zone alarm flaw-patch

Q: zone alarm flaw-patch

One of my tech tv programs mentions,2 weeks ago, a flaw in zone alarm and zone alarm pro which allowed an obscure port to remain open. A patch was promised for both the free addition and the pro addition. I've returned to their site but nothing has been mentioned. Anyone know of this? One worm was enough and I'd like to stay safe!

Preferred Solution: zone alarm flaw-patch

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have gone through all the steps to clean and protect my computer (Windows XP Dell) and thought I was really clever. Took me best part of a day. However, my partner can't now connect to the internet from his laptop, (also running Windows XP), and I am about to fall asleep trying to suss out how to find the IP address of the laptop to add to the trusted zone of Zone Alarms: which keeps flashing up messages that various addresses are trying to access my ports!! Help, before I lose all credibility. My computer is now trussed up like a turkey, and I am about to become single again. My computer is about to become disposable.Computer dunce (PS - read the tutorials about TCP and UDP. A:Unable To Add Laptop To Trusted Zone In Zone Alarm

I'm in the same situation, and have learned a few things. Go to Start > Run >cmd. In the black box, type ipconfig. This will give you the ip address of the computer you're on, as well as the gateway ip address of the wireless router. I also have zonealarm firewall, so I added the ip address to the trusted zone. You may also want to check your wireless router's info because depending on the security you've set, it may ask you for a code (WEP or WPA). Let's start here and see what happens. Sounds like this will be one for many inputs...

As per TMacK's instructions I am moving my thread from the "AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods" forum to here.

I have been really happy with the security that Zone Alarm has offered me so far, but I do have a few gripes with it as of late. If I try to open Firefox while Zone Alarm is running, I will get a "this page cannot be displayed" type error. Same thing if I use Internet Explorer. If I keep refreshing or restarting Internet Explorer it will eventually work. Only them am I able to open Firefox and get it to connect (let me know if that doesn't make any sense). Sometimes I have to shut down Zone Alarm to connect to the internet on either browser and this gets quite annoying. I want to keep the security it brings, but it can e quite a hassle. It also either takes forever or won't allow me to log in to websites like MySpace.com. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thank you in advance for all of your help .

Hello slyblackdragon,I see you have an open HJT log posted in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum. You shouldn't make any changes to your system, while your HJT log is posted, as that could change the results of the posted log, making it difficult to properly clean your system. At this point, the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.I'm closing this topic until you are cleared by the HJT Team. If, after your log has been cleaned, you still need help, please PM a Moderator and we will re-open this topic. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me a PM.

I?m trying to install the security update to patch the Sigred DNS vulnerability on our last Server 2008 x86. It?s being phased out soon but wanted to patch it regardless.
When I try to install KB4565529-x86 it says, ?The Windows Modules Installer must be updated before you can install this package" so I attempted to update the Servicing Stack for 2008 (not R2) which leads me to KB955430-x86 but that also errors out saying
that ?This update does not apply to your system?.
How can I get this patch installed? I?ve already created the script below to put the temp fix in place but want to make sure the patch gets installed as well.

Latest SP2 Flaw Bypasses IE Security Zone
By Larry Seltzer
August 21, 2004

Security researchers have discovered another vulnerability in Windows XP Service Pack 2, but it doesn't appear to be an immediate threat.
The researcher who uncovered the drag-and-drop flaw in Windows XP SP2 earlier in the week has reported that a new vulnerability exposes a hole in the lockdown of Internet Explorer's My Computer security zone.

The lockdown of the My Computer zone is one of the major security enhancements in SP2. Web pages in Internet Explorer run in one of several security "zones," each of which has different security rules. Prior to SP2, the My Computer zone—designed for Web pages stored on the computer itself—had extremely permissive rules. In order to take advantage of them, malware attacks frequently exploited vulnerabilities to get their Web-based pages to execute. Microsoft tightened the rules in SP2 to make it a less inviting target.

In the new attack, the use of an unconventional value in the "Content-Location:" field of an MHTML (MIME HTML) file causes the browser to execute the file in the Local Intranet zone, even though it is run from the local computer. This allows scripting operations that are not permitted in the local zone. MHTML files are a variant HTML format in which accessory files, such as images, can be stored as part of the file itself.

While this example does demonstrate a weakness in the local computer lockdown by ... Read more

Adobe Systems has released an emergency patch for Flash Player in order to fix a critical vulnerability that attackers are already taking advantage of.

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2016-7855 in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures database, is a use-after-free error that could lead to arbitrary code execution.

"Adobe is aware of a report that an exploit for CVE-2016-7855 exists in the wild, and is being used in limited, targeted attacks against users running Windows versions 7, 8.1 and 10," the company warned in a security advisory Wednesday.

Users are advised to upgrade to Flash Player on Windows and Mac and to version on Linux. The Flash Player runtime bundled with Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 and 8.1 will be updated automatically through those browsers' update mechanisms.

Hi I'm new to this so be kind.............I logged onto my computer this evening only to find I cannot get any internet pages. I eventually had to contact my provider. The upshot was, the only way I can get any internet page, was to disable Zone Alarm. I was told that enabling it (Zone Alarm) will result in the same problem as before. I do have windows firewall but ZA is much better.I was told that this problem was down to the new MS updates and having running ZA only denies access to any internet page. I don't understand what's going on as I'm not that compuetr minded - or at least I though I knew some things but after talking to my provider I'm very confused now. I have Zone Alarm 7.0 which I downloaded in mid January. Now I want to add something and I cant because my Zone Alarm keeps asking for a password (which I have reset online several times) which says I am typing in the wrong password. Now I am so frustrated I just want to remove Zone Alarm and cannot because attempts to remove it require the same dumb password.

I restarted in safe mode and removed files that end with rdb, ldb, tmp. No luck.

Attempts to remove from the start menu still ask for password.

Probably with the most recent version of Zone Alarm, something appeared in my MS Outlook. 3 new folders in the folders list: ZA Challenged Mail, ZA Junk Mail & a sub folder of that called ZA Phishing Mail.
I can't get rid of them, can't find where they came from in ZA and I hate them 'cuz they often grab real mail that I don't want filtered.
Do I have to dump ZA completely to get rid of these?
When Outlook loads, a ZA splash screen pops up for a second, says: ZA Security Suite, Powered by MailFrontier.
If I delete the folders in Outlook they just come back again when I close and re-open Outlook. Can't find any reference to this in Add & Remove Programs.
Any BTDT on this?

Its not usual for it to run that much, though I don't monitor it much

You could try trimming your startup programs.

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

This will reduce rescources.

Unless of course, you have something thats trying to get out. Have you run a virus scan lately?

Go to your Winnt\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp directory (I'm 'translating' this from Win98, so you might have to look around a bit) , and rightclick the ZA shortcut you find there.

Choose 'Properties', and just add -nopopup -nosplash to the path, so that it looks like this:

Running Zone Alarm 9.1 (free version) and just got a pop-up saying it said New Network Found and listed an IP address I'm not sure of. And lists a type: Public Network Detected.

Then it gives a choice of selecting whether to keep it in the Internet Zone or Allowing it into the Trusted Zone. Then I can also Name this new network (optional). Then Okay or Cancel.

Is this something new or has someone hacked into my computer and is trying to connect to the internet some other way?

P.S. The box is still up asking for this permission and not sure whether to allow it or not. Or again, have I been hacked?

If a program is trying to get out, then most of the time, yes. But there are some exceptions. However, you may want to use AddAware, as if the spyware cannot access the Web, some of your programs may not work:

go here and download AddAware http://tomcoyote.com/lsindex.html

Download and run, ensuring that Deep Registry scan is enabled. Remove all except any references to Web3000 or new.net. If you're unsure, copy/paste the list here.

Also, whilst you're there, download and install RefUpdate to get the latest updates. Just click Connect.

Hey folks,
I've never seen this before. Upon the advice of one of our own malware experts, I was advised to use a different firewall than the default windows one. I was so unlucky as to choose Zone Alarm free 9. This application has done nothing but reeked havoc on my applications including screen reading apps I need just to get around the computer since I've been blind all of my life as most of you may know. In fact I can't do anything with internet explorer since ZA throws up an alert and my screen reader can't read it. I tried several ways to get rid of the alerts until I find an accessible firewall that doesn't kill my essentials. I have tried using Win Patrol to delete the file that causes the alerts to pop up, I tried uninstalling ZA completely with Revo Uninstaller first, and now ever since, when uninstalling it, I constantly get the message that one of it's files is missing. I can't delete the program files folder directory since the dang thing is running. How do I get this thing out of my way? MSConfig doesn't even allow it to terminate when unchecking it in the list. any input would be great.

Many thanks,

This is based on ZoneLabs instructions, and has proved a safe way of uninstalling ZA:

First, select 'Configure' from the main ZoneAlarm window, then deselect the 'Load ZoneAlarm at Startup' check box.
Reboot. That way TrueVector and other ZA files will not be active during uninstall. This causes most problems.

Now Uninstall Zonealarm by using the Add/remove applet, or from Start menu/Programs/Zone Labs/Uninstall ZoneAlarm.

Reboot. Subsequently verify that the following folders and files have been removed. If not, delete them:

- Directories:

1) Zone Labs from C:\Program Files
2) zonelabs from C:\Windows\System
3) Zone Labs from C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

- Files:

1) C:\Windows\System\vsdata.dll
2) C:\Windows\System\vsdata95.vxd
3) C:\Windows\System\vsmonapi.dll
4) C:\Windows\System\vsnetutils.dll

My initial thought goes back to my initial installation of ZA.I carefully and patiently read the 135 page manual.Implemented (to the best of my abilities) the information.Met with mixed results.Hung in there for over 30 days with it. (free edition, naturally enough for me) Finally said (and to myself, initially.... pride, ya' know) Enough is enough.Heard (read) other comments to the effect that the new ZA version & winXP (expecially SP2) might be ah, somewhat problematic.Installed Sygate (free) and applied what I'd learned about firewalls in generalduring my ZA experiments in trial & error (especially error, unfortunately).Seem to have met with an additional degree of success. That's my story & I'm stickin' to it.Please forgive me if I give any wrong impressions about ZA.I admire any company that produces a needed software program.Gives it away, for the greater good of the greater amount of people.Online.

My OS is Windows XP Home. The security programmes are always enabled and they are updated twice a day.

Zone Alarm shows me that during the past 20 days it has blocked 20208 intrusions, of which 3788 were highly rated. Its Firewall has blocked 20213 attempts, and 32 programmes have been secured for the Internet.

My computer has a Broadband connection for perhaps eight or nine hours a day. I rarely surf and I avoid doubtful sites.

Should I be receiving a thousand intrusions every ten hours ?

Zone Alarm was highly recommended but its high detection rate has me wondering if it shows too many false positives.

A:Value Of Zone Alarm ?

I've been using ZA Security Suite for about two years and had no problems with it. I checked it out with a Tech talk forum, Myway Tech Talk. Extremely knowledgable people on there and they are all of the opinion that ZA is one of the very best anti spyware/virus scanners/Firewall out there. Stick with it, it will keep you safe. If you go in to ZA Alerts and Logs you can turn off the notifications and ZA will happily run in the background and do it's thing without bothering you. Although the quantity of alerts you are getting appears high it's nothing to be concerned about.

Imagine if ZA didn't block!
I think much of this sort of thing is just internet noise pinging you.
Best thing, in addition to ZA, is get a hardware router. Then ZA will not have to work so hard defending you (and writing a loooooooooooooooooong log to your drive), as the router will reject most of that trash. There are days when I watch the router with disbelief as China Telecom, and communication companies from every corner of the world are hitting the router. Yet only 2-3/day actually make it through for ZA to deal with. Of concern are things that are outgoing, and both ZA and the router will make you safer.
At least that's my understanding how it all works

Something's wrong with my Zone Alarm. Once in a while, I notice my internet's going at a painfully slow speed. So I turn off Zone Alarm, and everything goes back to normal. In fact, it's happening right now. I've got Zone Alarm turned off because it's causing my internet to go extremely slow.

Does anyone know why it's doing this and how to fix it?

If you are using the free version, my suggestion would be to turn on the WIN XP Firewall, unistall ZoneAlarm, install one of the other free software firewalls, then disable the WinXP Firewall. How are you connected? Are you using a router? The most important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use ( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx ) is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates. + = http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/...t.aspx?ln=en-us

After I loaded Windows XP home,sp2,I downloaded and installed AVG spyware,AVG virus,Zone Alarm Firewall,Ad Aware, and Spyware Blaster.(all the free versions)

The AVG spyware trial has lapsed.

Zone Alarm and AVG send me e mail, asking me to buy their programs, and they are both cheaper than McAfee or Norton.

If you were to buy one or the other, the Zone Alarm package or the AVG package, which one would you but?

A:Avg Or Zone Alarm?

Im using ZoneAlarm Security suite, it is just great, with the fierce firewall against hackers, i guarantee
besides, McAfee and Norton are not good programs in my opinion. They will slow down your computer much more than Zone Alarm. My advice is, if you want an Antivirus, just think about Bit Defender or Kaspersky ;)

I run the Plus version myself. I have other things to handle what the Pro adds to Plus.

The free version is good ... I got the Plus because there was an instant off $10 coupon, so I got it cheaper than regular retail ... and the relatively small amount of money was worth what the Plus added to the capabilities.
