Q: Thinkpad Yoga 2ng Gen - Installing other OSes (Linux or Windows7)

So here is the situation.I've got this great piece of hardware bound to a cruddy OS that no sane person should ever trust (an OS that uninstalls your privately owned and paid for software from other companies during updates potentially costing licensing fees to acquire a replacement license or even damaging system viability if one of those software packages is a driver, without any advance notice). Sane reasonable people should never accept that as business as usual or acceptable. Thus Windows 10 is unacceptable. I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi guys.

Thank you for making this the best forum for win7 issues.
I'm here because I need to know if you guys have an app to organize automatically my software by categories in my start menu. If you know something like that, please tell me. It might be even manually, but I'd like to be able to do that.

See you.

A:how to organize start menu like linux OSes?

in your start menu, you can just simply drag and drop shortcuts to where you want them to go, and you can right-click on shortcut or folder names and rename them to what you like. you have to 'hold' the shortcut over a folder name briefly before it opens, then drop the shortcut in.

or, you can right-click on 'All Programs' >> Open All Users >> then do what you want!

i hope i've understood your question, and i hope this helps!

Not sure why posts asking about installing an OS other than Windows 10 on this device seem to vanish but here goes my attempt for a Linux Specific question. I am unwilling to run Windows 10 because an OS that without any advance notice will uninstall your privately owned and paid for software from other companies during updates potentially costing licensing fees to acquire a replacement license or even damaging system viability if one of those packages is a required driver is unacceptable to me. Due to the aforementioned issues with Windows 10 I am looking to Linux as an alternative for this device. Are there any known Linux Distributions that will fully support the hardware?Does anyone have experience installing Linux and configuring it on this device? What Linux Distribution is most recommended for this device? What additional drivers or software are recommended on Linux to be able to use the hardware to the fullest? Thanks.

I have recently purchased lenovo thinkpad x1 yoga from Germany. I have tried to install different versions of linux ubuntu in dual boot, but none of them seems to work. It boots from the bootable usb and gives the live ubuntu and install ubuntu options but when you enter then it displays a blank screen and nothing happens afterwards. I am facing another issue pretty consistently that the touch screen becomes unresponsive most of the times. When i use the pen it works fine but it does not works with my fingers. Looking forward to some solution as its pretty annoying experiencing such bugs in such an expensive machine. Thanks

Greetings fellow humans!

I am  a retired Navy Chief Electronics Technician, I have worked mainly in maintenance of communications hardware on board navy ships and shore installations. I also taught myself programming starting in 1984 with C64, then C128, then MS-dos.

I quit programming in 1995, but have still built all my own PCs, and have had no need to ever ask for technical help until now.

I have in my home two PCs with each running Win7, the one with the slow internet is WIn7 Pro, the other Win7 home premium. the PCs are AMD APU system, 3Ghz AMD 3870 with 4 cores, the fast one has an Asus Mobo, the slow one a GIgabyte Mobo.

I have multiple wireless devices, and 1 Roku on ehternet cable, both PCs are connected to fast ethernet cables. ALL devices have very fast 50-100 Mbps internet speed, except the one PC.

I have connected the slow PC directly to cable modem, and swapped out the ethernet cable with no change in speed.  I did this before I thought to boot into Linux (Ubuntu Studio 14.04) and run a speed test from that OS.

In Linux am getting 222 Mbps.  IN Windows 7 Pro 5 Mbps. Please remember THESE

Hi again.

So, I was wondering. Can you install 2 or more OSes in one hard drive? I currently have Windows 7, but I need to install an another Windows OS for work and research purposes.

If so, do I have to do anything else before proceeding? Thanks

A:Installing 2 OSes in one hard drive

Yep.

It's called "dual booting".

Google for about 442,000 web pages on the topic.

Here's a bunch of tutorials on it from this web site:

http://www.sevenforums.com/search.php?searchid=6230901

It's a bit complicated. Some would tell you to put the second OS on an entirely separate hard drive.

I had some spare time at home and decided to download and install my free upgrade to Windows 10. I backed up all of my important documents etc to OneDrive as I intended on performing a clean install. Said clean install went flawlessly with Windows 10 installing the first time with no issues or errors. Since I had performed a clean install, all my previous apps, including the stock Lenovo apps, had been deleted. I had anticipated this and only really desired to reinstall the app that automatically adjusts the screen orientation when folding the cover back. So in an effort to find this app and any Windows 10 related updates that may be available I went to support.lenovo.com and used the handy Lenovo Bridge app to automatically detect my hardware and suggest relevant updates. While combing through the suggested software I noticed a BIOS update that noted added support for Windows 10. Hi all,
I'm pretty new to using windows . Previously I used Ubuntu and I still do. I have an external USB drive ( a fujistu 250Gb thing) which I used with linux, using an ext3 filesytem. I've tried using linux to delete all partitions, and also to format it to FAT and NTFS, but windows won't recognise it whatever I do. I just get an error saying that my USB device has malfunctioned.
Any ideas what I can do to get Windows to see it again? It works fine in windows.
Any ideas?
Thanks

A:Windows7 can't see my external HD. Linux can.

FIrst take a look in the Disk Management tool to see any volume that same size is seen there. The drive may be listed as offline and need to be initialized since reformatted from the Linux file journaling system.

For each drive listed a square box is seen on the left side as seen in the image attached below. Once you click on that a right click will bring up a menu of option where you would select "online" and then right click on the main volume to the right to select a drive letter or add a new drive if prompted for that.

Hello all
I want to install linux along with windows 7 on my Dell studio 15. For this as i have read on the threads that C: drive needs to be shrunk as it is the active partition . And for linux at least 10 GB should be kept as unallocated space . But when i tried to shrink my C: drive then the available space for shrinking is shown to be just 39 MB which is highly insufficient . So , please suggest how to increase this size and install linux on my PC .

Any suggestions are most welcome !!
Thanks in anticipation !!

A:How to dual boot windows7 and Linux ?

i would have just pop in the live CD, and use the installer to shrink the space for linux. i shrink or create the partitions inside windows, i let the installer do it, like in ubuntu, it has a slider that you allocate for how much space you want to give for linux, then it creates the needed partition and installs. its that simple!

can you create a screen shot of your disk management to see what u created. right click on computer and choose manage and then click on the disk management on the left.

Hi simonc

well xp>>win 7>>xp shouldn't be a problem. You need to share folders and have the same user id and passwrds. It is a little easier to share win and XP if you are using workgroup instead of "homegroup" . Samba shouldnt be a problem either because it is just accesing the files it doesn't know from win 7 permissions.

How about you give us some more specifics as to what you want to share and with whom.

Visual Proof Tht Windows7 Blows Mac OS X and Linux Away

Quote:
So I finally got around to installing the Microsoft Windows 7 Release Candidate that I downloaded last week.

I know that Microsoft has worked hard to overcome one of Vista’s main challenges: running on relatively low hardware specifications.

Clearly, they’ve achieved that goal based on the screen capture below from my netbook. In fact, they’ve accomplished something that not even Apple has done with Mac OS X, nor has Canonical done with Ubuntu: They have the operating system running without any RAM! If Microsoft can do that, just think of what’s next: computers without displays that project images right in your mind or entering text using a pen instead of keyboard. Oh wait…

OK, I’m joking about the RAM issue, although I was surprised to see that Windows 7 didn’t show any RAM in the System section of the Control Panel. Hey, it’s a release candidate, so there are still going to be bugs, issues and challenges to fix. Besides, so maybe this was Microsoft’s way of trying to make me smile.

You can also see that my MSI Wind with no RAM 2GB of RAM scored a Windows Experience Index of 2.1. That number represents the lowest subscore, which was the Graphics component. Next lowest was the Processor subscore at 2.2. Gaming Graphics was a 3.0 while the Primary Hard Disk score was 4.9. Ironically, the Memory (RAM) score was a respectable 4.5; ... Read more

Now I wish to install CentOS 6 on the first partition of the second hard disk.

I have created the dvd for installing Cent OS also.

How do I configure the boot loader in Windows? If I install Linux on second hard disk, will this overwrite the Windows Boot Loader? How do I create a dual boot system so that the windows boot loader correctly shows linux as an option, so that I am able to load either Windows 7 (existing) or Linux(on second hard disk- not yet installed).

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,
