BIOS: Can access BIOS utility, but cannot change settings.

Q: BIOS: Can access BIOS utility, but cannot change settings.

This is my first post here, so hi to everyone.
I just got an ASUS X401a Notebook and I want to use a flash drive to boot from Linux.
I need to change the sequence in the BIOS so that the flash drive is first choice to boot from.
I have no problem accessing the BIOS utility, but it allows me to alter only some settings. Those in blue colored font I can change those in black font I cannot. What drive to boot from first is in black and not adjustable.
I used command line to work as admin and I also set up a password for admin in the BIOS to access the BIOS utility, but still no go; some things are allowed to be changed some aren't.

Any help is appreciated.

Preferred Solution: BIOS: Can access BIOS utility, but cannot change settings.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer is so messed up Version 8.1 . I first noticed that I had a problem with Kaspersky. It said my license was unable to verify and to update data base to solve. It wont let me update. In fact it wont even let me uninstall, and secondly I cant download ANYTHING off the internet. My main problem is OFFICE keeps freezing and I need that program it also says there is a problem with my license and I have not been able to fix it it just freezes. So I thought I will download open office, but as I mentioned I cant download anything when I click run nothing happens when I click save it says corrupt or unreadable file. I thought no problem I will just hit F2 (yes I have tried hitting every single key after this and nothing) and enter bios screen and recover from my USB but do you think F2 (or any other key takes takes me there, no. Products like Kaspersky, Office, I have paid for etc say they are unlicensed which they are not. Anything I try to download, anything, like a new virus program will not work. I can't download, I cant even get into Change my PC settings it just freezes when I click this. I have had people try and trouble shoot this, Kaspersky has not gotten back to me and everyone is telling me stuff I cant do. I cant download, I cant access bios, I cant even access Change my PC settings. Ready to hear all the generic "it should" or "you should be able to" I have found a few people on other forums with the problem and I have yet to see a fix.

Hi Guys
I restored an image created with Macrium Reflect on my wife's computer (Custom build with Asus P8Z77-V LX mother board) and everything went fine until rebooting when i got to the "Please press DEL or F2 to enter UEFI BIOS settings" then everything stopped.
I have tried F2 DEL F8 F12 just about all the F combinations and nothing works, I have two SSD drives one with Win7 Pro and one with Win10 Pro (not connected at the same time) and neither of them will boot up.
I have tried changing the jumper pins from 1 and 2 to 2 and 3 for 10 sec to clear the RTC Ram in CMOS then returned then to 1 and 2 and tried rebooting...no change so i removed the battery and repeated the jumper pin swap then reinstalled the battery and still no change, cannot get passed press DEL or F2 to access the BIOS settings.
I even downloaded the latest BIOS and updater as shown and put them on a USB flash drive together and tried the Macrium Rescue disk, and still nothing happened and it will not open the BIOS maybe i got it all wrong ?
I was hoping someone here might know how to put it right, i am out of idea's and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good evening!
A week ago I reinstalled Windows 7 in EFI mode on my laptop, and now I've got this problem: whenever I turn on my computer after a shutdown, the BIOS says "System Resuming" instead of "Press F2 to enter settings". This makes impossible for me to access BIOS settings. Previously, my BIOS used to say "System Resuming" only after a hibernation. The weird fact is that - as far as I remember - this thing started happening only after a few days.
Can you help me?
Thanks in advance :-)

A:I can't access BIOS settings because BIOS assumes Windows is resuming

Try doing a shutdown command from a CMD window, or Start button / Run
The command is shutdown /s

See if entering the command manually makes a difference in how it starts up

We recently replaced a system board in a Dell Latitude E6410. However, the person who typed in the serial number originally made a typo and now the machine reports in our tracking systems with the wrong info. Is there a utility we can can download to change the service tag info in the BIOS? I would hate to replace the system board all over again for something that could take 5 minutes instead of 1 hour.

A:Utility to change a service tag listed in the BIOS?

I have tried the Dell asset.com utility but it appears it is too old and does not work on the newer Dell laptop models.

I am guessing that something quite wrong was done in 2.20 (and it persists into 2.21). There was no such errant behavior with 2.19, as I've confirmed by reinstalling 2.19.  Works perfectly and boots promptly and the BIOS Setup utility works lickity-split with 2.19, just like it always has.  But with the install of 2.20 the behavior changed drastically.
Looking at the README for BIOS 2.20 this definitely seems like the culprit:
[Problem fixes]- Fixed an issue where fan might rotated with max speed due to not reading CPU   temperature correctly.- Fixed an issue where system might not boot to OS when attached an external monitor   and its USB3 devices.- Fixed an issue where network boot might happened at reboot after resume from suspend   by Wake On LAN.
At first I thought I had blown the BIOS update, since my screen was simply black for what seemed like 1-2 minutes after displaying the Lenovo logo and "press ENTER to interrupt" message.  I pressed ENTER repeatedly but nothing happened, for a long time.  Eventually, the hard drive activity LED on the P70 started flashing, and seemingly almost 2 minutes later, the machine came to life and boot process continued normally.
Then, once I entered the BIOS, I used the right-arrow key to navigate through the tabs.  No problem until I got to the Security tab and then pressed right-arrow one more time to navigate into the Boot tab... and it hung!  Didn't go ri... Read more

Hello there, i'll get straight to the point.

I'm not amazing with computers so bare with me. I have a HP DV2799, and although I can access BIOS (shows as phoenixBios), there is little that I can change.

I'm trying to change my HDD settings to a solution for my other problem - I can't boot windows vista after it does an update, and going back to system restore every few days is tedious at best.

I'm currently accessing the BIOS with F10# Is there any way i can change the HDD settings, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jim.

Hello people,

New to the forums here but have read some threads that have helped my before.

Im having problems finding out how to change the IRQ settings on my Pavilion a1310. I recently bought an M Audio Audiophile 192 sound card and for weeks I had problems with it. Click, pops, and just general weirdness when using certain audio apps like adobe audition or FL Studio. but not in general use.

I discovered that it could be a conflict with the PCI slot it was plugged into. so i changed slots and pulled out a usless 56k modem in the slot above. this helped but not completely. I saw that the same IRQ is used for both my Audiophile and the onboard realtek sound card. but was unable to change the number in windows. so i disabled the realtek device. however i would like to use both soundcards as the realtek is easy to use for things like Ventrillo of Teamspeak.

Where can I find the settings for the IRQ in my BIOS? I looked but saw nothing familiar.

ACPI (Power saving mode) ACPI - Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
Power On and Wakeup, devices which can, buy their activity start computer or wake up from sleep mode.
RTC = Real Time Clock, allows it to set time of day for computer to start up.
Restore on AC power loss, What happens when power to computer is cut. Last state = If it was on at the time to turn it back on when power is restored. Other setting may be to stay off even when power is restored (I would recommend that), includes using switch at the back of PSU.

On Board SATA Controller = That's controller for SATA ports where you plug in your disks (HDD. SSD or ODD), with it disabled those devices don't work.
On board SATA mode = should have IDE, RAID and AHCI modes, last one best used with SSD drives. RAID: What is RAID storage? Webopedia Definition
On board USB controller = Provides USB support.
Legacy USB Support = Lets you use USB1 and 1.1 devices.
On board audio and LAN (Local Area Network) which provides support for your wired network connections like with wired Routers etc.
On board LAN option ROM, allows starting computer over network signal: LAN Option ROM

Except for that RAID part (if you don't use RAD array) everything else is correctly set for most cases. If you have SSD it should be set to AHCI and if HDD, IDE mode.

I searched but did not find this particular problem listed or solved. Running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, up to date, on P50, also up to date, with factory installed 2x encrypted SSD's and 1x HDD. All three set up with passwords in older BIOS two years ago at purchase and work fine. Present BIOS is 1.56 from February 2019. Also have power on password. I can access the BIOS pages as always after entering power on password and 3x SSD/HDD passwords. I can step through the various top level categories. However, I am unable to modify any settings in the Password or Boot Sequence (at least these two, the only ones of interest) pages. I have new 1TB HDD coming from Amazon and want to replace the existing 500GB factory installed drive. Also want to check out boot order operation and to modify disc passwords for increased security. What could possibly be denying me access to making changes desired? Thank you.

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to change the settings in BIOS CMOS, but when I arrow to Load Optimized Defaults and try to save by hitting F10 and I choose Y to save and exit there is no way out except to hit enter but the settings don't change.

I posted some time ago about trying to fix a problem with this computer for my friend because when it booted up it showed white text on a black screen. I think that is the MBR but not sure. It shows on the first page F1 and del and sometimes loads a lot of what look like drivers but I am not sure, now it's seems to just show the first page with F1 and de. I hit F1 anf it loads to Windows. I brought the computer back to my place to try and fix this issue because my friend said that sometimes the screen just goes black and she can't do anything. That hasn't happened to me in almost a week when I turn it on. However, I thought a repair would do the trick but haven't tried yet. I am wondering if I change the boot menu in BIOS it might get rid of the first screen for her before Windows loads. I just thought before I do the repair I should maybe try the BIOS CMOS settings but can't change anything there.

Also, I know now that I have to uninstall IE8 before doing a repair but can't seem to find an answer about "do I also delete the IE updates in add/remove " or do they automatically go?. Do I have to do anything else before the repair, like uninstalling IE6 if it is there and if not do I install I... Read more

Here's the deal.

I'm administering a LAN consisting of IBM NetVistas (Phoenix BIOS v4.00, mostly) and there is a BIOS setting to have 3 different boot orders depending on the startup type. Primary, Auto & Error startup sequences depending on the circumstances.

What I want to do is disable the last 2 boot preferences so that only the primary is used, and I also want the primary to always boot in the following order: Removable > CDROM > Hard Disk 0 > None. I also want to disable a thing called the PXE Boot Agent, which keeps trying to boot of the LAN, which is a real pain.

When I originally build these PC's I'm using a ghost boot disk which I have set up to automatically boot into ghost and deploy a pre-determined image.

Is there something I can use to change the BIOS settings on each PC as I build it so that the settings above are applied? As usual IBM are no help. I either get told it's not possible (seems doubtful to me tbh) or that they'll 'get back to me' which obviously never happens.

Am I asking too much?

The reason I need this is that if this is not done and the PC is not shut down properly, the BOIS the PC then goes into the error startup sequence which automatically tries to boot off the LAN, and no matter how many times the user tries to reboot it stays stuck in this loop, meaning I have to go out to each user this happens to (at least 5-10 per week, on our 1500 PC site).

thanks in advance.

A:Is it possible to change BIOS settings with a boot disk?

You would most likely need a bios editor to do what you want to do. It is a very risky operation to edit a bios. One wrong string and the board is shot or would need a bios chip. You can repair a bad flash with a working chip but I know nothing about doing it.

So I restart my computer and get this message just after the boot screen on my computer:

NTDLR is missing, press CTRL ALT DEL to restart.

No biggy I thought, I'll just pop the XP CD in and get it back.

Problem is, a few weeks ago I had to put a password on the BIOS settings because I didn't want a certain person changing them. This is the first time I've actually logged in. ALL the settings, literally ALL of them, are unchangeable so that results in me not being able to use the DVD ROM drive to load first instead of the hard drive.

Does anybody know how I can sort my problem? Is there some sort of default BIOS login code which gives me access to all settings that I'm not aware of or something?

Hi there and welcome to TSF. The only way you can do this is by resetting your BIOS. To do this remove your CMOS battery for about 20 minutes and then replace it. Your BIOS should then reset to default settings.

A quick google says that's a dvd drive, plus there's dvd in the name.  Try that and see what you come up with.
Once you set it to boot from disk (first) it will boot from the disk, in some instances it may prompt you to press "any" or a specific key in order to confirm the boot.  You won't change the key, it'll still be f2 or esc to get back to that screen.  The bios screen just lets you select the order in which devices are booted, you'll want to set your dvd to boot first of course.

Hi, I have an HP 2000 Notebook laptop and am trying to gain access to the BIOS settings in order to change some of my RAM (4 GB) over to the dedicated video RAM which is currently only at 64 MB. When I access the BIOS settings from the startup menu all of the default settings are greyed out and does not allow me to edit them on the initial page.

If someone could help me out and how I can gain access to these settings or how else I can accomplish what I am trying to do I would greatly appreciate it!

A:Can't Access BIOS Settings

This option is not available with some OEM BIOS versions. Most use a slimmed down version with minimal options that can be changed.

Usually (if present) it will be loaded under Advanced, System Configuration, or similar.

I have an HPXW6200 workstationwith an HP 08B8h main board serial number CZC631LDP with XP Professional 32 bit presently installed. I have purchased Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit which I am about to instal. I have installed addditional RAM and a firewire which are each recognised. However, I am unable to access the BIOS, even though I have pressed the F numbers and 'any key'when prompted. The instal stops for a second as if accessing safe mode or BIOS but then resumes installing XP. As I am installing a totally different operating system I am assuming that the BIOS may need altering to accept the instal with DVD and the 32/64 bit uprating.. I have ascertained that there are two HDD one is an IDE which I cannot identify make size speed which 'may' be loaded with the BIOS settings, and the other is a Seagate Barracuda SATA 7200 revs 160GB upon which XP is installed. Can you assist to solve this problem.Thankyou,

A:access Bios settings

Too access the BIOS settings, (CMOS I assume?), you need to press the appropriate button before the disc is loaded.
Just after POST starts(the Memory test and detection of harddrives), it should say something along the lines of 'Press F2 to enter setup' or another key (Delete, F10, F8).
You need to press that button before you see the message 'Press any key to boot' to get into BIOS.
