I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi tonedef -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

What version of Office are you trying to install (e.g, 2003 or 2007)?

Have you changed any file permission settings or "Taken Ownership" of any folders/files?

The "scan disk" that you mentioned running... was it "sfc /scannow"? If not, click on START | type cmd.exe in the Start Search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select Run as Admin

In the screen that comes up type the following:

sfc /scannow (space after sfc) - press ENTER

Let this run. Try Office re-install.

Good Luck. . .

Thanks to anyone who can help. I've searched for this topic and haven't found anything that worked for me. I posted this topic a couple days ago but just now it didn't show up; sorry if I've double-posted.

I'm trying to download itunes for the first time, but I get the error in the title when I try to run the itunes_setup.exe file. When I cancel, I get "The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files\Apple Software Update. The installation cannot continue. Log on as administrator or contact your system administrator."

I checked and confirmed that I am the admin on my PC, and all accounts are set up with full access privileges to these folders. I also tried rebooting in safe mode and logging on as "Administrator" and running the .exe from a flash drive.

I think I had similar problems loading an XP Office Upgrade a few months ago; I finally just gave up. I have Spybot Search and Destroy; it says I'm clean, for whatever that's worth.

Please help! Thanks again.

You are mostly likley on a limited account.
Are you using Xp
Are you the only account. There are other reasons but lets look at this option first

Go to control panel use accounts and click on your user name , it will say if you are and admin of the machine or you are using a limited account.

Take alook at that and post back

Hi, I use my Norton windows scan and I keep getting the message C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared." I talked to Gateway Tech and they told me to back up all files and I did on a previous problem but one disc, the second one was corrupt (so it said). I lost everything. I am afraid to do this again they suggest I redo my windows from the very begining that always seems to be there answer. I cannot afford to lose data now. I am having that error message come up and I cannot use my send to drive E to copy discs properly so I got the updated version of Rioxio since the one I had was out dated so I moved up to Roxio 6 and I cannot do anything as far as coping files to disc. I am upset because a very important file is stuck in Roxio 6 that has my excel spreedsheet and it will not let me open it or copy it to CD. I hope this made sense. Please help if you can. I am running a gateway 700XL with XP Thanks

Hi there,

I have installed microsoft office 07 when first getting my laptop late last year and have had no problem until today. I find this appearing on my laptop upon trying to open up any microsoft office program: Error 2330. Setup cannot get attirbutes for the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Smart Tag\LISTS. Verify that the file exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it.

When trying to open windows live messenger i get this message: The file or directory\Program files\common files\microsoft shared is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility and the same goes for trying to open winRAR and notepad.

I have tried to do the chkdsk utility but on cmd, was told access denied since i do not have sufficient privileges and need to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.

I should also add that my sister was using my laptop today and told me that these error messages came up when she first opened the laptop and said that my log on was even corrupted! (Note: I normally put my laptop to sleep but when my sister opened it this morning it had restarted instead of just waking up as it normally does)

Sorry for the long post but i thought I should be as detailed as i can even though i know very little about computers...

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Hel3nz

Hi guys, I recently removed aol from my system the standard way of add/remove programs in the control panel. However when i did an advanced search of my system to see if it was fully removed, I found an aol file folder in program files, common files, which contains 357 files and 99 folders. C:\Program Files\Common Files is corrupted. How do I fix this?
Whenever I startup my computer I get error messages about the directory C:\Program Files\Common Files is corrupt. I cannot access the folder because it says it is corrupted or unreadable and tells me to run CHKDSK.

I am running Windows Vista 64 Bit.

I ran CHKDSK and ended up with this.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t/Untitled.jpg

I did some more research and found out about CHKDSK F and did that and selected for it to run on computer restart. I than restarted my computer and it did a normal restart and did not run CHKDSK. Now I am stuck.

I can't install iTunes or anything.

Can you help?

A:C:\Program Files\Common Files is corrupted. How do I fix this?

Hi, the message you receive C:\Program Files\Common Files is that all, nothing after common files? Go to start ,all programs, accessories and right click on command prompt select "run as administrator" now at the prompt type:-

Code:
chkdsk /r press enter say "Y" to run at reboot
Restart your computer.

It requires that the command be run as administrator.

Alright here goes... The computer Im using is a Gateway with Windows XP. The virus protection is PC Security Shield. I recieved some malware that popped up (Antivirus Pro). I was able to download an Antimalware program which got rid of the antivirus Pro. I thought everything was fine until the Invader Riskware began popping up through the Virus Protection program. It gives me the options to Terminate or deny. I terminate everytime and it keeps coming back with a different Invader type. Eventually itll stop asking me to terminate and ask if I want to "Rollback". I try it and it says rollback failed. And eventually the computer just goes to a picture of the desktop background with no icons. I cant seem to get my computer into safe mode either. It never gives me the option in the beginning of the start up. Im running out of ideas here people. So any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello,

I guess your Adobeupdater is causing this, because that's the only one I suspect in your log that starts up with Windows where I don't see it running in your processes. This one also runs from a subfolder of the Common Files folder and I guess Windows only reads "common" here since the full path is not between quotes in the registry.

So try next..
Check and fix next entry in Hijackthis (since this startup is not required anyway):

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AdobeUpdater] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater\AdobeUpdater.exe

Reboot your computer.
Let me know if that solved the problem.

I have Winpatrol installed on my computer and have had a program try to add itself to my start up, It's ALG.exe but it's not the real alg that is fond in the system 32 folder. This one is in Program Files\Common and is clearly some kind of adware or worse because it shows to be software made by SornSoft named CPAX20,when I place my mouse over the alg.exe file it shows this info below the alg icon. when I go to the SornSoft site it has a program named CPAX version 2.0 and from reading about it it sounds like adware/spyware.

My question is if I can't find it running through WinPatrol, none of my other security software finds it. AVG, Malwarebytes, Obit 360, Spybot or spyware blaster, it is it safe to assume it isn't running. As I said Winpatrol caught it when it tried to add itself to my start up and I clicked do not allow. Also is there any other information about this alg.exe fake out there? Thanks for any help.

Every time I start Windows the C:\Program files\Common folder opens up.

here is my problem. I read through other posts about this...but I figured every case is a bit different and I shouldn't follow other posts cause they were all a bit different.

I'm writing about our computer at the store I work at. We use it for our register and the past couple of days it has been very slow and on start up an Explorer window pops up and it's Program Files\Common and it has 4 icons helper.dll, _helper.dll, helper.sig and _helper.sig. I've run AdAware and deleted cookies and temp internet files and that doesn't seem to help. I've also just finished running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and after restart after that finished the helper.dll and helper.sig icons were gone but the _helper.dll and _helper.sig were still there and it is still running slow. I've attached my Malwarebytes Log. This computer is a Gateway desktop running Windows XP. We have McAfee installed but I believe the subscription is ended so as soon as I get this figured out I'm going to have my boss set up a comcast email address to get the free subscription.

Any help would be great!!!! Thank you so much!

Hello,

I am new to this site and just read and followed instructions for the SmitFraudFix and the SuperAntiSpyware. I believe i had a rogue IE virus and Trojan Dropper. My folders would not open and my google homepage said i had been infected and to download some software, which i did not, and all these pornographic messages kept popping up. I thought the SmitFraudFix fixed this problem and allowed me to open my folders again but all these adware and tracking cookies and trojan files were detected after running the SuperAntiSpyware. The HiJackThis log can be found underneath the SuperAntiSpyware Log. Thanks so much for your help!!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:

Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.

Hey,
First, I use a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Windows XP, and I have McCaffee VirusScan Enterprise anti-spyware software. I recently had a scan where it picked up on a Generic.dx file that it said it could not delete or quarantine. My computer has run much slower since and I would like to know how to remove it from my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to this problem, I have 8 different svchost.exe files running in current processes when my computer is on. This does not seem right and I was wondering if you could tell whether I am infected from my Hijack This scan.

My Hijack This Scan is here:

Hey everyone, hope the new year has been good to you so far. The title pretty much explains my problem. When I go to my documents the document is listed there but when I click to open it, it won't load. It will however load if I am already in the program which usually opens it. Beside them it says SIG file, which I have no idea what that means. Also, it is just a blank box beside the file name (in my documents list) when usually there is a mini icon showing which program will work to open it. Hope this isn't too vague or confusing.

Thanks in advance.

A:Can only open files if running program - can't do it from my documents

Hi llaurabella, and welcome to TSG.

Any chance you can tell us exactly what operating system you are running and the program you normally use to open the file?

In Windows Explorer, If you right click on the file name of one of the problem files and select Properties, what is the full file name, including the file name extension that is shown for that file?

EDIT: Exactly what does happen when you double click on the file and try to open it?

[FONT=&quot]HI there,

PRECEDING PROBLEMS, MAYBE USEFUL, MAYBE NOT:

For the last month I've had a bewildering laundry list of problems with my computer. Firefox 37.0.1 started using superhigh CPU to open and load pages. Then Thunderbird and Avast! began to do the same when connecting to the internet for download[FONT=&quot]s/updates[/FONT]. Then my printer ditto. When printing, I can't do anything else. (It's Brother MFC 4500+, an ancient workhorse that's never given me a day's trouble.)

Then my mouse went on the fritz; swapped out to another mouse and got the same problem---the pointer freezes and restarts intermittently, then freezes altogether. I can get it working again by unplugging the USB and plugging it in again, but the fix is temporary, maybe hours, maybe seconds. Every now and then I get a Windows message in the taskbar tray tha[FONT=&quot]t "something has happened" and [/FONT]the system can't recognize my USB device.

The problems didn't happen all at once, but rather in the sequence that I've noted. I've run different antivirus and malware and rootkit scans repeatedly, but all come up clean. FWIW, I run good computer utilities every week or so, so the system is squeaky clean that way. I've been limping along.

I checked my Processes and I found "servicenow.exe".

Couldn't find anything specific on that .exe searching Google, but there is a website for "ServiceNow". Don't really know what it is or why it's running.

Can't right click/delete the .exe because it says it is being used.
If I try to end the process a message shows up saying:

"Do you want to end the system process "servicenow.exe *32"? Ending this process will shut down the operating system immediately. You will lose all unsaved data. Are you sure you want to continue?"

If I end it after that, I get a BSOD and when the computer restarts, it is still there and running.

My computers are both running Win 7 64-bit. I am thoroughly confused when it comes to placing programs that I download into their proper folders: That is, program files (x86) vs program files. I have read stuff on this, but still confused. for the most part, even when a dl'd program suggests being installed into PF, I, for whatever reason, place it into PF (x86). Although I have read that placing the program into the wrong folder may cause the program not to work properly, so far I have not had this problem...nor any other problems that I am aware of. Could someone please set me straight on this issue?

A:Program Files or Program Files (x86)-Where to place downloaded program

I let the installer put it where it is supposed to.

If I trust the software I trust they know best where it should be installed/placed.

If I can't trust the software maker why am I downloading/installing their program?

I am trying to uplift our 32 bit Eclipse RCP application to 64 bit end state. In order to do that I have updated all the required dependencies and dlls. Also I am able to launch the application under 64 bit environment only when the application is kept anywhere
outside Program Files or Program Files(x86). When it is installed in the said location it could not be launched , a result view could not be created because it tries to write a search file in the place where it is been installed.

But the main problem is the same set of code works for 32 bit version no matter where it is installed. Also the 32 bit version of application can read or write result to any desired location without being launched as admin. And the 64 bit version of the application
does the same when launched as admin.

In order to find out more I tried with eclipse_mars_x86 and eclipse_mars_x86_64 with different location. When the workspace is
inside Program Files or Program Files(x86) 32 bit of eclipse can access it without being launched as admin but the same can not be done through 64 bit of eclipse, without launching it as admin.

The same behavior is
seen with sample RCP Application which I created  to investigate the issue . The 64 - bit version of the sample application , if kept inside Program
Files or Program Files(x86)  , is not launching(\.metadata\.locl(Access is Denied)). Where in for the same sample application built in 32 bit environment is working fine i... Read more
