Firmware Bricked Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock/Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2

Q: Firmware Bricked Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock/Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2

I used the Lenovo System Update (v5.07.0074) and was prompted to download and install (was listed as Critical Update) the Firmware to my Dock. As always, I closed all applications and sat as the Firmware downloaded. I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine. I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock. So, I unplugged it again. Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. I powered up my new X1 Yoga, and connected the cable. No power. This wasn't passing power at all. I confirmed the Intel Thunderbolt app was running, and confirmed that Windows was not even detecting the Dock. Lenovo is sending me a replacement. I had this one all of a week. Did I miss any other steps while I wait for it to be replaced? JIM

Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

I didn't realize it, but I purchased a thinkpad thunderbolt 3 workstation dock (170W) for my x1 yoga gen 4. Can someone tell me how I am supposed to connect them correctly, since the dock came with the dual cable. Or is this something that isn't compatible and needs to be exchanged? I hope not because it took forever for it to arrive. Thanks,Jesse

Hello All.  I am new here. My company replaced my W540 (Windows 7 OS) Thinkpad with a P52 (Windows 10 OS) Thinkpad.  I have an external DisplayPort monitor and extend the desktop to it.  I have a USB printer.  I use both wired Ethernet, and wifi.  I have a wireless Logitech mouse.  I also have a set of Altec speakers.  The P52 no longer uses the sit on type of Dock, so I bought a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W).  I set everything up, with the external monitor connected to the Thunderbolt 3, along with the Ethernet, printer, speakers, and Logitech Unifying transceiver.  With everything connected, the P52 connected to the monitor just fine, and I extended the Desktop to it.  The P52 could not see the printer, the Ethernet, or the Logitech Unifying transceiver.  If I move these items to direct connection on the P52, they are all found right away. Today, I downloaded the latest software and drivers for the Thunderbolt 3, and then installed them.  I have the same results for the four peripherals.  Am I missing something?  My Windows 10 OS is the Enterprise Edition, version 1803.  The Dock lets me connect the monitor and the power with one cable, but I still need to plug in and out the other four items if I use them. Help Please... Thanks,Bunsen1

Dear community, I am running a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock with my P72 and I am having a hard time to get some of my realtime USB devices to run properly: (1) 1080p Webcams: I tested 2 devices (Logitech C930e and Microsoft LifeCam Studio) and both provide an unstable video stream, which is regularly interrupted by distortions. A lower 720p stream with another device (Logitech C270) works fine, though. (2) Oculus Rift Headset and Oculus Sensor: Does not run at all or with bad tracking performance. Those devices require a stable USB 3.0 connection to function properly. All of those devices run perfectly when connected to my Thinkpad P72 diretly. So chances are, that the Dock is causing the problems, I have the Dock's latest drivers (v10011) and firmware (04-0E-83_Rev_0083) installed. Does the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock actually support fast USB connections (such as high definition Webcams)? Or is it rather likely that my Dock and/or the Thunderbolt cable are damaged?  I have been working on this issue for many hours now. So any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Robert

Hi, I'm using the new ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock which came out with the P52 with my P1. I received the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock back in October. In fact, I got two: one for the home office and one for the work office. It came in a small but heavy package (yes, it has two power adapters inside: a 65W and a 230W one). As mobile workstations have a power requirement that is more than 100W - P1/X1X requires 135W, the P52 170W and the P72 230W - a single TB3 cable cannot carry power to the notebook. Hence the special double cable that comes with the dock. I know I read a lot of arguments on which is better - the mechanical dock or the cable dock.    I have been using both docks daily since I got them, and I gathered my thoughts into two articles.   The review has my opinion about the dock and how it functions. You will also find more pictures about the dock and cable in this article. The troubleshooting article has some issues I bumped into and some solutions for them. One issue in particular mechanical dock fans will love :-) The cable can dislodge easily, and while the dock functions because there is a Thunderbolt 3 connection, the power connection gets terminated and the notebook will use battery power. Read more about in my troubleshooting article.

Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation DockEU/INA/VIE/ROKModel name: 40AN0230EULink (US version) I didn't find any decent pictures and or specs about this dock for the P series workstations, so here you are some pictures. It has a special combined cable, that allows to attach the powercable and the Thunderbolt cable in one. On the P1, P52, and P72, the sockets for the power adapter and the Thunderbolt are arranged the same way that the cable can plug in exactly. This is a simple and clever solution I think. The dock arrives with:230 W power adapter (which is for the P72 necessary, the P52 and P1 can use smaller ones), and I think is a simple pass-through from the dock to the laptop.65W power adapter - which is for powering the dock itself Downsides:The dock's cable is only 60 cm long, so there is not enough length to hide the dock (I think this is related to display data on Thunderbolt - can someone confirm?)And that the cable can be plugged in in one direction, so it will determine how the laptop and dock can be positioned relative to each otherConnections:USB: 5Thunderbolt: 2Audio: 1Network: 1Lock: 1List price is 392? in Belgium.

I am using a T480 with the TB3 dock and 2 external monitors. My problem is my screens go black for a couple of seconds every x amount of time. I've updatad all drivers found under the Display and Video graphics section Drivers T480I remember when updating to Intel Thunderbolt Software for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad T480, T480s, X1 Carbon Gen 6 - 1.41.565.0I received the following screen:(I did get 2 Thunderbolt SW apps in my start menu and uninstalled the one which was visible via add/remove programs) These updates did not resolve my monitor issue.I later on noticed there is a new TB3 Dock FWWhen I wanted to make the update I got the message the TB SW had to be above 17.4.77.400. (the version insalled and active was 1.41.565.0) I reinstalled TB SW 17.4.78.500 and performed the TB3 dock FW upgrade. Now I am in the situation I do not have a Thunderbolt SW application to allow/select TB devices to connect.V1.41.565.0 seems to be a new DCH driver. reverting back to the legacy driver 17.4.78.500 is not somethig I should have done.It seems the DCH driver came with it's own Thunderbolt SW application, which is no longer available. Is there a procedure to completly reinstall the DCH driver including the Thunderbold SW or revert back to the legacy driver with Thunderbold SW (which now states the application is not in use anymore) Thanks!

Why are keyboard/mouse/headphones not instantly working when switching on the dock? Is there a special setting necessary? Thx!

Hi guys, This morning System Update ran and installed a bunch of the newest March 2019 updates. The big one was the Intel Management Engine. After rebooting, when my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is plugged into my Lenovo P52 it freezes on the POST screen with the Lenovo logo. If i unplug the dock it boots fine, plug the dock in after the OS is booted, things work fine. Its just during the POST during secure boot. I tried reflashing the Thunderbolt firmware to the 11/2018 to no avail, reflashed the dock with version 3.x of the firmware (latest) no difference, downgraded the firmware on the dock, changed the boot support methods for thunderbolt, so on and so forth.  Its strange it doesn't get past the logo screen it just sits. Is there another version of the Thunderbolt firmware i should be using besides the November 2018? I really would not like to peel back all the different updates that it updatedAnybody got any ideas? Is there a way to find what the cause is? Honestly i can unplug the dock when i reboot and plug it back in within a second after the POST screen and things work as normal. Its just a pain.

We recently started using Bitlocker with a PIN at startup. On all our laptops using the "old"-type dock, that you click your laptop into everything is working fine, the users put the laptops into the dock, turn it on, type in the Bitlocker PIN using the external monitor and keyboard, and then processed into Windows. Our problem is with everyone using the new Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock. When the users connect the laptops to the dock using the cable and then power on from the dock, the laptop will power on (the LED in the ThinkPad logo lights up) but the monitors and keyboard connected to the dock is not working, and then after some time the laptop will power off again. We currently use a workaround where the users power on, type in the Bitlocker PIN and login to Windows before connecting the laptop to the dock, but this not a proper solution. We have Enabled both "Thunderbolt(TM) device" and "USB device" under "Support in Pre Boot Environment" in the "Thunderbolt 3"-menu in BIOS, but it still doesn't work. Have anyone else experienced this problem? Or does anyone know of a proper solution.

I've been running a Windows 10 T480 for a year now and have had quite a few problems with the TB3 docking station. My issue is going between my home setup (TB3 dock, single 4K monitor) and my office setup (TB3 dock, 3 FHD monitors - 2x display port and 1x VGA).  The only way I can move between the two environments is if I unplug the laptop from the dock, open the lid and then put the machine to sleep (note I'm not shutting down). To me this extra step should be unnecessary; however, I'm open to a techinical explination on why this is the only way to move between the two environments. The issue I have when I go from home to work is the montiors don't always come up in the correct spots and even playing with the display settings in Windows doesn't always get things back the way they were. Most of the time I need to unplug from the dock (with Windows booted) multiple times and everything comes back. This has really soured my user experience. I've tried using both the brick and cable version of the Thunderbolt 3 dock (that's what I'm using currently at the home and office) and the standard docks with mechanical slide/locking mechanisim and I'm having the same issue. I'm open to getting a 4K monitor for the office but that seems unnecessary. Lenovo technical support was quick to replace the motherboard (which they did last year) and that did not help. I'm looking for some sort of way to truly troubleshoot the software and/or have someone explain preciecely... Read more

The last most annoying problem is that there is no charging through the thunderbolt connector, the dock is in SELF POWER status. Screenshots attached.

Hello all,I bought a Yoga X1 2018 and during the shop they suggest the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Dock. Since I thought that having to disconnect only one cable when bringin the laptop from the desk to the meeting room would have been useful, I bought it.With my disappointment I setup everything and I did some tests on the laptop just to discover that the performance of the laptop when powered through the docking station are 1/3 with respect to when it's powered by the 65W power supply and 1/2 of when the laptop is on battery... (234pt vs 640pt vs 563pt | dock/65W/battery)Now since the docking station has a 135W power supply, I really can't think that this is an issue with the supply from the docking. Also since the laptop is even faster on battery I really don't understand how it could be related to the power supply... anyway I've connected both the 65W power supply and the docking and the performance are back to normal. Is there anyone who can suggest me what's going on or how to report this to Lenovo?

As the only docking solution available and moving from a more traditional dock, its less than suitable.  HP needs to make a longer cable and the end that connects to the laptop should be at a right angle.  The cable is so stiff and thick it takes nearly 4" to make the turn.  HP makes it impossible to find this out how long the cable is with out purchasing and at that point your stuck with it.  Hardly a customer satisfaction issue they should want to propigate!

Hi allWell we all now about the fan issue which is much better since the last BIOS update.Nevertheless I have sometimes fluctuation fan noise, although there is no load. This is mainly when the notebook is at the thunderbolt docking station.I found out, that as soon as I connect my notebook to the docking station more or less all app-processes suddenly move over and start running on the GPU. The CPU has virtually no load. Why do all processes start to run on GPU when the notebook is connected to the dock? Is this an issue or is there a good reason for this behaviour? My Notebook and Windos has the latest drivers/bios and updates installed.Regards,Sebastian

Is the new ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock compatible with P50? Dock details page (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/cz/en/solutions/acc100356) only list P51s, but not P50. But P50 claims support for Thunderbold 3. If yes,  can I connect Ethernet LAN over the dock? And what driver I need to install?

Hello, I have purchased this week the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation dock. It work well until today. Yesterday (Feb 1st) evening I ran the Lenovo Vantage update which updated a bunch of things. Interesting ones: Thunderbolt 3 Dock Firmware Utility and BIOS update.Everything seem to work fine. This morning, first issue: after docking the PC, the Ethernet controller from the Thunderbolt dock didn't seem active. Other attached devices (monitors, mouse) were OK. My reflex: "restart" the dock, i.e. disconnect/reconnect the power cables. And then the dock ceased to work. It looks like if it's "bricked". The power led is on, but pushing the button (or long press) doesn't do anything. Relating to the updates from yesterday, I'd say that it's somehow related to them. And/or maybe an issue with the Thunderbolt software/drivers on PC? I tryed to uninstall/reinstall the Thunderbolt software on the PC. I find curious that:immediately after install, "Attached Thunderbolt Devices" shows "Port 1", "Port 2". By install I mean I open Lenovo Vantage and do a "Check for updates". It doesn't tell me that it had installed something, but it triggers the download and install in the background. Also I see in Device Manager: Device Manager/System/Thunderbolt Controllerafter restart, the list is empty, and in Device Manager there is no more "Thunderbold Controller"  Have you got any hints? Thanks in advance,Cristian.
