I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The only specs for RAM that you want to be careful to match are:
DDR3
1.5v
Unbuffered
non-ECC
Although I must mention that you should not expect to see a real world noticeable increase in performance by jumping up from 1333 to 1600 (or even 1866). Running faster RAM can be important in overclocking in order to get a stable overclock.
Alternately, you could play with overclocking your current RAM to 1600 and save the money. Some 1333 sticks (but not all) can handle it.

I am building a computer for my first time and after choosing a motherboard, have no idea what RAM to buy. I know that I want 8 gigs of RAM, and the motherboard has slots for 4 RAM cards, but I don't know how to figure out how many pins should be on the RAM that I buy. The motherboard that I chose is an MSI ATX DDR3 2133 Motherboard 970. I would prefer a RAM card from Corsair, but thats just personal preference, not necessity. Help anyone?

Also, in case you need more info about my motherboard, I got it at this URL: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-DDR3-Moth..._n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin:6159420011

A:What RAM should I purchase?

As described in the motherboard description - Memory: 4x DDR3-2133(OC)/ 1866/ 1600/ 1333/ 1066 DIMM Slots, Dual Channel, Max Capacity of 32GB.

This means your motherboard takes DDR3 memory. When an OC follows a number it means that in order for you to run 2133 memory you must overclock, I.e. add more voltage to get it to function at this speed. This is something you don't have to concern yourself with.

Before we move forward why this motherboard? Here are 2 questions that will help you in the process of building a PC:

1. What do you want your system to do?
2. What is your budget?

Ok so I am looking to purchasing my first NAS and I am having trouble trying to understand what I should purchase based on my needs. Here is what I am looking for:

-HDD indicator for each drive
-Gigabit Ethernet
-Hot swappable
-Compatible with OS X and linux
-Capable of showing up as a Network drive for everyone to access

Most that I have researched involve a web interface to set up and can only be access through there such as QNAP. Any chance that there are any that don't involve the web to constantly access? I plan to have like 8TB in the nas.

Thanks in advance!

A:NAS purchase need help

I think they pretty much all use a browser to access settings, but its jut by local I.P. address, nothing Internet involved unless you're coming at it from the WAN side, then you need a NAS with web-access.

NAS drives are usually tucked out of the way and rarely looked at, better for the NAS to email you periodically about it condition. Gigabit is important but so is the underlying power of the NAS itself. Cheap NAS drives with gigabit ethernet can still be slow--usually the more expensive they are, the faster and even more robust ones have a second gigabit port as a failsafe.

Don't know about hot swappable. Mine are in RAID 1 and they'lll email me if there's a problem (hopefully).
Compatibility, some would have thier own format like RiserFS, and I think all mine are now just good old NTFS so there is no need for translation at all with Windows so I'm not sure about standardization when it comes to sharing with those three main OS flavors.
All NAS drives show up on a network once properly configured, with their own I.P. address and name...that's the N in NAS.

I am thinking of purchasing xp. I have built this system of mine and most of it works most of the time but all of it never works all the time. I have a dual boot dual hard drive system. The reason for two os's is because I couldn't get everything to work in win2k pro. Now I am having video difficulties. I have a very full system. I have a modem, network card, sound card, dvd decoder card, scsi card and video card (ati all in wonder 32mb pro), cd rw, dvd,zip drive, usb hub, compact flash, It is my dream to have everything work with one operating system. I would like to be able to watch movies,tv,record cd's at 12x,download network etc. I have been thinking of getting win xp pro in hopes I will be able to use all my hardware and all my software. I don't have any old dos games. I don't even care about games to tell the truth. But I do like music and movies etc. Do you think xp will do the trick or will I just be wasting my money? Also do you know what is involved in becoming a licensed system builder from Microsoft?

the new amd anthlong 64 2x dual core 3, 6000

a new computer case with built in watercooling -(was suppose to get the other day but had none in stock)

Get the 8800GTS 320mb (I think this was what you're referring to).

This would give you the highest performance boost IMO. Twin 7600GT just wouldn't compete, unless you overclock using LN2, and even that, its debatable.

That's like asking us what you should get for dinner. No one else is going to be able to offer any real insight because none of us are going to be using the system. You know if you need it to be portable or not. You know if you place to upgrade the hardware down the line. You know your budget. Sorry if it comes across as me being unhelpful...it's just that this is an extremely vague question that's purely an opinion...and none of us are qualified to make that choice for you.

...a hardware firewall for an office network. We have about 15 computers connected through a DSL modem plugged into a switch. I was wondering what exactly "unlimited nodes" stands for on firewalls such as our old sonic wall? Will this firewall protect the amount of computers we have? http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=251800
http://www.netgear.com/Products/VPNandSSL/WiredVPNFirewallRouters/FVS124G.aspx?detail=Specifications

A:Looking to purchase...

"Unlimited nodes" means exactly that - the firewall will work with any number of hosts behind it. This is opposed to products that will work with only X amount of computers at a time.

As for which device to get.. This depends on what you want that firewall to do and how much traffic it should handle.

PS
I really doubt that you would have functional internet with lots of computers plugged into a DSL modem. Are you sure that this "DSL modem" thing does not already include a router and therefore also a firewall?

Hello all, i'm planning on purchasing a new computer for christmas from an online store that i feel is fairly reputable. i'm just not sure what type of processor to shoot for though. i currently have a 1.3 ghz Intel Celeron from gateway that i bought off my sister not too long ago. This system is fairly outdated that i know, and i am wondering if I should go with a quad or dual core intel that is 1.8ghz or am i better off with an intel celeron D 3.6ghz. from what i am hearing the dual core is (2) 1.8 ghz cores, so in essence a 2.6 ghz right? on one hand i think that the 3.6ghz would be pretty damn fast, and yet i read articles that would lead me to believe the 1.8 ghz dual core would be faster. i plan on using my computer for normal internet browsing as well as some gaming. i play some mmorpg's like guild wars and plan on getting into playing some half life and gears of war. which of these two processors would be best for a gaming system. These are the two that i am looking at here.

Intel Core 2 Duo 800 / 1066Mhz FSB
or
Intel Celeron D365 3.6ghz Lga775 533fsb

which is the best for gaming?

A:New Purchase, what to buy

two cores does NOT. i repeat. NOT mean twice the power. it simply splits the load between two processors. it makes it a hell of a lot faster even at a slower gigahertz speed.

i just want to clear that up so there are no misconceptions there. that's a key thing.

if you want game and play something like the half life series or gears of war, you're going to want a fairly hefty processor. not to mention a good graphics card.

the processors you'll want to look at are the Intel E6750 Core 2 duo, and hte Intel Q6600 quad core. you can even look up some benchmarks to show you how they perform as compared to other chips here:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html

for the rest of the system, make sure you have a quality power supply, at least 2 gigs of RAM from a good manufacturer, and a graphics chip that was very recently introduced.

in terms of power supplies, i suggest the Antec Earthwatts 500watt, the Antec NeoHE 500watt, or an Enermax Liberty power supply. those are very powerful for the price, and are certified to give at least 80% efficiency if not better. so you'll get vast amounts of power, and you'll save on your electricity bill.

for the RAM, get some from Crucial, Mushkin, Corsair, G. Skill, or OCZ technologies. those are the top brands in the business. or at least make sure it comes with it. and get at least 2 gigs worth.

for the graphics chip, i recommend at least an 8800gt or better for gaming. or if you're into ATI, go with th... Read more

I am going to get a CD re-writer for back-ups. My computer place stocks Liteon 40x12x48 with Nero Software.

Have never used a burner before and was wondering if this is an OK brand. I looked it up on the Internet and it seems quite popular. I only want it for basic stuff. I don't really want to go elsewhere as this place has looked after the computer very well since I got it.

Just thought I would check out the views of this forum.

The Lite-On is an excellent burner for the money. Lite-On has been good about their firmware updates. The 40X burner you mentioned was released without Mt Rainier support and with P-CAV recording mode. They added both Mt Rainier and true CAV recording through firmware. You donít have to know what all that means. Just go to their site and get their latest firmware and you will have the fastest 40x burner on the market.

I am concerned that both of these titles will be either too much or too buggy for my PC. Is there anyone out there with any experience with these titles?

My PC as a 32mb GeForce 2 video card. Which was more than enough for 'Unreal Tournament 2003', MOHAA, Red Faction II and "Delta Force: Black Hawk Down".

Since it is still a long time before 'Halo' or 'Half Life2' or 'Doom 3' will be released I need another FPS to tide me over until then. Are there any other FPS's out there that I am overlooking?

I want a lot of DDR2 RAM, but not only do I want a lot but I want it to be good quality RAM that will last a long time, and has a fast speed like 800MHz or higher for $90 or less.

Welcome,
Dont really have an answer to your question, but have some advice. If you are not going to replace all the ram at once, be careful with the purchase. Make sure that all the sticks are identical, especially the frequency. Many, who replace, ram, buy all that will be used at the same time.

ADM Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.30GHz
160GB SATA 7200 HD
Memory DDR2 2GB
GeForce 6100 GPU
DVDRW
350 Watt Power Supply
Operating System: "Windows Vista Business"
Startup OS: "Windows XP Pro"
I'm leaning toward this one because most of my software is old and may not play on Vista, and I like XP it has done me no wrong. Besides I'm 84 years old and I don't want to learn any new systems.
WS Office97, Lotus 123, and others. I am not in position to replace my software with the latest editions.

The other is:

250GB SATA 7200 HD
Memory DDR2 3GB
GeForce 6150SE
DVDRW
250 Watt Power Supply
Operating System: "Windows Home Vista Premium"
The Vista is a drawback, but this looks like a great buy.

Any suggestions , comments or pertinent information on these two machines , or others in my price range?.
Has anyone any info. on machines like the Systemax with 2 OS?

I am considering buying/installing an SSD, probably 240gb. I currently have a very well functioning machine with a 1tb HD and all my OS and software is installed on that HD. I am using Windows 7, with all the latest updates installed. I have never used an SSD or installed one so I have some questions:
1. Is 240gb enough or would 128gb be sufficient? I believe I only want Windows 7 (likely upgrade to Windows 8 when released) on the SSD and leave my current HD alone with all my software as it is currently installed.
2. What/where can I find a step by step for installing the SSD and directing the OS to read everything else from the current HD.
3. I usually use the Hibernate feature and only completely power down every few days. Would that still be acceptable?
4. I assume I would have to purchase a new copy of the OS therefore I may wait until Windows 8 is released before making the change.

What software are you referring to? Usually, if you have to pay for a licence, that activation is necessary to receive updates for the product, and a separate licence is required for each machine. It's hard to tell without all the info.

OEM will be the cheapest. Make sure what you are buying is genuine Microsoft product which has the full hologram on its face and an authentic COA and EULA so you can validate it.

To use an update you must have a previous valid version of windows on the system you are updating. A full, clean install is always better.

I bought an OEM version recently and paid $114.00 including shipping and handling. I have recently seen some for a few dollars less - it seems they vary with time. Make sure the one you get has SP2 already on it and make sure the components you buy are compliant with SP 2 requirements.

I'm also lookiing into getting a notebook as well (might purchase that at a store Best buy, etc.) What do you recommend for that. Any advice or info would be great. One thing to keep in mind, both will be primarily for gaming =) Anythingelse is secondary - besides, I got a couple other moderately slower comps I can do "normal" stuff on....heheh..

Thanks!

List of what I am concnetrating on:
CPU (brand/Speed) - AMD (want somethin fast, have 2.0 now)
Video (brand) - Probably stick with ATI, but open to otehr suggestions
HDD - No preference, atleast a 60G drive
Memory - No pref, atleast 512
CD/DVD - No pref.
Monitor - got 17" to use, but may look at a flat panel ($?)

Hello, my Surface Book was stolen yesterday and need to get a new computer for work (CAD and Sketching for Industrial Design). I would like to know: 1. How does the P40 GPU compare to the performance of the dGPU from the Surface Book? 2. I'm based in Austria and on Lenovo's webshop they offer a keyboard layout "English European". How is this different from the US international layout? (I don't want the QWERTZ or the English UK layout). If someone from Lenovo sees this, please try to improve the info on the webshop... it is really poor. Thanks!

I'm looking to purchase a Dell Studio laptop for personal and school use. I have never owned a laptop, but tried the Studio in a store recently and really liked it. I currently share a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop computer with my family, which I built last summer on the Dell website. I chose XP as the OS, since we have had XP on our family desktop computers since about 2003.

I have heard not-so-great things about Vista, and I guess I'm just used to XP, so I am very skeptical about choosing Vista to be installed on my new laptop. I spoke to a Dell sales rep who told me that XP "is not the smart choice" and that in 5 days, Microsoft will no longer be supporting XP. I wanted to post on here to seek some advice on Vista vs. XP. Has Vista improved/removed all of the bugs? Or is XP still the way to go?

Since I am so used to XP, there is a way to change Vista's display so that it looks and operates like XP, correct? Just like you can change XP's settings to look like Classic Windows?

Also, does anyone know anything about Dell's system colors? I am looking for solid black, and the Dell Studio 15 has an XP option, but a "Black Chainlink" color option. I believe this color has a chainlink design on it, though the rep insisted it is solid black. The Studio 17 is available in "Jet Black," which I know is solid, but is only available in Vista. Thus, my dilemma. I know color may be a ridiculous thing to care about, but I don't wa... Read more

My current Thinkpad T61 is 6 years old & without going into details, it's telegraphing it's time to replace.

Having gone through this drill many times I've fairly well learned what to look for and pay for in a new machine (I will be staying with the Thinkpad--since the machine largely stays home weight is not an issue). However, there are several particulars that I would like to run by the experts.

1. I will order an SSD primary drive (and the optional drive for the DVD bay). Do you need to be particular about manufacturer and spec with an SSD as you might with a traditional drive?

2. Is there a significant performance increase with a 4 core vs. 2 core processor and if so, can laptops generally handle a 4 core?

3. Since I keep my computers for 5+ years and I've yet to buy one where I haven't had to upgrade memory later on (for example, this machine had 2GB at purchase and now has 4) and given the low current cost of memory and that I'd 'normally' now order a machine with 8GB...I'm thinking that 16GB makes sense (assuming the laptops can normally hold that amount with a 64 bit OS)?

4. Lastly and probably most important--I do not need to buy a machine right this minute. 'If' Intel will be introducing a significantly better (performance + battery duration) laptop chipset within the next 6 months or so, I'd hold off?

Comments appreciated--

Mark

A:A few purchase parameters

Just my opinion on question #3. The average individual is usually fine with 4GBs; however, 8GBs would be great but I think 16GBs is really overkill but if money is no object and/or you perceive the need, then go for it. Good luck.

My stepbrother burned a 64-bit and 32-bit W7 DVD's for me.

What am I supposed to do with them?

Whatever the source was, it was legit - he has a VERY HIGH networking guru position/income to protect. I couldn't demonstrate my ignorance, so I'm bringin' it here

Ask him for the keys. Have you looked to see if he burned a file to the disk containing the key?

I recently purchased the windows 7 installation files for 32 and 64 bit from a very reputable person on ebay. I unzipped the files using his program and they checked out using crc and comparing them with the files on his download site. I saved them on my portable hard drive which is a verbatim 160gig usb. When I tried to burn the program onto a disc there were about 3 megabites missing after the burn. attempts at installation onto the new computer gave me the message: NTLDR is missing. That told me that not all the necessary stuff got to the disc thru the burning process.
My question is: how do you ensure that what you are burning all gets burned?
I would appreciate comments from anyone who has resolved this situation, or those who know, thanks.

Hi all,

I'm trying to purchase Windows XP Pro SP2 OEM version. Now this oem one is about $187, http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...ab=11&NoMapp=0

The retail one is like 300+, I don't really need any stuff other than the XP cd + cdkey, but the price difference is so big, is there any difference between OEM and normal retail version (the one comes with the box)?

Thanks
