Problems starting XP in safe mode

Q: Problems starting XP in safe mode

Hi there, I'd really appreciate some help on this.

When I try to start XP in safe mode, I tap f8 as usual, and that's all fine - it brings to me the screen where I can select safe mode etc. I do this.

It then seems to be loading something (lots of lines of writing, yes I know I'm not being very technical) but gets stuck when the line:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys

appears....it just doesn't do anything after this point, even when left for many minutes. I have to restart the computer then.

Would be very grateful if someone could shed some light on this problem and help me with a solution, thank you

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

hi,

I started having problems with my computer after I moved it (it's always been a bit funny about being moved). When I turned it on it would get to the windows screen and then the monitor would turn off, although I could hear my desktop and stuff loading up normally. Could this have been a problem with my graphics card getting dislodged or something?

So I started it in safe mode, and that worked fine, so I just thought I could use that until I could get some advice about the problem loading windows normally. THEN, the next time I came to turn it on in safe mode it loaded but got stuck at a screen full of words, the last ones being mup.sys. So I've searched on google about this and there's loads of different advice, like unplugging usb cables and disabling POST (i think that's what it said). I did both of these but it hasn't helped.

What should I do? Are these two things related or will the mup.sys thing fix itself if I fix the original problem or something?

please help!

Hey,

I am having a problem with a laptop, I am getting a blue screen when starting in normal mode, but if I start in safe mode it starts up and logs in fine.

I am not being told what is causing a problem, just to uninstall any new programs/hardware, but nothing has been installed at all.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Thanks for any help :)

Hi

XP sp3 4 gb ram'

I got a bogus PC Scan virus which cripple my computer:
The desktop was wiped clean of all files.
The quick launch vanished
Internet was disabled
etc

The PC Scan icon appeared in the clock tray. I got bogus warning about buying their product to fix the problems.

I tried to restart in Safe Mode and got the BSOD after the Windows flashscreen appeared at startup.

The tried to restart in normal mode and i got the BSOD.

I disconnected all hardware and tried to restart in safe mode and in normal mode several times and every time I get the BSOD.

I don't know if the PC Scan virus caused the BSOD or not.

I am able to startup from a bootdisc, but the only option is to reinstall Windows

My data is backed up but I would like to recover files from the desktop and program files.

What are my options.

A:[SOLVED] BSOD when starting in normal mode and safe mode

Hi dzz and welcome to TSF,

At this point, considering we cannot acces the operating system, you're left with two options.

1. Perform a System Repair. Boot from the installation DVD and choose "Repair my system". Choose to repair any faults found automatically.

2. A complete reinstallation of your operating system.

When I try to start my comp. in safe mode I get an "input not supported" box floating around the screen.The hard drive sounds as if it still loading but I never am able to really tell.It starts fine normally but I'm having printer problems and need safe mode to correct them i.e. deleting everything and reinstalling.Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.I'm running XP SP2 with all updates.I have a Dell Dimension 4700 with an Acer monitor.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with your screen resolution. While this box is floating around, can you still see your icons and stuff? or is the box floating around a blank screen

hey guys,

so this is a strange issue and any ideas would help and ill try anything here.

So i start up this laptop and the hp screen comes up and loads, then it goes to the safe mode option screen, and no matte what option i choose (even last known good config.) windows begins to load, then it shows an error for literally like .1 of a second then goes back to the hp splash screen. in regular mode it loads the winxp splash screen and the bar goes through once then stops at the beginning again (then i see this split second error screen) the back to the hp splash.

this has me confused because i tried doing an xp repair from disc and it said no HD was found (yet somehow i can get the xp splash screen). I did a HD check in the bios and it came out good on both tests, i tried to access the recovery partition from the hp screen and it doesnt recognize the hotkey (ive tried em all).

About 3 months ago I was having problems with viruses. I thought I got rid of them but ever since then I'm still not able to start my computer in safe mode...I get the 'blue screen of death" with the error STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x80537009, 0xF7C635, 0xF7C63204).

About 2 weeks ago I began getting the error message " Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectedly". During one of those reboots Checkdisk began running automatically, I remember that it stated the "volume is dirty" and that it deleted some files and repaired or replaced some orphaned files. For the last week I haven't gotten the DCOM Server error again.

What happens when you try to run them? Error? Nothing?A good "trick" is to outsmart the malware that may thwart attempts to run things by the name of the executable, so outsmart it.For MBAM, locate and rename mbam.exe to something like jose.exe and see if jose.exe will run.If the software won't even install, rename the installation executable because it can recognize that too.Hopefully, they have not caught on to me yet.

For years now I've been unable to start in Safe Mode because a windows file keeps freezing.

(My PC runs Windows Vista Home Premium x64)

I've tried to repair it many times even with a spc /scannow which results in corrupt file(s) but unable to fix.

Recently I rebooted my PC setting it to it back to the default settings and STILL I cannot open in Safe Mode...it gets stuck at the same place.

Has anyone else experienced this?
What was done?

Hi guys,

Whenever I try to turn my computer on, it passes the Bios screen and the "Starting Windows" screen with the windows logo animation, but then goes black for 15 seconds and reboots.

I can boot up fine in safe mode. I've tried Startup Repair, chkdsk /r /f, and System Restore to no avail. I even tried what someone suggested on a forum by choosing selective startup in MSConfig and disabling all services but system services, but I got the same black screen & reboot.

I've tried to do a repair install but I can't do it from the disk and I can't do it from safe mode.

Anybody have any ideas? I know it can't be too big because windows safe mode works and all my files are there. My Ubuntu partition is working fine as well.

Running Windows 7 64Bit on an Alienware m9750 (yes Alienwares suck, I know)

I really appreciate any help.

A:Safe mode works, Starting Normally does not

Worst case scenario would be a virus. My old XP machine had a similar issue, where it showed the loading screen but then just restarted itself. These were in the days where I didn know about Linux, so you can probably still recover your data. By system restore, you mean the windows thing that goes back in time? If so, oh dear :/
Best thing I could recommend is fully delete any new stuff that you think may have causes it, and if possible, try and get Microsoft security essentials to run in safe mode to scan for viruses.

Hi,

I just tried to start my computer in Safe Mode with Networking and found I could not do it. The option is there but after I select it and it lists all the things that have loaded, it just stalls and does not go any further. I can start it up in regular Safe Mode but not with networking.

Does anyone know how I can get it to boot into this or even why I cannot?

The reason I was wanting to start it in that is because my virus program is never able to scan the boot sector and I thought maybe it would be able to in Safe Mode, but it will only run in Safe Mode with Networking. Does anyone know if it will scan it in Safe Mode with Networking or do they just not scan the boot sector even though the program has that option?

Also, the boot virus detection on my Asus motherboard has always been set to disable, is that the best setting or should I enable it? Since my virus scan is never able to scan the boot sector I was thinking I should enable that, but I don't know so I thought I would ask.

Thank you to everyone who will help.

ok well i just moved into my on campus apartment at school that was built horrendously in the 1970's... there's one 2 socket outlet in the whole room which i guess has a weak current. i plugged in my computer and other peripherals through a surge protector and within 2 days, my computer got this nasty habit of just shutting right off wihtout warning. it took me a while to notice, but i saw that the fan on the back of the power supply wasnt spinning, and thought at first that it could just be dust. suffice to say i wasted a whole can of dust remover with little effect and actually got more use out of the little nozzle straw manually propelling the fan blades to get it to start spinning again.. once the fan started spinning the computer would run for a few hours and then do the same thing. after a few days of this, windows xp would prompt me to start up windows in safe mode, last good configuration or normally... last good configuration and normal config would just cause the computer to go right back through the booting up process with no result... i went on safe mode, chose the option to run chkdisk and it told me to restart... i restarted and tried to go back to safe mode, but the fan stopped spinning and it shut off again. frustrated, i unplugged my roommate's computer and plugged mine directly into the wall to see if it made a difference... it did, and the fan worked perfectly fine... this time however when i tried to load up safe mode, it got all the way to ... So yesterday the lights went out while I was using my computer. When they came back on, as I turned the computer on it asked how I would like to start windows. I selected to start it normally, but as it turned on it had the appearance like I was starting at safe mode. I restarted my computer to see if anything changed, but it continued this way.

It didn't seem to be a problem as I could still use my computer normally but then when I tried to use the cmd as an admin, I was met with a message that said:

C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe

The executable program that this is configured to run in does not implement the service.

It seemed that everything that included admin permission wouldn't start, as I tried many other programs and functions.

So I tried looking online to see if there was any way that I could make the computer not start in safe mode, and I ended up trying to enter in the msconfig but I was met with the same error message.

Does someone know the solution to this problem? Sorry if it's something simple, I just never really used safe mode before so I don't really know how to work it.

Using Windows XP Home and trying to start in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key which brings me to a Boot Menu with no "Safe Mode" option listed. I can start in "Safe Mode" by going into the System Configuration Utility and selecting the BOOT.INI tab and putting a check mark at the /SAFEBOOT and then restarting my system, but I would prefer to tap a "F" key while restarting.

All the documents I read concerning starting in Safe Mode says to use the F8 key for Windows XP but it's not working on my system.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks ...

When trying to start XP Media Center 2005 in safe mode, it completes loading Mups.sys, the screen goes blank and flickers slightly like it's changing video modes, and i get a "BSOD"/blue screen (photo attached). The computer boots normally in XP when booted normally, and in Kubuntu 7.04/Feisty and Kubuntu 7.10/Gutsy when booted normally and in recovery mode. I suspect the problem may have to do with the failed install of the Netscape Activex Wrapper Plugin from buzzen.com which (supposedly) lets Gecko-based browsers run Activex scripts intended for IE7, but I'm not sure as I haven't used safe mode in some time. . I really don't want to have safe mode unavailable in case of a failure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Johnny

I'm getting an error when starting Microsoft Word and it's forcing to start in safe mode. I already deleted the normal.dot but it still the same. I'm not sure if winword.exe is corrupted so what I did was, I reinstall Microsoft Office 2003 and it's the same. Please help! Thanks

A:Microsoft Word is starting in safe mode

Try uninstalling Office, then deleting the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OfficeXX (where XX is most likely the number 11, but may also be 10.)

Then reinstall, and you should be OK.

Hey there.
I don't know what happened. One minute everything is all fine and dandy. The next I get flashing blue screen with scary warnings and 'crash debugging' countdown or count up! I started the computer in safe mode and deleted any software and anything I have been downloading recently. It still won't budge.
And I need the PC to start in normal because I can't function in Safe Mode with networking (many features are blocked), I mean, who can?

Please anyone help?

I was on my computer today (Win 7) and programs just started shutting down and the computer reset. The computer starts back up (Asus) and when it gets to the point where windows starts, the screen goes black and there is a blinking cursor line. Not buttons work at that point.

In my manual for the Asus and it says to select a boot device, press f8 when he Asus logo appears, to access Windows in Safe Mode press f8 after post. I start pressing f8 at all different times, but all I can get is the boot device menu or a blank screen.

I put in the WIN 7 disc and told it to do a startup repair - it says nothing is wrong. I try a system recover from a few days ago, and it has an error and can't do anything.

I was running Norton Virus and it didn't pick up anything before the crash, I also have Norton Ghost and I think I have a backup from a few days ago. But I can't seem to access anything.

I'm not too big of a computer nerd, so I'm out of ideas. Can I get any help?

Work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

But if you're running Norton crapware and the original corrupt factory preinstall then I'd skip to rescuiing my files and doing the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 following the best practices and using the tools and methods which get and maintain a perfect Win7 installation based on tens of thousands we've helped with here..

I spent all day on Saturday using my laptop with no issues, and shut it down as normal. On Sunday morning it would not startup in normal mode, and I can only get into it using safe mode.

It's been suggested it might be to do with the graphics card.

Any tips welcome. Thanks.

Problem
- Laptop will only boot in safe mode (and safe mode with networking [haven’t tried the other safe mode option])
- Reaches the "please wait" screen, then hangs

Things I’ve tried so far (not necessarily in this order)
- when on hung screen - ctrl+alt+del does nothing;
- system restore x 3 (going back up to a week);
- removed battery for approx 1 hr;
- tried to open Windows Update, but will not open in safe mode (seemingly) so can't check for recent updates;
- had not added/amended any progs (that I know of) the day before when everything was fine;
- virus check (Avast) finds nothing;
- in msconfig - "normal mode" is checked for startup, tried disabling all startup progs which made no difference (at one point it was checked as “selective startup” but changing to “normal” and rebooting didn’t help;
- also tried msconfig>services>uncheck “network location awareness”>reboot (this seems to make it worse - instead of the “please wait” screen, I get the same blue/green Vista screen but without the “please wait” loading thing.

Hello!
I have this laptop for a year now and it didnt make me much trouble. Some blue screens sometimes, without reason (in no case i did exactly the same thing like last time) and i thought it happens to all of us. Today i was playing League of Legends and it was running really slow, i had no lag though, the internet was doing fine (i was using Facebook and other sites). So i tried to restart it but after my desktop disappeared the screen was black and didnt restarted. So i unplugged it. After i turned it on again, after the "Starting Windows" screen, in the middle of the screed was the mouse, i heard the Windows log in sound but the users screen with password or finger print reader didnt appear and the mouse was alternating with that circle that appears when loading, sometime even the blue background in the users screen but just for a second. Those 2 were alternating continuously and i unplugged it again and now i am writing to you from safe mode. I will attach the debug file and i hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you for your help!

A:Windows not starting, in safe mode says its BSOD

The driver causing your BSOD is the Intel Wireless Driver. Uninstall it or upgrade it.

A:Windows Not Starting - Will Not Allow Start-up In Safe Mode Either

Two things to try: first, boot from the Windows XP cd, and once in Windows setup it will tell you to press f2 if you want to repair your XP installation using Recovery Console. do this. Once in RcoveryConsole, choose your windows installtion and type chkdsk. This will check your HD for errors. Ifit finds any, your HD is probably bad, and is causing the eroor you keep getting. If it does not find any errors, type in fixboot. This will fix the bootsector on your HD. After this completes, type fixmbr. This will fix the master boot record on your HD. Once your done with these things, restart and see if you can get into Windows. If you still cannot get into Windows, boot from the windows cd again, and this time instead of going into recovery console, elect to install windows XP. It will search your HD for previous installations, and when it finds it it will give you the option of doing a repair installation. Do this. What this does is reinstalls all the system files, but leaves all your programs and files intact. This will certainly fix the problem, if the previous method did not.

A couple of nights ago Windows requested to do some updates. It had 2/3 it automatically picked but I decided to look at the optional updates it recommended but didn't select. I went ahead and asked to install all of them. After restarting and rebooting computer since then my computer hangs/gets stuck on "Starting Windows". It's not a freeze I guess as the logo is still animated whilst booting but I've had it like that for 2 hours without success. I searched the issue up on google and it seems very common after windows updates (never happened to me before however) but every fix/solution suggested seem to vary drastically between HDD Fault/Motherboard dying/You downloaded something naughty etc, etc.

I can't make any progress on many of these "solutions" though. When pushing F8 upon boot and then selecting "Repair my computer" the screen will turn black and I will only be able to see a low quality cursor. The other route to many solutions was via safe mode but that doesn't load either anymore. I booted from safe mode successfully once, restored from a previous point on the 12th of February (maybe the last boot before the updates) and stupidly let windows shutdown and install the same updates again, I think. Since then it also gets stuck loading files.

Running Windows 7 Professional Edition

Any help is appreciated!

Hi there Dougy282,

Do you have your Windows OS CD by any chance? If so, I recommend performing a "REPAIR-INSTALL" and see if that resolves this. You would definitely need your legitimate copy of Windows OS CD though.

Hope everything works out well for you and feel free to ask more questions, thank you.
