Is it possible for a device using Internet Connection Sharing to also run as a DMZ?

Q: Is it possible for a device using Internet Connection Sharing to also run as a DMZ?

I set up ICS on my laptop so that I can use my Xbox 360 in the living room. Everything runs fine, however when I run a network diagnostic test on the 360 it tells me that it only has "moderate" connectivity to the NAT.

When I have the 360 hooked up directly to the router setting up the DMZ for the 360 is no problem. However, when the 360 is set up in the living room and running off of the ICS I can't set it up as a DMZ because my router only allows a DMZ to be set up as a hardcoded 192.168.1.xxx format. Since the address assigned to the 360 does not follow the 192.168.1.xxx format I need to be able to assign the DMZ to an address that doesn't maintain the 192.168.1.xxx convention. Is there any way of doing this either by reconfiguring my WRT54G router in some way or by some other networking trickery?

Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Is it possible for a device using Internet Connection Sharing to also run as a DMZ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

They both share a wireless broadband internet connection which works perfectly but I don't understand why file and printer sharing doesn't work. Hi,
I have windows 7 Pro installed. I have a DSL connection that requires a username and password. I have read the tutorials for setting up ICS in windows 7, but it is not working for me. In my 'change adapter settings' page, I have 3 connections: LAN, Wireless and M 1 (this is the dial-up for the username and password). Here's what I have done:

I have enabled ICS for M 1, and created an ad-hoc wireless connection called 'M network'. I basically want to share my wired connection with my iPhone. Everything is ok as far as connecting my iPhone to M network, but when I try to use the internet, all i get is a 'connecting' message on my phone, and it doesnt go any further. I have used this network before to connect 'air mouse' on my phone that lets me use my phone as a touchpad. It still works fine that way, but I cant use internet.

I have even tried enabling the ICS on LAN instead, but got the same results.

Am I doing something wrong?

Previously my 2 computers (specs under profile) were networked successfully with a shared dial up connection showing up as the Internet Gateway on the second computer. After switching to Tiscali ADSL Tiscali shows up as the Internet Gateway and can be connected and disconnected successfully from the second computer, however, no connection can be made to the internet. The internet settings on the second computer under both Firefox and IE are set to Auto detect settings for network. (Note: AVG update doesn't work either from the second computer- does it take its connection settings from IE?) ICS is enabled in Network Connections.

Thanks in advance.

I'm working on getting into Internet Connection Sharing (ICS from now one). I'm doing this for a number of reasons: I do have a network switch I hook my computer into. But, for a period of time each night, I have to unplug it. Don't ask me why. It's a long story. I do have wireless adapters that I use. However, they stopped being fully functional when we got a new wifi. But, we're not returning the wifi because all the laptops and smartphones can connect without any issues. Instead, I have opted to connect my desktop to my laptop via ICS and share the laptop's wifi. I was able to configure the IP addresses and Mask so that I could see the shared folders between the two computers. That's about as far as I got. How do I make it so the laptop shares it's internet connection with the desktop?

My current settings:
Overall:
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.254

Desktop (link to laptop):
IP: 192.168.1.11
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.254

Laptop:
Link to Desktop
IP: 192.168.1.2
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.254

Link to WiFi
IP: 192.168.1.3
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.254
DNS: 192.168.1.254

I thought I might need to tweak the setting in ICS under the Settings button. But, I wasn't sure which IP address to use (most online instructions state that DHCP will assign the addresses and don't go in-depth or they have a rather bizarre IP setup).

I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 1501, running Windows Vista (it shipped with XP but I upgraded). Recently I got an Xbox 360, but it's located at the opposite end of the house from my wireless router, and rather than blow $100 on the microsoft wireless adapter I decided to connect it to the Internet through my laptop using ICS instead.

However, whenever I plug my Xbox into my laptop and turn on ICS I lose my Internet connection completely. Vista's Network Sharing Center claims that I'm still connected to the Internet, but I can't access any webpage and my router doesn't respond to ping, and the only way to get my Internet access back is to restart my laptop.

At first I thought it was a driver issue, but I installed the latest Vista drivers for both the ethernet controller and the wireless card, but the problem did not go away. Can anyone suggest some fixes?

The BT speedtouch 585 wireless router is all you need - it has a modem and ethernet and wireless

so the BT speedtouch 585 wireless router should be connected to the phone line
and your desktop connected to the router and laptop tothe router wirelessly

I have two computers home networked, both running XP SP2, connected with an ethernet cable.

I've always used the Network Setup Wizard to home network them.

My problem is, every time I reboot the main computer, I am having to rerun the setup wizard as the other computer can not connect to the internet through mine once I have rebooted. I have never had this problem before, but had to reinstall my operating system the other day, and have had the problem since then. Thought it might of be something I did wrong during installing XP and all my drivers, so have redone it a few times, but still the same problem.

I have Internet Connection Sharing turned on, and I can view the folders on the other computer, but every time I reboot my main computer stops sharing the internet connection

Any Ideas?

Hi,

I have a Netgear DG834G wireless router which is wired to a pc downstairs, and wirelessly connected to 3 laptops and a pc upstairs. However, my laptop in my room has great signal, while my PC next to it has very low signal which only lasts for a few minutes at a time. I have tried USB recievers and a pci card but it is still poor.

Therefore I would like to share the internet connection from my laptop to my PC. I have a CAT 5e cable connected between them but am at a loss where to go from here. All the tutorials I have seen online assume that one of them will be wired to the router, whereas here I need it to be wireless to the laptop and then wired to the PC.

I was fiddling with this earlier and the wired connection shows up on my laptop but not my PC in 'Network Connections' and by messing with connection settings on this I think I managed to share it. However, my laptop then refused to connect to the Internet and I got popups saying there was an IP conflict on the system.

Please could anyone help me sort this out with simple intstructions as I'm not too brilliant at networking

Thanks in advance
James

If you have already looked at the settings for getting the client to bring up the line on the host when it wants to dial out, and you are sure that they are correct then this could be problematic to resolve.

He would have to have a very, very strong wireless router for this to work. You're better off buying your own internet connection. You can get some DSL plans from $14.95 per month.

On a computer I have at work, I connect to the internet using a "AT&T Network Client" application. It uses some sort of proxy server to access the internet over an intranet.

I have a laptop with Ubuntu Linux installed on it. The Windows version of the Client software isn't supported by WINE so it won't run, nor will the very old release of the Linux version of the software (Lacks the necessary features anyway, I think).

So, I thought, instead of trying to do this through software, I'll just take the easier approach.

What I'd like to do is add a second networking card to the work PC, and share the internet access it gets through the AT&T client software, using a crossover cable. The PC that has this software on it is running Windows XP.

What's the best way to do this?

I am unable to share an internet connection between two computers in a homegroup. File sharing is OK. The ADSL modem is connected (via USB, no ethernet) to a desktop, the desktop to a laptop via a router.

The problem is that after opening network/adapter settings/LAN/properties on the desktop, NO sharing tab appears, only a 'networking' tab. On the laptop both tabs appear...

How can I get around this? I know I should really get a modem that connects directly to the route, but don't want to waste any time/money if it doesn't resolve the problem.

A:Internet connection sharing

The way to enable ICS is to enable ICS on the connection that has internet access, and it sounds like you have done this. To check please show for the computer with two network cards and for another computer connected to the TRENDnet router ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

[Press ENTER after each command.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I'm having a problem getting ICS to work, and hope someone has some advice. Here's my setup.

1. Host computer - it has WinXP Pro and a cable modem connected via USB. The internet connection is enabled, shared, and firewalled (using XP's firewall), and the internet connection works fine from this computer.

2. Client computer - it has WinXP Home, and is connected to the host computer via a crossover cable.

I set everything up using that home networking wizard. The LAN connection between the two computers works fine, and the internet connection worked fine for a day or two. Then, starting yesterday, it stopped working. I know the shared internet connection is enabled when the client computer boots, because AOL is installed and it pops up a message saying "Your computer is connected to the internet. Would you like to start AOL." However, within a few seconds, the connection becomes disabled.

When I go to view the network connections on the client, the shared connection is listed as disabled. If I double click on it, it contacts the host to try to enable the connection, but responds with "Connection failed!". As I said, the LAN connection still works fine at this point. The 2 computers can see each other, ping each other, etc. The host computer still shows the shared internet connection as enabled as well. I'm pretty certain I didn't change anything on the host that would cause it to stop working, and the owner of the client machi... Read more

If you connect A and B to a wireless router, you have no need for ICS. The router will provide the sharing if internet access.

Yes, you can have printer sharing on both at the same time, folder and file sharing too if you want.

I have DSL and my main machine is Windows 98SE (or ME).

If I setup the ICS on either OS, can I connect a Mac to it? Is it true that the ICS in Win 98SE only allows connection to a modem, not DSL?

A:Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and Mac

Yes, any IP-attached client can connect to the internet through ICS. From MS: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q234/8/15.asp
And, you can use any device (DSL, cable modem, satellite) as the connection. If you currently have a network, and are adding DSL, and want to share the connection AND keep your network, you'll probably be adding another NIC to the host. This way, one is for the modem, the other is for the LAN. I have heard that USB modems (dial-up or broadband), do not work with ICS, but I can't verify that.
Another way to do it, is to get a router (D-link, LinkSys, Netgear, etc...) and hook the modem up to that, and let it handle the internet connection. All your PC's/Mac's would then plug into the router. Again, try to get a modem with an ethernet connection. This configuration means that the host does not have to be powered on for the other clients to connect to the internet.
I've heard of one router with USB connections to the modem, made by Netgear, but again, the info is second hand.
Goto http://www.dslreports.com or http://www.practicallynetworked.com for more info on how to hook up a router, and sharing in general. These sites have LOADS of info for the home networker.

hi, i have a problem with my internet sharing, i have my windows 7 laptop connecte to modem(not wirelessly), and i set up an ad hoc network so that i can share internet on the other windows Vista laptop. The ad hoc network is connected, but the internet sharing is not enabled i tried checking the "allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection." but no luck and im even confused what should i choose as the private network connection below the option.
Also when start adhoc network wizard, after entering the name and network key and next, there is no option that says "turn on internet connection sharing" i dont know why??
please i need help, im tired of trying..

Have you tried setting up a 'work group' with sharing enabled between the two computers?

Hi I am having a nightmare trying to share the internet over a lan

The LAN is working and i can see the drives , its just the internet that wont work,

I have been using sygate home networking and that seemed to cure the problem, but i now have outpost firewall and the two wont work together

I am running win2k on the host computer and win98 on the client

everything appears to be setup correctly, I have also tried using netbui and the computers could not agree on ppp protocols so I have just tried using tcp/ip and it still wont work,

If anyone could shed some light on this i would v much appreciate it as this has been bugging me for weeks now

cheers

I'm attempting to connect both my computers to the internet through a cable modem. I bought the crossover cable, and both computers have net cards. I'm using my usb port to connect to the internet with the server computer. I've installed internet connection sharing from my win98se disk. I still can't get the other computer to connect. What am I doing wrong, or what else do I need to do? Please help!

Thx in advance for any help given.

One thing to check, On the second machine open Internet explorer, go to Tools, Internet options, connections, LAN Settings and try unchecking "Automatically Detect Settings". This is usually checked by default and can cause problems with some service providers.

Good Luck.

I have set up internet connection sharing on a Vista laptop - another laptop is connected to the same WLAN via an ADSL router (which is not currently connected to an ISP) providing DHCP. ICS initially worked (Orange mobile broadband dongle) but seems to have stopped working, apparently randomly - deleting and recreating the orange dial-up connection doesn't seem to help. Connecting both laptops via an ad hoc network doesn't help either. Any advice much appreciated.

A:Internet Connection Sharing - help

ICS is a mini-DHCP server, so it's quite possible that the other DHCP server on the same network is in conflict. If you're going to use ICS, I'd suggest deactivating all other DHCP servers on that network segment.

I gather this is a problem many people are having. I have a Vista laptop hooked up to ADSL Internet via Ethernet connector and an XP laptop. I set up an ad-hoc wireless network with Internet Connection Sharing, no problem. The XP laptop had Internet via the network.

Then I got into setting up file sharing and screwed something up somewhere. ICS won't work although both computers are connected to my ad-hoc network. I tried to make sure the LAN connection had ICS allowed. When I click "Properties" on the LAN Connection, I have no tab besides the Network tab.

Any idea what I can do to get Internet sharing back?

I have DSL at my house and I am going to try to set it up to where i can use a phone line to dial a computer at my house and have it connect me over that phone line. I realize I wont have dsl speed if I can do this. Can anyone help me.
