Documents and Programs files are hidden - GMER scans the 'missing' files

Q: Documents and Programs files are hidden - GMER scans the 'missing' files

My wife received a popup box warning about a problem with the hard drive. She called me over and we didn't click OK but the damage must have already been done.

All of the files appear to be gone. All of the program files and documents that should be in my documents appear empty. Thanksfully I could see GMER scanning all of these missing files so it looks like they are just hidden. I am not taking any action to recover these as I know how that can cause other virus issues so I am just waiting for help.

The computer seems to be working OK in that I have internet access and the programs that show up in the upper left of the start menu can be launched (IE, Outlook, and a Bridge Game that I play) but all of the other 'All Programs' appear empty.

Attached is are log files. I couldn't send to zip file due to computer issue so I am attaching the txt files.

Preferred Solution: Documents and Programs files are hidden - GMER scans the 'missing' files

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi All,

I installed windows 10 around 1 month ago, and last week when I logged into my computer, ALL my files, programs etc. where missing.

I managed to find them deep in the C:, users, name, Microsoft etc under recent items and put them all back into the correct folders.

I come into work this Monday and ALL of the documents, files etc. had disappeared again. I located them in the same folder but this time it would not let me open the files saying (this short cut refers to has been changed or moved so this short cut will no longer work properly) and all the files and documents I had created the week before had disappeared and not even in this folder.

Also, I had uninstalled programs the week before and they where re installed onto my computer.

There is no available dates for the computer to set back too.

I am in real trouble as this is my business computer and my whole lifes work is on there and it would set me back years.

Could someone please help with a solution, remote log-in to my computer etc. to sort this as I could potentially loose everything business wise.

I am willing to pay ? for your help.

Thank you for your time.

Assuming you keep backups of your business data restore from there. If you do not keep backups you can try data recovery software (e.g., Recuva Portable, Restoration.exe) or a data recovery service. Do a web search for services or for more powerful programs.

If this is your main or only computer I advise that you go back to Windows 7 or 8.1 or whatever you were using before Windows 10.

Hello friends,

I am in a bit of a bind. I simply clicked the "show hidden files" option on my C:/Users folder. Inside of 20 seconds, my libraries are all rearranged and none of my files are where I put them originally. They have seemingly vanished.

I downloaded ShadowExplorer and thankfully confirmed that I can still open my files when I refer back to an earlier restore point within the program, but when I go to restore the files, they don't go back to where I send them. I don't know where my files are, nor how to access them outside of this ShadowExplorer program.

I did try a regular 'ol Windows system restore, but those don't affect files, so the problem remains. Anyone have any idea what the hell I did and how I might go about fixing it?

Thank you immensely for your consideration.

A:Show hidden files --> Files now missing

Hello Snapdragon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, see if checking the "don't show hidden files" option will revert them back to how you had them before.

Double check the libraries to make sure that the folders you had included in them are still included.

In addition, see if setting each library to View -> "Sort by -> Name", "Group by -> (None)", and "Arrange by -> Folder" may reveal them.File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by
Hope this helps for now,

I have a 64GB SSD drive and wanted to change the location of Public Documents, Public Music, etc in the Library to my storage drive rather than using the smaller C drive. I already did this with My Documents, My Music, My Pictures. The redirect was successful (going to the folder properties, then location and move) but then I decided it wasn't necessary and restored the default location (C:\Users\Public\Documents).

Which leads to my question. After restoration, everything seems fine except I noticed the Public Documents folder in the Library no longer contains the padlocked inaccessible files named "My Music", "My Pictures" and "My Videos". Also, under C:\Users\(name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries\Documents.library-ms, I no longer see the files with the blue arrow icons (Also named My Music, My Pictures and My Videos) or the padlocked files of the same names.

Will this potentially cause problems in the future? I've been trying to educate myself on Windows 7 over the past couple of years but the phantom files and shortcuts always confuse me I already restored the Public Documents folder to an earlier version but the missing files didn't reappear. I only have the desktop.ini and Thumbs.db files.

Thanks for any help.

A:Public Documents hidden files

Just wanted to give this another shot to see if anyone can explain what those links/files were and if they're necessary in the long haul. Seems like such a trivial thing to ask in the scheme of things but I'm curious and since W7 came with them, I figure they're needed somehow. Thanks.

I don't know if I am in the right part of the forum for this, but I just opened my Documents & Settings folders and find that most of the folders have become hidden, e.g. 'Application Data' is not there, (actually only 5 folders are now visible). It's obviously shown as being there when I do use 'search', so I am wondering what, if anything I have done to hide these folders!.
Can anyone please tell me how to make the missing folders re-appear.

A:Solved: Documents & Settings files hidden

what os is it? start > run > control folders > enter > view tab > untick 'hide operating system files'......that last part may not be varbatim, but it's close enough.....

Bit of a strange problem this..

When ever i try and open a program including paint, IE, firefox, AVG, malware bytes, even my music folder the "which user account do you want to use this program with RUN AS" window appears. If i then say click "current user" then press ok an error message appears.

this service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I cannot "save" screen shots as i get the "access denied" message and a

"the my documents folder could not be found. Right click the documents icon , click properties, and then check that the path to your target folder location is correct.

i also get this error message

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or becasue it has no enabled devices associated with it
I am UNABLE to run GMER though due to the ststem32dll error message as above.

I have managed to do a full virus scan using avg 2011, registry cleaner and spybot search and destroy.

I am guessing this will be either incredibly easy and I am missing something, or incredibly difficult to achieve.

But what I am wanting is to setup my system so that one partition has the ability to view all of the hidden windows files and folders and also hidden system files.

However at the same time for none other partitions on my PC to have this ability.

I can set this up affecting all paritions but there are some that I do not want this feature on.

I know I can laboriously keep switching it back and forth on the drive I want but I would not like to have to do this unless absolutely necessary.

So does anyone know any method that I can achieve what I am wanting.

I am not sure what might be going on, but I am struggling to make this computer work for me as topic says.  I ended up not being able to even do malware scans, the programs just freeze except in safe mode.  Eventually got Malwarebytes to run, it never finds anything, nor does Avast find anything.
Tried setting computer back to earlier time, worked a short time then started blocking me off again.  Can't even access regedit.  Something turned off Windows firewall.
Below are FRST  and  Addition logs.
I don't normally run Chrome, I normally use Firefox.  Firefox doesn't load well right now and I can't navigate with it.

I will be assisting you with your computer issues.  I will endeavor to respond within a reasonable time.   Forum policy requires that I post within 48 hours after your last post, but I do endeavor to post within 24 hours of your last post.
I would ask that you please continue to copy and paste the contents of all requested log files directly into your replies.   Please do not use "code" or "quote" boxes.  Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.
I will need some time to review your FRST logs.  That could take a day or two.
Doing so would complicate the situation and it would cause further delays in resolving your issues.  It could also potentially result in harm to your computer because my "fix" will be based on the FRST scan logs you have already submitted.
Thank you and have a great day.

here is a peculiar problem.!
windows XP is the OS in my system.!

the problem is when i go to..
tools > folder options > view > hidden files and folders
and changing the option from "do not show hidden files"
to "show hidden files" and then applying it..!
still i couldn't view the hidden files & folders.!

when i am checking again in the "folder options"
the check mark i had made in the "show hidden files" has
automatically changed into "do not show hidden files"..???!!!

what might have been happened and how it could be rectified..??!

any help pl..!

A:Missing Hidden Files.!

Are you getting any kind of error when you change the folder option? If you don't have permission to change the folder options, then I would expect that you would get an error saying as much.

Unless you're trying to change a particular folder that is associated with a program that keeps changing the folder option back to hidden, I would begin to suspect a virus type program. Did you do any kind of virus scan?

What folder are you trying to change?

Hello Everyone!

Long time lurker around the forums but I have something I have never seen or dealt with before and I do repairs daily but I need help on this one guys! Today I was working on a vista machine and did a virus removal which went fine. After the restart I noticed the profile was corrupted. I couldn't access documents, control panel, etc it gave an access denied. I then went ahead and logged on to one of the other profiles on the pc and it work perfectly. So I created a new user profile and transferred all the documents and files over to the new one. After the restart I log on to the new one and everything was fine, programs worked, files were there, everything was good or so I thought. I then went and shut down the pc and started it back up, logged on and it took literally 10+ minutes to load. After it loaded it had no icons on the desktop, all the files in the documents folder were gone, pictures, music etc. All the programs are still installed, but no files. What is going on with this machine? Just another reason I f*****g hate Vista.

Oh and I already ran chkdsk, sfc, and it's clean from any infections I believe
Thanks for any help or advice.

A:Missing Documents & Files

Hmmm...there is no reason to blame Vista for your computer being infected. Usually, it's user's fault. In any case...1. Try Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuva2. Go to "Am I Infected?" forum and make sure, your computer is clean.

First, please let me say at the outset that I deeply appreciate anyone's time in attempting to help me! I'll try and keep this as short as possible.

BACKGROUND: Gateway laptop (it's a Tablet but sometimes I'm led to believe it's running XP Pro, I purchased it used and am not certain I'm checking the operating system correctly) approximately 5 yrs old overtaken by some sort of virus/malware. Began getting "blue screens" and tried to run antivirus under Safe Mode, which failed.

I have a support contract with Netgear, who attempted to help me. After some hours they decided to create a new "user" or "profile" and did so. As soon as that was done we tried to go back and bring over some files important to me. They were gone. All attempts to locate have since failed. However, I believe they must be there because when I select Properties under drive C in My Computer both the used and available space are virtually as before.

When this began I was near the end of a subscription to Webroot's anti-virus/spyware. The Netgear people thought this may have been part of the problem as for a week or so before I contacted Netgear the program was constantly trying to run a scan, which it would never complete. As mentioned above, even when I attempted in Safe Mode without networking it did not complete after running for approximately five and a quarter hours (at which point I became frustrated and called Netgear). A:My Documents & other files missing

See if they are located here:

(XP)- C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
(W7)- C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Temp
These will be there unless you have removed temp files / folders

There might be three numbered folders inside C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp folder. The folders will be numbered 1, 2 and 4.

Inside the 1 folder is a folder named ?Programs.? This folder should be copied / pasted to (using XP) to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu, which will already have a folder named Programs but it is safe to overwrite it since Windows will replace the subfolders without creating duplicates.

Inside the 2 folder are the quick launch items specific for the user. Select ALL of these shortcuts and copy / paste to (using XP) C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

Inside the 4 folder are the desktop items that should be copied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop.

For Windows 7 users, the all users start menu is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and the all users desktop folder is C:\Users\Public\Desktop

I don't know if I'm just loosing my mind or if this is actually happening. But if I have a folder or file in my documents and not touch it for a few months, I swear it like deletes itself on it's own 0_0 A couple times I've noticed that they make themselves invisible and I don't notice it unless I do the "show all hidden files/folders" check box. But today I noticed this folder to a sound track I have no longer seems to be on my computer. I know I can be trigger happy with deleting things sometimes, but I'm pretty sure I didn't delete it. I don't think its viruses or malware or anything either, as I run both my anti virus and anti spyware programs on full system scan and nothing other then my usual tracking cookies from sites like my space and that such is detected. Has this happened to anyone else before with Windows Seven?

A:Files and Folders missing in My Documents

I've no idea of how you are doing yourself in, but under the circumstances:

1. I strongly recommend that you start using the best, most reliable, and easiest to use backup software available, namely, Window 7's own Backup & Restore. Try it out.

2. Download an excellent free recovery software, Recuva, Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

For simple file/folder type backups, you might want to take a look at another free microsoft product, SyncToy,

I downloaded the service pack and an update to Norton in the last 10 days. I don't know which caused the problem, but I suspect Windows.

In the My Document folder, the links to any file that has a name that starts with the letters N-Z are gone. Links to folders such as My Pictures, My Webs, My Videos are also missing. They are also missing from the Microsoft Office applications like Word and Excel.

Whenever I save something with a file name that starts with those letters, it doesn't save it. But the files are still in the computer.

Also, when I do a search of the files, they do come up, but I cannot paste them or save them into the My Documents file.

The files are still on my computer, but I can't get to them. How do I restore the My Documents file to work properly. I am using Windows Xp.

Try going to Start > My Computer > C:\ > Documents and Settings
go into the folder that has your username on it. It should contain a copy of your My Documents, although if your files aren't there either, you may end up having to roll back to a restore point.

I opened my documents folder lastnight and every file that was not saved into a folder is gone . Hundreds of Word, Excel, and other files just gone. I've searched everywhere and found nothing. I tried System Restore but it was turned off when I ran a virus scan and I forgot to turn it back on. Is there any other way to restore these files? What would cause these files to just vanish? I ran two different spyware and ad ware programs and also a virus scan and came up with nothing. Any help or advice would be great. Thank you.

You could give Recuva a shot. Scan your hard drive and it might find files that were deleted.

I was surfing online and randomly this adobe flash installer caused my UAC to pop up asking to allow the install, I know it wasn't flash but it just kept coming up so I shutdown, got into safemode, files looked gone, but I just checked show hidden files. I ran combofix since i've used it numerous times before, but without a script this time. It never showed its logs, but it deleted the infected files. Then I ran hijackthis and found some suspicious stuff running.. RKill shut down some processes for me too, but I don't seem to be able to decipher them well. In conclusion I have hidden files all across my system now, my program shortcuts aren't in the start menu, except remote desktop connection.. I did have to remove the virus causing the popups and all to come. I did not record down the name, didn't even think of it.

I have a 128gb Intel SSD. I don't have much installed, the three biggest folders are for Battlefield 4 (45gb), My Documents (23gb) and Windows (25gb) I think.

The My Docs folder is way too big....I looked into it and could not find anything. Hilighting all of the files shows about 12gb of files and pictures.

There is a folder in the hidden files that is 9gb . Appdata>Local>Microsoft

What is this file? Even when I go into it and highlight files, there is nothing that comes out to that amount of space....is it just an allocated amount for temp files or something?

Is this where the page file is allocated? I have the page file set to 12gb, do I need this much with 12gb of RAM?

So last night I received a message that a change needed to be made to my hard drive. The message listed itself as being from Windows _________ (sorry I don't remember). I meant to hit that I didn't want the change, but accidentally clicked yes. Nothing happened at that time. I had been running a scan with Malwarebytes and restarted upon the completion of that scan.

When my computer restarted my desktop was black, I had only three icons on my desktop (recycle bin, google chrome and Malwarebytes). I also received several messages saying there was an issue with my harddrive. I immediately restarted in safe mode and began running scans with Malwarebytes and Avast. These scans uncovered several infections (one scan with Malwarebytes even listed about 1100 infections). Once these scans and a bootscan with Avast was complete I restarted by computer normally. Unfortunately, there was no change.

After some searching, I realized that my files were simply hidden and after downloading and running unhide.exe it appears that most of my files are back. However, my desktop is still black, my quick launch icons are gone, some of my desktop icons are gone (I notice specifically that Internet Explorer is gone) and the right side of my taskbar has several icons (about 11) listed instead of the previous minimized box thing that pulled up.

I need help making sure that the problem is gone and how to fix these remaining issues.

Thank you in advance.

I am looking n for some help. I had a virus/malware that kept running a "scan" and directing me to purchase an antivirus program...the scan that was run was called "analyzing PC & stability"...it is similar to a virus that I had a few months back. Previously, I had downloaded SUPER antispyware and it solved my problem. I did the same for this current issue and while it appears to have stopped the malware from prompting the fake scan, all my files and programs are hidden (nothing on desktop or my computer, etc..) Also, when I try to download SUPER antispyware or any other type of antispyware (or download anything for that matter)it will download but then it will not run...it asks me what program I want to use to run the file and nothing seems to work..

I am running Windows XP. Any help will be much appreciated.

Here's the story...

A while ago the hard drive in my lap top (HP, windows xp) started aking weird clicking noises and then it would crash. After a couple of times I ran the trouble shooter and it said it had a bad connection so I took out the HD, dusted the connections, put it back in and restarted. Seems to have worked, clicking gone, no more crashing. However, after I restarted windows ran something called "diskcheck" or something like that and deleted or reformatted some corrupted files, it also said it was backing up the system at some point. My computer now works fine. However, I have an 80gb (74.? to be sort of precise) hard drive and had about 38gb of free space left on it. now it says I have only slightly over 4gb of free space. I've tried defragging and all that, but it doesn't even have enough space to defrag properly.

After checking out some forums and asking around a bit, the most likely problem I can figure out is that windows has backed up and copied everything on my hard drive back on the it self (the math seems to work out- I have about twice as much space used as I did previously, minus the master boot).

My question is: How do I access and delete the unwanted doubled data?

I've been working at it for hours and am at the end of my tether on this.

Thanks very very very much to anyone who can shed a bit of light on the situation.

-Attila the Fun

I am in a bit of a pickle. I know now that I picked up a virus of some sort. It popped up telling me that I had a hard drive error. I immediately started scanning with Microsoft Security Essentials and it picked up a couple of viruses and told me to reboot. Hi there,

1. Cannot view hidden folders, despite changing Folder Options settings repeatedly

-- Automatically reverts back to "Do not show hidden files and folders"

2. On startup, I receive the error message that Windows cannot find the file "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\conime.exe"

3. When I try to access Regit in my Windows folder, I receive an error message that Windows cannot find the file "C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe"

My most recent master recordings from FL Studio have disappeared. The files are in a format known as ".flp", and all of the files that I've done from about the Summer of 2012 up until just a few days ago, have vanished. As far as I can tell, none of my pictures, word documents, music etc. have been affected. But for whatever reason, my master recordings from within the last year, have been. Our PC was infected with ZeroAccess Root kit. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my missing files or not. I've gone through a few recovery steps including, trying to restore a Previous Version of the respective directories back to a state where my files should have been there. I attempted to do a Backup and Restore via the Control Panel, but that feature was never set up for this computer, so that wouldn't have worked. The odd thing that I noticed is that I had a similar issue before. I was never able to access these recent files outside of FL Studio, but when I was in the program itself, I was. I also noticed that when I would access them from the program, there was a "lock" icon next to the name of the files. This lock icon was not present on any of the older files, just the ones from about June/July 2012 going forward. While I was on Internet Explorer looking at some furniture websites and Pinterest, I downloaded some stuff, then wrote an email and about 20 windows cascaded across the screen. Then a pop-up (which I may or may not have clicked on) with some sort of bogus scan that found bad stuff. I restarted the computer and it did the same thing. I think the fake scan was called S.T.A.R.T.

My desktop was now blank and no programs showed up in File Explorer.

I ran Windows Security and Malwarebytes which found q2VRHJjifZ4RHt.exe and DKgPKMXgvSnGH.exe and PUM.Hijack.StartMenu (Reg Data) and TrojanWin32/FakeSysDef

I figured out how to make my files and programs show in Explorer but they are still not on the Start menu.

I use Microsoft 7 Home Premium. Thank you for any help.

Start menu programs gone, Icons, files and folders hidden, random audio, IE redirect
Last night, I was surfing the net. Suddenly audio started playing on my speakers, and desktop icons started disappearing. I hit control+alt+delete, and it said task manager has been disabled by the administrator, which, or course is me to begin with. I ran a scan with microsoft security essentials antivirus, it found nothing. I scanned with malwarebytes, it found a couple things. My program files in the start menu are GONE. Come to find out, that in my documents, files were simply hidden....but random audio continues to play, and whenever I use google, i get redirected. Here is the DDS log I am to post. I'm helping a friend who had a malware infection, which has now apparently been eradicated. Vista Home Premium SP2 32bit. I don't know if the problems it still has are a result of the malware, or if they were preexisting on my friend's computer. But I suspect they were used by the malware to protect itself.

*The taskbar won't unlock, even temporarily (in contrast to the folder properties issue mentioned below).
*I can't show hidden files/extensions, even temporarily.
*Folder properties can't be altered permanently, e.g. the user documents folder is always displayed as "Pictures and Videos" type instead of "All Items" ; can't set to use Windows Classic folders, show full path in Title Bar, etc. These items CAN be altered temporarily, but the previous settings always revert on rebooting.)
*Context menu items such as new folder, new text document are not present.
*Deleted files do not show up in the recycle bin.
*No matter which browser (FF or MSIE) is set as default, when the default browser is reopened it always states to this effect: "This is not the default browser. Would you like to make it the default browser?"

These did not return to normal after doing a system restore to 3 weeks before the time the malware became apparent.
The system restore was done before eliminating the malware. The following were tried afterwards:
I ran Unhide (from Bleepingcomputer) several times; no effect.
I ran System File Checker several times; ... Read more

If a new admin account you have created posts no issues at all, then it strongly indicates that the "old" admin account has been corrupted.

Removal of the old admin is the order of the day.

How to deal with corrupted user profile :

Note : You must have at least three user accounts on the computer to complete these steps, including the new account you just created.

Hi i recently came back from holiday in Toronto to find that all my files are missing on my computer. i switched on the computer and my monitor was not working my little brother broke it so i went out and bought a new one. Once i bought the new one the screen worked fine but then a black screen with white writing came up. I think i said restore computer to previous setting it gave a list of a few options so i clicked enter. So everything was fine. But then when i logged into my username my desktop background was changed to i believe the basic one and my cursors look small whenever i open a new window it looks small like the restore, minimize and close buttons on every window are really tiny. Also whenever i right click on the desktop its no longer white its grey. Before this i could use the internet but now i cannot and a message pops up whenever i do anything in my user area saying you do not have the right path to access device.

The annoying thing is all my work files, family photos, music, programs everything is gone from only my username/area. All the files in all the other user areas are fine. All my sisters files and programs are fine. On my desktop its just the basic files like internet explorer, recycle bin, Mozilla, safari, iTunes that's pretty much it when i click start there is nothing there no programs. I repeat its only my username that is having such problems perhaps because i was the admin user. I tried to do system restore but that did not work. I'm... Read more

A:All My Files and Programs are Missing

It sounds like your account may have been deleted and then recreated. Your files may be gone. But do a search of the entire computer for some of them just to see if they may have been relocated.

All your settings in the new account will need to be set up again the way you want them.

Also, look in C:\Users to see what accounts are there and if your old one may be present.

(Memory does not change and you always have the same amount unless a stick is added or removed. You have 512 MB's of memory/RAM, probably the same amount you have always had.)

a friend of mine asked me to take look at their PC running XP. he told me all his documents and programs are missing and he has no idea how it happened. to me the profile looked like a clean new profile with some preinstalled programs. there are no other profiles on the pc and he assures me this is the profile he always used.

I am tech savvy. i have looked though all folders in doc & settings and searched the PC for photos but there is nothing. no music, photos... its all gone like it was never there. the only thing i noticed was about 90mb of temp internet downloads which means it was obviously in use for a while. what could cause something like this to happen?

What about logging off and seeing what accounts are available?

Long story here - please bear with me. I'm running XP Home on a Dell Inspiron 8100. A few days ago the LCD blew out. Since the machine is still under warranty, a Dell dispatched service tech arrived at home to replace the LCD. Upon start up, up popped a blue screen which the tech said would require a "repair" reinstall of XP so that all my data wouldn't be lost. He started the reinstall, and then darted out the door. When finished, I was prompted to enter a user name - which I did. However (!) all my data is apparently gone, and the only thing the machine does is run XP as all the apps are missing also. When I spoke to Dell they told me that I should reinstall the apps, and maybe (maybe!) my data would reappear (magically I suppose). I don't know that much about this stuff, but that sounded like bunk. But, here's my question: "Is it possible that the missing data and apps problem is being caused by the fact that I'm now logged on as a different user?" Like I said, I don't know that much about this stuff and XP is very, very new to me. If it's a logon problem, how can I tell, and more importantly, how do I recover data and apps that were all either entered or loaded under a different logon ID? Thanks for any advice you can give, but (please) keep it a little on the simple side ( ).

Hi, I've got a bit of a problem with my computer.

I got back in from work today, and my sister was logged onto the guest account, she was finished with the computer, so I closed what she had open, logged into my own, and... nothing, while the "loading personal settings" message was showing, I got an error message.
(sorry... forgot to jot down what it said, something along the lines of "unable to load settings", it had a timer in the top corner...)

It wouldn't let me do anything from there, so I turned it off, turned it back on again.

Now, on my account, the background is set back to default, and a good number of my shortcuts are missing.
There's programs missing from the start menu, too.
Also, there was a search bar on the start menu I've never seen before, "Nero Search".
I searched for what it was via google, when I open firefox, it asks me if i want to import setting + set it as the default browser, as if it's just been installed.

Anyway, I unistalled Nero essentials, and nothing changed, only the search bar disappeared.

While i was Add/Remove programs, it looks like most, if not all of my programs are there, I currently have a Malwarebytes scan running, it's going through all my files, despite the fact that if I go to My Doccuments, it's empty, only the default "my pictures" and "my music" folders are there.
It seens to be, only my account is doing this, the others have all their files in t... Read more

Both laptops OS : Win 7

As above. I bought a new laptop recently and stupidly went to surf the net for a short period without any AntiVirus protection.

Soonafter, I inserted some flash drives to transfer stuff to my new laptop, but I realised that all the files in my flash drives are hidden and replaced by shortcuts.

I suspected a virus and inserted my flash drive back to my old laptop, which AVG immediately detected as a Dorkbot Backdoor. I recovered all my files in the flash drives already.

I installed and ran AVG full scan on my new laptop, it removed mostly Dorkbot Backdoors , trojans and 1 corrupted executable.

However, I tried accessing most Antivirus sites such as Norton to test, but I can't connect to it.

I think the virus is still present somewhere.

Any help is appreciated. =)

A:Dorkbot Virus infection. It converts all files in flash drive to hidden files.

Update :

I've decided to reformat my new laptop since it is new anyway. It isn't a painful process yet.

Will update if the traces of the virus is still present.

Any files I move to external drives are converted to windows system files, hidden, and have a shortcut created.  Anything in a folder is not touched.  It doesn't seem to reinfect other computers that it is subsequently plugged into.  Tried Malware Bytes and it did not remove the problem.  Running Windows 8.1.  Saw a suggestion of using Combofix on another forum, not Windows 8.1 Compatible. DSS is not compatible either it tells me.

A:Files moves to flash drive converted to system files and hidden

Hello,it's important that you don't open one of these shortcuts from now on. This leads to a re-infection.Please run a FRST scan to begin with:Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.(If you are not sure which version (32-/64-bit) applies to your system, download and try to start both of them as just the right one will run.)Start FRST with administator privileges.Make sure the option Addition.txt is checked and press the Scan button. When finished, FRST will produce two logs (FRST.txt and Addition.txt) in the same directory the tool was run from. Please copy and paste these logs in your next reply.

Hello all,I think this is a pretty simple answer. I have been looking over the internet but haven't not found a solid solution. I have a subscription to Bitdefender 2009 Antivirus. Hi All,

I wanted to thank you all in advance for any input into my misery.

About a month ago I didn't log out of the computer (left it logged in running on battery) and eventually it died due to low battery.

After restarting I realized that most installed by me programs are missing their exe files. They don't show up on "programs and features" list, they don't come up on the start menu, the files created in such programs have no program association, and even when clicking on "open with" the program doesn't show up on the list of choices.

I can see all the folders still there, but no exe files to start the programs.

I tried re-installing Adobe Photoshop elements today. It finished the process successfully, I could see a shortcut on the desktop appear but after a reboot, the program is gone again, and shortcut disappeared. It doesn't show up anywhere, as mentioned.

Also, back when I first tried to solve the issue, I tried restoring the system. I only found one restore point from about the day I left the computer running.

I ran CCleaner, MalwareBytes to no avail. I tried looking at Event Log but can't find anything specific.

Any thoughts?

A:Exe files going missing. Programs disappear

Hello and welcome Eve look try running some recovery software and one that comes to mind is this https://www.piriform.com/recuva > download from piriform and let us know if you can get back those files as it is very hard to delete stuff completely by what you have done and it usually takes a real wipe to destroy data.

I was being an idiot and attempting to edit the Comodo internet security helper logon under services. I by accident incorrectly filled out the account name and location. When I restarted my computer everything was gone, I am unable to logon to my guest account because it says the account can not be loaded. My desktop on my admin/regular account is completely gone all that is there is the recycle bin and the background is missing. I am unable to click on my documents and everything under this account is gone. I have tried system restore multiple times but it will not fix the issue. I have found all my files and programs under local disk but it seems that nothing is installed on any of my accounts and most activities says application can not be loaded. Is there a way to restore my user account to the way it was with all programs and files returned and being installed?

Thanks for the help and yes I was being retarded for editing services that i did not know how to work. FML

Here's what's going on:

Had several programs open last night, Word, Firefox, iTunes. I had just downloaded some new music from amazon.com. Went to iTunes to "add a new folder" to search for music. When the dialog box opened to select the folder I noticed about half of my sub-directories under My Music were not showing up. So, I closed the dialog box and tried again only to find only four subdirectories showing up. Time to re-boot! When the computer restarted everything was missing, all programs, all files and almost all of my sub-directories.

What I did:

Well, Norton AntiVirus still worked (hmmm, virus anyone?) so I did a scan and it came up with nothing. Checked my C drive properties and found it still showed 67.2GB in use which makes me feel a little better. Tried a System Restore twice to no avail. Everything is still missing. Did a CHKDSK and Memory Check and everything passed. No errors found. CHKDSK did show 31188 files on the disk. Went to bed.

Now what?:

Currently at work so just seeking advice for when I get home. A friend at work gave me AVG Rescue to try. Don't know if I should do this first or check into the "too many programs in the start menu" issue I've read about. All I really care about are my photos and my music. If I can get those back and back them up I'll just do a System Recovery (after I run AVG) and reload everything.

Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

A:Everything is missing, Programs, Files, Directories

Download and run malwarebytes, updated and at full scan
If negative, type the name of the program in search, if still on your system it will show.

System restore will not get personal documents back.
Go back a week with back up and restore and all your stuff will be back like before the problem.
