Disabling SMB2 and SMB3 Client from Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Q: Disabling SMB2 and SMB3 Client from Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

There are many programs that are using a shared file on the server from clients from XP to Windows 10. From time to time it seems like there is a network outage and the handle to the file is broken and the file
cannot be read or updated. It seems more prevalent on a Windows 2012 server but may have happened from time to time on 2008 & 2008 R2. However there are not any network problems so it just leaves the server & Client

I have searched for possible resolutions including:-

Turning off the Cache for the share

Disabling the network adapter power setting to allow windows to put the device to sleep.

Disabling Antivirus/configuring it to ignore folders for on access scanning

Disabling SMB Signing

Configuring the clients DWORD registry value SilentForcedAutoReconnect=1 in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\NetCache

Setting the "NET CONFIG SERVER /AUTODISCONNECT:-1" to not drop client
connections

The last bit of trouble shooting that I can think of is to disable SMB2 and SMB3 as that does a lot of caching and batching of packets which could also be the cause of the problem.

I have looked at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2696547/en-us" target="_blank" class="wLink">http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2696547/en-us

I have disabled SMB2&3 on the server as that is very straight forward.
When I get to the section about disabling SMB2 on the client the command fails.

sc config
lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi
After running the above command, it returns an error:

[SC] ChangeServiceConfig FAILED 1059:
Circular Service Dependency was specified.

So it's not worth running the following command:

sc config mrxsmb20 start= disabled

I have tried the command on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 10 just to confirm that it's nothing to do with any particular PC, machines in Domains and Non-Domain machines.

So, my questions are:-

1, is
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2696547/en-us actually correct and up to date and for the OSes (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 2012 server and Windows 10) with latest updates & service packs?

2, How do I disable SMB2 and SMB3 on clients for troubleshooting purposes the server to resolve problems with shared files (multi user access)
3, If I just disable SMB2 & 3 from the server would that force the clients not to use SMB2 when communicating with the server and therefore not caching the directory structure and file not found etc? I have seen posts that suggest this is not the case.
4. Does sc.exe have a bug in it?

Thanks in advance
Rob

Preferred Solution: Disabling SMB2 and SMB3 Client from Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Roger

I realise that I actually typed "Browser" not "bowser" in the command.
I'm testing on a non-internet connected network so I hadn't copied and pasted the command from the test computer.
The command was
sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi

I actually typed
sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= browser/mrxsmb10/nsi

If found a
post where in the comments someone did the same as me!

Thanks once again for your time taken in responding.

I have a friends computer I'm cleaning up via remotely The OS is Vista sp1 or 2.
The computer is infected badly I'm able to install MBAM and hijackthis ect ect but it won't let me run any of my Malware scanner one than a few sec's until they close out completely. MSE ran half way through the scan before it also got completely disabled.

So I'm wondering if there is a regfix or something that would let me RUN the scanners without them getting disabled.

I HATE Windows Vista!!! This worthless piece of junk program takes it upon itself to periodically auto arrange my files on its own which is VERY annoying since I have several hundred documents sorted into numerous folders and I need to have them arranged in a particular manor so that I can find them when I want! However, I can usually fix the problem by doing a system restore but, after it auto arranged the files again this evening, I attempted to restore the system but, it told me that there are no restore points present on my computer!!! So, I tried downloading and installing the bat file for disabling auto arrange in Windows Vista 64 Bit listed in the tutorial per the instructions and I did see exactly what the tutorial said I would. But, I am STILL able to auto arrange the files by clicking on Auto Arrange! So, how do I PERMENENTLY disable this worthless feature?

A:Help with disabling Windows Vista Auto Arrange

Hello doctrout, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The tutorial below you mentioned will disabled auto arrange, but you are still able to turn it back on for any specific folder. I'm not sure what to say other than don't click on the "Auto Arrange" option that will turn it on for that folder. If you do, then clicking in it again will turn it off again for that folder.

I am running a Windows 2003 server with 2 NICS in my office. The internal LAN in the office is on 192.168.1.xxx, subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

The Second NIC installed for VPN has IP address: 192.168.1.95. I have configure RAS to work on the Second NIC. It uses DHCP to give out IP addresses to VPN clients in the 192.168.0.xxx range.

My home network and Vista client machine are on 192.168.15.xxx.

I can connect and register my Vista client machine on the network, but I cannot ping any of the computers, including the server, in the office network. I believe I have to set up some sort of a static route or a classless route, or something like that, so that the VPN client machine (192.168.0.xxx) can hop over to the office network (192.168.1.xxx).

Can anyone help?

By the way, I know that the router is passing the traffic correctly because if I set up RAS to distribute an address to the VPN client in the 192.168.1.xxx range using the existing NIC (not the second NIC in the server), everything works fine.

Please, I beg your help!I was trying to connect to a network, so I downloaded the VPN CLIENT SHREW SOFT indicated by the website of my University. Then I installed it and started to have trouble with drivers and hardware, till it wouldn't boot correctly, it went blue screening. I logged in Safe Mode, uninstalled it all, and disabled the Miniport Filters from Shrew Soft on System Devices. I also removed manually the vfilter.sys. It stopped having trouble to turn on the computer, but I cannot, by anyway, connect my wireless internet (and this is the only way I use it). This is a problem with drivers, when I try to connect the web, it identifies these issues: problem with "Broadcom 4321AG 802.11a/b/g/draft-n Wi-Fi Adapter"; or Internet Protocol Bindings, telling me to make sureInternet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) and (TCP/IPv6) are correctly enabled (but they are).I also tried to follow these steps: http://lists.shrew.net/pipermail/vpn-help/...May/001580.htmlbut they only say to me what I've already done.I cannot connect the internet because of this VPN CLIENT SHREW SOFT and it's really giving me headaches, so I would really appreciate any kind of help! Thanks and sorry for the english!Fabio - Brazil

Hello everyone, I've looked around at other threads related to my issue, and I can't seem to find a correct answer.
I have a computer lab that I've recently installed a Windows 7 Enterprise image onto 35 Dell Optiplex computers (most are 380's, a few older 360's).
I created the image using MDT2010 and used one of the 380's as a reference.
All has been well for about a month or two but recently 6 computers are giving me Windows Update errors with the error code of 80080005.
I have a WSUS 3.0 SP2 server running, and all of my other computers seem to be getting their updates just fine. WSUS has the problematic computers in it's database, but it shows that they haven't checked in for "x" days.
I have Avast 4.8 Professional installed, I have OpenDNS configured to block bad websites, ____, etc. and I also use an Untangle server to prevent access to bad websites. I've ran a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan on the affected computers, as well
as Windows Defender scan, and Windows Live OneCare scans, and all have found no malicious software.
I have also tried resetting the Windows update service as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 as well as a script that supposedly does the same thing, but also resets all previous
update events, but I can't find the script source right now (I had ran it last week, and it didn't work).
I'm currently running a SFC /Scannow on one of the computers, and now it has finished. It gives the... Read more

Alright, I re-attempted to run the "SFC /scannow" command under a Administrator Command Prompt window, and got this error:
"SFC /scannow error message: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"
I searched around a bit, and found a suggestion to check that the TrustedInstaller/Windows Module Installer is running.
When trying to start the Windows Module Installer, I get this error:

Windows Modules Installer - Error 1450 Insufficient System Resources
What a fun problem this is turning out to be. I'd like
to just re-image these computers, but I fear that it'll just happen again and I'm wondering why it's only a handful of computers that are affected, yet I have over 65 machines that were all installed from the same exact image.

I'll keep poking along trying to find something that fixes this darn issue. If anybody comes up with any ideas, I'll gladly try them. Thanks!

Just found this: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/42e2a200-defe-4c6b-a1b3-606836dcfabb
and I'm trying the suggestion to set the registry limit size to "no limit" (setting hex value of 0xfffffff) to see if it works. If it gets the sfc to run, it might fix my windows update issue as well.
I have ArcGIS installed on 25 of the lab machines, and according to the link that I posted above, others have experienced problems after installing the ArcGIS software. ... Read more

Here is what the job posting for a Software Development Engineer in Test reads: The Windows Server Solutions group is under the Server and Cloud Division. Our mission is to promote adoption of Microsoft server and cloud platforms/products by using features that appeal to specific market segments. A:Windows 8 Client Backup In The Cloud, Powered By Windows Azure

Hi there
I think these "Cloud Backup solutions" are actually "Pie in the Sky".

I regularly back up maybe 1TB of data in a few weeks -- what sort of Internet service with a DECENT UPLOAD speed and uncapped bandwidth is ever going to make this viable even if I wanted to do it.

Now I'm only a single home user -- imagine the load on the Internet if loads and loads of us wanted to "Cloud Backup" this volume of data.

If you are talking smaller volumes --well 64 GB USB sticks are available and the latest 1TB "USB powered" mini hdd's are also cheap and a MUCH better solution IMO too.

I am a computer novice.
I have a Dell XPS, used by 4 family members. I am the administrator. The other 3 are Standard users. The all worked fine on Wndows 8.
It came with Windows 8. I was offered free upgrade to Windows 10 by Microsoft and agreed. A little Windows sign told me it was ready and I clicked it. An hour later I had Windows 10 (Home). All working great.
Next time I signed in it came up with the subject message above. Meaning that my other family members can't sign in.
I have seen lots of posts where this happened on Windows 7 & 8 upgrades, but nothing on Windows 10
Srangely, at the same time Google Chrome stopped loading up and I don't seem to be be able to access Microsoft on the web. Not sure if that is anything to do with the same problem.

Hi,
My friend and i at Univsersity have to create a Windows 2000 server and then make a computer using Windows 98 able to connect to it and access files in shared folders.
This is all done using software called VMWare, this prevents us using real computers do to the work, in the probably event we would break them.

The problem is we get stuck near the end of the documentation we are given.
When the user on the 98 machine tries to log in it just says invalid or unknown domain or it might even be password, im not sure at the minute, more likely to be domain as we set up the user accounts ourselfs.

The teacher asked us to try the ping command, to try to connect to each other.
My friend on the 98 machine could ping himself and my machine,
i could pinghost (my machine) but when i tried to ping the 98 machine it said request timed out.
This seemed odd as he could ping my machine but i could not ping his, the only thing i can think of about that is outbound connections have been blocked, but we have been told security is disabled as default on Win2000 servers.

Sorry about the large text file, it wont let me add RTF files on here, i tried to bold the part we are stuck on but it just changed the whole text of everything.
We are stuck on from :
7. Configure a Windows 98 Client
(its near the bottom of the file)

Any help would be appreciated.

I cannot figure out how to get all of my email stores moved from my old PC (Windows Vista/Windows Mail) to my new PC (Windows 7/Outlook 2013). Is there a way to successfully do this or do I need to give up?? When trying to use the export function for messages in windows mail it comes up with an error message to say 'The export could not be performed. An error accured while initializing MAPI.' All my email accounts are POP3. I did find the email stores and transfered them manually to the new PC but I opened them on the new PC in outlook then only a small fraction of emails was there and they were all jumbled up and my folder structure did not transfer. Can this transfer be done or not? Hope to get some useful answer. Cheers, Torsten.

I have a laptop connection connected to ADSL 2+ via ethernet modem (non router) using Win XP.
I have a second laptop running Windows 7.

Both laptops have wi-fi.

How do I connect it so that I can use the internet connection via wi-fi on the Windows 7 laptop?

A:Windows XP Server - Windows 7 Client

its not possible i dont think if you have no device capable of OUTPUTTING a wireless signal.. therefore nothing for the laptop internal wifi to connect to (make sense?) therfore purchasing a adsl router would simply solve the problem.... link below
D-Link Systems D-Link DSL-2640R Wireless G ADSL2+ 4-Port Modem Router Wireless router - 4-port switch (integrated) - EN, Fast EN, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g

this product would set you up for basic networking and more than likely be adequate for general browsing. have a look around they can sometime be found cheaper... remeber to search for an adsl2+ router..

Windows XP Has More Users than Windows Vista and Windows 8 Combined, Avast Says

Security company Avast has published global Windows usage data as part of the PC Trends Report (PDF document) for the first quarter of 2017, revealing that Windows 7 continues to lead the market with a share that?s close to 50 percent.

While it?s important to note that these figures come from computers running Avast, they do align with the statistics provided by research firms whose main activity is monitoring operating system usage, so there?s a good chance these are accurate.

First and foremost, there?s leader Windows 7. According to Avast, the operating system launched in 2009 is currently powering more than 56 million computers where its antivirus product is installed, and this means a share of no less than 48.35 percent.

Windows 10 is growing, the security firm says, and it managed to reach a share of 30.46 percent, which accounts for a little over 35 million devices running Avast security software.

Windows XP still a super-popular choice
But what?s a little more worrying for everyone, including here Microsoft, users, and Avast itself, is that Windows XP, which was launched in 2001 and no longer receives security updates since April 2014, is still running on more than 6.5 million computers. This means that it has a share of 5.64 percent, more than Windows 8 (2.51 percent) and Windows Vista (2.08 percent) combined.

Windows 8 was launched in 2012 as Microsoft?s new revolutio... Read more

Can someone tell me how to get my windows vista mail to windows 7 live mail?

One problem: the windows vista mail is on a hard drive that is non bootable... I have access to the drive via an installation as a second drive on a windows 7 machine.

So I can see the vista mail folder. Is there a way to get the emails and import them to windows live mail?

Reloading windows vista is not an option.

thanks

A:Windows vista folder to windows live mail in windows 7

My original Windows Mail is currently on my Vista Gateway PC.

I recently purchased a new PC (Win 7) and want to move, copy, restore (whatever) all of that original mail from my Vista PC to my new Win 7 PC.

Some facts to know:

Email is on my Vista PC, version 6 Windows Mail.

I have set up windows Mail on my new PC (Win 7) and version is Windows Mail 2012

I already have some email on my new Win 7 PC.

Can I export mAIL from my old PC to an external hard drive and use that as the tool to import Mail on new pc?

Anxiously awaiting a response that will let me do this.

just curious on what the differences were between xp pro and xp media center edition and then what was better about vista...

A:windows xp vs windows xp media center edition vs windows vista

Vista isn't out yet and there are going to be many versions of it, more than XP. XP Pro is the professional version, it has more options open, security options and all that stuff, but these options aren't exactly built for people who don't know what they're doing. So yea... more "professional" options. Media center is like the OS for really dumb ppl who want just want to watch media. It's all basic-like (http://www.lighttek.com/images/mediacenter.jpg), but it has lots of apps for TV tuners and dvd players and all that so you can use your comp as a TV.

Hi,

Try to remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration for Windows 7:

1.
Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start programs and files box.
2.
Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
3.
Type the following command and then press Enter:
netsh winhttp show proxy
Note The proxy setting is listed next to Proxy Server. If there is no proxy server, Direct Access <no proxy server> is shown in the Command Prompt window.
4.
To remove the listed proxy setting, type the following command and then press Enter:

netsh winhttp reset proxy
5.
Click Start, click All Programs, click Windows Update, and then try to download and install updates again.Alex Zhaozx

My problem seems to be multiple issues. When I bought my HP dv6-3120us notebook, running windows 7, I was given no info on Administrator and no manual is supplied. When I contacted HP, I was told that they can give me no info as I'm out of warranty. I could call them, but I'm in the Philippines at present and it would probably cost me $100 to make the call (it's very, very expensive to call the US from here)
I am having a lot of trouble with DEP, it continiously closes IE, even when doing such mundane things like trying to read Wiki entry or my standsard mail such as bills and bank statements. I want to 1) install Mozilla Firefox and 2) disable DEP, both reqiure that I sign in as admin. Any suggestions?

A:Disabling DEP on windows 7

Your user account may already have admin status if you are the only user or you were the first person to set up an account on your notebook - you can check what status your account has by going into Control Panel >> User Accounts.

If it says "Administrator" against your user account name, you can already install software and make system changes using your own account. You can download Firefox here: Firefox web browser | International versions: Get Firefox in your language

Any time I open Internet Explorer, or even just have my computer connected to the internet, I get dozens of pop-ups within minutes. I have Spybot Search & Destroy, AdAware, and CCleaner and run them all on a regular basis, and downloaded google pop-up blocker, but nothing seems to be working. I have Windows ME and I believe my IE version is 6.0. Does anyone have an idea how I can disable these ads from coming up??? Thanks.

We recently did a Windows Update to our Windows Vista Home Premium operated system.

This is the update:
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330)

Installation date: ‎10/‎09/‎2009 2:42 AM

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Important

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an update to Windows Vista that addresses key feedback from our customers. Windows Vista SP1 addresses specific reliability and performance issues, supports new types of hardware and adds support for several emerging standards. After you install this item, you will have to restart your computer.Click to expand...

It says it did it on the 10th, but we actually installed it on the 9th. It always off by a day even if the date and time on our computer is right.

HOWEVER, this has changed the appearance of our system back to something that would be on a Windows 95 or earlier computer. I am very bugged by this and I'm wondering what's happened.

We installed an update for a 'Service Pack 2', hoping that it would fix this problem, but we turn on the computer this morning and nothing's changed.

The icons still have the Windows Vista look but that's about it. I would like to upload a screenshot of our desktop, to give you guys a clear understanding of what's happening however I click the attachment icon above but it doesn't do anything.

In case you need our computer's system information:

Hello everyone,
I am was reading about how DNS on local machines can actually help malware. So I wanted to disable DNS on my local machine completely. That is to say when I execute
Code:
ping www.google.com

from cmd.exe I should get the message could not resolve. How do I do this ? Now obviously I don't want to disable the "Request Timed Out" Message. Since I was reading that it leads to problems in the network. I want to disable DNS from ping completely without any unwanted side-effects to my network. How do I that ?

A:Windows 8.1 - Disabling Ping

DNS can only be enabled or disabled on a global basis. You cannot choose to have DNS enabled but not allow ping to use it. DNS is an essential service for any computer that has Internet access.

Or have I misunderstood your question?

I had the exact same problem with my Samsung, same settings screen. I solved it by downloading the drivers package directly from Synaptics website (NOT from Samsung). It's 110MB, which seems large, but unzip it, run set-up, restart your computer, and palm check will be in the settings.

Synaptics_v16_3_15_1_C_XP32_Vista32_Win7-32_XP64_Vista64_Win7-64_Signed_Acme_Inc

is the full name of the file (it's the first link on the drivers page of Synaptics website)
