Upgrade NVMe SSD firmware to FWNV15 (X1 Carbon 5th Gen) on Linux

Q: Upgrade NVMe SSD firmware to FWNV15 (X1 Carbon 5th Gen) on Linux

There is a new firmware release (FWNV15) for the NVMe SSD of the X1 Carbon 5th. I'm wondering if there is a way to perform the upgrade on a machine with no Windows installed on the internal SSD?

I've installed Ubuntu on the NVMe SSD and have a external USB Drive with Windows 10.

I tried to run the Firmware Update Utility on the "external" Windows 10 but no luck so far. Windows reboots and after it's up again the utility just shows some generic error message.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a booteable ISO.

Any recommendations on how to upgrade the firmware with my setup?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Upgrade NVMe SSD firmware to FWNV15 (X1 Carbon 5th Gen) on Linux

The upgrade utility sometimes fails before it reboots windows with a message like "can't initializie linux system". So I investigated further and found that the updater in fact is an ELF binary $ file fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff
fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.8.13, not stripped Which also seems to be pretty easy to use: $ ./fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff
PROGRESS --- start firmware update.
Usage ./fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff <Model> <Serial> <Firmware> [Option]
Model : Drive Model Name.(Mandatory)
Serial : Drive Serial Number.(Mandatory)
Firmware : Firmware Image file path.(Mandatory)
Option : Additional Option string starts with `-'.(Optional)
PROGRESS --- completed with status(8). And the necessary info which firmware to use is in a file called fwwinsd.pro: $ cat fwwinsd.pro
"THNSF5512GPUK TO","5KLA5102","5KLA5104","TINYCORE","fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff","5KLA5104_NVME.sig","L","TOSHIBA"

I would make a statement with good confidence that either the P70/Xeon EFI firmware or Intel's RST Matrix driver (md raid) is broken. It is not possible to run 2 Nvme drives in RAID on Linux on the P70. None of the Linux distributions I tried (Redhat, CentOS, Arch) seems to be able to see the the disk array. RST & Nvme modules and Nvme-CLI are loaded, but mdadm and nvme-cli are unable to see the array. Everything seems to work, as long as the SATA controller is NOT put into RAID mode. Bummer. Hardware:P70/Xeon(EFI 2.12) + 2x Intel 6000p Nvme (FW1.0)

The linux version of the latest BIOS/ECP firmware (1.44/1.18) for the X1 Carbon 4th gen (type 20FB and 20FC) and X1 Yoga 1st gen (types 20FQ, 20FR) was released Aug 2 (n1ful37w.zip) https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/de/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Direct link: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1ful37w.zip That .zip file contains two .cab files, N1FET70W.cab and N1FHT35W.cab, for the BIOS and ECP respectively. Updating the BIOS in linux for my X1 Carbon 20FB worked fine for me with fwupdmgr, but failed for the ECP. This was because the metadata for the ECP update has a typo. Inside the N1FHT35W.cab file is a firmware.metainfo.xml, with a GUID of: 4c2e5b5c-6467-43af-afeb7bc72d96b9c3 This is incorrect. It's missing a dash, and should read: 4c2e5b5c-6467-43af-afeb-7bc72d96b9c3 Modifying this file within the .cab (or extracting it and generating a new .cab) and then flashing that with fwupdmgr fixed the problem. I've attached the modified .cab file (nested in a .zip file for upload). You can check yourself that the only thing that's changed is the GUID line in the .xml file. This typo should be fixed in the source by Lenovo and reuploaded as perhaps a rev 2 for n1ful37w.zip . Hopefully this hasn't happened for any other firmware update files.

I'm having issues installing linux on my second NVMe drive because of this bug: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/128422/one-of-two-identical-m2-nvme-drives-disabling-due-t... This is a known issue with Intel's firmware and they have issued an update:https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28320/Known-Issue-Intel-SSD-760p-Pro-7600p-Series-SubNQN-C... However, the NVMe Firmware Update Utility seems to not include this most recent version. So, I've searched and read. Gone deep into back pages for any subsantive clue as to what to do.Nothing concrete. Work sent me an X1 gen 4 i7 16 gig ram 500 gig SSD HD w 1040 screen. It's perfect for my mobile needs. Except I somehow got one with the 128 gig SSD which is quickly gettng eaten upbefore I even use it. So, I found a killer deal on a Samsung 950 Pro 512 gig PCIe NVMe SSD.Perfect. It's still wicked fast. Now I need to clone the proprietary software from the 128 gig sata M.2 SSDto the Samsung M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.I downloaded Macrium Reflect andgot an M.2 enclosure. The Samsung won't go in the socket of the enclosure. It just does not slot in. I took the 128 gig drive out of the X1 and tried it in the enclosure. Hello,

I'm running CentOS 7 on E7470, and a few of the devices aren't working, like smart card reader, fingerprint reader, etc. According to some sources, deploying the latest ControlVault firmware/drivers package may fix some of those.
The native installer is built for Windows, and I was wondering if it'd be possible to do the upgrade by either booting a Windows portable/live version and running the upgrade, or, copying the installer to a USB and doing an upgrade in the way it's done with BIOS upgrades on Linux?
Perhaps LVFS? (Although compiling that on CentOS 7 is not really straight forward)
Regards,Milos.

Here's another (risky?) idea: There's a Windows 10 VM running on top of libvirt/KVM, and I can do USB passthru of Broadcom 5880. Driver isn't applied by default, so I'm tempted to try how wrong might things go if I were to install ControlVault2 firmware and drivers for these devices as they're passed thru to the VM.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Hi, I was having issues with my USB3.0 ports yesterday so ran the driver update tool, once I chose to reboot my laptop for the SSD upgrade, the laptop no longer boots up and occasionaly tells me there is a 2103 Detection error with the SSD. I believe, the the PC did not properly install the SSD FW update so would like to reflash it with the same firmware, or backwards roll it.  I can boot into windows from a memory stick and run the firmware update tool and although it can see the SSD - it is displaying the current firmware and thus not allowing me to update. Is there a way that I can bypass this check of the firmware to push the update out again? Thanks

Hi, I'm trying (unsuccesfully) to apply the latest firmware upgrade (1.18) to my T470p laptop, using the only OS I have: Ubuntu 18.04. I tried downloading the CD ISO (r0fuj18wd.iso), flashing it to a USB pen, but the laptop refuses to reboot from there.Further notes:-) from BIOS: I restored defaults, and I also secure boot; my current firmware is 1.17-) I tried both flashing the .iso directly to the USB flash (that shows up as /dev/sda), using dd or other USB flashing tools (even unetbootin from a Windows laptop), and also to create a FAT32 or FAT16 partition, then flash into /dev/sda1, setting also the bootable flag on the partition with fdiskThe result has consistently been the same: when I reboot, after selecting boot menu and temporary boot device, I choose the USB drive, but it doesn't boot anything from there. On a related note, when I insert the USB disk, I see an empty disk labelled "R0FET44U".Is there anyone who succesfully managed to install such a firmware upgrade from Linux and might have a useful hint ? Thanks!

Hello, maybe someone can help me out with the problem I have upgrading the firmware of my T470s. The installed version is 1.11 (from June 2017, I think.). It runs archlinux and is no dual boot system i.e. there is no windows version on it anymore. I have learned that one of the usual ways to update is using the tool fwupdmgr. When I run the tool with "fwupdmgr update", the output is "No releases found for device: Not compatible with firmware version 0.1.11, requires >= 0.1.14" Maybe it is possible to install the current system firmware (which is 1.33) directly with "fwupdmgr install <xyz>.cab", but I don't dare to do so because I don't want to brick the hardware. So my question is: Can this be done savely and if not, is there any other way to upgrade the firmware without using windows? Thanks and kind regards

Hi!X1 Carbon 6th Gen, connected to two seperate (home/work) 40AH docks running different 4k monitors @ 60hz via DP has recently started to blank / lose sync to the connected external monitors after the recent firmware upgrade available via Lenovo Companion and matched here: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/options/n20pf03w.exe Prior to this firmware upgrade, both docks and their respective monitors were functioning entirely normally. The firmware has been pinpointed as the ugprade occured at work first (which started exhibiting the fault) whilst home was OK, then when the firmware was applied to home the fault began to occur. There seems to be no reason as to why the screen blanking occurs, the monitors exhibit symptoms of a cable being disconnected for a short period and then reconnected. I can only assume there is an issue with the firmware on the DP component on the docks. The OS does not seem to record any connected hardware change in logs (as if the dock was disconnected via power/data) rather it seems only the output of the dock to the monitors is faulting. All other system upgrades have been applied via Lenovo Companion and/or via the website drivers list. The fault seems to be exhibited during fast video / screen switching within the OS (Windows 10). Although most frequently during large excel documents (lots of horiztonal and vertical scrolling) Seeking assistance and/or the ability to downgrade the DP firmware on the docks to return... Hello, I bought my P50 in October 2016. It has a SAMSUNG 961 OEM NVMe SSD (SAMSUNG MZVKW1T0HMLH-0000). The Firmware version is CXA7100Q (the drive shipped with this firmware). Since a few weeks I'm experiencing slow performance issues (Windows 10 Pro, 1803). Reinstalling didn't help. There have been some throttling issues as well which is a known bug of the firmware my drive has:https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-sm961-ssd,4608-5.html. This issue has been resolved in a later firmware version. There are newer firmware versions out (the latest at the time of this writing seems to be 7L6QCXA7) but the P50 NVMe Firmware update utility does not include this firmware for the 1 TB version of this drive (only for models up to 512 MB).   Is there any way to obtain the latest firmware for the 1TB version/are there any plans to include the 1 TB model firmware in one of the upcoming FWNVxx firmware update utility versions for the P50 model? Regards, Marcel

I noticed a huge performance drag after updating the firmware and drivers of my XPS 15 9550. The update took place on August 4, 2016.
Performance of my usual apps (Chrome, development tools and IDE, etc.) went dramatically down. Typically, I would say things take about 3 times longer to happen. I checked CPU usage (normal) as well as memory consumption (also normal) to find out that the issue comes from the SSD drive.
On this laptop: 500Gb NVMe thnsn5512gpu7 NV (toshiba). Attached are the results of a benchmark run with AS SSD. All write speeds are abysmal, to say the least... that explains a lot, but I have no idea how to solve that issue, and whether or not it is really related to the latest firmware+drivers update shipped by Dell.
(Note: I checked the BIOS, it seems that the SSD is currently configured in RAID mode. Never touched that option before.)
Any idea? Other users impacted in a similar way. Thanks in advance.

I've read dozens of pages and searched and could not find anything to help. I have a p50 (Xeon ECC nvme SSDs) 1) If I use the Intel RST raid linux fails to see any devices for installation. - Doesn't really bother me because lvm striping is probably fast enough for me. I just wanted to mention it. 2) If I install Qubes, Fedora, Ubuntu, they fail to boot. - I've tried with EFI only, or both/EFI first and both/Legacy First. - rEFInd works fine from the usb and allows me to boot the installed OS as expected. - rEFInd does not work if I install it to the nvme EFI partition. - Boot-Repair does not make the system bootable. I am considering ordering a small 2.5" SSD and the SATA cable and use it for the EFI only if it will work. I'm having trouble decoding the part number. I believe this is the "right" drive that the original disk comes in, but the threads I found have been people searching for the other cable.  3) If anyone knows the correct part number to order for the SATA drive cable for the bay next to the nvme drives I have installed, I would appreciate that! - Is this the kit I need to install the SATA hard drive in the bay next to the NVMe drives?- http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/itemdetails/4XB0L63274/460/7EF7D50A5A7047049A355BF42AAF3C5C#overview

Hi all, I have an 20FB I am installing 64 bit windows on from USB.  Unit is brand new, build date last month orderd with 512GB NVMe SSD. Symptom:  Cant get windows 7 to install on the diskPrevious:   Incorporated USB3.0 drivers into the installer, it reads the USB with no problems                    Copied samsung NVMe WHQL v1.4.17 drivers to the USB.  Got the drivers from here: http://www.win-raid.com/t29f25-Recommended-AHCI-RAID-and-NVMe-Drivers.html                    Booting in Legacy, not UEFI Procedure:    Its basically an F6 install:                          Do a standard install until the "where do you want to install windows" screen.                          Select "Load Drivers" and install the samsung drivers (Samsung NVMe controller nvme.inf).                        Result:  "No drives were found.  Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation. Im not 100% sure that Im installing the correct samsung drivers, but they're the only ones I can find online. Im also not 100% sure which SSD model/type I have installed and I dont want to crack open the unit to find out... I've also tried the windo... Read more

A:X1 Carbon G4 - cant install win7 on NVMe

I have installed Win 7 64-bit on a samsung nvme with great success using the same driver from your link.1. Are you able to locate the driver when you press "search" och "load drivers"? If not, ignore all USB 3.0-ports until Windows 7 are fully installed. According to TP X1 spec pdf, you have one USB 2 and one USB 3.2. What USB-port do you use when connecting your flash drive? (there are both USB 2 and 3-ports on your laptop, be sure that you Only use version 2.0 port when installing Windows 7. Try this even if you included USB3-drivers, just to eliminate potential errors)3. I am 95 % that nvme requires UEFI-boot. Try a BIOS-reset and make sure bootsettings are UEFI-compatible, and starting from USB and NVME next.

Is it possible to replace the SATA SSD with a NVMe Drive? In the 4th generation the the M2 slot was capable of using nvme and sata drives.

I have a X1 Carbon Gen4 1. Installed new Samsung 950 pro 512gb nvme hard drive2. setup bootable usb (2.0) stick with win7, added NVMe and USB3 drivers3. Tried to boot but it would not boot, no matter if I selected legacy or UEFI or both4. Added UEFI to usb5. Wouldnt boot with bios set to UEFI but now it would boot with both and legacy first option, strange6. Go into windows, loaded the NVMe driver but shift+F10 wouldnt work7. managed to get the command prompt via recovery.  copied install files and setup booting8. Drive would not boot.9. Inserted USB, now win7 install worked fine so I just wiped the partition and installed windows10. On reboot, windows wouldn't boot.  It goes to the boot menu.  If I select NVMe, it just goes back to the boot menu. In the BIOS, the boot menu has "NVMe0: <null string>" I've tried resetting bios to defaults, no difference I tried booting to my USB win7 install and running the repair, but that made no difference. The only way I can get windows to boot is if I insert a USB stick (even an empty drive).  Then it boots fine.  (USB HDD must be enabled in the boot menu though.)  I've never seen anything like this before and have run out of ideas. I'm thinking that the BIOS isnt seeing the NVME correctly.  I'm guessing it may have something to do with UEFI.  I could not get the USB stick to boot with UEFI or Legacy initailly.  Then when I added the UEFI file to the USB... Hello, I think this is a Intel RST driver issue. When I'm trying to install Ubuntu 18.04 on a BIOS created RAID-0 array with two NVMe M.2, the installation cannot find the raid array. When using two SATA drives - it works flawlessly. Is there a way to solve this issue? Any driver I can update in the Ubuntu installation? Please help!
