I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It's taking over a minute for a file to open or for the box to appear after I right click. It just hangs with the hourglass cursor until it finally responds. I know this isn't normal. So what's causing it?

Hello: (New to this or any forum for that matter)
Trying to get a cursor in this text box took 5 seconds. Hitting refresh in Gmail or any buttons within gmail or on-line apps takes the same amount of time. Just days ago all was fine - I downloaded some code (w/o properly using common sense - logic analysis code - technical - usually OK) and since that occurred having "response to mouse action" problems (just button clicks and text entry getting a cursor). Have also lost scroll capability in one application - not sure its related but suspicious. Scroll works fine in other apps like Visio.
Have run antivirus software (AVG & Bit defender and Microsoft Security Essentials has been ON all the time). Was thinking of running "combo box" repair utility from this site - but thought best to get advice first and that was also what was recommended.
Suggestions? Thnx in advance for your help.
Mod Edit:  Do NOT run ComboFix without proper instruction by MRL personnel - Hamluis.

A:Buttons, text boxes slow to respond (Gmail / Chrome including this web site)

Seems to be OK now.
Removed Chrome - re-installed - worried I would lose my mail - did not  -->> No change
Read some more - came across a forum discussing changing windows performance - played with  that no difference although one person states it resolved this issue.
Came across this web site:http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/179159-troubleshoot-application-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html.
Played with MSCONFIG as suggested - however it locked up my machine -on reboot (windows was busy trying to stop apps during log off) - waited 1/2 Hour - removed the battery - rebooted came up with all the start-up items disabled, (which I believe I had disabled as suggested).
Opened chrome the problem was GONE. I was about to cut disabling the start apps in half to narrow down on the problem - but instead turned them all back to Normal - using Normal.
Returned Windows to Normal state using MSCONFIG - rebooted. and Voila (GOT LUCKY) - chrome and all other boxes including this one work 100% as before.
So what changed - beats me? But I am thrilled that my machine is back. I am running chrome Beta version now as suggested by one forum (problem remained it was the MSCONFIG selective - no start-up rtns / reboot / back to normal approach that seemed to have resolved the issue)
We'll see for how long this will stay the way it is now - if it comes back - I'll be back.
Anyway Thnx for letting me spell th... Read more

Hi all. An easy one hopefully. W2K Pro SP4 850, 20gig HD, 384 RAM. I reformatted about a month ago & things have been sweet. I went to black vipers site & did all the tweaks he recommends. Now I have a problem with the time it takes for the context menu to appear after right clicking on an app or on *My computer*. Sometimes it can take 30 seconds for it to appear. Once it has, the next time I want it, it is fine, but only for the same app. If I right click on a different app, it's just as slow as B4. Is there something that I have changed in services that affects this?
Also, I have noticed that after I first boot up, B4 I go online, if I right click an app I get a pop up saying I am working offline, retry?/cancel. This happens mostly when I right click on my *C* drive.
Thanx for your help.

If you have Norton Antivirus software, the problem may be solved by unchecking "Check for publisher's certificate revocation". This is located under Internet Options --> Advanced (tab) --> Security (heading). This worked for me when I was having serious hang time when right clicking to add new folders.

Hello -
Sister in law's laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro about 1.5 years old. Was originally running Windows Vista. About 6 months ago she had someone uninstall Windows Vista and install Windows XP instead, and it worked fine. About 1 month ago, she turned on the laptop, and the mouse buttons and keyboard were completely unresponsive (the touch pad did work, meaning cursor can be moved but nothing can be clicked), preventing her from taking any action (even from running a virus scan).

I've booted the machine up and used F2 and F8 to enter the different safe operating modes. I was able to boot it up in an error checking mode, where it boots up with limited functionality, and there the mouse buttons and the keyboard worked, and I was able to copy all important files to an external drive.

I read numerous similar problems on this forum and on others, but never saw a real solution. The only actual solution a came across for the same problem was called a "hardware reset" on an Acer where you take out the battery, hold the power button down for 20 seconds, and then put the battery back in and boot up. This worked for a number of people on one thread - I tried it on the Toshiba - no luck. I also read a number of times that people with the same problem did a complete reinstall of the OS and that did not fix the problem. So I'm hesitant to do a reinstall (and I don't have the original OS discs, would have to reinstall with a copy).

So I'm less than hopeful that thi... Read more

A:Mouse buttons and keyboard don't respond once booted (Toshiba, Windows XP)

Heh it might not be as bad as you think, first thing u need to try is go in safe mode and try computer restore, this will bring the computer back in time depending when the last automatic restore point was done.

Also, if this don't work and ur using xp home with the install cd u could choose repair the installed system without using the system console, this might replace any corrupted drivers, also if u can go to safe mode with networking with mouse and keyboard functionality try updating windows, maybe ur missing sp2 or sp3 which are very important for hardware drivers.

Also if u can access the internet from safe mode go to the manufacturer's website support page and download the drivers for the the keyboard, trackpad or pointing device ans install them, this might also correct the problem. Give it a shot and let me know how did it go.

My Computer has worked awesome for months. Now all of a sudden after it sits for awhile.(Like 15 mins +) It wont let me click on any windows 7 buttons.
Cant click on icons in the quick launch area.
Cant click the buttons to close an open window.
Yet I can click on desktop icons.

Only way to get it to let me click again is hit CTRL + Alt + Del When the window pops up with the options I can hit cancel and I can click on these things again. It's getting more frequent and annoying!

I have run disk check repair and that didn't help.

Any advice would be great!

On this new laptop the left and right click buttons are in the corners of the trackpad, unlike my old aspire where they were on a seperate pad just below. The problem with the new one is, the cursor moves when you press for left click, making it annoyingly hard to scroll down, stop, then scroll down again. Is there a fault on it, or can this over-sensitivity be adjusted?

A:New windows 7 format successful but very slow to respond

Check the task manager. hold cntrl, alt, delete, & select task manager. Check the performance tab. If everything looks good memory wise, click on over to the networking tab and see how much network traffic you're generating. That should give you an idea of your resources on your machine and on your network. Since you say clicking links I'm assuming those are links to websites. So it could be your browser having a lot of plugins/toolbars? Or maybe a lot of people are using your connection.
Provide a bit more specifics on these things if you can't widdle it down from task manager.

Hi everyone,

I have a strange problem that I'm hoping one of the genius people on here will be able to help me with.

My laptop is a Samsung, about 9 months old and has a pretty good spec.
Suddenly, over the past few days, I've noticed that the keyboard in lagging whenever I'm logged on.
It's fine at the login screen but, once I've logged on the problem occurs - and it happens on all programs.
I know that this is specifically an issue with Windows 8, as I have a virtual Ubuntu machine on here that is working fine.

None of the keyboard settings have been altered and no new applications have been installed or upgraded recently.
Does anyone have any idea what is causing this or how to best resolve it?

Thanks in advance. :-)

A:Laptop keyboard slow to respond on Windows 8

Does Task Manager show a lot of disk activity when you get these lags?

Have you looked in device manager for conflicts? (Yellow '!' characters shown)

One "trick" that support always uses... boot to safe mode, go in device manager(assuming you have no indication of the problem locus from other things checked) and delete the keyboard driver. When you reboot in normal mode plug and play should reinstall the driver. Sometimes that clears up weird problems.

ARGH! - This is driving me nuts. My mouse appears to be going into some kind of "sleep state". It is the basic MS Wireless K/B & Mouse combo. If I do not use the mouse for about a minute, it freezes and will only respond if I depress a mouse key. Of course depressing either key doesn't just "unlock" the mouse, but executes to the screen.

Say for example I was reading a page on IE and my mouse cursor happened to be over the "Back" button. Well, to get my mouse to resond again, I depress the left-button and it then executes the "Back" command. That is what is particularly madening. I can't find any settings for something like this.

The mouse is optical and one thing that I noticed is that when it is in this "sleep" state, the LED flashes rapidly as opposed to being solid during normal use.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I got infected by the bug that hides all of your files (desktop, all programs, administrative tools, etc.). I managed to get my folders back up and my start menu is organized again, but my computer still performs slowly. Sometimes it takes about 2-4 minutes or longer to load after selecting a user when it used to only take a few seconds, I usually can't run any programs for more than about 15 minutes without the program freezing or the computer crashing (especially programs that use a lot of resources such an Adobe program), and I cannot access the security options/task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+delete. Also, the sound on my audio programs is blaring and distorted sometimes, don't know if that is a symptom of the infection or not but it just recently started and it happens through my speakers and headphones. I have run a couple of anti-malware programs including Spyware Doctor and MalwareBytes and they got me to a point of minimal operation, and now I need help getting rid of the rest of this thing. When I open Windows Explorer in the Folders View Mode (folders on the left and files on the right), and try to view the contents of my primary master IDE hard drive, there is a 30 second to 3 minute delay before the drive's contents are display. During the delay, the any other process on the computer also comes to a halt until the drive's contents are displayed in Windows explorer.

If I close the left hand side (folders) in Windows Explorer, there is no delay.

My primary master IDE drive is NOT my boot drive. My boot drive is a separate SCSI drive.

Any Suggestions?

Every time I restart Windows 7 and after logging in, the hard drive light comes on indicating continuing constant disk activity. The hard drive light is on solidly (no blinking). This condition persists for 10 - 15 minutes during which time all applications are extremely slow to respond.

I have tried pausing the search indexer and have also tried pausing my anti-virus software (Kaspersky Internet Security 2013). Neither of these appear to have any effect.

Once the constant hard drive activity has completed, the system operates normally, however I would much prefer to begin using the system soon after startup without having to wait for whatever is causing the hard drive activity to complete..

I have looked at Windows Task Manager and find no applications running other than THX True Studio PC by Creative Systems. Under task Manager processes, "System Idle Process" is shown with 95% - 98% CPU usage.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions about how to track down what is happening and potentiall fix!

A:Windows 7 Constant Hard Drive Activity - Computer Slow to Respond

Task Manager > Performance tab > Resource Monitor > Disk tab

You should be able to press the READ and WRITE columns to see which process / app is using the disk the most at the time of slowdown

Also running a disk check would be advised, right click HDD icon > properties > tools > error checking > check now > agree to schedule a disk check at next boot

Also things like this disk check software can show any faults with the drive
CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World

Check Event Log too to see if there is a problem with windows

So as of today I turned on my computer as normal and everything is running incredibly slowly. Everything takes forever to load and stops responding within a few seconds.

I managed to open the System page and under Processor it says "Not Available" and the same for "Installed Memory (RAM)"

All I have tried is restarting the computer, shutting it down and turning it off for 10 minutes. I have no idea what to do. I also managed to open cmd and try to run sfc /scannow but it said "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

I cant think of anything that changed between last night and today, I havnt downloaded anything... Please give me some advice!

I'd appreciate some help with this and have seen similar threads, but am just not competent to sort this out on my own.

Windows Explorer is no longer reading my camera card. It either fails to respond or just loads the thumbnail icon and then seems to stop, although a couple of times I left it for around 30 minutes and most of the 70 thumbnails had opened, so I'm not completely sure if it's stopped or if it's just so slow the computer thinks it's not working.

It will open them once they are in a folder on the PC and I can transfer them using the Nikon software otherwise I'd have a useless camera!

I'm also getting quite a few "Internet Explorer is not responding messages", and after downloading version 8 went back to version 7 but it's still happening.

I've tried all the different usb slots and different cards with the same reults, so I don't think it's either the card or the usb slots. My other usb devices (modem, mouse etc.) seem to be O.K.

I thought this might be a memory problem so added an extra 1gb. of RAM - it's now 1.5gb instead of 0.5gb. I didn't alter any other settings.

I think when I did this I lost all my restore points.

I've run CC Cleaner, Adaware, Norton, and Malwarebytes after reading these forums hoping to find a virus but all seem O.K.

I'm running Windows XP Service Pack 3 - it's on a recovery partition, I don't have a disc.
It's an HP Pavilion a1215.... Read more

In Firefox, a single click used to change tabs, now it requires a double click. This type of change has also appeared in other programs, so it seems to be a system problem not just a Firefox problem.

Is there somewhere in Win 7 settings where I can set programs to respond to single click rather than double click?

A:Set system to respond to single click instead of double

Try control panel>mouse. You can adjust settings.

Hi Guys,
I am facing this particular issue with some of my PC's.
Right click - on .xls, word, txt files take long time to respond
OS - Windows XP SP3

This has started recently. I've updated Windows + all device drivers
Changed profiles
Still problem persists
Also there is no mapped network drives etc....

Any other suspections ? Pls help.......

A:Right Click Taking a long time to respond

Right click - on .xls, word, txt files

First try doing a Clean Boot to see if the same problem happens.
If this problem only happens with Microsoft Office files (xls, word etc) then try repairing office. Go to Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In the Add Remove Programs scroll down to Microsoft Office and click Change (Remove) this will allow you to add or remove Office products, Repair or Remove Office. Try Repairing Office first. If that fails, and you have and Office CD, try Removing (uninstalling) Office, restart the computer and Reinstall from the CD. You will not loose any Emails or Documents.

My friend's laptop has been acting up lately and he asked me for some help. Some website that he used to visit regularly will not load and if they do, the layout and graphics are all messed up. Also, he can't seem to click on any buttons at all. I tried to install Norton but I can't click on the buttons to register his version. Therefore, I cannot run a virus scan to see if that is the problem. Can anyone help me fix his laptop?

A:Can't Click any Buttons

You can do a virus scan online @ www.housecall.antivirus.com also try empting your TEMP folder and Internet Temp Folder
if you are running win9x its under the windows folder if you are running win2k and up its uder C:\Documents and Settings\NAMEofUSER\Local Settings\...
flush your DNS from a command window START-->RUN-->CMD type the following:
ipconfig /flushdns or if you have win2k xp on the network properties. there is a repair button that will do that for you too it clears all cache.. but not the ones in the folder jsut the one on the TCP/IP stack
also try a ping on the page. get the IP address of it and see if it can load that way or if you ahve the same issue

When I ask google "how do I" questions [regarding screen resolution or appearance or absolutely anything else] I get instruction pages and/or video instructions. None of them make any sense. That is, the step by step instructions don't match what my computer shows me. The buttons are never where the instructions say they are so I cannot make even one adjustment. I detest all platforms after XP and I'd love it to get that look happening again. Here's my info:

my left click doesn't work. even when i touch my touch pad twice to double click it won't either
and then i went to control panel and switched the left function with the right function.
the left clicked worked and did the functions of the right click but the right click didn't do anything

This always happen after like an hour of use and the it will work again after half an hour and then stop working after half an hour.
But then after i restart it it works again!

Thats a simple solution but i hate continually doing this.

This always happens. About 1 hour into using my ACER Aspire E1-522 laptop the left click and the double tap of the touch pad stops working. ARG!

A:Left click and double tap doesn't respond occasionally

The Acer Aspire E1-522 laptop/notebook appears to have a Synaptics or Elantech touchpad.

You didn't say which touchpad driver version is installed nor which Windows version is installed in that laptop.

Reinstalling or updating the touchpad driver may resolve the issue.

If there's an unknown hardware issue with the touchpad, connecting and using an external wireless mouse would be the quickest resolution.

In Firefox I cannot get any button to function by clicking on it. An example would be the search button in google, or any seahc engine, and the log in button on this forum.

I have the newest version of Firefox, but I am forced to use IE for now until I can resolve this...

A:Unable to click buttons

Create a new Profile first and see if that works.

To start the Profile Manager:
Close Firefox completely, Start-> Run-> type
firefox -p

If that works your other Profile is corrupt or some Extensions/Themes don't get along with each other.
If that doesn't work export your bookmarks and do a Clean install.

In Windows 7 64bit (installed today) task bar icons don't respond after Start up.

BUT if I click just once anywhere on desktop surface, or if I double-click any icon
on desktop, upon that all task bar icons start to respond normally!?

Any idea how to get it work properly?

Thanks in advance.

A:Taskbar icons don't respond after Startup till I click at desktop

Sounds like the focus is somewhere other than the Desktop.

If you click on a Taskbar icon twice, not double click, but click once, wait a sec then click again, does it work?
