told by a computer builder who helped me that Windows XP Prof works on a file system called NTFS. I apparently have files that I copied back onto this computer after installing Windows XPp that are of the Fat32 variety. I was not aware at the time that NTFS and Fat32 apparently are incompatible. I have had problems over these years and have zero'd out my hard drive 3 times and reinstalled Windows XPp from scratch. What I was not aware of was that My versions of Microsoft Word and Word Perfect and some downloaded programs are Fat32. I need these programs and cannot afford to replace them. Yet I am having problems with places like Pogo gaming (where I spend a lot of time) and the applets that run there. I have the latest Sun Java installed but it does not work properly (I have tried all ways till I am blue in the face) unless I ALSO leave MSVM installed (particularly in the registry). I only have the latest Java chosen in the advance tab of tools but without the MSVM installed Pogo does not work at all for me. So I have both with the Java 5.7 chosen as program. But I am told that my computer is confused due to the File system problem. I figure it wouldn't do me much good to zero out my system again if I still have to put my old fat32 files back on here to function. So is there anything I can do. I only have a 20 gb hard drive and there is n... Read more

Hello Dannyboy.... after installing W10, did you install the motherboard and chipset drivers for your computer?  Without those your computer will never run correctly and it's a common oversight. W10 has generic drivers to get you up and running, but for your system to function properly you really need those system drivers.

Lately, I've heard some people say that the Unix code is more secure than the Windows code and that the Windows code has many holes and bugs in it. Before, I always thought Unix systems (for example, Mac) were less likely to get infected by viruses only because they had a lower market share. However, I'm starting to wonder if the Unix code is really more secure than the Windows code. Is this true? Also, does the Windows code really have that many bugs and holes in it?

A:Are Unix systems more secure than Windows systems?

It is rather debatable, its harder to compare two completely different codes and say one is flawed and one is not.

Though Unix/Linux does appear to be a bit more secure, which is why Apple's OS X (their baby), is based on a unix-code.

A:Download speedup

I use Free Download Manager but I don't think that really speeds up the downloads. It's sort of like DAP though. I know you can dl tweaks for internet optomization but they really don't work that great. I use one with tweak now powerpack 2005 i what i use right now. It probably needs to be updated. I have an ISP that advertises speeds of DL, up to 1.5 Mb and UL, up to .384 Mb
I am experiencing a degradation of Upload video on my Skype account. So I did an internet speed test, SPEEDTEST.NET, with the following results. DL 1.17, UL .26 and a ping of 29MS over 100 miles.
A month ago I did not have any video problems.
What could be causing the slowdown and can I fix it without buying the faster broadband package? I am otherwise satisfied with the broadband I have.

A:Speedup upload speed

It's not something you can fix, except to find a new ISP. ISPs, especially crappy ones like Comcast and Charter, tend to oversell the bandwidth they have available in any given area, which is why you're seeing a degradation in upload speeds. Ideally the upload/download is symmetrical, but rarely will you see that except in business packages and dedicated lines. Beware any ISP that sells internet packages with a upload speed that's less than 1/3 the download speed. It means they've already overloaded their infrastructure and their service will only get worse as time goes on. All the focus goes to download speed in those situations. You can demand a refund for them not providing the bandwidth they sold to you, but I doubt that will get you anywhere.

Most programs which are protected by copright can only be registered for use on one computer but there are some, e.g. Registry Mechanic, which can be used on more than one computer PROVIDED you have the specific permission of the supplier. This is normally done by contacting the supplier directly. But most EULA regulations forbid copyimg particularly operating system programs.

A:Bios+Cpu ratio setup or speedup?

I'm not an OC'ing expert, but there are more things to change than simply your clock ratio.

Plus, I'm pretty sure that will create extra heat in the CPU.

Hi tempsc My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your malware issue. Since we'll be working together, you can call me Aura or Yoan, which is my real name, it's up to you! Now that we've broke the ice, I'll just ask you a few things during the time we'll be working together to clean your system and get it back to an operational state. As you'll notice, the logs we are asking for here are quite lenghty, so it's normal for me to not reply exactly after you post them. This is because I need some time to analyse them and then act accordingly. However, I'll always reply within 24 hours, 48 hours at most if something unexpected happens; As long as I'm assisting you on BleepingComputer, in this thread, I'll ask you to not seek assistance anywhere else for any issue related to the system we are working on. If you have an issue, question, etc. about your computer, please ask it in this thread and I'll assist you;The same principle applies to any modifications you make to your system, I would like you to ask me before you do any manipulations that aren't in the instructions I posted. This is to ensure that we are operating in sync and I know exactly what's happening on your system; If you aren't sure about an instruction I'm giving you, ask me about it. This is to ensure that the clean-up process goes without any issue. I'll answer you and even give you more precise instructions/explanations if you need. There's no shame in asking questions here, better be safe than sorry!;If you d... Read more

We just recently finished building a FREAKING FAST computer for a friend of mine (spent about 3 grand on this thing so it's nice). We spent weeks shopping around to make sure we were getting good and compatable parts for the best prices possible. The computer runs well but there is one problem. The audio and video during media playback slows and then speeds up back to normal every couple of minutes. It's an equal amount of time when it happens. Games run teriffic and everything else runs teriffic. As I said, this only happens durring audio or video playback. If anyone has heard of this happening or has any suggestions we would appreciate the help. Thanks.

Hello!

I Have windows 7 64bit system, and unfortunately my 7 year old must have stumbled onto some 3rd party installs. Now I can not get rid of Systweaks Advance System Protection, System Speed Up, and Deeal. Every time I uninstall it (either by control panel (as if,,,, i wish) or by a scan or tool remover) It waits about 10 min and re installs its self. I didnt want to post a new topic, was trying to fix myself, but it seems the fix must be custom made for the individuals computer based off their pc's logs. So.... here is what I have done:

Uninstall by control panel (laughable)

ADWCleaner  (also ran in safemode)

Revo Uninstaller

Combo Fix (also ran in safe mode)

Malawarebytes (also ran in safe mode)

Spyhunter (seemed to find all the files, but then wanted my to buy the software to fix...)

Hitman Pro

Should I remove it?

tdsskiller

yet another cleaner

I also have installed first and OTL - but couldnt do anything with it with out your help. Oh the pc is popping up ads, running scans all the time, etc etc. Please anyone, if you could help that would be amazing.... I usually can fix my own stuff, but this one is a real doozy. Thank you!

A:Systweak Advance Sys Prot, Sys Speedup, & Deeal keeps reinstalling

Since you have run ComboFix...please post the ComboFix log, along with the requested DDS log, in a new topic at Malware Removal Logs Forum.

Once that is done, please come back to this topic and post the URL of the new topic you have created.  Once that is done, this topic will be closed and you should pursue the newly created topic in the MRL forum.

Thanks .

@Jeff1017 If by "hardwiring" the two PCs together, you mean using a crossover network cable to connect the two, that only overcomes the issue of using a USB stick. You still need third-party software to transfer settings and/or apps -- as that information is stored in lots of different places and it would take you forever to find them all manually and copy them.

At work I have a PC w/an Athlon XP 1700 chip, 256 meg of ram, and a Radeon AGP w/64 meg memory video card runing Win XP Pro. So my gaming choices are somewhat limited. I've already played Quake 2 and Half-Life (and Opposing Force & Blue Shift). I like playing the FPS style games (single-player mode). So I'm wondering:

Is Counter-Strike single player or only multi-player? Is it free if I own Half-Life?

Is there a site that would list FPS games by release date year to year? Since I know Half-Life was released around 98, I could look for other games released around then that would probably run ok on my system.

Any suggestions for good FPS games that would run on my system would be appreciated. I'm looking into some of the Star-Wars games, also Halo, and Unreal seem to have good reps and might run ok.

Thanks much,
Harold

Right out of the box, Windows is just a so-so operating system. It doesn't really reach its potential until you've cracked it, hacked it, and otherwise bent it to your will.

Whether you want to speed up XP, customize Vista's Aero interface, manage your disk partitions, or do quick-and-dirty photo editing, its mandatory to have a quick look at the Windows.

For more information please do refer to the article from pcworld. Hope it would be useful:

Windows 7 may be Microsoft’s most anticipated product ever. It builds on Windows Vista’s positives, and eliminates many of that OS’s negatives. It adds new functionality, too—all in a package that is less resource-hungry than its predecessor.
And whether or not you're upgrading from Vista or skipping it altogether and moving up from Windows XP, you'll need to know how to make the most of it in your environment. Here are 77 tips and tricks to get you there.
1. Pick Your Edition. Most business users do not need the more expensive Ultimate Edition; stick with Professional unless you specifically need BitLocker.
2. Upgrading? Go 64-bit. As the second major Windows release to fully support 64-bit, the x64 architecture has definitely arrived on the desktop. Don't buy new 32-bit hardware unless it's a netbook.
3. Use Windows XP Mode. Yes, it's only an embedded Virtual PC with a full copy of WinXP—but it's an embedded Virtual PC with a full copy of Windows XP! This is the first profoundly intelligent use of desktop virtualization we'... Read more
