COA product key and installed product key discrepancy

Q: COA product key and installed product key discrepancy

On a recently purchased, from a supplier believed to be reputable, refurbished 64 bit, Win 7-Pro, computer, the product key shown on the affixed COA and the product key retrieved with Magical Jelly Bean are different. In various places I have searched, I think I have learned that this often happens when big refurbishers use special OEM product keys when they refurbish PCs and install newer operating system software. Is this information still correct?

What happens if I choose to replace the existing HD in the PC after a HD failure or if I want a larger HD in the PC? Will the product key on the affixed COA work?

Should I, for the moment, 1) attempt to reactivate the OS with the product key on the affixed COA; 2) do nothing; 3) or something else?

Thank you, in advance, for comments, suggestions, or pointers to an appropriate tutorial.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Not positive, but I think so.

The Product Key on the COA should work regardless of what hard drive you use.

Should I, for the moment, 1) attempt to reactivate the OS with the product key on the affixed COA; 2) do nothing; 3) or something else?

Do nothing if Windows is currently activated and all is working well. If you ever have to re-install Windows, re-activate it using the Product Key on the COA sticker.

Has Microsoft changed something in the latest April Windows Updates?
I create a default Windows 8 Enterprise VL image on my laptop in audit mode as I have always done previously.  Nothing has changed from my side.
When I install the image via WDS, everything installs fine.
When I use my WIM file to install via USB, it now comes up with:
The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key.
right after selecting the install language.
I have checked EI.cfg and it is normal:
[EditionID]
Enterprise
[Channel]
Volume
[VL]
1
I then tried adding PID.TXT with my Enterprise KMS key and, rather than error it then prompts me for a product key.
Surely using the VL install media it should never ask for a product key.  It never has before. (And I've never had to before)
I prepped the image as normal using:
C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:C:\Windows\win8unattend.xml
Any ideas?  I can't but help thinking something has changed in the latest batch of Windows Updates.  It's quite frustrating as not all my machines are capable of PXE, so I have to use USB.
The reason I think it is a recent change, is if I do a default install and DO NOT do any Windows Updates, it all works fine.  Only when I install the latest WU does it start doing this.

A:[NEW] The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key.

OK, So I've fixed it now, but I will still like to know WHY this has changed.

If i do this to my WIM, it then installs from USB:

imagex /flags "Enterprise" /info c:\temp\WIM\ME\install.wim "Win8Office2013Enterprise-x86" "Win8Office2013Enterprise-x86"

I wonder because I use the WDS capture image if this has somehow changed recently.
Very annoying, but now at least I can install my custom image :)

I picked up this lenovo laptop and shortly after I got it the HDD went out. I replaced the HDD and Installed a full version of Windows XP SP2 then used the Win 7 upgrade disc I bought. I did a clean install of the Win 7 then I activated it at that time without any issues. Some time after that I started getting the message it wasn't a genuine copy. I rearmed the time period but I'm not able to activate the copy again with the PID. I get the message this product is for upgrade and not a clean install. I need to find out if I will be able to register this copy or if I will need to start over from scratch. I did try putting in another PID but it didn't activate with it. I haven't been able to change the PID back due to the message I am getting about the upgrade not clean install.

I appreciate any help I can get with this issue.

I recently purchased a Precision M6800 (probably one of the last ) and now want to add an external slice-type battery. I did some searches on DELL web sites (my local Belgium one and some international ones) and on the www. This resulted in several product codes for what seem to be the same, or at least similar products: 451-11831 / 451-BBGJ / 312-1351. Can anyone tell me if those are all the same, or at least compatible products ? And more importantly: is any of those (or all 3) really the slice-type battery I am looking for to attach to the docking connector of my M6800 ?

So short story, I work at a college tech site that fixes student and faculty computers. A foreign exchange student from Japan with a Sony Vaio (most likely from Japan as well) managed to get a virus on his computer and he was blocked off our network. Our policy is that we wipe and reinstall the OS to ensure that the virus is gone. However, we didn't have any Windows 7 Home Prem media CDs so I downloaded a Win7 Home Prem 32bit iso off of MSDN and burnt it to disk. However, when entering the product key given on the bottom of the laptop(and I've checked 3 times now to make sure it's correct), I get a:

"Product key does not match the current Windows SKU" error.

Why is this happening? Do I need a certain burnt iso (from Sony in Japan?) because of the laptop's foreign origins or is something else causing the problem here?

A:Product Key Does Not Match Current Windows SKU (Foreign product key?)

Yes, you need a Japanese iso, they have regional editions.

Hi! Ich bought a HP ProBook 6550b a few days back. On the first start of the notebook I got the following message:Product Information not validThe following product information programmed into the system board is missing or invalidProduct Configuration ID I already updated to the latest Bios version, but this did not solve the problem. I searched Google and Youtube and found a tool (NbDmiFit ) that HP provides. Unfortunately I think, that the tool does not support my motherboard. I tried the batchfile "NbDmiFit.bat", which should find the correct exe-File for setting the missing value, but that didn't work. After that I tried every single exe-file, but I was not able to set the Product Configuration ID successful. Does anyone know, which exe-file or which tool one needs for setting the Product Configuration ID on a HP ProBook 6550b? I also discovered a further possible solution with WinFlash. The Windows product key on the bottom side of your notebook is an OEM license key. That means this can?t be used with other Windows versions.

The product key is encrypted in the Registry, so maybe one of those commands/utilities has the wrong encryption algorithm.

If you bought new the key on the sticker on the laptop is your personal unique key and the one in the system is the OEM's "volume license" key.

I have been reading posts on seven-/eight-/tenforums for years with pleasure and gratitude for all the solutions they provided. But my current issue is one of the strangest things I've encountered in all these years. Have been searching through a lot of posts but haven't found any similar issue (or solution for it) yet. So here it goes.

Symptom: the OEM product key in the registry of a Windows 7 Pro installation (laptop) does not correspond with the OEM product key in the laptop's BIOS.

Here's the situation in short. It concerns a laptop from a student friend of mine who asked me to upgrade her current Windows 7 Pro x64 OS to Windows 10. She couldn't tell me if the installation was the original OEM factory partition or if it (perhaps) could be a pirated version. Since I wasn't about to just upgrade to Windows 10 without checking the authenticity of the Windows 7 OS, I performed the regular checks: see if it was activated already by running the "Activate Windows" program (check), check under Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> System tab if the OS was already activated (check) and run Microsoft's online Validation Tool (check). Everything seems fine, the OS is activated and genuine.

Still, the COA sticker was missing. My friend didn't have any physical recovery media or other stuff with a license sticker on it. So I thought I'd check the product key stored in the BIOS and compare it with the product key in the registry. If they'd correspond, all would... Read more

A:Product Key Installed but not Genuine?

First thing first, did you re-install OS before? Re-format? If you did, you haven't activate the Windows yet. If you have the Product Key it should be no problem. You can activate it yourself. The product key is usually located somewhere below your laptop or maybe someplace else, unless your Windows is not pre-installed. But if you did re-install Windows and it's different from your previous version (ex. Vista to 7) the product key probably won't work. Either way you still can try to activate it.
Follow this step. Click on Start Icon on your task-bar, on the search box type "activat..." and it should show the results. Click on the windows activation and follow the instruction. You can either choose online activation or by phone (I usually activate by phone). If you choose by phone, just follow the instruction there and on that screen of yours, there should be a 54 numbers with 9 sets of it (6 numbers for each set). You'll be asked to key in that number to retrieve your activation code. Oh, by the way, you'll be talking to a auto-operator on the phone for the whole activation process unless you wish to speak to a real person (which is unnecessary except when your activation code is not working).

A friend had a disk with windows 7 home premium (that's what i also had) but after the installation i realised he had a 64 bit version so i got on the internet and downloaded a windows 7 home premium 32 bit. But now i need to enter the product key and now i get the message that it's invalid (or something like that). Does anyone know what the problem is?

A:Product key doesn't work on new installed windows 7

336780,
It will not work if you installed Windows 7 from a download and used a different key code for it. You can click the link below to purchase a Windows restore disk.

I will not question whether this is legal or illegal. This comes from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q328874

For non-corporate users there is this from my own experience: I have on occasion run into three or four customers who attempted what is known as casual piracy by installing his XP onto a second machine. I have had to get only one customer out of this mess (about two years ago or longer) but the workaround was easy. (By the time his grace period was up, he had installed many programs and didn't want to be forced to do it again.) We called Microsoft, gave them a credit card number and they worked us through some steps that fixed the problem.

We then rebooted and was asked for a valid key.

I do not remember the steps as it was quite some time back and I saw no reason to keep notes on it.

Microsoft asked no questions about why he attempted piracy. I think they are just happy to get the money.

Just discovered that the Win 7 Professional Retail Version I purchased, downloaded & installed has a bogus product key. I've since ordered a genuine Win 7 copy. When it arrives, can I just enter the new product key into the existing system without reinstalling Win 7 again, following the "change product key" instructions? If not, is there a way to do this without a reinstall?
THANKS.....Lee

Hello Lee,

As long as you purchased a retail Windows 7 Pro, then yes you should be able to just change the key to the new one to activate with it.

Hi,

I recently wiped the HD and re-installed the OS on a 3-year-old Asus N53Jf notebook. It came with Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed.

There were no system disks but it had a System Recovery partition. I had made a set of system recovery DVDs as they recommended but when running them on the newly reformatted computer, disk 4 of 5 was corrupted and I couldn't use that method. (Yes, the HD recovery partition was wiped since I thought I was covered by the DVDs.)

So I downloaded an iso for Win7 HP 64-bit from Microsoft site and installed from a bootable USB.

The Product Key was rejected (Error Code 0xC004E003) and when I phoned Microsoft they said the key was "blocked" and I had to contact Asus.

Asus support is unbelievably bad. I tried contacting them through several channels and they won't address my issue.

The Product Key was never used on any other system except the laptop.

Would really appreciate any advice? The MGADIAG output is below.

Thanks.

I have an MCSA, MCP, etc... but got out of Network Management World in 2004, so I'm a little "rusty" in the Tech world now.  That being stated...
I just purchased a new PC from a PC manufacturer.  I will call them...Well, Inc.  I found and purchased one with a Windows 7 Professional 64 bit Operating System installed.  When I opened the box, I found that the Certificate of Authenticity
/ Product Key label is NOT on the CPU anywhere.  The COA/Product Key is NOT on the Restore and Recovery CD, either.  Which brings me to two questions:
1. Is it NOT a legal requirement for Dell to install a COA/Product Key on the outside of the box for Windows 7 Professional (or at least on their "Recovery CD"?
2. If I find myself having to reinstall the Operating System (i.e., hard drive failure, motherboard failure, super-bad virus), won't I need the Windows 7 Professional Product Key to reinstall the OS and validate as genuine?
From experience, getting help from Well, Inc. is like pulling teeth with a pair of tweezers with blinders on.  It will take several thousand e-mails and several months for them to correct what I see as a problem.  Based on that fact, it might be
easier to ship the unit back and request another one... one that has a COA/Product Key label attached to the box, or at least on the "Recovery/Restore CD."  Am I missing something here?  Can you elaborate/educate this "rusty" ... Read more

We use the information provided by the Security Update Guide API to do automated patch auditing & reporting for windows machines - we fetch a list of missing security updates (by KB-Number) from our machines and map it with the info from the CVRF file
provided by the API to derive which vulnerabilites and more specific which CVEs are relevant in turn.
To do this with a high precision, we need to evaluate which CVEs are relevant for the given products installed on the machine to be audited. In the CVRF-File, every vulerability (CVE) has a list of "Known Affected" products. These products are
identified by Product IDs which are mapped to Product Names in the ProductTree.
Now our problem: We have not yet found a way how the extract a list of installed Product IDs or even Product Names from a machine to be audited. But we need this list to match it with the Known Affected Products in the CVRF file.
Is there a way to solve this? How can we get a list of installed Product IDs from a running windows machine that can be extracted as some kind of text file for offline processing?

Title basically says it all.

I need a tool(or maybe script) to be able to check license keys of Windows OS and Office in a local network. Thanks to user Kazun on this forum, I found a Powershell script for checking the license key of the OS on a local machine, but I would prefer instead
of remote connection/physical interaction to be able to operate from within the one machine. Is it possible?
Thank you for your time.

I wanna dual boot Windows 8 Consumer Preview with my existing OS, Windows 7 Home Premium. I have created the necessary partitions and also created the bootable pendrive from the ISO downloaded.

When I begin the installation, everything goes fine until the Product Key screen comes up. I have tried 'NF32V-Q9P3W-7DR7Y-JGWRW-JFCK8' and 'DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J' but I get an error message saying 'We couldn't verify the product key. Check the installation media'
When I enter a random product key like '00000-00000-00000-00000-00000' it gives a message saying that the product key is wrong, but when I enter the correct product key I get the error message which I have put in bold statements above.

What shall I do? Please help.

I have a toshbiba Satellite L750-1XK and managed to get a Windows 7 Installation Install Disc as the owner of the laptop did not make a recovery disk. The owner reported that the laptop would not startup and when i looked at it the hard disk had stopped
spinning.
I brought and fitted the new disk drive and booted up from the CD and installed windows 7 64bit software. All went well untill i entered the product code from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop and was informed that the product key was invalid. The
operating system has installed and is running ok BUT the network controller has not installed and as such I cant get the laptop on to the internet to get any further.
I did try to get a disk from toshiba but there web site says that windows 7 is not supported so i cant get one from there.
Why does the product key come up as invalid?

I bought my Acer Aspire notebook with Win8 & a touchscreen new in Jan.2013. I have never been able to activate the product key, (it is being blocked). I have since found out that the number I located in the BIOS is a 'default' product key & is plastered all over the internet & certainly doesn't appear to be my unique personal number. Why would it be a default number, & why is it on my laptop? When I first rec'd it, it wouldn't complete installation of Windows 8. It was picked up & sent to Acer, Plymouth for checking. This is what they did:
Passed Hitachi hard drive test, memtest & all other hardware tests. Re-imaged hard-drive & performed software recovery. Updated BIOS.
When I got it back everything was working ok, except for the product key activation. I've been using it ever since Jan.
with only other problem. Could something they did in Plymouth be the cause of this problem?
Acer has sent me Windows Recovery disks to do a factory reset, but I've already done a factory reset for another problem & that didn't activate the machine, so why should another reset fix it?

Hi, I'm new.

Right now, I'm really worried. I just bought Windows 7 Ultimate from Ebay, installed it and everything works fine. I tried the Product Key that came with it, but it said on the computer that it was blocked. That's ok, since it said on the page that it wouldn't work.

So I went to a website called Windows 7 Key Sale,Cheap Windows 7 Serial Key,Windows 7 Product Key Store!. as it was the first thing in google. I bought the Windows 7 product key, and I should get it soon.#

Bad Move.

I didn't realise I had service pack 1... it came with the Discs... FML.

Is there any way I can delete service pack 1 before the disk gets here so it will actually work? Thanks so much if you can help.

Microsoft has said that these keys won't work with SP1 windows.

A:Windows 7 Product Key, and SP1 Product Key.

A product key number will activate the Windows 7 with or without SP1 installed.

However, that 2nd site is a pretty questionable website, and would have my suspicions if that product key number was legit or not as well.

Getting your Windows 7 from places like these is quite risky. They have a high risk of being fake, illegal, and loaded with a virus to top it off. It's always best to get your copy of Windows 7 from a more legit retailer, or directly from Microsoft.

I purchased a copy of Windows 7 from eBay and it came with a Product Key label. The disk doesn't say that it is the Service Pack 1 level, so I assume that it is the original version. I decided to bypass all of the updating that would be required to bring the original version up to the SP1 level by just downloading an ISO of Windows 7 SP1 from the Microsoft web site. Part of the process for doing this is to enter the Product Key so that Microsoft can verify that the key is valid. I entered the key and clicked VERIFY. I got a message that this key was not valid for this product. The FAQ stated that the key would not be valid for an OEM, Enterprise, etc. version of the program. This leads me to ask two questions:

1) If I have a valid Product Key for Windows 7 64-bit, why would it not be valid for the SP1 version; it's just the latest version of the original OS?

2) If I go ahead and install the original version of the OS from the disk that I have, will I be able to receive the SP1 update when I have installed all updates up to that point? (Or is SP1 just a compilation of the original OS and all of the updates that were issued before MS released SP1?)

Thanks in advance.

A:Product Key Not Valid for This Product

These are questions/situations for a Microsoft rep, IMO.  Nothing anyone can tell you here at BC...is likely to be as valid as a simple phone conversation with an authorized rep of MS, charged with doing license activation..

A simple phone call would result in answers within a 15-minute block of time, IMO.

1) network monitor 3.4
2)Lync network monitor parser

Installtion got completed successfully but when I try to start capture I get this error everytime.......

"None of the network adapters are bound to the Netmon driver. If you have just installed, you may need to log out and log back in order to obtain the proper rights to capture. Please refer to the product help for more information"

I read many technet articles and other blogs but that didn't solve this issue. I tried things like

A) Run as administrator
B) nmconfig /install in cmd

So could you please help me how I can fix this issue?

Is the product key directly related to the install disk? That is, can I install Windows 7 on a computer and use a different product key than the disk I'm using to install, assuming this different product key is unregistered?

Or in another light: If I install using a registered copy but enter my legal copy's product key, is this a valid installation? Can this even be done?

A:Product Keys: install from different disk then product key disk

There is no product key information on the installation disks.

If the version of Windows you install is the same as the product key you intend to use, it will be fine.
