CPU never idles but taskmanager etc. show 0% CPU usage

Q: CPU never idles but taskmanager etc. show 0% CPU usage

Just recently I noticed that the CPU is going all the time (The bottom of the laptop is very hot to the touch; and I can hear the CPU fan constantly going). Even when I get the CPU usage down < 5%, I can still hear it. Also, when I disconnect it from the outlet; the battery drains FAST. In the past it the laptop quiets down and cools off if left idle for awhile, so this is something that is happening recently.

After noticing it, I ran a scan with MBAM - it found and removed a few Malware.Trace registry keys but that didn't seem to help.

Anyway, thanks to everyone in advance for all your help (It really is appreciated)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi,

some days ago, when analyzing another problem, i stumbled upon a fatal error in the CPU performance display in the Microsoft task manager. I wrote a little bit about this problem in the following post.

https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2269972-weird-4gbit-s-nic-limit-without-rss?page=1#entry-8853...

In summary: for me, the task manager as well as the resource monitor and the performance monitor do not show the correct CPU utilization.

Here is an example.

I start a test and the CPU display of core 0 climbs to 100% in Task Manager.

The Resource Monitor shows the same thing.

Only the performance monitor shows the correct load, but the display it "inconsistent".

The processor load is normally shown up to max. 100%, but my core 0 run according to the performance monitoring with up to 120%. ??

The Process Explorer shows the correct utilization of my core 0.

HWiNFO also shows the load correctly.

I suddenly had the following apprehension.
If you cannot correctly measure the utilization of a system, so it's not possible to control its performance properly. ??

So I immediately opened a support ticket at Microsoft by telephone and then described the problem accordingly by email.

A few hours later I received an email with the following text. "Dear Mr. Fuchs, your support case has been closed."

???
That can not be true. ?
Dear Microsoft, determining and displaying the CPU loa... Read more

Hi,

I have a small problem with my Windows 7. Here's what happened:

Yesterday, my pc was running fine. I turned it on at 10am and it was running well. My sister ordered a new router so I set it up for her (AirPort Extreme). I installed the utility for it, was a simple setup for me. After that, I connect to it wirelessly and I see that windows update has a few security updates. They install as I turn off the pc. I then turn it back on a few hrs later and notice that when it reaches the login screen, it takes a few secs for it to load. This is unusual being that the days before it was always ready to receive input. So I login, get the welcome screen, and my desktop screen. Taskbar loads as usual, however I can't get anything to show up when I click on it. I think at first that its Comodo (is in training mode) so I close it out. Still nothing. I then press ctrl+alt+delete. Nothing. I then press it rapidly to see what happens. After a few mins, my screen turns black. A message then shows up that ctrl+alt+delete has been pressed but due to something that it won't show up. Had to press either the power button or esc to leave the screen. Safe mode works. I do a system restore back to when the windows update and to the installation of the router. I scanned and haven't found anything yet. Today, my pc looks like its running fine but its still taking a few secs on the login screen and the desktop still idles. I'm going to contact HP to see what they can do b... Read more

Greetings, been away awhile but have a busy CPU question. At idle, one of my CPUs (dual core AMD 3800) oscillates. It continues to do this even when I shut down all user processes. Performance seems ok. I don't understand why it is doing this. I will attach a .gif screen capture. Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions on diagnosing.

A:CPU Usage in taskmanager

Did you try sorting the process list by CPU usage and seeing which ones figure at the top?

Use an advanced process monitor like Process Explorer from Sysinternals. It will show you system processes too.

Most likely it is your firewall or antivirus hogging the machine. Are you a Norton or Zonealarm user?

Accidentially I pressed some unknown key combination/sequence and the result was that the
title bar and the menu bar of the well known built-in Task Manager was suddenly hidden.

Only the processes are shown in window. I cannot even switch to the other tabs.

With which key can I tell Win 7 to re-show title bar and menu bar?

Thank you

I would like to be able to monitor my cpu usage and physical ram usage in the task bar, much like how windows 7 has a desktop gadget.
Google search has told me to use task manager, and to check the "hide when minimized" option, and it'll display the square green and black meter.
But for some reason when I tried to add a shortcut to task manager to my startup folder, that little graph never shows up anymore.

Also in the past, when I installed windows media center on my desktop, there was a little icon added that was black/green/yellow/red that monitored cpu usage. I can't seem to find that..
So does anyone know of a program that can monitor cpu usage AND physical ram? I'd appreciate it.

A:Show cpu and ram usage in taskbar?

Goto C:\Windows\System32 and right click the taskmgr.exe and create a shortcut.

Cut and paste that on your desktop.

When you activate it and then minimize it, you get the little green icon in the Task bar.

Hi!

I bought a new desktop last year to run high-end software used for my degree; I installed Windows 8 on it, having got on with it on my laptop. I did notice though, after venturing into the Task Manager, that my CPU usage was at 100%. All the time. Even when idle. In fact, resource monitor says it's working at 108% load! I thought this was rather odd, so investigated further:

It appears that task manager divides the 100% usage proportionally between the processes using the CPU. So for example if Firefox, Word and Notepad were using 5%, 3% and 2% respectively, Task Manager would report 50%, 30% and 20% usage. I was initially concerned that my processor was going to take some serious damage to its life expectancy if it was being constantly loaded - but the performance monitor in Norton Anti-virus shows the CPU load to be much, much lower - where I'd expect it to be.

My system is an 3.4GHz i7, with 16GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 8 Pro. People have suggested a fresh install, but it's an almighty pain backing everything up and re-installing VPN servers and software through various security measures, so I'd rather not...

Any clues?

Hi everyone,
I was wondering where all my hard drive space has gone today, and I wondered if a program that could show you what was on the hard drive existed. Kind of like a pie chart of your hard drive - each segment belonging to different categories.
Does something like this exist? It would be great to know where all the space has gone so I can delete some rubbish.

Win 8.1/64 with all the latest fisxes, I am on a slow satellite internet connection (Starband) and do almost all our downloading from midnight to 6 am because that window does not count against our bandwidth usage. Last night I downloaded about 450mb between midnight and 6 am and the network usage app reported zero usage between midnight and 6 am but reported it all in the 6am window which is a problem for me. This showed at 6:04 am which makes it physically impossible.
Yesterday I did the registry hack to remove the 20% system reserved bandwidth in order to speed up the network and wonder if this could of had an impact on the false recording?
All suggestions appreciated.

A:Network Usage app show false data

I also recently set my wifi connection to a metered connection to save bandwidth and wondering if that can cause the weirdness with the Network Usage app. Now the network app only flashes briefly and disappears when started. Did an uninstall and reinstalled from app store and the same weirdness occurs where if just flashes briefly when selected then goes away. Also when I click on estimated usage or reset under my network icon in settings nothing happens. The registry key for viewing network usage is 1.

Win 7 Pro 64-bit. On reboot, I want Task Manager to start automatically, as early as possible, ideally in the Processes tab, showing processes from all users, and sorted by CPU usage (with max CPU usage on top).

If that's too specific, then I just want Task Manager to start automatically on reboot, as early as possible, regardless of its focus.

How can I do this?

If it's helpful, I have autoruns, but I've never used it to make a new startup program.

Thanks.

A few days ago the system went sideways and now I have very high (but fluctuating) CPU usage and memory usage.  Processes in Task Manager  are running wild and some are showing multiple instances where I wouldn't have expect them to be so. Using Chrome to make this post but IE repeatedly crashes and allowing the crash to search for a resolution to the problem does not produce results. Details have shown issues with various dll files.

I've temporarily removed avast. Installed and run malwarebytes, adware, jrt, ccleaner. Did a scan disc. All these come back clean.

Thinking this is a windows issue but not sure where to start.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Hello chasingstillness
Please start with this program.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (A.K.A. MBAR) from HERE
Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain.
If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

I think the problem is gdrv.sys. I already uninstalled Gigabyte Energy Saver app and I thought I solved the problem. PC was up for one week. But this morning there was a BSOD again. I must mention that BSOD occours when PC idles for couple of hours.

Not too much information in one dmp file and the driver causing it is un-named. This was a memory exception but the driver is inconclusive

I would run memtest

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program.

Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Firefox or Deer Park?

FF does sometimes labour toward the end usually (I believe) because it finds faults with the update process server side, and sometimes it cannot establish a link at all. For me it always finds a fault with BBCode Extra.

Deer Park program updates (for now) always fail because the update address is wrong! I have it somewhere, I'll add it here if/when I find it.

I'm not sure if the topic states my problem accurately, but it seems to be the case. I booted up my computer today and left it unattended because my internet was down, and when I came back, the system was loaded into BIOS. I wasn't sure what caused this, so I let my system go idle again shortly afterwards purposely and I received an error saying there was a problem with dfrgNTFS. Hey guys

Whenever my PC is idle for a while (haven't timed it but I think it's about 30 min.) it will switch to the blue login screen. I've never actually seen the login screen since I don't use a password, but I'm assuming it is. Blue screen, shows my name and icon, ease of use button on bottom left, etc. Anyways, I don't really want Windows to DO this, so can someone tell me where I can change those settings? I already tried changing all of the Power settings but it still does it. Oh, BTW I do not use a screen saver either. Thanks.

Strat

A:Windows idles to login screen

Only things I can think of are the screensaver settings and power options.

Screensaver:
If you tick the box On resume, display logon screen, Windows shows the logon screen every time screensaver is stopped by moving the pointer or pressing a key.

Power Options:
If you choose Yes in Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings> Require a password on wakeup, Windows shows logon screen when resuming from sleep or hibernate. This also happens even you have no password.

Try another AV program after uninstalling Norton, see any difference in Temps. Use HWMonitor or any temperature monitoring utility to keep an eye on the temps. How old is your laptop? if it's more than a year old might as well check the fans for any dust and blow them out with a can of compressed air.
It helps if you fill up your system specs.

Hi everyone,

New to the forums here, so thanks to everyone up front:

My i5-750 that I OC to 3.5 ghz idles at about 37 - 43 C using RealTemp. My Lian Li case has a large fan in front blowing air in, two on top sucking air out, and one in the back also sucking out air.

I have a Noctura fan for the CPU with both fans, one pushing air in and one sucking air out, so I'm thinking my CPU should be quite cool. No matter what, my fan speeds
stay the same. I use the ASUS Fan Expert, and tried SpeedFan (or something like that) but my RPMs for the fans stay the same. I'm thinking I don't have the fans
plugged into the right fan ports on the MOBO. I should be able to increase the speed of the Noctura and the main fan in front, right? When I turn on turbo on FanExpert absolutely
nothing happens. In BIOS, all the fan settings are set to enabled. I'm really at a lose here. Could it be that PSU isn't strong enough?

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!

BTW: My entire system I built about 6 months ago.

Thank you all

Lian Li case, W7 64-bit, ASUS P7P55D-PRO, i5-750 OC 3.5 ghz, Noctura heatsink, Radeon 5870, Antec 750 PSU, DDR3 1600 mhz.

A:CPU idles high - fans not working right?

When you're overclocked, having a cool CPU is pretty hard to acheive.

About changing fan speeds, you can't exactly change it OVER the spec, so if the RPMs correspond with the fan's spec, thats as fast as you can go. Not sure what would happen if you overvoltage it via some other method though, not that I'd know how to wire your PSU to provide more than 12V.

Might want to re-seat your heatsink, that might help. Make sure to use thermalpaste.

Why hello again! Feels like I am on here often. For a reason my computers like to BSOD.

I was working on the computer last night then went to bed. Came back to PC this morning to a unresponsive mouse. Rebooted and got a BSOD once it hit the desktop. Rebooted.

Got it to work for about 10mins. BSOD again. Rebooted. Scanned with Malwarebytes and MSE quick scan; nothing found. Started to read about it on my cellphone and read it was affecting idling computers so I started a full Antivirus scan because it will take a while.

NO BSOD AS THE SCAN RUNS RIGHT NOW.

Tried analyzing the dump files with WinDbg but I dont really know what I am doing so I'll let you guys handle this.

I included here the DM Log Collector file it saved. Hope you guys have everything needed. Waiting on your reply. I will start a new antivirus Scan when this one ends so the computer stays alive!

Thanks.

A:BSOD when computer idles - 0x101

While waiting I did some research on my side. I noticed during the day that my mouse was acting weird. Side buttons werent working and the wheel wasnt working either. Thought it was because I was downloading its new driver while operating the mouse. (BSOD started before I updated its driver today).

I actived the Driver Verifier and checked all the boxes but Microsofts, Macromedia and Unknowns then rebooted. BSOD occured before loading the desktop 3 times in a row but with the different error than the original one. Google it on my phone. Happened to be the mouse driver that was faulty.

Booted in safemode to deactive Driver Verifier then booted normally. Completed the mouse driver update. So far so good, no BSOD even when just navigating the web. I'll come back tomorrow once the computer will have idled overnight.

Hi,

Sounds like your BIOS settings are whacko. I would clear CMOS and see if that helps your cause.

Why do you think that you have a memory leak for, are you having problems?
I see nothing out of the ordinary in your pic.

Sorry for the long title. I was guided to this site by hijack this. Many thanks to Buckeye Sam for removing the viruses from my computer. The viruses are gone, but my original problem was 100% cpu usage, and that problem still exists. I'm trying to run Adobe AIR to take an online real estate class and it continues to max out usage and lag badly. I noticed that watching videos after a few minutes has the same result. I only have 512 of RAM on this older Dell inspiron 5100, but I've never had any problems before. I have reinstalled the drivers disk, gone to microsoft for updates and defragged the disk. I have plenty of disk space and apparently no viruses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jay

A:Missing icon images on desktop. Black icons sometimes show up. 100% cpu usage while watching vids or using adobe AIR player.

What process is using all the CPU?

Go to hardware, find your networkcard rightclick, properties, and go to energy tab, set "can save power" option off.

Good luck

Hello,

While searching online for a solution to my BSODs, I came across Windows 10 Forums and thought I'd ask you guys! I recently built my first computer to use for when I work remotely. Everything was great to start, but after a short time (a few days to a week or two), my computer started to BSOD every single time it idled. I have wiped everything and installed Windows 10 Pro at least 3 times only to get the same issue after about a week. I then tried Windows 10 Enterprise and my computer has started BSODing again after the same amount of time passed. For the first few days after each Windows installation everything works great. Here are all the components I used to build my computer:
GIGABYTE GA-H170M-D3H (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel H170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core i5-6600K 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 1151 91W BX80662I56600K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 530

SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-75E500B/AM

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) Desktop Memory Model CMK16GX4M2A2133C13

I ran the dm_log_collector.exe from this site and attached the .zip it generated (13 .dmp files since 12/1/16!). Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide that will help in the troubleshooting process.

Would this file be helpful? It exceeds 2.0 MB so I will need to use another service to upload it.

Hello,

I'm brand new to the message board and have been experiencing BSOD messages for about a week. In the BSOD it said something about; "PAGE_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" Also here were some error codes it gave off too in the BSOD.

Technical Information:

STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFFFFF87FFFCCBA53, 0x0000000000000008, 0xFFF87FFFCCBA53, 0x0000000000000005)
Here are some of my hardware specs:Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit w/Service Pack 1
Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40Ghz
Asus P5N-D (socket 775) motherboard
8GB DDR2 @ 399Mhz
Nvidia GeForce 8800GT 768MB

If there's anymore hardware specs you need to better troubleshoot the issue. Then let me know.
Thank you in advance!

A:BSOD after the machine idles for a while, error 0x00000050

hello,

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA this is a verry hard one to troubleshoot as it's not sure it's being caused by the driver the reports mentions. This can be caused by harddisks who have errors (run chkdsk tocheck this) or some antivirus software or faulty memory (check with windows memory diagnostics) Diagnosing memory problems on your computer

Also is your computer setup to show hidden devices ? sometimes when you uninstall software traces (drivers etc) from that software are not removed right click computer and choose properties then advanced system settings then envirementvariables under systemvariables add

name = devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
value = 1

in the devices manager you now should have a new menuitem under view "show nopresent devices" or something like that those that are grayed out have a problem

Caution

do not remove anything unless you know what it is ......
