"generic Host process for Win32" error msg, unable to access volume ctrl

Q: "generic Host process for Win32" error msg, unable to access volume ctrl

Hi,

I've been getting "generic Host process for Win32" error msgs of late, resulting in the volume control not working (missing active mixer or something). Everything works fine after a reboot, but the problem keeps occuring.

I've searched the 'net and apparently other people have experienced the same problem as me. Unfortunately, no one replied to their posts, so I have no solution. Was hoping you guys would!

I'm using WinXP, and Spybot has gotten rid of all the spyware it could fine. I am, however, having problems with Gator I think. Spybot gets rid of it, but the pesky mouse add-on still comes on occasionally (when your cursor changes from an arrow to something else).

Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ok, so since of recently, my computer has been acting really wierd. I would start the computer up normally and everything would be fine. But after spending some time on the internet, mostly around 30-45 min, I would get the same "Generic Host Process For Win32 Services" error message. And then after I close the box, my screen starts to act really wierd. A blank white bar appears between the top blue bar (on my computer) which would usually have the website , etc.. "Tech Support Guy Forums - Mozilla Firefox" and the menu bar. And then the windows box changes from "Windows XP style" to "Windows Classic style" on its own. I am still able to use the computer/internet but after a while, it starts to progressively get slower and slower. I have no idea whats wrong with it. I have Avira AntiVir and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and I have scanned my computer many times but nothing comes up. Please help
I have Windows XP
If you need to know anything else, i'll try my best help but i'm not the best when it comes to computers.
I'm also gonna try to attach screenshots of my computer/error messages.

Thank you

In the past week or so my computer has been experiencing the same problem of win32 error message, which on prompt will reset my toolbar and everything back to previous windows 98 style of the white toolbar and old style of design, i know this has something to do with a virus.

I recently just had the fake Anti-Virus scan maleware on my computer which i succesfully removed with maleware-bytes and Whitesmoke translator which i also removed twice with malewarebytes. Im just wondering if there anything that can cause this sort of problem with my computer, maybe a virus im not catching? Also it seems my computer has been booting up rather slowly and it just seems super sluggish.

Any help would be appriciated just lemme know what you need thanks!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this - I very much appreciate your help & hope you're familiar with this problem.

So lately when I boot my pc, I get the error message...

"generic host process for win32 services encountered a problem..." When I close the error message & open itunes, i get the message...

"itunes detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/video playback may not operate properly." at this point, I can't play any music & hear it.

The problem seems to be getting worse. Now, half the time I can't boot the pc (after inputting my user password to log in, it remains loading/logging in perpetually. In addition, the windows xp 'skins' (for the taskbar, etc.) are not loading - it looks almost like something from windows 95.

Any ideas, or is it "geek squad" time?

Thanks,
Norgalis

The symptoms are these: dialup connection to internet through various browsers, works for a while then suddenly a window pops up and all network connection are broken. The connection to the modem (the socket?) is still connected but the browser is not connected to it, redial window pops up to reconnect but fails because the resource is in use. LAN is also disconnected, but can be reconnected (new socket I guess). Searching around I discovered that the process that is dead is the firewall.

Other details: Windows XP, Eint:BEX P1: svchost.exe

Can anyone suggest the fix? I have tried and then removed various Windows updates to no avail. I think it started when I opened up the firewall to the LAN for SMB connections so I could access a partition from my Linux system in the same way as I have been accessing a drive in the Linux box from Windows. Anyway, I need advice. Thx.

Hey guys,

Ever since I did a clean install about a month and half ago, I've been receiving the "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close" error. I've done massive amounts of Google searches, reading, trying alleged fixes but nothing has worked.

My virus software, Avast!, has also detected numerous viruses stemming from the svchost.exe process. Whether this has something to do with it or not I have no certain idea. A few sites have said they're related in some way but I'm not too sure.

This, as you can imagine, has been getting very annoying, especially with the upcoming release of Black Ops looming and my computer not being up to scratch to play it.

So far, I have tried solutions such as Windows updates, Virus, Adware, Malware, etc. scans, scripting and the such but nothing has yet fixed my problem.

If you can give me a solution that works, I would be very grateful.

Cheers,
RedFOX

PS: If you need logs such as those from HijackThis, I can supply those as well.

i have no idea what this means... it's bothersome. does anyone know what's going on?

there was one time about a week and a half ago that i was at the coffee shop around here ... for some reason, it told me that there was more than one computer with the same ip address on the network. i assumed it was an error with their internet service (it's a free hot-spot) and thought nothing of it. but since then, every time i start my computer it gives me this:

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needed to close."

This error occurred on 5/12/2005 at 3:50:01 AM. (note: except, it's 8:42 PM right now...)

I try to send the error report every time, but it tells me that i need to connect to my wireless network first. Then, it automatically connects me when i close the box, but never sends the report. I asked for more details...

Error Signature:

szAppName: svchost.exe
szAppVer: 0.0.0.0
szModName: unknown
szModVer: 0.0.0.0
offset: 00000000

it then says: "This error report includes: information regarding the condition of Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services when the problem occurred, the operating system version and computer hardware in use, and the Internet Protocol (IP) address of your computer.

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services error constantly

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK... I got a new 250GB Maxtor H.D. and installed it with the jumper set to cable select and the cable hooked up master to my existing 80GB Western Digital HD and slave to the Maxtor. I installed Maxtor's Maxblast 3 and followed the instructions for copying the contents of my existing boot drive to the Maxtor. That went OK. I shut off my computer switched the cables to make the Maxtor the master and booted up my machine. That worked fine too, so I figured I was good to go and I could free up my old drive to use as storage since everything currently on it was now duplicated on my new drive. Here's where I started to get stupid I think. I ran Partition Magic 8.0 and decided to delete the partitions on my old drive because it had three and Maxblast created 3 partitions on my new drive as well so I had six drives and that seemed kind of messy. I rebooted, Partition Magic did its thing and now my machine is not running right at all. I can't run some programs. I get an error message saying "The drive or network this shortcut refers to... " blah blah blah. You've probably seen that one before.
Even worse is the error I get when I try to go to MY Computer.

I do not have all the answers, but do have concerns about the way you cabled this thing. That may have caused some of the problem that you now have. I would suggest getting your cableing correct first. Take a look at this:

Make sure you have the master and slave jumpers setup correctly on your hard drives. The jumper schematic is usually displayed on the top of the drive.

DO NOT mix the master and slave settings. For Example, do not mix Master and Cable Select on the same ribbon cable. If one is Master the other must be slave. If one is Cable Select, the other should also be Cable Select. (Please note that the majority of hard drives are factory default as Cable Select)

One needs also to make sure the drive is placed correctly on the ribbon cable as shown below:

M
O
T
H ==Ribbon Cable=== Slave ===Master (end of cable)
E
R ..................................„» OR „Ί
B
O == Ribbon Cable==Cable Select==Cable Select (end of cable)
A ..............................( as Slave)……. ( as Master)
R
D
Ribbon Cables and colors of 80 pin cables look and are to be used like this:

Motherboard============Slave==============Master
…,,,,,,,,..Blue……………,,,,,,,………..Gray…………,,,,,,,,,,,,,,…………Black

Oh, also remember that the floppy cable red mark is put on opposite as the regular hard drivers. Otherwise, the red mark faces away from you as you work in the case.

I have been getting this clichι error report for about 2 days now. the first one appears at the moment my PC turns on and they just pile up, on over the other every 1 - 2 minutes. I have researched this error a bit before posting it here, it seems other people have had similar errors except mine is different:
- while other only get the message at the moment they turn on their PC (or very scarcely and randomly), mine keep popping up every minute or so.
- other reported loss of sound and internet connection, as well as PC crashing, while my PC seems intact.... for the moment
- The only options i get are "send Error report" "don't send", no "debug" or anything else.
- The errors started occurring after i had to close a "command prompt" window which opened spontaneously and was apparently in the middle of some project as the cursor was moving wildly inside it in a pattern, although no text was visible. When i tried to close the window i had a window open with the "End now" and "Cancel" options available(this not might be related to the problem but I'm clueless as to what is)

Hi,

I see Generic Host Process for Win32 Services error everytime on my Win XP SP3 Professional m/c which is a VM that was hosted on Xenserver.

I tried resolving this issue by following the below steps as a workaround, which still din't worked out:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Create a new folder that is easy to access (C:\Temp).
2) Search your hard drive for these 3 old files, and copy them to C:\Temp.
3) If you didn't find all the 3 files on your PC, copy them from an other PC with SP2, or you can download them from http://www.dlldump.com/. When you download, the date will change on the downloaded files, but that's OK. Save the files into C:\Temp. In my case, I had to download wzcsvc.dll .
4) Restart your PC, and press F8 to enter the startup menu.
5) Select one of the Safe Mode options (without network) for starting Windows. I used Safe Mode with Commnd Prompt.
6) Open the folder C:\Windows\System32, and rename the 3 files (e.g. wscsvc.dll_sp3, ...). Or if you dare, you could delete them...
7) Copy the 3 old files from C:\Temp into C:\Windows\System32.
8) Reboot your PC.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Could any one please suggest exact solution for the same ASAP.

Thank you

Folks:

My name is Ken and I appreciate any and all advice in advance. I dispense a lot of advice on hi-fi boards, but I know just enough about computers to defer to the experts. Feel free to slap me around and teach me a lesson if I appear stupid or violate any board etiquette. I can take it.

Here's the deal:

My computer suddenly lost all of its cookies for sites I frequent.

Then, right after that happened, Norton told me that it stopped some malicious code.

I started getting a "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services..." error and my computer started stalling when I went into Microsoft Word or IE.

I updated Windows, updated my HP software (based on a quick Google search), and scanned my entire system with Norton.

Norton says it killed the "Downloader" virus.

My computer is still bringing up the "Generic..." message and when I try to unmute my volume button, it says there are "no active mixer devices available." I'm just waiting for my computer to freeze up again.

What follows is the DDS file and I've attached the "ark" and "attach" files as zipped files:

Since late last night, I've been getting a Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Error pop-up after about a half hour of browsing the Internet. Originally, if I ignored it or clicked "Do Not Send" (as it appeared as an error report message), my Internet would stop working until I rebooted. However that quickly went away, and was replaced by instead changing my taskbar to a strange, low-resolution version. This still happens, but it corrects itself over time if not instantly. After I received the pop-up while using IE, I would intermittently be either redirected to a random website, or a new tab would open with the website instead. I didn't write down the names of these sites as I simply closed the tabs when they opened to prevent them from loading completely. But, after an hour or so of using Internet Explorer, it began crashing after a few seconds of being run. EDIT: DDS report keeps getting cut off for some reason... Guess that the DDS is too big? Short Story Version: Am getting an empty (but bootable) 500 GB hard drive
up and running. Have my old (but failing) 500 GB hard drive also on same
computer.

Am installing everything again (couldn't clone the old drive because of its problems). When new hard drive boots up, get a Windows Documents
window automatically. Can't get rid of it. Biggest problem is that the
computer is sluggish. After trying to run some software, usually get the
"Generic Host Process Error". However this problem seems the worst
right after booting. How can these problems be fixed ?

Have Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3. Would
appreciate some help.

Thank you very much.

A:[SOLVED] Generic Host Process Error" New Installation

Hi HoosierUser. Why don't you remove the old and failing drive completely, format the new drive and set up the OS? Just back up the data you want to save from the old driver first and then remove it.

Startup problem: When I start up my desktop computer, it will usually just load up to the point of my desktop background, no icons or start bar will appear and it will just sit at the desktop background. I then I have to do a hard restart and try booting up again. Once in a while it will load up like normal, with the icons and start bar appearing, but this is very rare (about 1 out of 10 boots on average.) Also I can't seem to enter Safe Mode when I boot up.

Internet Problem: When I start up my internet (through my mobile broadband USB stick) it will only work for a few minutes and then the internet will lose connectivity and I will get a problem saying...

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Has Encountered A Problem"

After this I can no longer connect to the internet. I have to restart the computer again if I want to connect to the internet, and I have to endure the startup problem (as described above.)

I have tried downloading a fix from Microsoft (KB894391) but it doesn't work. Hope someone can help me fix these problems. These problems seemed to happen after I updated to Service Pack 2 and also tried to update my graphics card drivers.

I've read through a couple post about errors for Generic Host Process for WIN32, but none of them seem to add up to the problem I'm having.

I'll be online, for any amont of time (from 2 minutes, to 5 hours, whatever) and suddenly, out of no where- a message will pop up and say, "error for Generic Host Process for WIN32 and must close, blahblah," but it ONLY happens while I'm online, and after I click close, MSN (my ISP) says I've been disconnected from the internet and asks if I'd like to reconnect. The little icon in the corner, with the two computers showing you're connected, disapprears. Then, if I click on the message that asked me if I'd like to reconnect, and I click yes, it tells me that my modem is already in use or isn't working, and then I have to restart. This is EXTREMELY annoying, considering it just happens randomly, and only when I'm online. I have anti-spywere, addware, but I can't find any anti-virus programs that don't cost money. I'm slightly on the broke side.. Could somebody PLEASE help me get rid of this problem.

I've been looking over a lot sites with users having a problem with the Generic Host Process Win32 error. There have been several variations with the error but there are some consistencies with removing the problem. I do not know where mine came from but I do know that when Microsoft Windows prompted me that an update was to take place for SP3, I followed the instructions. What occured after the installation was an error with the downloading process and then after the reboot, I had the Blue screen error involving a version of an older gdi32.dll or something similar to that. Well, after replacing the .dll, I was able to log back on but then the Generic Host Process Win32 error kicked in. I assumed it had to do with the update so I figured it would correct itself with the SP3 update. It did not and Microsoft had nothing to fix it with SP3. I do not know where this malware surfed in under but it's on there now and AVG did not pick it up. It is eating into my hardrive space and I had to remove a couple of files including AVG as it was not scanning for viruses anymore along with some other programs there were being compromised by the virus.

I even tried to do a system restore three different times and it would not take. Of course some drivers were lost when it booted up and I'm constantly restoring my audio driver and my wifi connection screen is blank. I've also tried going in and removing the Cartroot32 folder and changing some of the .dll's to old per ... Read more

Hi,

Recently, I've been getting a message upon starting my computer that tells me of an error in Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. Data Execution Prevention has stopped some sort of action that apparently may or may not be malicious. The message usually pops up twice, and is followed by a system error which gives the following:

Error report -
EventType : BEX P1 : svchost.exe P2 : 0.0.0.0 P3 : 00000000
P4 : unknown P5 : 0.0.0.0 P6 : 00000000 P7 : 00000000
P8 : c0000005 P9 : 00000008

Error details -

C:\DOCUME~1\(my name)\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb75f.dir00\appcompat.txt

The computer does not generally seem any slower than before, but I've noticed that Firefox will have errors more often, and the volume and volume controls are no longer working. I can't open iTunes either. The message I get when I click on volume control says there are "no active mixer devices available" and tells me to install one by going to Control Panel and clicking on Add Hardware, which of course only notices that I have no new hardware.

Leading up to this event, I had just been using a new wireless network that had been installed a while ago, which I used before with no problems, then I used my computer without internet connection somewhere else. Then I came home to my normal wireless, and this problem came up. The first time I got the error, I couldn't get an intern... Read more

I need help to fix this problem. It started happening sometime Saturday afternoon (8/12) which leads me to believe it is some kind of malware. The error comes up seemingly randomly, and hoses my internet connection. I have tried System Restore twice, tried looking for suspicious file/programs, ran Spybot, scanned for viruses, and nothing has worked. I have looked in the Event Log to see if there was something related there, but there isn't always an error in there at the same time; I'm not even sure if I should be in System or Application section. At one point I thought it seemed to occur at the same time as a DCOM error reported in System.I also tried Microsoft's recommended patches, specifically, WindowsXP-KB894391-x86-ENU.exe and WindowsXP-KB873333-x86-ENU.exe, also no help. It say Window XP SP2 only will encounter Generic host process for win32 problems.

I am currently using Window XP SP3 but just now when i am surfing internet, suddenly it pop out and say Generic Host process for win32 error and etc..

I pressed Send report to microsoft but i get no solution for it.

Anybody can answer my doubt?
Is my computer having problems now? Or some way to fix it?
Thanks.

Hi .I believe that you can amend the MS pronouncement to include SP3, unless a fix was specifically included in SP3. I cannot draw that conclusion.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894391See the date on that notice? At that time, SP2 was the latest version of XP rollups...which would lead me to think that the error also occurs with SP3 (for some users).I would suggest using one of the fixes outlined at http://www.sizlopedia.com/2007/04/28/fix-g...-process-error/Louis

I recently resolved a problem with my browser being hijacked by running CWS Shredder. Since that problem started I have had another problem that just won't go away. I get an error window that says "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close..." After choosing whether or not to send the error report to Microsoft, I get another error window with a 1-minute countdown timer at the end of which Windows shuts down.
The message says that the shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM.

I have installed all Windows updates and run McAfee Virus Scan several times with no results. The error has occured while viewing several web pages using both Netscape and IE.
The problem is occuring on my laptop and it did not happen at all yesterday while at home on the wireless LAN. At work today, using dialup, it has happened several times. As I type this it happened again, and as long as I don't click through the first screen, everything works ok. I don't understand it.

What can I do to stop this from happening short of formatting?

I would appreciate any help.

Hi, I'm running windows XP media SP3, and I'm having issues with the pop up box "Generic Host Process Win 32. I can close out the shutdown process using shutdown -a, but the computer hang's up at some point. Cannot access task master. Cannot use system restore without locking up PC. Also, Windows PC shutdown doesn't always work.

I have used spybot, AVG 9.0, Microsoft scanner. All come up empty. Can anyone help me ID this issue?

Neofx did some wonderful things for me in November--cleared up a number of viruses...now it appears there back.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi,

I have win xp sp2.

A few days back my pc hanged. when i restarted i got the "Generic host process for win32 services error" error. also my nod32 showed svchost error.

I have since then scanned my system with nod32 and found no infection. I have carried out the regedit option too...the closing of ports 445 and 135. Also done winsock reset option. Nothing seems to have worked so far

Since that day i haven't got the "generic host process.." error window but my internet connection icon and local connection icon still seem to hang after a few hours (no specific time)resulting in no internet and when i try to shut down my pc it hangs at "saving your settings" stage and i am forced to manually cut the poweroff. eta1 - after forced manual shutdown when i start the pc everything seems to go back to normal i am able to access internet until the hang happens again.

I would really appreciate any help i can get, please help!

Thanks.

Looking forward

You can try running system Restore and going back to a time before the issue occurred.

You could also boot into Safe Mode and run some cleanup utilities (ie: Adaware, Spybot Search & Destroy, & MalwareBytes). Then reboot and run ccleaner.

Otherwise, I would likely boot from the XP CD and perform a Repair (just to make sure no core XP files are damaged) and then I'd reinstall SP2 (and in my case SP3). And install all of the latest drivers for all of the hardware.

Lastly, copy off the important files and reinstall XP.

About every other time I turn on my computer, I get this Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvienence. I have clicked on send report and nothing has helped this problem. The Error Signature reads:

szAppName:
szAppVer: 0.0.0.0
szModName: unknown
szModVer: 0.0.0.0
offset: 7c918fea

And Error Report Contents reads:
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7f90.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7f90.dir00\appcompat.txt
How do I stop this from popping up?

A:Keep getting Generic Host Process for Win32 Error Mesage

It would seem that you may have an Infection attempt with Msblast.exe. Although this worm was released in 2003 it is still out there. The side note from this site; Msblast.exe could hit YOU! indicates the Generic Host Process issue.

Side Note:

If the worm guesses incorrectly and the remote machine is vulnerable, the process svchost.exe on the target machine will crash. The system may become unstable, but the infection will fail.

When svchost.exe crashes, a message like this may appear on Windows XP:

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" error report...

When svchost.exe crashes, Windows may create memory dumps of the process. These files are usually called user.dmp, svchost.exe.hdmp, or svchost.exe.mdmp.

Hi,

My computer has been experiencing an error at startup: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. This error is duplicated each time that I turn on the computer.

When I click on it to see what this error report contains, it shows: szAppName: SVCHOST.EXE szAppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 szModName: unknown szModVer: 0.0.0.0 offset: 0000273d. The technical information shows: C:\DOCUMENT~1\ToddPA~\Locals~1\Temp\WER8f02.dir00\SVCHOST.EXE.mdmp

When I click through the error report options, the error report is sent to Microsoft and the window automatically closes. Unfortunately any time after that, if I try to initiate any new programs the little hour glass will show for a few moments and then the regular mouse cursor displays without the program starting up (programs that I already have open will generally run until I try to initiate a new action, they encounter an error, or the application hangs up... e.g. I am having to retype this thread from pictures I took before rebooting the computer manually as I did the error reporting described above and the entire thread I had typed couldn't be posted or printed after completing the error report process. Starting over from scratch continuosly is killing me time wise (this is taking two+ hours to complete now versus one) and is very frustrating). Using the run function from the start button does not produce any better results. I will also say that explorer and other programs seem to be taking ... Read more

Hi guys, i'm a newbie on here and would greatly appreciate any/all the help i can get regarding the following error message:
"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services"

- I only receive this error within my browser after a couple of minutes or less on the internet. It comes up randomly and not at specific sites and then just "freezes" my browsing capabilities. I thus need to reboot the whole damn system again....as you can imagine, very, very annoying.

Now i've started with the obvious by searching for more info re: this with no luck at all. Tried everytrhing from reinstalling XP, did the updates, ran security software (AVG 8.5 - is what i currently got), etc., etc... nothing worked.

Did a screenshot of the error message details, can email it to you if need be but this is pretty much the details of the error:

"Error Signature

EventType: BEX P1: svchost.exe P2: 5.1.2600.2180 P3: 41107ed6
P4: netapi32.dll P5: 5.1.2600.2180 P6: 411096ac P7: 0000a3c0
P8: c0000409 P9: 00000000"

Don't know if this is much help, but seriously, its bugging the living S** out of me and i'm sure there must be someone out there experiencing something similar.

Thanx

I started getting this error message within the last week.
The only time I get it so far is when I start or restart my PC.
I am running XP with office 2000.

The error signature is as follows:

szAppName:svhost.exe szAppVer: 0.0.0.0 szModName: unknown
szModVer:0.0.0.0 offset:00000000

The only thing that I have tried so far to remedy this is I uninstalled my HP printer software and reinstalled it. I got the suggestion from the net.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening with my system?

Thanks for the help.
