Does 'Open Office' have a program to open Power Point presentations?

Q: Does 'Open Office' have a program to open Power Point presentations?

Good morning,

I just did a Clean install of my Windows 10 Home last night after it developed several corrupt files that I couldn't repair. I previously had Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus on my computer but I somehow think that could have something to do with my corrupted files (not letting me utilize Windows Update successfully).

My question: Does the free 'Open Office' program have a program I could utilize to open Power Point Presentations that I had saved on an External Hard Drive? If so, it would keep me from installing Office 2013 again.

When I had Office installed I only used it for the Word Program and to open Power Point programs.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,
2harts4ever

Preferred Solution: Does 'Open Office' have a program to open Power Point presentations?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Several months ago I had to replace my PC. I got a refurbished PC with Vista instead of my former XP. Since the new PC came with a Microsoft Office 2007 trial program, I used that until it expired. After it expired, I installed my old Microsoft Office 2003 which I had from before, and I did NOT delete the 2007 trial version.
Recently I noticed that when I tried to access some e-mail power point presentations that had been sent to me, I would get a box saying that the 2007 trial version was no longer available and when I tried to exit the box, I would get the presentation but without any sound.
At that point, I uninstalled the 2007 trial program including the 2007 power point program, since I already had installed the 2003 versions. Now that I've done that, I am no longer able to open up the afore-mentioned e-mail power point presentations AT ALL! What is wrong?

I try to use Power Point but it won't open. After installing from CD it says:
Setup cannot access the required initialization file C:\Progra~1\micros~1\office\setup\wms\win95\wmsset32.dll. I have even physically copied this file from the installation CD of Office97 into the proper folder and it won't see it for some reason.

A:Getting Power Point to Open

WMSSSET32.DLL is a key component of the Windows Messaging Subsystem (Needed for the advanced MAPI features in office97) Basically it allows you to directly send a document, spreadsheet, or presentation through outlook or exchange32 by clicking File/ Send To/ Mail recipient.

If the error is a 797 error code, Try downloading Eraser97 from
M$KB 176823
and re-installing Office 97

Other suggestions include

turning the DMA off for your CD rom drive,
updating the firmware for your cd rom drive

It would help if you could post any error code following the message

Cannot open a PPS file using Power Point 2007

I get the following error message

The presentation cannot be opened. Your antivirus program may prevent you from opening the presentation. To fix this problem, make sure your antivirus program is current and working correctly. If the problem persists and the presentation is from someone that you trust, turn off your antivirus program, and then try to open the presentation again. If you do this, make sure you turn on your antivirus program again after you open the presentation.

A:Cannot open a pps file using power point

Welcome rohit111 to the windows 7 forums.

One problem that I see is that the file does contain a bad guy or it was made with another version of Power Point
like PP 2010 which is not directly readable in pp 2007.

If the file does contain a virus/trojan, then your AV is most likely doing it's job.
Most AV's will allow you to scan a particular file for bad guys, read the screen after it has finished scanning
the PP presentation that you can't open.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I have a client that has Office 365. They have two people with this issue. It's not really a huge problem but more as an annoyance. Whenever they go to open a document through an Office product (Word/Excel: File>Open>Computer>Browse) the documents appear but they're missing the icons next to their name. There's barely any information on it when Googling this and they all seem to lead to dead ends for us. The two I have found are http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/172/t/194050.aspx and http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/d4b70639-eda4-49b4-b5e5-e0ffd87b16c5/word-and-excel-file-and-folder-icons-missing-in-file-open-dialog-box?forum=officeitpro neither have resolved our issue. I have ran a repair on Office, re-installed office, recreated Windows icons, and opened the programs in Safe Mode to no avail. No Add-Ins are causing the issue. You can see the icons to the left of the files in Internet Explorer when going to Documents. Any help would be appreciated!

I've run a sfc scan, and tried to read the report. found some dll errors but none of them were anything major. everytime i try and open word for example or we could open excel doesn't matter. I get either "The application has failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect" or "set association error" I've tried to set the association and there is not even a option for me to set MS word on the left hand side of the screen i've also tried to look at the file exstentions in default programs and the file extensions seem to all be right. I have also tried to ask this question in the MS office forum but someone with a ton of wisdom moved my problem from MS office to the MS vista OS forum. This problem is ONLY affecting MS Office. I have went though and tried to open every other kind of program and this is the only problem.

my error log in the event viewer has afew errors all say that the following dll files or exe files could not be found. But i can find them in Office14 on MS office under program files, C drive

WINWORD.EVE
MAPISHELL.DLL
ONFILTER.DLL
MAPIPH.DLL
NPAUTHZ.DLL

I have also reinstalled MS office, and used advanced systemcare4, nothing seems to be working. please come into my computer and fix it..

Is there a way to make Open Office the default program over Microsoft Office? Win XP

A:making open office the default program

Have you checked the program configuration, there should be an option to accociate it with open office applications, however dont understand why you would want to do this if microsoft office is already on the pc. . If that does not work, pick an office file, then right click it and click open with. A dialog should appear, in which you should be able to set the respective open office program to open that type of file. To make this permanent just check the box that says somthing along the lines of always using the selected application to open this type of file.

Hi,

Now, on 7, they always open in MSIE8, even though default program for pictures is set to Live Photo Gallery. This happens in both Office Professional XP and Office 2010 Professional beta.

Is there any way to make them open in photo gallery?

BTW The default program to open the jpeg file is already set to open with windows photo viewer. I tried disabling IE8 and then the excel hyperlink ceases to work at all. Why microsoft does not give any flexiblilty about hyperlink file opening programs is beyond me, as they are all microsoft products anyway. The only thing I can think of is that it is microsoft insisting that you keep IE enabled on your windows 7 operating system. First of all let me congratulate and thank you for your excellent service to the computer buffs!!

My old desktop with Windows XP and Office 2003 Pro was perfectly fine for over 5 to 6 years. Since the hard drive failed, I purchased a new HP Pavilion Elite M9641ME desktop on 21/06/2009 preloaded with Windows Vista Home Premium, 64 bit OS. I installed Office 2003 Pro and no mistakes or errors including updates. But whenever the office programs opened, the EULA keeps popping up and every time I have to hit "Accept".

To resolve the issue I attempted the tips suggested by pioneers like you and Microsoft. Basically, attempted the suggestions in Microsoft's KBID 8842002 under "Resolution". I could not see "Run as Administrator"

Secondly attempted the "Work Around" - but could find only "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OFFICE and NOT 11.0 0r any numerical.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the Office with no success. May I request your guidance to resolve the annoying issue?
Thanks & regards.

Hi: my first post and I need help. It seems like I have a very nasty virus and I admit I feel very stupid.

I use Vista 32 bit Service Pack Two.

Basic Problem: I cannot open Word, Disc Clean up, RKILL, Malaware OR ANYTHING. That is because every time I try I keep getting a regular looking dialog box with this exact message:

When I hit the + These programs show up: Adobe, Media Center, itunes, Word, Notepad, Paint, Real Player

Of course none of these work. Then there is BROWS . . . IF NONE OF THESE WORK BROWSE THE WEB
AGAIN, nothing works

Steps I have taken to try to fix.

This is a D630 newly formatted Dell laptop and the user has had it about a month. Yesterday she noted that opening any Office 2007 program (but particularly Word) was very slow. I checked it out, and noted that in the bottom left of the Word document, when first opening Word it said " Contacting C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office..... for information

Outlook said the same thing.

Other users that started at the same time as she did and using the same model of laptop (and same image on the laptop) are fine and not experiencing this problem.

I disabled antivirus and all add ons, no change.
I ran diagnostics, which found one issue (that it did not name) that it said it fixed, but no change
I took out the printer drivers, no change
I repaired office, no change
I checked for any recent updates, nothing since June 19th. She has the latest Office updates (inc SP2)
I checked she didn't have something strange in the TCP/IP bindings.

I need a solution SOON. I downloaded Avast while in Safe Mode and then had it run prior to restarting my laptop in regular mode and that seemed to solve the bulk of my issues. I've tried everything, including various scanners like Avast, Win Patrol, SpyDoc, ComboFixer, GoRedFix, and more but many don't catch whatever it is and others that do detect it just can't seem to get rid of it...I had a huge mess of problems and I think they are solved except for these: 1-Google searches are redirected, unless I "ctrl" click cashe several times at once. In that case usually one of the pages will be a proper page instead of a scam search site or a random junk site.2-OpenOffice docs aren't opening. This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:
Program Name: browserRedirect

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

My Issue:

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. Upon turning on the computer and booted up I got a notification window stating that Windows had been updated and restarted (turned off). At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. After several attempts, eventually it resulted in a continuous reboot, window would repeatedly restart. If I can remember correctly, in the process I got some prompts then eventually a dreaded blue screen perhaps something about windows couldnt find or load a file, i think it had a .dll extension. Well, in conclusion, thats when I decided to perform some tech procedures, check boot sequence, BIOS, the usual troubleshooting. Threw in the Windows XP for a Install repair. After having done the XP repair option it seemed to have made progress beacause I... Read more

I downloaded a file from a bit torrent site and installed it. The file was for autocad 2006 and i thought it was safe (at least i think that was when the problem started)Now I cannot open any programs or even get my computer to start in safe mode.Norton keeps telling me that attempts are happening and giving me an address (ip addresss and net address) and telling me the attempt was blocked. This attempt happens over and over about every 5 minutes.I downloaded hijack this and deleted some files and may have deleted some that shouldn't have been deleted.I don't know if this is a trojan, malware, or spywarewhen I get online it is through norton that i can access it bc opera, firefox, and explorer won't come up.Each time i try to open a file I get an error message asking me which program to use to open it. Also, I can open files if i do so as an administrator. Can someone tell me what this might be or what to look for?ThanksJustin I am not sure if I should put a log file here but in case it is ok to post one it is attached.have run a few cleanup programs and detected a trojan and removed it by running in safe mode and running nortonI cannot run anything from my desktop and have to open everything by running it as an administrator.I also cannot run combofix because i initialize as an administrator then I get the popup that asks me over and over which program to open it with in an endles loop.I can run new logs but need to know what to do first.EDIT: Posts merged ~BP

To check if it is a problem with the email, get your friend to zip up the document and send you. You could unzip it once received.

Couple of issues here.... help!

1) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word doc or excel and try to open it by a click (internet explorer) it opens of the window that comes with the computer to "buy" or ... so I have to save on the desk top, open word or excel then open the document through the software.

2) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word or excel document in (Chrome) it opens a little window which ask if I want to open, save or open/save and where to save it. If I press open another window opens and ask if I want to open it now.
How can I just click on the word or excel document from gmail or anywhere and it just open up instead of opening up the program to open within?

Thank you ahead of time!

I am answering a previous thread that has been closed. For Windows XP users. If you try to open your c drive and it gives you the dialog box asking what program to open it with, and it does the same when you right click the drive and click on explorer, it is a problem with file association. None of the fixes stated in the previous thread worked but I have found a easy solution for anyone that needs the fix.

go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
there will be a link called "Drive Association Fix (Restores default settings for hard drives)"
download this file and save it onto your hard drive (it will be a zip file)
extract the zip file and double click on the file extracted.
it will ask you to confirm the selection, click yes and your problem will be fixed.
It is a regristry file that only restores the defaults for Windows XP. If you have a different OS then you need to look for the same thing that will restore the defaults for whatever OS you have.

have been using open office for several months and really like it but for some reason it will not open now. When i click on the desktop icon it will start to open then the screen just goes blank. I have tried it in all applications (spreadsheet, write, etc.) with same results. I have at times gotten a drop down with a list of filters. I am not the worlds most knowledgeable person on computers and software so i have no idea what this filter thing is. i have tried to select a filter from the drop down but nothing happens. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall but with no success. I desperately need my "write" program so any help would be greatly appreciated!

So I've spent a while browsing and can't find anything related to the problem I'm having.

My girlfriend recently lent me her laptop (Win7 32bit) it was still using IE so when I go to install chrome the built in 'security program' (Win7 internet security 2011 or something like that) tells me that chrome is a threat and wont let me use it.. Now after finding out that Win7 internet security 2011 is a joke and just wants my money I run spybot search and destroy, it finds plenty of viruses and such like which are all removed.

Now I have the strange problem...
When I try to run any program or file the 'open this file with' window comes up. With some programs I can browse the program files and locate the program, select open with (I can't select 'always use the selected program') and away we go, but with others it simply doesn't open or will open the program in the background (unusable) and give me the 'open with' window again.. I have tried putting the Malwarebytes installer on USB but the laptop still gives me the 'open with' window when I try to install that...

...What do??

Thanks in advance, Joey.

Windows XP SP1

My hard drive failed, so I'm starting with a clean
system.

I own Office XP SBE [ word, outlook, excel, publisher ] & PPT 2000.
I also own Word 2002 upgrade.

I need Publisher. Would I be better off purchasing &
installing Office 2003 Pro, or purchasing & installing
PowerPoint 2003?

I do not have access to PPT [ Office XP version ]
locally. I need to complete the installation this
weekend.

Thanks for your advice.

A:power point 2003 compatibility with office xp

My experience suggests its best to have all applications of the same version, so Office 2003 pro would be the way to go.

If its not too late, you could try to get OEM version with the hard drive as the qualifying "hardware".

OEM is significantly cheaper.
