I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

First, thanks for the brainpower that is on display in you helping folks to fix their computers. I have tried to follow some of the posts to determine what is going wrong with my system. Mine seems complicated. I would just format and start over but my system files are on the same hard drive that seems infected. Need a clean install if it can't be fixed.

Symptoms: After a thumbdrive infection this spring I've tried to moderate the ghosts that seem to have taken over my system. The system will continue to blip the internet connection and awaken itself even if I manually put it to sleep. The only files that are identified as infected are user cache files. Sometimes a run of both Comodo system cleaner and CCleaner will get the system to 'relax' but not always. Two times I have gotten to a system lockdown that has required a previous system restore. It restores my system and connection but continues to blip the internet through my modem router.

This is a desk top system that has a connection through century link (formerly qwest) with a netgear dgnd 3300 modem router. The first "canary in the mine shaft" was when the wireless network was randomly renamed and my individual passwords were reset (have never left the defaults on the modem router). Since that time my network sharing center has renamed my connection "network 3" (I have reset a new router accnt name and password). I power off the router every night. It's happened one time since,... Read more

I keep having Thumb.db's appear in almost every folder i have that has any information. These cannot be opened with any usually program and come out as random scribbles in notepad and Microsoft word. And when i delete them, they come back in about 2 seconds. What are these doing and how do i get rid of them?

I ran searches in Spybot, Ad-Aware, Microsoft Anitspyware, and e-Trust, they detcted some spyware like Winfixer but that was deleted. I also had AVG but i deleted it because i thought it might have been the cause of the problem. AFter those i got HiJack This and it came out with this log:

A:I keep having Thumb.db's appear

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted.

Thumbs.db is not something to worry about. It's a hidden file generated by the Windows operating system. Since it is "hidden," not everyone sees it (even though it exists) unless they have chose to "Show hidden files." It is a database file containing the small images displayed when you view a folder in "thumbnail" view (as opposed to tile, icon, list, or detail view).

If you want to turn OFF this feature, here's how:

1. Open up the Control Panel
2. Select Folder Options
3. Click the View tab (see picture below)
4. Check "Do not cache thumbnails"
5. Click the OK button

Please re-install AVG onto your machine. In this day & age, surfing the internet without the protection of an antivirus program is like begging for a bullet.

When you eject the USB flash drive do you click the Safely Remove Icon before pulling it out? If you don't, it will have a hard time connecting next time you put it in.
If the USB Flash Drive is not recognized when you put it in, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any devices with a Yellow Flag or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers is there an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it, then remove the Flash Drive and restart your computer. Put the Flash drive into a different USB port. If you don't want to restart, put the USB into a different USB port and in the Device Manager, Right click Any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes. You should get New Hardware Found.

Somehow only one of my thumb drives has been assigned to a port/hub which is usb 1.1. I would like to get it unassigned from port 1/hub 6 and let it find an USB 2.0 port/hub.

There are no warnings in device manager and the thumb drive always works, just slower than before.

I have re-formatted the drive, uninstalled the drive but each time Win7 finds it, it reassigns it to port1/hub 6. I have even uninstalled the hub.

I do have a drive letter assigned to thumb drive. Nothing else uses that drive letter.

I repeat that other thumbs behave properly. (IE use usb 2 ).

Any suggestions

HELP!!! I just bought a new PNY 8gb thumb drive for my Dell E6400 laptop running XP. It worked great for the first few tries. Today, every time I plug it in the USB port I keep getting "Cannot find HOnEq.Exe"
I don't know why it's not auto-playing, and allowing me to read the files I put on the thumb drive earlier. But, I can go to My Computer, and right click on the thumbdrive to view the contents. But why did it stop automatically recognize the thumbdrive and why is that warning constantly popping up. There is no virus..I scanned that. All devices appear to be working. Should I return the thumb drive and get a different brand/model? Or is there a simple fix? Also, I checked to update the driver but it said I already had the latest driver. Did something get corrupted? HELP!!!

A:PNY 8gb Thumb Drive

The most likely situation is that the thumb drive got a virus which was later removed by your antivirus or someone else's. In that case there will still be a file (probably a hidden and system file) called "Autorun.inf". If you delete that file the drive will be back to normal.

In case you don't know, to show hidden and system files go to tools>Folder options>view, check show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide protected Opperating system files.

I'd try copying the files it won't play over to the local drive. Then you can find out if it is a problem with your drive, files, or if you are just using to much RAM on other things- netbooks typically can't run tons of apps at once since they usually only come with 1-2GB

I have several USB2 thumb drives all purchased in recent months.
All FAT 32

#1 has a defunct ISO file on it (copied from a download)
#2 has mixed media (mostly TXT files

I was about to recycle #1 by reformatting it, when I noticed Allocation Unit size:= 16 kilobytes
But #2 has Allocation Unit size:= 4096 bytes

I have never reformatted either #1 nor #2 ... so it leaves me perplexed
Two other thumb-drives purchased at the same time are also 4096 bytes

How might #1 have been changed from default 4096 bytes (4KB) to 16 KB by merely copying the ISO over. ?

What do range of various capacities represent in Formatting drives ?
What would be the best Allocation size be for mixed file types ? (txt, pdf, xls, doc, dll, exe, ini, mp3 ... etc)

Hi,

Is it possible to install XP on a USB thumb drive so I can carry my XP with me where ever I go?

Thanks in advance.

A:Installing XP on a USB Thumb drive

I'm afraid windows is not installable to such a drive. Even if it was it would be a blatant violation of the EULA, as it states the software can be installed only on one machine. What you might need is a live CD such as can be found with some of the linux live systems. But then you would have to learn how to drive or ride a bike all over again . Meaning you would find Linux to be a little different from what you're accustomed to. But if you're looking to have a portable system that leaves no traces of your browsing or personal information when you leave, Linux might be the answer.
edit: forgot to mention some of those Linux distributions have been successfully put onto a thumb drive, as you asked.

What do I really have and what can I accomplish with it. Is it something that I should keep?

It's 2.4 GB of something. I know I created it back when I had a different computer with W7 but I don't remember why or what I intended to use it for.

I guess an even more pressing question would be: "Should I do the same thing now that I am on a different computer"?

I deleted the files in the "E" Drive and now when I go back to my pictures most of them will not display the image. I looked through other sites and heard similar problems, but most were trying to figure out how to get rid of the Thumbs.db file. To my undersatnding windows xp automatically reproduces this file after you delete it. Well that doesnt seem to me happening for my machine (Dell Demension 2400) Pentium 4. I think I have about 50 folders and aprox 20 of them still show pictures and have the Thumb.db file. As I went through each folder that didnt display pictures I deleted the thumbs.db file. Closed explore and reopened and the pictures still could not be shown. Any help here would be much appreciated. Thanks, C Reynolds

A:Thumb.db file does not return

Have you tried refreshing the folder? Right click in the folder and then click 'Refresh' in the context menu.

I have an H4 series Lenovo desktop. I cannot figure out any way to get it to boot from a flashdrive. I appears to be set up to go to a CD first but I can't find a way to add USB thumb drive before the OS in the boot sequence. Anybody know how?

Hello Jim,

You might see if the tutorial below may be able to help you boot from a USB flash drive.

I have a 8GB thumb drive, age unknown.
[1] In WinExp, Name:= Removable Disk
[2] In drive Properties, Name:= <empty, no name, an empty string>

When I try to rename the drive "PKT2012" in either [1] or [2] the new name refuses to "stick"

The "Properties" dialog "Name" field is always empty.

Is the drive past its useful life or am I missing something when trying to rename it ?

In drive > Properties > Hardware ... the list of drives is by manufacturer branding/model .... all rather useless when trying to identify the target drive. I have 5 drives.

In drive > Properties > Details (tab) > Property List ... there is a plethora of property-names in random order ... not much help there either that I can see.
"Device Description" := Disk drive
"Display Name" = Disk Drives

AS I experiment with property names the drop down list reorganizes itself with the last selected property at the bottom of the list ... not a lot of help, when the property names are a moving target.

I am trying to clean out a collection of USB thumb drives (ancient and recent) without discarding maybe valuable data (from a time when I thought thumb drives were the way to go).
Now I use one external USB spinner backed up regularly onto another spinner.
All thumb-drives <8gb (nominal) are being tossed out.

I am sure the thumb drives are breeding!

I would appreciate any help ... thenk you

Is there a way to stick the installation files for 2 Windows 7 versions (in my case, x64 and x86) on 1 thumb drive, and make it bootable? Preferably, I would like to be able to select which OS setup to boot from.

If this is not possible, is there a way to combine the files somehow, so when I get to the install screen, I can choose which version/edition to install?

A:creating a 2 OS thumb drive

Yes, you need to use imagex to include the editions you want into a single install.wim.

Replace the normal install.wim with that.

Then put on a thumb drive the normal way.

I have a problem with my xp 64 bit; when i plug in a thumb drive the computer recognizes it installs it but then no actual drive registers in the my computer folder so i cannot do anything with the thumb drive. It was working and now it is not, it is not the type or model, i have tried many types and i have tried system restore so now what i would like to try every possible aspect before doing a fresh install of windows. Does anyone know how to get these drives to register. PLEASE HELP

A:Thumb Drive Not Working

See if you can assign it a drive letter.

Right-click My Computer and select Manage.

Click Disk Management on the left, and it should show in the right pane. If so, right-click on it and assign a letter.

If it doesn't show, something is wrong with it.

You can get a user manual here:http://www.thumbdrive.com/downloads.php#ManualsSome of these drives come with logon software and some do not.You need to determine what is on your drive before formating it.

I have an Attache' 2 GB thumb drive that works fine in 3 other computers. When I plug it into mine, I can't see the files that are on it. I can see the drive in My Computer. I also cannot put anything on the drive. When I try to I get an error:

ERROR COPYING FILE OR FOLDER
Cannot copy (filename): Cannot find the specified file.
Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.

I know the filename is correct as I am dragging and dropping it into the thumb drive. I had this problem once before but don't remember how I fixed it. I'm sure it was some setting on this computer that was wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yea, Windows XP Pro OS.

A:Thumb Drive Won't Work

You could try saving all the files onto one of the computers where the drive does work properly. Then reformat the USB drive to FAT32. Copy the files back again and test it on the problem PC.

If this doesn't work try uninstalling all the USB drivers. XP will reinstall them on the next restart.

Control Panel > double-click System > Hardware tab > Device Manager button
Click the plus sign to the left of the entry Universal Serial Bus controllers. For each of the entries listed there right-click on the entry and select Uninstall. When all have been removed restart your PC and retest the flash drive.

Hi,

I thought it was just a matter of changing the settings in Windows Explorer, but I was wrong !

One easy way to see thumbnaiils, if it is any help, is the Irfanview Thumbnail viewer - very effective.  www.irfanview.com

Because I know the thumb drive has been removed, when I try the only option left "Format", it comes up with "no disk in drive"

I am out of ideas, help please.
