Recover Deleted Partition (Windows 8)

Q: Recover Deleted Partition (Windows 8)

While trying to reinstall Windows 8 on a home PC we pulled the wrong hard drive and did a clean install on a drive that was being used to store a ton of files (videos, images, documents, etc) rather then a smaller drive that should have had the OS installed on it.

The original partition (on the storage drive) was deleted and then had 8 clean installed on it.

Is there any way to recover that deleted partition to get the files back?

Right now we're running a SuperScan with [email protected] Partition Recovery on the drive in question and it looks like it's going to take about 5 hours to complete. What's worrying us at the moment is the software is showing the deleted partition, and has folders from it in it, but there are no files. For example no videos or images yet.

I'm wondering if that just means the scan needs to complete or what. I don't know if anyone here has used [email protected] or has a better recommendation for partition recovery (if it's possible at this point) but the partition we're hoping to recover is listed as "Good".

Thanks in advance for any and all advice, if you need any more information, just let me know.

Preferred Solution: Recover Deleted Partition (Windows 8)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone,
I was trying to format my laptop and install a new version of Windows 8. I deleted my old Windows 8 partition and tried to install the new version, but I got an error about some GPT stuff.
I've looked for what it is and I found out that I could have just reinstalled Windows 8 using the Update and Recovery of Windows.
The problem is that I don't have the Windows 8 partition anymore. Is there a way to recover it now? Or do I have to install a new version of Windows 8?
In case, could you tell me how to go around the GPT problem?

My Laptop is a Lenovo Z580 and I haven't done anything after deleting the Windows 8 partition.

Thank you!

Boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI Boot Mode, so you can use GPT (GUID Partition Table).

Quote from this post: UEFI Boot Mode (installing using the GPT partition style) and Legacy BIOS Boot Mode (installing using the MBR partition style). -> link

   Tip
Error message when you boot from the Windows installation media in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode:

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style. (see screenshot below)

That is because Windows can only be installed to MBR disk in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode, but you plan to install Windows on a GPT disk.

- But if you want to use MBR (Master Boot Record) partition table, then delete all partitions on the disk.

Hi Guys,

I have two HDs, 80 Gig primary and 120 gig secondary. I had win xp installed and running off the 80 gig and I backed up all my files onto the 120 gig. I then decided to format the 80 gig drive

I used a win 98 boot disk and formatted the 80 gig hd. then I started the win xp cd and it asked which partition I would like to choose. I chose the partitioned 120 gig drive not realizing what I had done. I confirmed the partition removal and then realized what I did. So I start flipping out and I restart my comp

I looked for my files and 120 gig drive but it was gone. I'm really going crazy. So I researched a little and I have two utilities on disk (mbrwork and testdisk) I started to run mbrwork and it has been searching for recoverable partitions for the past 2 hours. I don't know what to do and I really need the files on the 120 gig HD. I didn't install windows and I haven't done anything other than run the utility. Can someone please help me. I don't know what I'll do if I can't get my files back.

Thanks
-Rob

A:recover deleted partition please HELP!

Rob, There are utilities that can rebuild a File Allocation Table. I have never used one but I understand that they work by installing the hosed drive as a slave to another bootable drive and running the software from the boot drive to fix the slave.

I can't tell you any names but a Google search should get you plenty of hits.

Good luck. There is hope.

>>I checked with one of my favorite software producers, Acronis, and found this. If it works like the other software I use from them, it'll be all you need.

Hi-

I accidentally started to install a new version of XP Home on an existing partition that had a good working XP home on it. I got to the point on the install where it highlighted the good partition and I hit "L" to erase it. At that point I stopped and tried a repair from the XP Home disk but no luck. Since it didn't overwrite it (probably just erased some pointers) is there any way to get back the good partition/OS that was on this disk?

Thanks

If you didn't create a new partition and installed files or a new OS over the space that was once the old partition, then there is a good chance you can recover.
Use the Free TestDisk program. I have had the best luck with GetDataBack. You will need another partition or drive of the same size or larger to restore your files to.

I just made a terrible mistake!

I've recently set up a desktop PC after 2 years without one.

Anyway, I've been backing up all my old 3.5 Inch HD's to newer and larger drives.

I just got finished moving a heap of files to a new drive, and when done, accidentally deleted the partition of the new drive and was just about to format it thinking it was the old empty drive when I realised what I had done...

So my question is, is it possible to recover a deleted partition? I'm guessing all the information is still on the drive as I haven't actually formatted it.

Any help would be much appreciated!

A:How can I recover an accidentally deleted HD partition?

Yes.

Undelete it.

Partition recovery function on any number of partition tools will do that.

Partition wizard free is popular.

Best done from a boot disc here: Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD.

Hi everyone,

First of all I apoligize if this the wrong section to post this and, im BEGGING you to please help me. As the title says, I lost my partition table.

I searched my issue on Google and it brought me here.

Here is my story:

1) I have a 1TB HDD with on partition.
2) I used the CLEAN command of DISKPART and accidentally deleted the partition.
3) After cleaning the disk I repartitioned it into two parts.
4) I formatted both parts using the quick format option.
5) I deleted the second partition created in step 4 and re partitioned it and formatted it using again the quick format option.
6) I realized about what I did and leave my disk to come here and look for some help before make a bigger mess, because I am afraid to execute any action without proper guidance.

But inbetween these steps I never wrote data into my disk.

I am really DESPERATE BECAUSE I have very valuable info. there.

If you can help me to recover my data I will be VERY VERY grateful to you.

Thanks for your time and answer guys.

Sincerely yours,

A:DISKPART, how do I recover a deleted partition?, PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello Sam, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I hope you have a backup of that deleted partition somewhere. Since you cleaned the disk, created new partitions, and formatted, the chances of recovering that deleted partition are very slim.

You might see if an option in the tutorial below may be able to recover it for you, but it doesn't sound promising.

Ok so I apologize in advance if this story is a bit long, and horrifying (actually it's probably entertaining xD). I purchased the Lenovo y510p gaming laptop on back on July 14th 2014. I got the laptop, and it just didn't work for me. It didn't play the games I wanted it to, it had overheating issues, the keyboard had a really sharp edge making typing uncomfortable as well. After installing Sony Vegas and Avast, and just shifting some of my personal photos/music over, I made a backup of the laptop using the OneKey Recovery software. This backup was made to one of my 500GB external hard drives. So I then decided that I just didn't like the laptop, and it was time to return it. I called Newegg, and got my RMA all ready to go. Because I had lot of my personal files and programs, I decided the fastest way to delete everything would be to use the OneKey Recovery by Lenovo, and do a factory reset. At the time, I didn't think anything of this then simply putting the laptop back to exactly how I got it. I even booted it up after the factory reset, and it looked just like the first day I got it. Fast forward 2 weeks, and my RMA is denied from Newegg:   Your RMA (RMA Number: 60470880) return was received and sent to our Inspections Department for closer examination. 34-313-740 NB LENOVO IDEAPAD Y510P 59406636 RTSystem has been modified/altered original manufacturers operating system has been removed cannot access restore partition, this voids Newegg w... A:How to recover deleted "Recovery Partition"

If you only used One Key Recovery by Lenovo, it should not delete the partition. (I hope you did not format the whole system) Once you receive the laptop, you can check if this partition still exists in Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Disk Management. It should show some drives, other than the C: , D: and the SSD (if you have). Those drives are the recovery partitions. I can post a sample screenshot in the evening. Sadly, I do not know any way to recover that partition. As I have seen on this forum several people who lost that partition could not roll back their laptop to original settings without a recovery drive (which is different from a recovery backup).

I have two hard disk in my computer, Disk0 (500gb) and Disk1 (150gb). Problem is with disk1. 1st it was being used for Windows 7 (EFI, one main primary partition and Windows hidden system partitions) then I formatted it as FAT32 and used for backup and data.

During Windows 8.1 installation, when I was erasing partition on Disk0, accidentally / mistakenly deleted all small partitions on Disk1, didn't touch the bigger main partition of 149gb where the data is stored, now the situation is that in Windows Storage Management it's showing that partition as healthy partition but not as FAT32 but as 'Other' and I can not assign drive latter to it as all options are grayed out.

Tried some data recovery tools, can recover data using some of them but it's messed up, no folder hierarchy, no proper file names, very difficult to sort out, would you please suggest any better option, any way to recover partition to working state, or any data recovery with proper folders hierarchy?

A:Recover deleted partition table

If a partition is deleted but not formatted then it can be recovered using Partition Wizard Partition Recovery Wizard - Video Help.

Try also using PW to assign a drive letter to the data partition. How to Change Letter with partition manager - Partition Wizard Video Help.

If that fails try using Diskpart to assign a drive letter from booted Win7 installer System Recovery Options Command Line: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...=ws.10%29.aspx

A failed partition which cannot be assigned a letter using steps above can sometimes have its table restored using DiskGenius trial.

Once you can assign a letter I'd back up your data which should have already been backed up if it has any value to it, then run Disk Check or Partition Wizard Check File System

Hi,
It has happened to me twice...I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?

Hi Guys

I'm running XP and Lubuntu on an old pc. I recently erased my Local Disk D, which had most of my personal data on it. Local Disk C is still there and contains the XP OS.

I'm not so bothered about losing the data that was in D (the really important stuff was backed up) but Disk D took up nearly 40GB of space which I am now unable to access or utilise.

The full story is long so rather than recite it here if anyone is able to try to help it would be better if I just supply information as and when you require it.

I should say that I'm very much an IT beginner; until this all started I hadn't even heard of partitions, and sadly I'm still struggling with them.

I deleted a partion using the windows 7 installer disk. Unfortunately I was a bit click happy and deleted my secondary drive (one partition if you call it that, as it took up the whole disk). This is my data drive. I keep everything there including a lot of very large, multimedia files that I cannot live without. After picking my heart back up out of my shoe I started asking for help and downloading as many free tools as I can. None of them have worked satisfactorily. Find and Mount looked extremely promising, saying it would find a mark on the HDD where a partition had been made previously and then allowing me to mount a read only version, then copying all the files as though the partition had never been damaged, if I wanted. Funnily enough not only did it fail to find a visable or lost partition on this drive, it even failed to find working partitions on any other drive. Pfft.I've tried Paragon Partition Manager. It told me my drive had errors and to run chkdsk. I did this but it didn't help. The programme had the same errors when I tested it on another drive. Another pfft.I tried EASEUS Partition Manager. It found the files... but it copied all 253 gb of them as 'raw' files or something like that. This means they were completely out of order, no folders and renamed 'file001.jpg' etc. This is useless for me as a lot of my files are .RARs that need to be in a sequence to option or similar issues and also with over 25000 files I cannot be arsed o... from the last unencrypted part by using Getdataback SW but with no luck in my Bitlocker encrypted partitions. I would appreciate any advice to restore the bitlockerencrypted partitions as I have the password and recovery keys to decrypt and retrieve my data

Hello, I need help with recovering a file. When I signed into my Onedrive account, Windows Defender caught a virus. Therefore I quarantined it and deleted it. As I have a current investigation going about a few of my accounts (including Onedrive) being hacked, and being close to being able to prove who did this, I now realize that I should not have deleted the virus, as this is evidence that this hacker is also trying to access my other devices through a virus placed in my Onedrive account. Is there a way that I can determine what the name of this virus was, or to be able to find it again? AVG detected it instantly as well, but I ignored it in AVG and deleted it from Windows Defender. I do not see it anywhere in AVG or in Windows Defender anymore, and it is also not present in the event viewer under Windows Defender. Any help on this topic is appreciated. Thank you.

Windows Defender — where are the Scan Results?

Obviously, you are able to see when it last ran by opening Windows Defender and looking at the last scan details on the bottom left. If it detected something, it would alert you and also log it in the 'History' section.
If you want to see more detailed logs, you can view them in Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Windows Defender > Operational
It will show as 'information' for when it has ran, etc. If it has detected malware, etc. it will show as 'Warning' with a yellow warning sign and details of process, severity, etc. If it's stopped before completion it will also show under a yellow warning sign.

No. Rollback doesn't affect personal files. In fact to do a rollback would make chances of recovering files worse as you would be writing more to the disk.

If you don't have backup and can't recover them they are lost unfortunately.

I'm not sure why, but it seems that my deleted files do not go to recycle bin. I have checked and they are not there. I tried to download Recuva, but they ask me to pay before I can download anything. So I gave up. In the end I followed this tutorial which
is sent to me by a friend:
recover deleted files from windows 8

It helped me recover about 80% of my photos, but the other 20% are lost.

This morning my computer notified me that it had to reboot to install updates. (This was a routine Windows Update notification, nothing suspicious about it.) When the reboot finished, all of my hard disk's partitions except drive C were gone. In their place was a single unallocated space. This took out all of my data files and most of my applications' profiles.

I can restore most of this data, but the process will be time consuming and incomplete. Before I do it, is there any hope of recovering the partitions that Windows Update blew away?

A:Any way to recover partitions deleted by Windows Update gone bad?

Yes.

But I'm not qualified to do it.

Jumanji is the guy who needs to help you. He's a member.

In the meantime---DON'T attempt to recover individual files. You first need to concentrate on recovering the partition proper. If you can recover it, the files will likely be unchanged.

I am pulling my hair out. I thought the transfer completed to my external hard drive so I deleted my photos and emptied my recycle bin. I have been attempting system restores (unsuccessful) and file recovery software all day long. It seems like it is doing nothing but giving me a couple pictures along with porn. I am so frustrated. There has to be a legitimate way to recover my entire Picture folder? Please help! Thank you!

So, my problem started earlier this week when I tried to scan my Hard Drive using my antivirus system. Never do that.
My Vaoi laptop froze at 27% during the scan, and I had to manually shut it off (hold down the power button) and then restart it. Well, it started the scan again, and got stuck again, so I had to restart it again. The next time, I was able to read this millisecond long message about how to "cancel dskchk by pressing any key", so I did, but then it just took forever to load and opened on an error message saying that windows couldn't load, or something along those lines.

Eventually, after figuring out how to open safe mode, I tried to use a Restore point (which didn't work), Refresh the System (which couldn't complete), do a lot of maintenance scans (none of which helped), consult the internet off of my friend's computer (where I heard about the windows.old folder), and then I was finally forced to use the Vaio Recovery Tool and do an emergency backup onto my new External Hard Drive... It semi-worked, but a lot of my files weren't passed over to the external drive, and I'd like to get them back.

The files I care about are mostly image and document files (jpg, bmp, Word, and Notepad) and the folders they were in were all on my Desktop, but I don't know how to get them back. Some are there, some aren't, it's all just really confusing. So, now, I'm currently running three different Data Recovery programs ... Read more

A:How can I recover lost/deleted files after a Windows 8 reset?

Thanks for the alert about the dup. thread. I closed it.

When you don't have a backup I don't know what can be done except for trying recovery software, as you have, or if the data has suddenly become very important there are companies who can, at least sometimes, succeed where free software fails.

Hello Steve, welcome to Seven Forums.

I would try reinstalling, just in case you did not actually remove the pst file.

The partition where I install programs, and keep the drivers seems to be gone.

Here are some of the pics I took to help you understand my problem.

I tried Partition Wizard, then it couldn't find my 300 Gb partition.

I know, I should have taken the picture after the full scan recovery partition was done. But it still couldn't find that partition. So I was already too frustrated to do it

I'm very new to Windows 7, so I don't how my 1 Tb HDD has 3 partitions(200 Mb, 300+ Gb, and 600+ Gb).

How this all happen, and what I've been doing?? well..

- last week my PC started failing to boot Win 7
- I could access Safe Mode though
- then on the next day, somehow it could go back to Win 7 like normal

- after using it for several minutes, it just stopped working. I couldn't even move my mouse pointer. so I pressed reset button

- then it started failing to boot my Windows again
- this time I couldn't even access Safe Mode
- it would load some drivers, then it'd reseted itself

- since that day I've been researching(found this pretty awesome site)...and figuring out how to restore my PC to how it was.

- I've gone to several places to get system repair disc
- I've been trying to fix it via system repair disc's automatic repair thingy...for many times
- I've been attempting to fully search my HDD for the lost partition, with Partition Wizard

- I've been trying to find the lost partition with Power Data Recovery (free ver.)....
- but ... Read more

I have my netbook dual-boot WinXP and Windows 7. (I used EasyBCD for the dual-boot setup.)

In booting into Win7, I used to have the option of the "repair your computer", which brought one several useful tools, if there is problem booting.

Of course, the exact same tools are on the Win7 setup DVD, which I have. However, with a netbook, I don't always have the USB DVD drive with me, or the DVD, and that recovery stuff boots up much faster from the HDD partition, than from the DVD. So I think it is good to have. (Not at all like the notebook manufacturers recovery partitions. I wouldn't want to use those at all, wiping out all my data.)

Recently I upgraded to a larger HDD. I used Acronis to clone my old HDD (at that time in the notebook) to the new HDD (attached via USB enclosure). (It was an older Acronis version, long predating Win7. I don't know if I would have had better results with a new version.)

Well, at first I could not boot at all, with the new HDD installed. I was able to fix that though. (I forget the details of it at the moment.)

Also, my drive letters (I have four partitions-drives) were messed up, so somehow the Acronis cloning did not keep that information, and I had to fix that in both XP and 7, with Disk Management.

For the most part though, my partitions were all intact in the new drive. Being a larger HDD, I increased the size of a couple, in the Acronis interface.

I realize now though, that I do not have the recovery boot-up option any mor... Read more

A:Recover Windows 7 Recovery Partition?

Please post back a screenshot of your maximized full Disk Management drive map with listings, using Snipping Tool in Start Menu. Screen Shots

If you cloned the HD over then the Recovery Partition should be intact, although whether it will still run from the hotkey at boot is questionable. What is your make and model so we can advise you on trying to boot Recovery?

If Repair console is on the HD it is the 100mb System Reserved partition placing it on the F8 Advanced Boot tools menu. What options do you have on that menu now? Does Repair load if there?

Since you have the DVD to use the preferred method of reinstall, you probably don't really need the Recovery Partition anyway, so may want to recover its space if it doesn't cue up to run from boot. You can always order Recovery Disks from your tech support if you didn't make them when Recovery was still working from All Programs.

Hey guys, I've tried searching a lot about this topic but couldn't find an answer or maybe it was too complicated for me. So basically i 'm trying to restore my windows 7 home premium to factory settings. I don't have a backup CD and I can't find my product key which is supposed to be in an sticker at the back of my laptop. Well there is a sticker but its been two years and the sticker has been washed out(sort of) and I can't properly see the product key now.

My HP G62 notebook PC has 3 partitions. Drive C is where all of my data is stored, Drive D is named recovery, which I guess is a manufacturer's recovery partition. It occupies about 11 GB of memory. The third partition has nothing. I was thinking I could restore my laptop to factory settings using this manufacturer's recovery partition but a Microsoft support guy told me I'll need the product key and a windows 7 disc for this to work.

So what do I do now? How do I get my product key? I tried contacting HP to see if they could help me with the product key thing but since I don't live in the US, they keep transferring the line from one department to another. I'm so disappointed with their so called support.

So could you guys please tell me what shall I do now?

A:Need to recover my windows 7 using manufacturer's recovery partition

Offhand, I think the MS support guy is wrong.

I've never had a PC with a recovery partition, but my understanding is that they will restore without any Windows 7 disc or Product Key.

Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

You'd need the Product Key from the sticker if you were going to do a clean install, but you aren't.

I think the recovery partition will self-activate.

I don't think recovery partitions are foolproof, so you may have issues of some kind. But generally they work OK.

You must back up any personal data or it will be lost.

Hi

Is it possible and how it works to recover Win7 100MB System Reserved partition, deleted by mistake?

A:Recover windows 7 100MB System Reserved partition

Make sure the partition is formatted primary and set active. All other partitions not active.
Make a system repair CD (or download an ISO) from someone's PC. It is in the Backup & Restore screen.
Run the Startup Repair 3 separate times. This should rebuild your system reserved.

So the other day I decided that I wanted to try dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl Entertainment Notebook that already had Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installed. I shrank the main (biggest) partition by 100Gigs and then installed Ubuntu 10.04 on that 100Gigs of unallocated space. All worked fine, except when I tried to boot Windows 7 from the grub menu, it would come up to the beginning Windows 7 animation and then it would crash. So, I downloaded a Windows 7 Recovery CD and tried a few of the tools there. I did not create a system recover image prior to my troubles, so I could not recover the easy way.

After that, I tried the Startup Repair tool, which did not work. I read somewhere to try that Startup Repair tool 2 or 3 times, which I did. The third time, it seemed to freeze; it was "working" for about 6 hours, at which point I decided that it was enough and shut down the PC. That was a mistake... From that point forward, I still could not boot into Windows, but also every time I tried to boot into Ubuntu, I had to perform a disk check, which always failed! After trying that a few times, I had had enough yet again and decided to just reinstall Ubuntu. The install seemed to work fine, but once I rebooted I could not boot into Ubuntu (or Windows 7). No matter what option I select from the grub menu (or if I push F11 to go into recovery partition), it gives me an error that says "Error: No such partition" and dumps me into a grub rescu...
