I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey community. I was hoping for some clarification. I am use to working with VMWare ESXi VSphere for hypervisors. So I have been labbing for my MCSA and I notice alot of the context of MCSA material describes installing an instance of Windows Server 2016,
and then turning that into a Hyper-V Server. What I did was I installed Hyper-V Server 2016 on my ProLiant. Is there any reason why I would not want to do this ? I had to reference alot of white papers, manuals, eventually blogs, and I think a youtube video
or two before I could manage it from my remote PC. It involved adding the target computer via power shell, customizing the hosts file, adding the server within the PC's computer configuration I forget what exactly. I also had to disable the firewall on the
Hyper-V Server 2016 before the Hyper-V Server 2016 hosted on the ProLiant started appearing in my Hyper-V Manager from my Windows 10 Pro machine.

However I was listening to this gentleman's youtube video.
and he explains that Hyper-V Server is meant to be installed as a bare metal Hypervisor which is what I did do but because i was accustomed to working with VMWare SAN's that are the same way where you install the Hypervisor on the host machine and start
spinning up virtual machines. However I noticed i got some updates on the Hyper-V-Server 2016 the other day and not all of them wanted to install ... I believe some of the updates were for Windows so it went int... Read more

I have been using WHS for the past week or so, and I really love its potential. The problem I'm having with it at the moment is that certain computers' backups seem to fail inexplicably, and so far I haven't been able to figure out why. If I can, I'd love to stay with WHS.

If I can't get WHS to work reliably, then I'm looking for a good alternative backup solution for my ~10 Windows computers. Here's what I would like:

* Management from one central location. I love how I can install the Windows Home Server Console on each client computer, and then I can manage all of the backups from one place. It's much easier than running around to each computer to configure the backups.

* Single-instance storage or deduplication. A huge potential HDD space saver, when you have a lot of wasted space with two computers backing up the exact same file.

* Bare-metal restore. Again, I love how WHS makes it easy to restore using a boot CD and a network connection. That way, in the event of a client hard drive dying, I just pop a new drive into the computer, reload the image, and we're back to normal without having to worry about reinstalling Windows, software, drivers, et cetera.

* Price! WHS is a steal at roughly $100 with support for up to 10 computers. Seems many client-server backup programs can easily cost $400 or $500, and that's a little steep for me at the moment.

I would prefer to run Windows on the server, but if the best solution ... Read more

Hi, I recently tried turning the family computer into a dedicated counter-strike: source server. However, when I host a server other people are unable to connect to it. When I use the same computer that's hosting it and connect to the ip address everything seems to be fine. After looking on-line it seemed that I had to open up specific ports on my router. So following what it said, I opened up port 27015 (starting port: 27015 ending port: 27015) for the ip address that I am using for the server. The same thing still happens. In the directions it said that I should open the port for both udp and tcp however there were no options for that. Also it said that I should use a static ip address. When I do that I am strangley unable to search the internet but am able to play counter-strike fine. Why is that, is it because if I choose a static ip address I have to enable all the ports for internet explorer ect. manually? I've tried hosting the server with a static ip address and without and nothing seems to work. I am assuming that there are still some options on my router that I need to change, any help would be much appriciated. My router model is a wgr614 netgear router. I would probably just go into my router settings and play around with them till it worked, but my mom is paranoid and I have to know exactly what I am doing before I even attempt it. It took me like 2 weeks just to convince heer to let me change the settings at all.

Thanks in advance!!!

This article talks about Refresh, Reset, and Bare-metal recovery... What exactly is this bare-metal recovery? How do I access it?

A:What is bare-metal recovery

Bare Metal means a clean hard drive, like it comes out of the box. The entire installation is redone, just as it is if you recover a System Image Backup.

Im looking for some advise. I work for a small company that runs SBS2008 as a server for user authentication and file shares and that is it.

I preformed a backup of the entire system to allow for a bare metal recovery in the case the server crash and burned. I was trying to test the recovery by restoring to a VirtualBox VM. Obviously the hardware is different, and after the restore, the VM continued to Blue Screen and reboot. So Im asking for advice on how I can test the backup, or ways to test recovery so I know if our server does die I can be back up in a short about of time.

Purchasing third party software is out of the question here. I know all about explaining to the powers that be, that the cost of being down for a length of time is far greater than the cost of a third party software to allow backup and recovery to different hardware. Still being approved to purchase software is denied.

So I am left with the tools at hand, The SBS2008 Disk, The Backup Made from inside SBS2008, and any free tools on the net. Can someone help me work through this so I can be sure I can recover my data? Putting files back where they were is easy enough for me, but Im talking about restoring all the users profiles, Active Directory, Group Policy, etc. If I cannot restore this to different hardware ( and this might be the case if the server hardware dies and wee need a new server) than I need to be able to reload all our settings. Help with this would be greatly appreciated. Th... Read more

A:SBS2008 Bare Metal Recovery

I would suggest have a spare set of identical replacement hard disk/ disks to hand & try the recovery to them.

That will at least prove the recovery system you have will work when needed. That is provided the recovery/ backup does not die with the system disk &/ or partition you are saving to! OK?

I am running Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 Enterprise. I migrated my laptop's Windows 7 OS to VM and was able to boot to it in Hyper-V. I cloned my laptop first then sysprepped it with an unattend script and a batch file. The unattend install works
and the batch file runs during Windows setup on my bare metal laptop. When I do the same in Hyper-V, the batch file never runs.

Here's the process I took to migrate my laptop to VM and what I did to get it to run in Hyper-V to see if something along the way I messed something up:
-Used dism to capture the image.
-Applied the image to a vhdx.
-Attach the vhdx in Disk Management.
-Copied my unattend.bat, unattend.xml, and setup.bat scripts to the C: drive of the vhdx.
-Loaded the SYSTEM HIVE from the vhdx in Regedit.
-Changed the "Start" DWORD from 3 to 0 in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/test/ControlSet001/services/atapi", "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/test/ControlSet001/services/intelide", and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/test/ControlSet001/services/msahci"
-Unloaded the SYSTEM HIVE and detached the vhdx.
-Used Hyper-V to create a Generation 1 VM. Used the vhdx as the disk.
-Booted the machine up with error, but got rid of it by running a repair on Windows.

Here are the scripts that I am running during sysprep:

In another thread about why Windows 10 is free, I started journalling my installation, largely to answer Drew's claim that Win10 installation was easy.  It is not, and it is not even done yet.  But to say more than I did there, would hijack that thread's theme, so am starting a new one here, where other installation horror reports are located.  In this case, the problem is different from the others, so if I interpret the rules rightly, I should start a new thread, not post to a dissimilar one.
Problem:  Windows keeps reinstalling itself over and over.  Each time more files were copied, so it wasn't actually doing the same install over and over, but might have been interactive, reboot, interactive again.  But there is NOTHING in the screens you see, to let you know this.  They all read the same, they all begin with 'Install Windows 10', each time you must select the language then agree to the EULA, and everything afterwards is exactly the same in the progress screen, and when it finishes, it says it has to reboot 'to continue'.  Continue what?  Well, the first seven times I left the installer stick in, and at the 8th time I decided to take it out at the next 'Install Windows' purple screen (after reboot).  And, I hit the Red X to close the installation.
Next I booted it without the stick, and all went as recorded in that top link of this post.  Since it wouldn't allow me to input my name and the other data, I... Read more

A:Loopy Windows 10 Preview installation (bare metal)

Post-reset, it goes into a loop again for me to either Install or repair windows, just like the other 8 time.  So this time I went to advanced options, and selected the one which repairs why Windows won't boot.  For I never actually got into Windows, it wouldn't let me create the first user account (wouldn't let me type in the data).  I suspect this is because I turned off all the data-sharing options listed in the 1st post's top link.  But of course, nothing in the prompts or 'reactions' say that's why.
Aha, now it says 'Startup Repair couldn't repair' the PC.  Going down the rabbit hole again...

For a little while now, I have been working on scripting programs. I joined this forum with a question about a partition program I was working on. Then I added windows setup, added WIM Boot, and added windows features to it, all while using WinPE..

Then I started using WinRE instead of WinPE.. What I have figured out is that I can use WinRE to partition my hard drive,
install a clean version of windows, install system drivers and write a recovery image partition.. Within a short period of time..

I would like to share my project with all of you.. It works very much in line with Bare Metal Reset Recovery Media.. I just scripted a few programs to help create that media, with a little help from Microsoft TechNet and this forum..

Your Questions, Comments or Suggestions are Welcome..

Hi, I built a new PC running 8.1, GPT, UEFI secure boot mode, everything. I'm now at the point where I'm ready to start migrating my data to it, but before I do that, I need to get some backup software that offers me the option to boot from a recovery CD and restore from an image file backup stored elsewhere. Until I've wiped this install & restored successfully, I don't consider it a usable machine. I already have this setup working on my Win7, but for some reason that software is not working with 8.1.

So I'm looking around for something new, and I'm on a trial of Paragon Backup and Recovery Home 12. It says I can create a WinPE disk (and I must use this, since I'm using Intel firmware-based RAID) that will allow me to do a bare-metal restore. The help takes me to a link on their website for something called the "Paragon Boot Media Builder." And there's documentation on it, but I can't find out how to download it. If I Google downloading that, a bunch of pirate websites show up & not much else.

Is their help & website outdated, is there another of their products that I must buy to get this?? Very unclear.

Or does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm not really not interested in purchasing anything until I've verified it is solid & will work in the manner I described above. I don't trust untested backups.

I am looking for a Win 7 backup and restore program that can do the ff.

1. Do an image backup which can be used for a recovery (in case the system won't load or some program won't run) or a bare-metal install (if the HD has to be replaced or reformatted);

2. Do a scheduled incremental file backup based on what was added or changed since the image backup or the previous incremental backup; in addition to the bare-metal install from the image backup, all incremental file backups can be restored, bringing the system back to the state from the last incremental backup;

3. If the backup disk is filled to a certain percentage (say, 80 pct), then the image backup is deleted and a new one is made. If the new image backup is successful, then all incremental backups are deleted. New incremental backups will be based on the new image backup.

4. One also has the option to schedule both the image backup (e.g., every month, every six months, every year, etc.) and the incremental backups (e.g., daily, weekly, etc.).

A free program that can use a network drive as a backup is preferable.

Hi All,

The story so far:
2008 server was hit by rootkit virus. Machine was taken to doctor for data recovery. (Raid 5 data set, we had low % hope of recovery) New hardware and Server 2012 replaced old server.

So far, so good.

Now we want to use the old machine as a workstation.
Raid 5 was reformatted as Raid 0. Two volumes on 4 disks.
When we go to boot from a Win 7 Ultimate x64 DVD, we get the "reboot and select proper etc.."

I seems that the IDE DVD drive is not being identified at boot. I have tried the predictable changes to boot order, but have not disconnected anything. We did try attaching a SATA DVD drive, but that was also not identified during the boot sequence.

I don't know that the Rootkit didn't affect the bios...not educated enough to know if that is possible.
At this point this has become a 'hobby level' problem, but I still want to find resolution.

Asus P5Q Turbo, 4 Seagate drives on Raid 0, IDE dvd drive, 3" IDE floppy (unplugged, either/or with DVD drive)

And there I am....

A:Bare metal install 'reboot and select proper boot device...'

Why are you using dated RAID technology, which Win7 doesn't like and we see nothing be problems with? It confers no performance advantage and if you lose one drive you almost always lose all the data. So the only time it makes any sense is if working with huge files like full length movie editing and there are now drives big enough to handle those too.

Hello all, my request is this:
When I play games, for example let's say, Warcraft3/Diablo 2, and when I try to create games, people cannot join them. However, when I try to join other people's games, it works fine and I'm able to connect. Yesterday my friend came over my house with his laptop, and we were going to play come WC3, but before doing that he had to find an internet connection to use.
I have a DLink-524 wireless router that I use primarily to go online on my PSP. My friend tried to search for my internet connection and found it, but when he tried to use it, it said the connection failed, when it works 100% fine for my and his PSP. Can someone please help me make it so that people can connect to my server when i host games/servers?

Now, I called D-Link just now, and they told me I have to call Microsoft(what does Microsoft have to do with this?) to see which ports I need to open so that my internet connection or something can be shared, and other people can connect to me. I called Microsoft and they were of no help. I'm wondering, what do I do from here? I tried setting my internet connection from PPPoE to Dynamic/Static but something didnt work out right or maybe I didn't do something right. I'm in need of some serious help here. Thanks a lot for reading my issue.

Bit of history first. I had a nice little pc that I'd run half-life servers off of, but after about 5 mins of playing with 5-6 others ont he server I'd get a blue screen, error code 0x0000009F.

Then a year or so later I started upgrading bits and pieces, until I had an entirely new pc. The only thing that hadn't changed was my 550W BFG PSU, my 250gb Maxtor HD and my keyboard and mouse, which are those microsoft reclusa and habu.

Went to go play half-life with my friends the other day and about 5 minutes in the blue screen appears and kills the game. Everything works fine when I'm not hosting the server, and I know I could just get someone else to host it but it bugs me why this error happens. Has anyone had any experience with this? Cheers.

Hi everyone,

I was recently hired at a company that has outsourced all of their technology to outside companies. They want to consolidate their email to have an inner office server but keep the web server run by an outside company.

I'm not sure how this can be done as I have never hosted email etc, but have a good understanding of how the internet and computers actually work.

Is this possible and how can it be done.

To the best of my knowledge, the outside company has several servers and hosts many
websites/emails. We have a single server, essentially just a shared hard-dive, running XP server 2003.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

A:Hosting separete web and email servers

Yes it can be done. Set up an email server in the flavor of your choice and point your MX record to the mail server IP address or your WAN interface natt'd to your server IP address. You need to do some research as to what hardware and OS your mail server will run on and spec out a server based on that and future growth. If you have never managed or set up a mail server before you may want to outsource the setup and get some training on how to manage it.

One of my servers has been under almost relentless SSH attack today. I run a script that blocks the attacking IP after 6 failed login attempts, but the attempts just keep on coming.

I routinely do a reverse lookup on the attacker to see where it comes from, and today we have been attacked repeatedly from multiple IPs that trace back to:

OrgName: Everyones Internet
Address: 390 Benmar
Address: Suite 200
City: Houston
StateProv: TX
PostalCode: 77060
Country: US

I sent an email to their abuse department, and have received an auto-response from [email protected]

This must mean that theplanet.com owns Everyones Internet.

Now, an SSH attack from a hosting service pretty much has to mean that the hosting service's servers are cracked. I am getting hit from different IPs on different Class A networks, and at certain times the attacks are coming fast from multiple IPs.

Anyone who hosts through theplanet.com, or through Everyones Internet or who is considering hosting through these organizations should be aware that their servers are cracked.

For the record, and to make sure the documentation trail is complete, here is the relevant data from auth.log on the system that is under attack (again note that we block the IP at the firewall after the 6th attempt):

Yeah, well...alright.

Too bad that the email that I sent them had ALL that information in it. Of course, my logs had their local time in them, which is Mountain Standard Time (and I did specify that), but I didn't specify it relative to GMT. With daylight savings time, it is GMT -7 I believe, but if theplanet.com was interested in solving the problem, they would have had no trouble sorting that out.

They aren't interested. They're rogues.

Three PCs in my environment, all running Windows XP Professional SP3, are infected with a virus or combination of virii. Most notably, they are running rogue DHCP servers which point DNS to on clients which pick up an IP address from these DHCP servers. The infected PCs themselves have DNS statically set to I have run rkill and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Trend Micro Officescan against them but this has not solved the issue. It doesn't seem to be correctly detecting and removing the infection.

Please advise what is needed.

Hello. I am a 24 year old from Romania, currently a student in IT school. Despite my age, I don't have a job yet for several reasons... primarily anxiety disorders and most tasks being more than I can handle. I've still been looking to earn money from my limited computer skills for a while. A few weeks ago I thought about something that I could do easily: Running a server farm for any service which pays for such. I heard of super-computing in the past, and even ran a voluntary server. I know about such servers being used in research, render farms, and I assume the practice exists for other tasks too such as large scale code compilers.
In essence, this is what I'm looking for: I register an username on the website of the service and add my Paypal or bank account to it. I then download their application, configure it to login to my user, then leave it running in the background. The program can use the machine to process and upload data. Based on the work it did in a day / week / month, the service adds the amount of money it sees fit to my account. Sadly I don't suspect anything this simple exists yet, but it's what I'm generally hoping for. There are only a few things I care about specifically:
- I don't want a gun pointed to my head about the server's uptime. 99% of the time it would be up 24/7, but there are cases of power or internet failures and I might not immediately detect if the machine or program freezes. In essence: If it goes down for a week, don't pay... Read more

A:Earning money by hosting data processing servers

I looked more into this and asked in several places. For anyone interested in the same thing, I thought I'd post an update. Also wanted to ask one more thing after that.
It seems that super computing and renting processing power isn't as common as I thought, and there aren't any reliable ways of doing this. I did however find two similar approaches, although in my case neither work:
The first and most common is bitcoin mining. I initially had some hopes with that, but sadly it's not a task for the average user. Mining takes a huge amount of processing power, and requires special hardware to work at expected performance. Even if you get said hardware, it consumes so much electricity that it outweighs your power bill. Still glad I learned about bitcoin during this search however... it's a really amazing idea and I hope it will go far.
The second option is a system that's being developed precisely for this purpose, called Digital Generation ( http://www.digitalgenaretion.tk/ ). Their idea is exactly what I was looking for. Unless it's a complete scam (which I doubt) it might be the first service which pays internet users for renting resources. The reason it doesn't help me is that it doesn't seem to have a Linux version and doesn't support PayPal yet. When both issues are fixed I'll try it out.
As for the question I mentioned: Considering I could handle the obligation of permanent uptime, and would buy a hard drive about 2TB. What services can I run a server for to get money? We... Read more

Hi. I have a wireless belkin router which my xbox uses to obtain a wireless signal. I have altered the DMZ settings and enabled UPnP so I have open Nat. Unfortunately in CoD5 and 4 I am getting a connection interrupted sign 2-3 times a game. Each of these lasts for about 3-5 seconds. But on games without a dedicated server instead of connection interrupted I get booted from the match. As you can imagine this is very frustrating and completely ruins some games for me.

If it matters I believe the internet is run to my wireless router and then to my modem and into my main computer. two other computers and my xbox are connected wirelessly to my router.

It is also not a problem of IP's changing because I have the settings on my router to were it "leases" a IP to a certain Mac adress indefinetly.

Also I tried port forwarding and my games still got connection interupted.

I believe I have done all I can with the router so It might be my firewall. I use Kapernsky security instead of windows firewall.

Please help!

So I've been hosting various servers for my guild over the past year & a half, I've hosted servers for the following games Minecraft, Terraria, Cubeworld, Killing Floor, DayZ & now Starbound. Everything has been working fine up until about a week ago or so, one of my friends has suddenly started having issues connecting to any of my servers. Here's the deal.

He can't connect to my server, but he can connect to every other server that he tries, it's only my server. Everyone else who has been connecting fine the past year is still able to connect to my server perfectly fine (myself included) & has no issue playing with eachother. Why is he the exception? Why can't he connect to my server, but can connect to other servers & has been able to connect in the past?

I'm completely lost as to why he can't connect to any of my servers, but has no issues connecting to other servers. We've been trying to figure this out since last-night, but have gotten no-where. Anyone know what could have caused this? Did his ISP suddenly decide my server was bad & is blocking his connection or something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Hosting multiple game servers for my guild, why can only ONE person not connect?

He's trying to access your server over the internet? Using a URL or an IP address? If a URL is it resolving to the correct address? If an IP is it (still) correct?

Hey guys, I've been asked to get a "ballpark" figure for my company as to a network attached storage system in the 100 Terabyte range. They always call me their "tech support" but I've never handled something as massive as this. I've looked at some Dell and Cisco systems but I'm really confused as to how this "blade" system works.

I'm used to plugging in an external harddrive and it pops up in my windows explorer. Is this what I can expect from a system of this size?

I'm expecting prices around $20-$30k is this accurate?

Also is this something a "mildly" computer competent person could put together? Or would this require the skills of a real IT guru?

A:Ballpark figure for 100TB NAS?

For a NAS system in the 100 TB range it depends on how you are planning on dividing it up. Like if you are wanting like different portions for different departments, a RAID type system would probably work just as well, as each RAID drive could be for a different department. However if your wanting a 100TB NAS in one system, setting it up is actually quite simple. (RAID systems can be difficult) It is similar to plugging in an external HDD, but instead of plugging it in with a physical cord, it is more of a virtual cable you use, but it would still show up in windows explorer, once its setup. Once its plugged in and setup on the work network all you would have to do is remotely connect to it and set up the various folders, etc. that your company needs. Once that's setup, its easy to connect to. And yes, a ''mildly'' computer competent person could manage it easily.

As for price, it depends greatly on who you buy the system from, and what discounts (if any) you get due to it being a corporate purchase.

If you find out what type of system your company is purchasing, id be glad to walk you through setting it up.

First I'm going to suggest that if you're serious about running a clan you become serious about CS:S. But it is just a game

To the point, use the resources at your disposal. Your first guide should be the www.steampowered.com boards. Therein lies a nice stickied thread for all to view and digest about setting up a dedicated server, as well as other great stuff. Good luck.

Okay, im just wondering, when i start up my hlds i goto console and i see
couldn't exec listip.cfg
couldn't exec banned.cfg
Connection to Steam servers successful.
No auth servers parsed
Disabling Valve Authentication.
Adding master server
Adding master server

Is this good or bad?
if it's bad, how could i fix it?

A:Dedicated Server Help

its probably just that you dont have those .cfg's because you havent banned anyone yet. when you ban someone from your server, their username and/or ip is written to one of those .cfg files which is executed everytime the server is set up so everyone you banned is still banned.

if you still need help with your server, i think you'll find a lot more help here at the official steam dedicated server forums:

read some of the "Read First!" to see if you can get any help from there.
