Left Ctrl = mute, Right Ctrl = Master Volume up. Annoying!

Q: Left Ctrl = mute, Right Ctrl = Master Volume up. Annoying!

For a while now, the two Ctrl keys have done Mute and Volume Up. It's really annoying and I don't know what's causing it. Does anyone know what it is, and how can I stop it? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Left Ctrl = mute, Right Ctrl = Master Volume up. Annoying!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yoga 2-11 Yesterday the CTRL-C, CTRL-X, and ALT-CTRL-DEL functions stopped working; strangely CTRL-V works fine. It's very difficult to get the @  and ? symbols to appear, but capital letters using the same Shift key are fine. Also, when I would type, several of the same letter would appear, and when pressing the space bar several spaces would appear. I fixed this issue by adjusting my keyboard settings by setting the repeat rating to the slowest setting. I've used device manager to uninstall the keyboard, also updated drivers, etc, but nothing seems to fix things. Using Windows Key R and OSK to display the onscreen keyboard, and using my physical keyboard for input confirms that the Shift and CTRL keys work. One thing that I noticed: when I touch the CTRL key a round onscreen circle appears and gets smaller and disappears; this is also true for CTRL-X and CTRL-C, but when using CTRL-V the circle does not appear.

My remote desktop session does not appear to be sending the ctrl+alt+left (CAL) or ctrl+alt+right (CAR) combinations to the target machine.

Yesterday everything worked fine. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64 and could successfully RD to my laptop machine, which is running XP Pro SP2. CAL and CAR worked.

Today I installed SP1 on the Vista machine. Now my RD won't sent CAL or CAR.

I downloaded a simple keyboard tester application and installed it on both machines. Locally on the Vista machine, CAL and CAR are detected. Same thing locally on the XP machine. When I RD from Vista to XP and try the keyboard test the program shoes that it is receiving the CTRL+ALT combination but doesn't register when I hit the left or right arrow key at the same time. Interestingly, the up and down arrows *do* register.

I tried the RD connection from XP to Vista. Everything works normally. I tried an RD connection from another XP SP2 machine to my laptop. It works.

Any ideas? Is there some sort of key binding in Vista that takes the CAL and CAR combinations before RD can get them? Is RD in Vista 64 filtering them out for some reason?

Thread title pretty much sums it up: CTRL-A disabled, CTRL Key Works, A Key Works, Other CTRL-combos work. I use CTRL-V, CTRL-C, CTRL-Z, etc all the time.

CTRL-A has never worked for me, in any application. Instead of selecting all, CTRL-A pastes, the same as CTRL-V, only when you use CTRL-A, in addition to pasting, it also makes a system sound, kind of like a knock sound. Out of desperation to identify the sound I looked control panel sounds and listened to all of them, it's not there.

I've never really needed CTRL-A until now because I'm wanting to use a specific application that has no other way to select all except CTRL-A, so I'm now desperate...

Any help will be much appreciated.

This on is quite perplexing to me. This is stemming from a volume problem that I had posted before. I have more detail and have narrowed down the problem but not the cause of such. When ever I click the volume control in winamp, not adjust necessarily, just click, my wave setting in my volume control (pannel that comes up by double clicking the speaker in the tray) drops. Of course this affects my overall volume. It is sparatic and does not drop the same amount two times in a row but will drop everytime I click volume in winamp. I am running winXP pro and have not installed so much as an update since the last time this was happening. The only thing I did change is I set up voice recognition in Office XP but I was having this problem before that. I have uninstalled and cleaned out all winamp files and reinstalled. Any suggestions? Winamp is the only player of any kind that this currently happens with.

Also, whenever I am using winamp to play an mp3 or streaming audio and I open another program, any program, or even just minimize/maximize a window, the audio starts cracking. This also has never happend before except of course when there is a heavy load on the system. As I said I am running XP pro, and FYI a Duron 900 cpu and 448MB RAM. As I am having these problems I am using 5% to 10% of my cpu and have 21000k physical memory availible according to task mgr.

I've got a cordless logitech iTouch keyboard. When I hit the button button on the keyboard, it mutes the "master volume". However WAV volume seems to overwrite the master volume. Meaning if I have an mp3 playing you can still hear it even though master volume is mute.

Strange I know, but it's true.

Sound card is onboard: Intel 82801BA/BAM AC' 97

I've got latest drivers from Logitech, but problem still occurs with different keyboard.

A:Muting master volume doesn't mute all?

I have the same problem. WAV volume level is used instead of master volume. It does not matter if I use my laptops volume buttons or adjust the volume with the volume control in the Control Panel.

My sound is processed using an ALi Audio Accelerator.

If anyone can help with this it'd be super.

Hello. I encountered a weird problem.

I recently bough Acer Aspire 5734Z with Windows 7 Home Edition installed. When I type CTRL + C or CTRL + V my touchpad stops working for a few seconds. Then it get back to normal. And Except this the functions of ctrl + c and ctrl + v works.

This happens all the time, no matter how much I copy, I can copy nothing doing just the combination and my touch pad freezes.

When playing games as GTA Vice City I have problems using WASD movement at the same time as I adjust the screen(camera) with touch pad. Suddenly lot of combinations stop working, and I have to either stop walking around (WASD combinations) and use touchpad to adjust screen, then stop using touchpad and go back to using WASD.

I hope you understand. I am not very good at explaining things. And I really hope to find a solution to this.

When I did first-run of the laptop, the touchpad didnt have scrolling function working. So I went to acer.com, found my computer model, selected Windows 7 Home Edition and installed the newest touchpad driver 64bit. And it worked. Scrolling working. But freezing problems still occurs. And I think it might be some windows 7 anti multitasking function or something.

Hi... I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 with a tricked out Firefox 3 with a bunch of extensions, and all of a sudden today I started notice that Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F, 2 keyboard shortcuts that I use ALL THE TIME, are no longer working in ANY APPLICATION. The F and Control keys are working fine separately and other common shortcuts such as Ctrl + C, V, A, O, and P are working just fine.

I've tried it in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Notepad, Paint and Dreamweaver and Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F don't work in either one of those applications. The weird thing is without doing much of anything, it was working at some point today after I had noticed it WASN'T working, but now I rebooted for another reason and those 2 shortcuts are not working again.

By the way, I went into Vista's Ease of Access center (previously called Accessibility I believe), and everything is turned off.

And I also tried the control key to the right of my keyboard. None of it works.

Very annoying... Anyone got any ideas or know of any app that will help me find out what the problem is?

Thank you very much in advance, any help's appreciated

Hi all!
I need help to use macros properly. It is my first attempt at doing this, and I don't understand what I am doing wrong.

I have found this thread which resembles my problem, but I still do not understand what to do

Basically, I have 2 Excel spreadsheets open.
One is List A, the other is List B (Master List).

I have worker codes in List A, and have to find them in the B list to assign them a code (1) in column M.

What I did was go in my first spreadsheet, and selected the first worker code. Then, I started recording my Macro from there.
Ctrl+C worker code
Ctrl+Tab to second spreadsheet
Ctrl+F to open find box
Ctrl+V to paste the worker code copied from before
Close the search box
Cursor now over Worker code, Move over to column M by pressing the RIGHT arrow 12 times (from A to M)
Type "1" and then Enter
Ctrl+Tab to come back to first spreadsheet
Down Arrow to move on to next worker code

However, the Macro looks like this :
Cells.Find(What:="A4WL7CPA3BRX5", After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlFormulas, _
LookAt:=xlPart, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, SearchDirection:=xlNext, _
MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False).Activate
Application.CutCopyMode = False
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "1"

A:Solved: Macro in Excel help! Using CTRL+V inside a CTRL+F

Macro recorder only record specific actions, not generic actions.
So you can't use it to repeat the steps for other cells.
You have to code it specifically in VBA.

As for your case you can have a lookup formula in column M of the Master list to do the check.

eg in cell M12 of List B, type
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)

this goes to your List A first column to count the number of instances the value in cell A12 occurs.
Assuming there is no duplicate, the result is either 1 if found or 0 if not found.

If there are more than one instances in List A, the formula can be adapted to
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)>0)*1

*1 will ensure that the result which is True or False becomes 1 or 0.

Is there a way to swap the functions of Fn key and left Ctrl key on the keyboard. I'm used to other keyboards where the keys are switched and I keep pressing Fn when I want to press Ctrl.  I figure I'll get used to it eventually, but when I use the laptop in a docking station with a regular keyboard the control key is in one spot and undocked with the Lenovo keyboard the function key is there instead, which makes it hard to get used to. If not is there a way to disable the Fn + Space bar function that changes the screen resolution. The programs I use use control + space heavily and my screen resolution keeps changing when I don't want it to. It's a small thing I know, but very maddening.

A:Is there a way to swap the Fn key and left Ctrl key

dan, welcome to the forum. unfortunately Fn and Ctrl cannot be swapped.   this has been suggested by users many times so i'm sure lenovo will give the idea heavy consideration. Fn + space can be disabled by uninstalling the 'on-screen magnifier' app from the add/remove programs or programs and features control panel depending on whether you use XP or vista.

I Currently use Win Vista Home Prem, and recently my left CTRL key doesn't seem to be functioning correctly. I did a Keyboard test on the key, and the program was able to recognize the key was pressed, so it is not faulty. However, when doing Ctrl-A.Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V etc is does not appear to work. Anywho, so I'm sitting at my computer chatting on FB and everything is fine, then outta the blue Windows Live Mail starts opening. Eventually I realize it opens when I press the left control key. I didn't know what was going on, eventually tried to restart my computer thinking that would solve it, and it wouldn't boot up so I knew I had an actual problem.

Tried the auto-repair option when it told me windows was unable to boot up. This didn't help. I was able to log on using last known good configuration, but was unable to solve the problem. I uninstalled windows live mail thinking it was the problem, but instead it just tryed to install outlook~

I then rebooted into safe mode and re-ran Ewido and it made it 100% through the memory. It is currently scanning the program files folders, the windows folders, and the user folders.

The XPS 15-9530 keyboard requires that you hold the Function key to do home/end (Function+Left is Home and Function+Right is End).  That works fine, but I have found that if Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End are a bit finicky.  Specifically, the key order I have to press to do a Ctrl+Home is Ctrl then Function then Left.  If I do Function then Ctrl then Left, it only sends a Home and not a Ctrl+Home.  Is there any way to work around this?  It's a bit annoying to have my Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End fail so often while I'm retraining myself.

Something is intercepting ctrl-<left click> and bringing up a new internet explorer homepage on my machine. This is over-riding other programs which are looking for this key combination. I can't find any way to stop it from within internet explorer. Any ideas?

OK I've answered the question myself. nVidia desktop manager was intercepting ctrl-<left click>. I've turned it off and all is fine

This happened on occasion in XP also, but now on my new Laptop with Win7 I see it happening again. Every now and again for some reason I cannot select random files (in a file handler) by holding down the CRTL key and selecting desired files with the left mouse button.

Also sometimes the SHIFT key will not let me select the first and last files for a group selection.

And then again on another boot up they both work again until some unknown combination of events messes it up again.

Anybody know what does this ?

What brand laptop? and are you using the touchpad, or a mouse.

If it is the touchpad see if there is a driver update from the laptop Mfg. Also try blowing out the keyboard with a can of air, you may have some food /crud under the keys.

Hello yall, I'm having a very annoying issue with this now. I noticed that the Ctrl+Alt+B key does something to the volume, it seems to toggle it between two states, one of which is louder and one of which is way softer (that's about as specific as I can get) which is quite annoying because I'm using this series of keys for a different purpose. I tried searching the internet but found absolutely nothing on this - any help?

So I spilled water on my laptop a few months ago and a few keys on the left side of my keyboard lost their funcitonality. Slowly over the next few weeks most of them must have dried out, because they started working again, except for my left Ctrl key. I dealt with it for some months now, but as I need to use my laptop more of recent I am finding not having the left Ctrl key unbearable. Any suggestions? I'm assuming it could be electrical damage below the key itself at this point but not sure. Acer Laptop, Model:  V3-571-6443 Thanks, PQ

Hi,There may be some dust/dirt sticking under the key, try to clean it if you can or get a replacement keyboard and install it by yourself, it's not very expensive, something similar to this:http://www.onlinelaptopbatteries.co.uk/index.aspx?pageid=1222107&prodid=14433499&gs=1&gclid=CKyYyvee...I have posted this link as an example, you can get them locally or in online stores.
