Time to ask for help : Internet cuts out at peak speed

Q: Time to ask for help : Internet cuts out at peak speed

Hello everyone, I recently bought a SSD and installed W7 64-bit on it ( 2 weeks ago ). Ever since when my transfer rate reachs more than 1+MB/s internet cuts out on the WHOLE house. Other members of family can download at 4-5 mb/s without problem. I'm using NetLimiter to stay under 1MB/s and prevent that from happening. But I have a 60 mpbs connection and can't even profit from it ... I never had such problems. I would also like to solve this problem without reinstalling Windows because I heard erasing data from SSD's is bad (?) .

I use POWER LAN TOPCOM 85mbps ( internet through electricity ) if it helps. I tried reinstalling drivers of network card, even installed drivers for the TOPCOM. No results !

I'm desperate to fix this ask for any extra information you guys might need.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a home network with 3 computers and an Xbox360 and for years now I have never had a problem, but just recently the longer my modem goes without being turned off and back on the slower my internet gets, it applies to all the computers on the network and it has become quite a problem, the modem is a 2Wire2700HG-E Gateway that I got from Telus when I subscribed to their High speed enhanced.

(example day 1 I have 350kb/s download speeds and day 2 it will be as low as 40-120kb/s and it just gets lower and lower until I turn the modem off and back on)

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I have Cox communications, i should be getting 100Mbs, modem/router hardware is all current.
I am not running any streaming devices ( i am going to, this is why i am verifying my connection)
these tests are from a hardwired PC:
Running the google speed test through M Lab i get various inconsistent results ...last four test, 30 seconds apart yielded:
18.1 /5.66
Ookla results are consistent:
19 ms

60.34 Mbps

5.55 Mbps
is there a program i can run that will monitor and graft my speed over time that i can show to a tech to prove these speeds?

A:How to monitor Internet connection speed over time

If you register on the Ookla web-site it will create a very neat graphic log of your performance which can be copied. You could, for example, do a series of tests across the span of a day which would show how your performance changes with local loading. Or a series say once a week which would show variation over time.

not an expert overclocker by any means so play nice.
Here's my problem; trying to squeeze some extra juice outta my old P3 700 on a cusl2-c by overclocking it. So far it seems stable at every speed I've tried and heat isn't an issue. But when I try to raise the clock speed to 749 or above ATI's SMARTGART cuts my AGP bus to 2x from 4, which kinda defeats the purpose. Any idea on why this is? I thought it might just be finnicky bus timings but my bios has 749s' pci speed at 35, which is the same as 735s'. And I'm running Crucial ram that's actually pc133 so it should be able to handle anything within reason.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I just signed up for Comcast cable internet. I am going to be splitting the cable up for two computers by a router. The computers aren't going to be networked, just both are going to have cable running to them. Will this cut the speed in half because of the two computers, or will it still be the same speed as if I were to only have it hooked up to one?

A:Router cuts speed in half?

same speed.. unless you are using the other.. for Internet access at the time you are playing..if you are playing a game.. and another user gets on the computer and starts to DL "whatever"/check email/stuff.. then you will see a difference in your connection on the server you are on.

Unless you have a mega nice Cisco or something along those lines.. to do load balancing..

I have a subscription to Comcast Cable, and a D-Link DI-604 Router (not wireless). Yesterday I hooked up the router (not to another computer, just wanted to see what would happen to my primary computer). To make the story short, the speed went from about 3400Kb/s to around 1600Kb/s. I tried it over and over again, unhooking the router, going directly from modem to computer, and got the same results every time. Are routers supposed to do this or is it fualty? If this is normal, is there a better way of "splitting" the connection between 2 computers without losing that much speed?? It is noticable when i download files, etc...

So I moved in December to a very small town. I got Cass Communications cable internet 15mb dl for $100 a month which is a terrible price for the speed but it's the best I got here. It was very very consistent internet, always right around 15-17 speeds with no packet loss and was great for gaming/streaming. Well now they have doubled the speeds to 30mb dl and it's great during the day when no ones using it but come 8 pm central it is absolute garbage. Without fail at night it slows to a crawl.

I don't know what to do at this point. I have contacted their tech guy and told him and he said their were some noise issues or something and that it should be better but it's not. From 8 till 12 am it's useless, streams buffer and gaming is impossible since your ping is about triple what you're used to and fluctuates so much you can't even tell what's happening in multiplayer. I have contacted him again asking him what we can do to fix this and he said "Your modem is on probation so we can look at it" or something and now he's ignoring anymore emails i've sent. The only other option I have is a 6mb DSL service that's pure crap too. Is their anything I can do?

A:Internet terrible during peak hours since upgrade!

I don't understand what "modem is on probation" means. If it is your modem then investigate to see if it is a problem. Is it DOCSIS 1, 2 or 3? I'm not sure what the actual maximum downloads for those specs are (you can look them up on the web), but an old (five years or more) or DOCSIS 1 modem may well be the issue. If it is the ISP's modem then you need to get them to investigate/solve any modem issue.

Otherwise there is nothing you can do except keep pestering your ISP. Speaking from the experience of having ISP issues for months and months (now working fine for three months) use various channels. In addition to calling there may be (sometimes difficult to find) ways to chat or email. If you don't get anywhere with a given chat session try again the next day because the rep will almost guaranteed be somebody different.

This issue doesn't happen very often, but enough to find it annoying. Basically some times when I boot up my computer the audio works fine for about half an hour but then it randomly cuts out. I have found out that unplugging and replugging my headphones sometimed works but after maybe 10 minutes it happens again. The only way I know how to fix this issue is by restarting.

Anyone know a fix to this issue? Thanks

Recently moved into a new apartment and reconfigured my setup, and my PC (Windows 7), has been having a hard time reliably getting internet speed.  Am wondering if my system is infected with something that might be hogging resources or preventing good speeds from occuring.  I've recently run Ad-Aware Antivirus, Avira Virus, and Malwarebytes software in an attempt to clean things up but am not sure if they did the job or not. Hey all
I'm wondering if anyone can help with this one. around a once a day for the last few days my Ethernet connection between my PC and router (Virgin Media Hub 3 in case your wondering) cuts out for around 30-60 seconds comes back on but instead of receiving a 1 Gbps connection it only receives 100 Mbps. Until a few weeks ago this would have been a non issue since I had a 100mbps internet connection but I have since taken a free speed upgrade to 150 Mbps. This isn't an urgent issue since unplugging the cable from the router sorts the problem out but it is annoying so any advice would be appreciated. I have also posted a screenshot the network detail window as well.

Hello. I have a major PC problem...probably ought to shoot it! I have an HP pavilion 533w, running Windows XP, with 256 mb ram, 2.0 intel celeron processor, 60 gb hard drive. A few days ago, when I tried to boot the computer up in the morning, it would cut off after just a little while...the first day twice, then it worked ok. The next day it did that over and over, all day. I tried to do a recovery. It stayed on for the recovery, then while doing the "new" computer startup, it shut off again. I never could get it to finish the start up...now it just hangs on "please wait" on the xp splash screen, then cuts off. I tried changing out some of the parts (I had an old computer that I took parts off of). When I changed the hard drive, BINGO...the computer works with the new hard drive....so I guess I found out the problem. The old hard drive is 20 gb, and runs windows 98. The problem with that is, it won't recognize the cdrom, the video driver (only shows 16 colors), etc. I can't connect to the internet to see if I can download the drivers, because I have to use the cdrom to set up my cable modem. SOMEBODY, please advise me of what to do about this problem!!! If anybody has any suggestions on fixing the computer with the original hard drive, it would be TERRIFIC! If not, what can I do to fix the old one I replaced it with! I very much would appreciate your help! Thank you!

A:Computer cuts off every time it's turned on

Hello and Welcome to TSF

You can try a repair install. It may solve your problems if the hard drive is not on its way out.
You may want to check the integrity of the drive before proceeding. Run the hard drives manufactures Diagnostic Utility.

If the drive comes back with now errors proceed with the Repair
Follow these instructions.

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install.

Hey guys,

Ok, here's the problem. I've been using said computer for about 4 years. Never really had a problem. A few weeks ago, I got a new XPS 420 to replace it. So the old computer was left around for about a week before i moved it to another room and set it up. It booted the same as always and was running for 5 hours when it turn off. No "windows is shutting down", just a click, and then nothing. Since then, most of the time it boots okay (Sometimes it gets stuck on startup and i need to switch it off at the back.) but when its on for an hour or two, it turns off again. I checked the connections and noticed the the monitor port was moving a bit. I opened up the case, and it had come unstuck from the screw, but was still plugged in fully. Any clues. (By the way, this happens when i boot in XP and Vista.

Computer is a Medion from ALDI (I'm so ashamed )
Radeon 7000
Intel pentium 4
1gb RAM
OS: XP/Vista Ultimate

Sorry, i dont know the rest of the spec, because i'm not on that computer at the moment. If you need more info, i'll boot it up and check.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Well...I'm using the Window Vista Home Professional Edition so I don't know if that has to do with anything but for some reason, after I surf the web for a certain amount of time (or when I change websites quickly), either firefox loses connection to the internet or the computer itself loses connection to the internet. When switching back to IE and surfing the web for a while, the computer itself seems to not send any signal to the internet. I can access AIM but when trying to go online to play a game or surf the web, I can't access it.
The only way to solve this problem is that I restart the computer. Though when the computer seems to not be able to connect to the internet, it takes the computer an awfully long time to restart (including logging off and what not) - 2+ minutes.

I have also constantly scanned the computer using AVG,Avast, or the Windows Security scan thingy. This also includes defragging the computer and checking the disk (scan for and recovery of bad sectors).

I have posted this before in the infected area and since I have checked the infected area (in which the person led me here), I was hoping if there is someone who could solve this.

Thank you and any help would be appreciated.

For sometime now and it is getting really annoying my internet connection will randomly cut out for about 10-30 seconds then come back on without notifcation. It is getting really annoying because of the fact that i am an active gamer and i get cut out of the middle of a online game. It happens to all my computers in the house even my consoles and Ipod touch. I'm not too sure if it is maybe an overflow of computers on my network because i can sometimes have 2 or 3 computers and 2 ipod touches on the same network all at one time. My internet speed is about 512kbps. My router which is a linksys WAG 45g could maybe be the source of the problem. Im thinking about buying a new one because i hate getting NAT problems on my xbox 360 and is unfixable on my router. My problem is related to connection to the internet. I have a Presario X1000 series notebook and I can connect fine to the internet using both the soft modem and ethernet connection... but after about 3 minutes each time the 'page cannot be displayed' standard screen comes up when I try to follow a new link. I can restart and get another 3 minutes out of it, or I can keep using XP's 'repair connection' and get even less extra time on the net. Oh ya one more note - when I am getting the 'page cannot be displayed' error and I look under the networking panel in XP I am still 'connected' to the internet, and the icon showing info transfers is still active in the taskbar, sending and receiving.

I recently had my computer returned to me after repairs because I banged it after falling off my bike so I think there is an easy answer to this question... that there is physical damage to my modem. I guess my soft modem and ethernet hookup are one unit cause the plugs are right next to each other but I'm not totally sure.

Anyways, I'd like to think there's no physical damage cause the tech guy told me he tested it out fine but I have my doubts... I doubt he tested it and found that it cut out after a short time. Could this be anything besides me needing a new modem? I thought at first it was a conflict with the XP firewire 1394 connection so I disabled it, but same problem exists. Brutal. I've tried many different connec... Read more

I suspect I still have a problem because my reboots take so long (there's a black screen for 20 seconds or longer which isn't normal) and my internet load time is slow. Hi... I'm using a mobile Internet dongle which is great except it cuts the connection if I don't send a web request of some kind frequently enough. So, I'm looking for a website or a utility which requests a small (1 or 2 kb) download every 10 to 20 seconds or so... just to keep the web server on it's toes.

Does anyone know of a suitable website or downloadable utility? Thanks.

Hi. I'm running XP and it shows that I am connected to the Internet. It will work for a period of time, but after a while, I won't be able to surf the net or play online games. Although if you check the connection status, it says I am connected.

Why is this, how can I fix it? I already tried setting static IP too.

Also, if I wait for a long time (like 1 hour) the internet will work again.

Thanks for your help.

My internet keeps cutting out every 30 mins or so. This is really annoying as i keep getting disconnected from battlefield and skype. I had a virgin media router and the wireless would randomly turn off for anywhere between 2-20 mins, so i am now using that virgin media router as a modem and im using another wireless router.

Hi I was just wondering why my internet connection cuts out during thunderstorms.. I mean it makes sense sort of but other internet connections always work during storms ??

Today for instance at about 2-3pm the internet (broadband 1.5mb) cuts out for about half a minute, then goes back on for half a minute and keeps doing that - on/off.. the funny thing is I can predict when theres going to be a storm because it always starts cutting out a couple hours before one starts. It finally started working properly at 10pm tonight, although it still cuts out for short periods occasionally. This has happened quite a few times before. It only happens on days when there is heavy rain or storms. Is this normal???

A:Internet Cuts Out During Thunderstorms

No but expected. I have cable HSI. The squirls love to chew on the insulation on the coax. I just had COX stretch a new line in May. If you have VOIP it will also effect you telephone service.
I helpped a niehbor install DSL lite (256/128) and he had a similar problem. The lines were so old, corrosion got in the wire and slow his speed to less than 20kbs. BellSouth put in a new service box and I ran new Cat5 to his computer room and he is at top speed.
If you have your ISP come out make sure they are only testing the line and not working on it, if you don't have an "inside wire service agreement". It could be $80+. If it is inside wiring you should be able to do it your self. If it's the service box back to the pole it's there puppy.
Let us know how it turns out.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5520 with Windows 7, connected wirelessly via a Comcast Technicolor gateway. My wifi will randomly cut out, though all I have to do is disconnect/reconnect to the wifi network to fix it. It seems YouTube exacerbates it, though it happens without YouTube as well. I have confirmed that is an issue with my computer, as other devices that connect to the network do not experience this problem.

When the internet cuts out, half the time Windows will not show there's anything wrong, and the other half an exclamation will appear over the wifi signal saying there's an error. In both cases, the signal strength is still fine.

I have tried the following (at least these are the ones I can remember):
every suggestion on this thread (related to resetting winsock protocol)
disabling anti-virus software
scanning for viruses with Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot
different browsers
disabling add-ons/plugins in browser (I use Firefox)
disabling all hardware acceleration
disallowing the computer to turn off network devices to conserve power
updating drivers (I am fairly certain I have the most up-to-date drivers, though the Dell System Analysis app does not work on my computer. This app seems like the most foolproof way to be 100% certain, but I'd rather not spend $30 unless absolutely necessary.)

The only other thing I can think of trying is a Windows reinstall, but I really don't want to do that. Here's my ipconfig /all and some pings when... Read more

A:Help, internet connection cuts off/on

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Ad-Aware? SE Personal Edition
*Note* For Ad-AwareSE also install the VX2 Addon Cleaner To run this tool once Adaware is updated click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK" , then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.
Spybot Search & Destroy

Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)

Please go to at least two of these sites and run an online Virus Scan.
Be sure to have the AutoFix box(s) checked.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible.

Also, the internet comes back on if I plug it out, and then in.

Greetings, I will simply post my reddit post I made about this it has all the info I have:

"Greetings everyone, Im not sure if this is the right place to ask, but here it is. Yesterday I started experiencing this problem, every 5 minutes or so, the light on my modem wich indicates if theres a net connection or not turns red until I restart it. So I cant really do much online anymore. Its been like this today too, but it doesnt seem like it was happening while I was in school, because the light remained green and if red shows up it doesnt normaly go back to green, ever. My mate says it could be a problem with the adsl splitter or its cable oxidation. How can I check for these causes and how can I fix it?

EDIT: Update, its happening every 10-20mins now, not sure why, but Im waiting for the next one to occur and I'll see what the event viewer says.

EDIT: Update 2, "The IP address lease for the Network Card with network address 0xD8CB8A1D4476 has been denied by the DHCP server (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message)." - everytime my connection cuts, I get this message in the event viewer. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!"

As of yesterday my internet keeps cutting off every 2 or so minutes, it doesn't really affect my using the internet, it just means i have to click a link twice to get the page to load. But it means MSN is logging out and in constantly, and it means if i'm trying to watch videos on web players like 4oD or iPlayer the video will play for a few minutes and then cut off. The only thing out of the ordinary that has occurred is that on MSN someone sent me a link with a picture on it, I dont talk to this person so knew it had to have been a virus so i just closed the conversation box without accepting the so called image, yet since about that time my internet has gone weird. I don't think it is a network problem, I am on the universities halls of residence network and no-one else is having any problems. I've included a hijackthis report, hopefully someone can tell me what is wrong and hopefully help me rectify the problem.

Also while doing the HijackThis report i got a message saying "For some reason your system denied access to the Hosts file. If any Hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this". I don't know if this will affect your helping me, I hope not.

How recently did you install the new wireless router? If it was within the last 10 days, you are likely to be within the ADSL Max 'training' period (assuming you are in the UK on ADSL not cable).

Historically, it sounds like you may have a line problem or something locally affecting your line stability, eg. bad filter, interference from an appliance or outside lighting, etc..

Can you access your router logs? There maybe some clues in them.

Good luck,

For gaming online, I would not like to use a wireless connection, especially if it has security enabled, this only adds to your 'lag', giving longer ping times.

Hio, so my internet is beautiful and gives me speeds of 200mbps while streaming, downloading, or surfing the web. When I try to play a game online such as rocket league or over watch my internet suddenly goes to .1 mbps and the games that require an online connection are unplayable. Also, I am unable to use the internet on the computer while playing a game. Other devices on the network are not affected. I updated graphics and network adapter drivers and cannot think of what could be the root of this issue. Thanks for your time guys

My mother's computer kicks her off the internet every 10 mins. I have since unhooked her computer and connected mine to the internet and can stay on line indefinately. By the way, she has a Packard Bell, 333 mhz, 56K, 64MB. I have checked the settings, and everything seems to be set right, including setting the idle time before cut off which I set to "never", tried lowering the speed to see if that worked and even called the internet provider tech and haven't found what the problem is. Consequently, my computer is set to the highest connection speed. I would also like to know how or if (regardless of my mother's problem) I can network our two computers so that we can both have the internet and if this problem will affect my internet svc if we do network? I have a Compaq Presario, 500 Mhz, 56K, 64MB. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Well like the title explains my internet just stops working every few minutes and then magicly fixes itself en works just fine, only to be repeated. I did get a message from AVG that I got 3 trojan virusses after some obscure download but it said it removed them all. When I did a full, slow scan of the entire computer all it could find were some tracking cookies. The same when I tried Ad-Aware. These are the only virus and spyware scanners I have by the way (all the free versions). I also have ZoneAlarm. When I run a connection test with MSN messenger it tells me there's a problem with my DNS, it can't resolve IP-adresses. If I try again a random amount of time later it's fixed.
Does anyone have any idea what's causing this?

I installed Spybot - search and destroy and ran a scan. It found some malware and spyware and successfully removed it all but no improvement in the problem.
