Windows 7 Laptop isn't working with external IBM e74 monitor.

Q: Windows 7 Laptop isn't working with external IBM e74 monitor.

Hello,

Yesterday my new laptop arrived, Windows 7 (64-Bit) pre-installed, I've downloaded all the updates; there are no other issues with this computer.

The only problem I'm having has to do with the external monitor; it's a IBM (6332) E74 monitor. Windows 7 detects and correctly names the external monitor E74, but the monitor just flashes no signal. I also located and downloaded the the IBM E74 drivers .zip file, but Windows 7 , says it is already using the latest drivers and ignores them.

Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi - Using IBM T42 with External Monitor. When booting Win XP Home SP3, both monitors work, then laptop monitor goes blank. External monitor works fine. I have tried everything I can think of - resetting displays, changing ATI Radeon mobility 7500 driver, disconnecting external monitor, Function key combinations, booting in safe mode. Nothing works. But when the laptop boot starts, the laptop monitor works for a few minutes then shuts down. Seems like a switch is not working properly.
Any ideas as to how to solve this problem. And the laptop monitor was working fine until a few days ago, the last time I used it alone, i.e., separate from the external monitor.

Many thanks in advance.

A:Laptop Monitor Not Working External Fine

Being that the ibm t42thinkpad is an older model its very possible that the whole screen will need replaced as the ribbon cable, inverters, or backlights might have gone bad.replacing the whole screen might be easier to do than trying to find the individual parts needed.

Hello I have been fighting issues with my external monitor not turning back on after sleep. I have it set to hybrid mode, I understand the other fix is to set it to discrete mode but my other laptop of the same type does wake up after moving the mouse in hybrid mode. I tried multiple things. 1.) Updated Intel Management Drivers and Software 2.) Updated Thunderbolt Software 3.) Used Graphic Driver Uninstaller and to no avail.  I also installed every update for Windows 10 on their web site. The other fix is to enable and disable the NVIDIA driver in the and that wakes up the HDMI port it seems, but that should not be the case, I would like it to just turn on with the flick of the mouse or button like my other laptop. Is it a failing graphic card of Nvidia or Intels end? I do notice after the monitor sleeps the NVIDIA drivers control panel settings go missing. I already uninstalled completely and reinstalled the drivers but my computer is still having this problem. Are their any suggestions on Lenovo's end or fixes? I bought this laptop from Amazon and I also joined a 3 year support service from them.

A:Lenovo P50 - HDMI External Monitor Not Working After Sleep (My Other Laptop of the Same Kind does)

Have you compared the Power Option settings on the two laptops to see if they match as well?Do the two systems share the same monitor, and if not, how is your monitor configured, does it have an option to set the input source to HDMI vs. automatically detecting the source? When in the mode where the screen does not turn back on, what happens if you press the following key combination Windows Key + Shift + Ctrl + B  (forces a reset of graphics cards) do you hear a beep and your screen wake up?     That key combination sometimes works to wake the monitors, and while not a solution, it may be a work around until you find a permanent one. Best of luck,

I upgraded to Windows 10 last week and everything was smooth.  Today when rebooting my system, the unit no longer can see my external display.  I have tried multiple other displays and none seem to work.  I have the latest video drivers for Win10 from the support site installed but it still doesn't work.  Any thoughts?

A:Yoga 2 Pro + Windows 10 = External Monitor not working via micro HDMI

I experienced the same - and also inconsistently that the system is going sluggish/lagging heavily. To fix problem with HDMI downgrade to drivers for Win8.1 - it works but hopefully Lenovo will fix this issue with Win10 drivers!? Overall upgrading to Win10 has been a bad experience (regarding the lagging of the system which usually occurs after 20-30 min after logging on). I've tried removing all third-party startup programs (including Lenovos) - but to no help. The frustration is increasing - any tips will be appreciated :-)

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

A:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

Hi,I have a brand new xps 13 and no matter what I cannot get Windows 10 to identify my 27in external monitor as the larger monitor. I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

My old dell laptop L502x is a bit quirky and caused me to buy a desktop, however, i think it is still saveable. when i have it display to an external monitor via hdmi, it works 100% with no problems. however, when i use the monitor that is physically attached to the laptop, i will get a " A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor" BSOD. from what i've gathered over numerous crashes, i believe its a problem with the integrated graphics in the processor, since they are not used when outputting via hdmi. i could be wrong tho, any help is greatly appreciated.

Windows 10 laptop. I connect it to an external monitor and use hdmi cable. My external monitor is my main monitor. I use the laptop monitor as the secondary monitor. I extend the display.

My desktop icons are always on my external monitor desktop. I had moved the hdmi cable connected to my laptop i believe which caused all my icons from my external monitor to go on the laptop monitor. Also there is even spacing on all of the icons. Has anyone had this happened? I then clicked sort and then it rearranged so there is no spacing etc. However, i then noticed hey why are my icons on my laptop monitor and not my external monitor.

Does anyone know why this happened? When i open chrome and other programs, it does open up on my external monitor though which is my primary monitor. I believe i can just drag each of the icons on my desktop on my laptop screen to my external monitor. So just do this and that fixes the issue right? Or is there a way to have all the icons just move to the external monitor. The reason i ask this is in case the icons just suddenly move to the laptop screen again.

Hello. What might be happening is after you connect to the external display, the audio switches to HDMI audio. To get the audio to emit from the laptop's speakers again, go to the Windows Sounds dialog and make Speakers the default playback device (right click). You might have to do this every time you connect an HDMI cable.

Hi,

I have an ageing Dell laptop running Windows XP. As it has a fairly small (40GB) internal IDE hard-drive that is pretty full I use a couple of external drives for non-essential stuff like music, videos etc. A few days ago I switched on one the external drives and nothing happened! I usually access my external drives by going into My Computer and clicking on it there but the icon simply didn't appear. At first I thought it was a problem with the drive itself, but when I tried another drive the same thing happened. So far, I've tried 2 mains-powered external drives, 2 portable drives and several USB flash-drives and I can't access any of them.

I have since tested most of my external memory devices on a relative's laptop/notebook and they work just fine, so it seems to be a problem with the USB ports and/or Window XP missing drivers? If I go into Device Manager the connected HDDs appear okay and it states that everything is working normally. Also, I have checked XP's Disc Management program and they show up in there too, but as unformatted drives, hence why the no-show in My Computer. When I plug in a USB flash-drive it does show up in My Computer, but when I try to access it I get a message saying the drive isn't formatted. But, as I have already mentioned, I have tested the drives on another computer and they all still work fine. Help!

Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more

But again, no luck using the HDMI port with a VGA to HDMI adapter. So I'm fresh out of ideas. Had anyone been able to resolve this successfully with this setup? And if so, how? Hi, first post!

I have an ASUS VW246H, 24 inch external monitor connected to my two laptops, one via HDMI, and another via DVI (viewing one at a time ofcourse).
My new laptop (Dell xps 17) has had the dual display running smoothly until right now (it was running just few hours ago!) and now it doesn't work!!
I plug in the HDMI cable, the monitor detects that something is plugged in, turns black for a sec, and then just displays "HDMI No Signal".

p.s. in the past hour I did boot into my second partition (Ubuntu, Linux) which doesn't have a dual monitor setup but I by accident left the HDMI plugged in. I 'think' I have done that several times before without anything going wrong. Dont know what happened this time!

p.s.s. I have tried to go in monitor settings on windows 7, look at the NVIDIA control panel and it cant find any external monitors. I have also tried toggling Fn + F1 which is the external display switch.

I have a Windows 10 laptop and an external monitor. The monitor was working perfectly for a few weeks, until one day I switched on the laptop to find that the monitor was no longer working. Going to 'Display Settings' only showed one monitor, and pressing 'Detect' said 'Didn't detect another display'.

After updating all drivers, then purchasing new leads and adapters for the monitor, I still couldn't get it to work. Then I stumbled upon the 'Hardware and devices' troubleshooter which, after restarting my computer, made it work.

Less than a week later, I just restarted my machine and suddenly it's not working again. This time, the troubleshooter isn't fixing it. Every time, it just says to restart my computer to finish applying updates/drivers but restarting doesn't help.

Anyone have ideas how I can fix this?

Ever since updating to Windows 10, my Yoga 2 Pro (model name 20266, Mfg Date 14/08/2014) is unable to connect to an external monitor. Tried a few TVs and a projector using the micro HDMI port. I've connected other computers to each of the monitors so I know they work. I understand how to use WIndows intimately (35 year old software engineer at Google, been using WIndows 20+ years), trust me, this is not a case of me forgetting to use Windows key + P or anything like that. The mirco HDMI port itself (physically) is fine and was working great until the day I downloaded Windows 10. So unless it happened to spontaneously stop working on the exact same day i upgraded to WIndows 10, it's not a hardware issue either. The issue is that the external monitor is simply not detected, no matter my attempts to play with the display options.I have also run the Intel driver update utilty, but it refuses to update the driver because it says it's detected manufacturer drivers and tells me I should get the manufacturer drivers. Hi

In general I use my laptop in one place, so I use external keyboard and monitor. Most of my stuff I do only on external monitor, but when i work (code and stuff) I like using both monitors (external as main + laptop monitor as secondary).

The problem is with switching between views. All I do is open laptop if I wanna use both monitors and close it if I don't need external. I have two problems:
1. After doing this operation (either open or close) windows will freeze for like almost 2 seconds before "adding" extra monitor - which is really annoying

2. I use my external monitor as default ALWAYS. But during this 'switching time' all applications which are set up to 'full screen' are changed to be 'still fullscreen' but smaller, like maybe 1-2 pixels smaller, and this is really annoying. To make it 'real fullscreen' again i have to switch it to smaller window - and maximalize again.
I hope You understand what I'm saying.

I really have problem with fixing at least second problem. I would be happy with the way it was in windows XP - so "laptop-monitor" is always reachable for applications - even when it's not active.

I have windows 7 x64
Nvidia optimus with Nvidia gt540m and intel card graphic

setting default GPU to Nvidia or intel doesn't affect the problem

A:Laptop + external monitor

You probably have different resolutions between the two monitors, so a maximized window on one, won't be the same size on the other. You may not have this issue if the screens are set at the same resolution. I recall having consistent results back when I had a laptop + external monitor which both had the same (1440x900) native resolution.

I'm thinking about getting a Raspberry Pi, but I don't have a monitor I can use.  Is it possible to connect it to the HDMI port on my P50 laptop, and use the laptop as a monitor?  I've seen this done on Apple computers, and it seems like it should work here too.

Trying to use my laptop with an external HP monitor; I have them connected; using FN & F4 keys I can toggle between displays (monitors) or both.  However, when only external monitor is on (which I want), & I close the laptop lid (as the HP monitor is designed to slide the laptop under it), the laptop shuts off & the external monitor goes dark. How do I keep the laptop on when the lid/screen is closed?  (HP Tech Support wants $49 to tell me.) Thanks.

A:External Monitor with laptop

Hi, Right click the Battery icon in the Taskbar and select Power Options. In the following window, select 'Choose what closing the lid does' in the left hand pane. In the subsequent window, next to the heading 'When I close the lid' set this to 'Do nothing' in the dropdown menu for both 'On battery' and 'Plugged in'. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the window to apply this change. Regards, DP-K

But have no idea how to do it. Does anyone know how I might do this? I'd ideally like to rig it up to an HDMI adapter, but VGA would be fine as well.

A:Want to rig up an old laptop lid as an external monitor.

Kbronski, Sorry to tell you this but the screen on a laptop is not the same as a external monitor.. It requires the electronics from the laptop to drive it. So the answer is no.

You do not mention the operating system. Are you wanting to use both monitors at once ore are you experiencing trouble with the built in monitor? When you plug in the external monitor is it detected? Does it show up in Device Manager under monitors? If you are running XP. Go to Control Panel > Display > do not recall the exact path from this point. But under one of the tabs will be a black window. In the window should be two monitors. There will be options to set the primary and secondary monitors as well as an option to "Extend Desktop into this monitor" or similarly worded. Is it checked?

I have an Inspiron 8200 Dell Laptop and want to hook up an external monitor that I have. I plug the monitor cable into the back of the laptop and through settings can bring up the wallpaper on my laptop and drag items over to the monitor but what I want to do is to only utilize the external monitor. I don't want to have to drag items over across the screens. Is there a way to disable the monitor on the laptop and only use the external monitor?

Press the function key, it's purple I think and says fn, and then press the F8 key CRT/LCD.

Hello,

A recent tragedy has left the display on my laptop inop. only approximately 1/10th of the display in the top left corner remains. I have an old Dell flat panel monitor that I wanted to hook up to have at least some functionality while I pursued a new computer or a replacement monitor. (feel free to comment on this as well).

When I hooked up the monitor, it worked as I had hoped. I saw my entire desktop on the external monitor. The only issue was the resolution was different making everything appear too large for the screen. I adjusted the resolution, and next thing I know, the only option is to "stretch monitor across both screens". This leaves the toolbar and all icons on the screen that does not work. All I have been able to do is to drag the toolbar to the external monitor and just restore/move any windows that open to that monitor. This is very cumbersome and too much for my wife to deal with.

I have a feeling that adjusting the resolution is what started my trouble. Please remember when giving advice that my primary monitor has only about 10% usable space, this makes accessing many tools difficult.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions,

Scott

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1505 running xp media center. The video card is a radeon 256 and I think it is integrated, but I don't know the complete specs. Can get them from Dell if needed.

If you use the ATI Catalyst Control you should be able to close the display to the external monitor.

Or Press FN and one of the F# keys on the keyboard and it should also enable the secondary monitor as an identical clone to the LCD panel.

I just bought a laptop with a shattered screen. It's an HP Pavilion dv2315nr. Nothing custom or altered. It works fine, but with the screen broken, and me unable to afford a replacement yet, it's basically just a desktop for now.

My problem is that I've been trying to use it with an LCD monitor. I hook it up, but the picture doesn't automatically transfer to the LCD like older laptops did. HP designed it so that you have to press the FN+F4 keys to switch to an external dispay. No matter how many times I try, it won't switch to the LCD. I've tried it at various points during the startup, and varied the ways I press the key combo. It did switch a couple times the first day I had it, but Windows Vista has a password on it so I couldn't go farther. When I restarted to try and do a system restore, it switched back to the laptop's display.

I need this thing to immediately switch to the LCD when it turns on so I can do a system restore and use it until I get a replacement screen. To do a system restore, I have to press F11 immediately while starting up. I've done that, waited a few minutes, and tried to switch to the LCD. It won't do it. And I can't think of anything else to try.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello

I have a laptop with two VGA (intel & nvidia). I can connect external monitor with HDMI (clone mode), only with intel (from intel's menu).
is there any way to connect the external monitor with the nvidia card?

A:laptop with two VGA & external monitor

If the nVidia adapter is VGA only you'd have to use an adapter/cable to HDMI.

Hi, I am really need help. Trying many ways but nothing helps.
My laptop doesn't recognize my external monitor.
I was trying to connect monitor to my friend's dell laptop (he have smaller laptop, but very similar with mine) and all works just instantly after connect.
At the same time, on my laptop external monitor was work after many actions with drivers, uefi, etc. And in the end I don't understand what factors can help me in past to connect with monitor. But I can say, that external monitor works at first time after install drivers and rebooting pc, I think.
Recently I reinstall my operating system and trying to connect external monitor again - as I expect - laptop doesn't recognize it again. To resolve it, I am install the drivers, trying actions, that helps me, how i think, in past. In the end - nothing works and laptop doesn't recognize the external monitor again, like in past.

All characteristics that can help are below.

Laptop - Dell Inspiron 17R 5721
Motherboard System - UEFI A14

Video Cards
Integrated - Intel HD Graphics 4000
Discrete - AMD Radeon HD 8500M/8700M Series (Mars)

External Monitor - IIyama Prolite XB2483HSU

Connection between laptop & monitor - HDMI-HDMI

My Thoughts
I really don't understand what happens. In past I have the experience to connect different laptops and external monitors and always it was very easy. Just put in hdmi cabel and all works! I can't understand what's wrong with my laptop. ... Read more

A:Laptop & External Monitor

Ok, I found the solution! From random posts in internet I was create list of different actions to resolve my problem & one of them help me.
Solution.
1. Disconnect the external display
2. Restart Windows, and disable SecureBoot from BIOS (also must be uefi boot mode instead of legacy)
3. Once you are logged into Windows, re-install the display drivers.
I want to tell more about this paragraph.
How do I re-install display drivers?
- Open Device Manager
- Delete Intel Graphic device & his drivers
- Delete AMD Graphic device & his drivers
- When you delete graphic devices & drivers windows must start to search for drivers in internet and trying to install them (windows must have permission to install drivers automatically)
- When install starts - just waiting for the end - it can install about 5-10 minutes
4. After install connect the monitor - if monitor still doesn't work (like in my situation), reboot laptop again and leave the monitor on & connect to laptop.
Monitor must work after this at Welcome screen moment.
5. If it doesn't work yet
- try standard fn+F1 combination (it must work already after all that you've done before)
- wait about 5 minutes for windows (it can start to download some drivers for monitor - I think it's the most important moment - at my situation this drivers start to download before last laptop reboot) and than reboot laptop again with the monitor on & connect to laptop
- just reboot it again with the monitor on... Read more

Is it possible to use an external monitor as the only monitor via laptop besides setting the external monitor to the secondary monitor and closing the lid of the laptop making it as if the external monitor was the only monitor? I ask this extremely lengthy question because I am trying to run my display at 1360x768 but my laptop monitor is only 1280x768 crippling the display of the external monitor. (edit: this theory is incorrect. I can only blame the laptop driver's inability to display the higher resolution. For some reason it can display 1360x768, but only when panning in 1280x768)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dumb question?  To use an external monitor on my Inspiron, what port do I plug into on the laptop?

A:using an external monitor on laptop

It depends on the system model -- specifically which type of port(s) it has -- and on the monitor, and the same.
No one can answer without knowing those two things.
