Ideapad Y500 Keys (Broken, Poor design)

Q: Ideapad Y500 Keys (Broken, Poor design)

Hello Lenovo Community,I currently have a Lenovo Y500 Ideapad. I personally love the processing power of my laptop and have found it to satisfy most of my needs. The problem I seem to be having is with the quality of the keyboard. After about a month after purchase, one of my keys (the F key) seemed to have fallen off. I noticed after examining it that the plastic that holds the keys on simply snapped off (about 5mm of cheap plastic to hold the keys on). I sent it in and have recieved a whole new keyboard within a week. 3 weeks later and my S key has broken again. I do have warranty on it but it is a pain to sendit in EVERY 3 weeks to get a single key fixed. I was wondering if this was simply my bad luck or poor Lenovo keyboard design. I am considering returning my computer or scrapping it to get a new one with better quality. Someone let me know if it's just me that is experience this or if Lenovo has serious issues with their key design.Sincerely,Angry Lenovo Customer.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

1.) This is my first Notebook (I always bought HP laptops) and since there's no on/off button on this Turbo Silver Notebook touchpad I tried disabling it in Device Manager and for that session it was disabled but the touchpad still came back on each time I started up. Finally had to call tech support. They remote accessed, went into BIOS and disabled the touchpad. I always use a mouse.  Even though this is not a laptop a simple software addition that senses when a mouse is used and shuts off the touchpad would be welcomed. Otherwise just put an on/off button on the touchpad. 2.) I find that the sharp edge design of this Notebook is rough on my arms. I like to keep my wrist and arms on the Notebook surface as I type and the edges of this Notebook leave indentations on my arms. I had to put a soft plastic pad on the Notebook edge to be comfortable. I never had this problem with the laptops. Although I no longer need all the bells and whistles of a laptop I'm realizing how much I do miss some basic laptop features that this Turbo Silver Notebook just doesn't have.

A:Poor Notebook Design

Hi BH, Thank you for your reply but as I already had done all that you suggested with no positive result, the HP Tech still had to remote access my notebook. Maybe it was a glitch in my version of Windows 10.  Within a week after purchasing this notebook a Windows update for a completely newer version of Windows 10 had come up but after installing it I had to go back to the previous version because the newer version wiped out most of my apps and all of my settings and they had taken a long time initially setting up and I wasn't going to do it again.  A simple on/off button would absolutely solve the touchpad issue irregardless of Windows/HP software.  I do however overall like the notebook and know people are using the terms laptop and notebook interchangeably but there is one huge difference in my opinion between laptops and notebooks. I can actually put this Notebook on my lap or bed etc., and not have to worry about occluding the bottom vents and causing it to overheat as I would have with my previous HP laptops. This Notebook has no noticeable vents whereas all of my previous laptops have all had bottom or back vents or both.  I'm not buying another new notebook because of the rough edge design but now know to look for it in the future.   Again, thanks for taking the time to reply and I hope HP changes the design with a couple of simple modifications. Be well, Merry

Is anybody out there  with a new type touchpad that has no visable buttons . I am finding it very difficult to control easily - is it me or my machine. Fistly I had to disable 2 fingure scroll  because if I hovered too near the lift click section of the pad whils moving the cursor it scrolled instead  I had to disable tapping because it it too sensitive  Secondly the left and rightclick areas on the pad are not symetrical . the right click area is small and near the front but the left click is virtually anywhere else , The physical click sound happens without a software responseresulting in having to press it several times to get a response Overall I find using the buttons very unproductive as I get so many false operations especially as the pad lacks any physical textures etc  that allow the user to feel where their finger is when they try to click the correct button . There is little real difference between the textures of touchpad and the surrounding areas . As seams to be the moderm idium - Style and looks over function and useability   Incidetly does anyone know if I can allocate keys on the keyboard to act as buttons or some external proper buttons  My only solution is to return to using a TrackBall but it defeats the one box convenience of a Laptop . Back in August of 2016, I purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 for taking notes in lectures. I became very unhappy with it very quickly and resorted to buying a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga (1st gen). I fell in love with this machine at first sight. Great specs, decent price, yadda yadda. The pen capability is near perfect and I now have all my hand-written notes organized neatly on a cloud service for convenient viewing at anytime.  About 9 months into the warranty, I soon noticed these white spots appearing on the screen. About the same time, i noticed the pen was becoming very inaccurate when trying to write on the screen. This didn't really seem like a mishap to me, so I consulted Lenovo Customer Service about honoring the warranty and replacing the screen. They were phenomenal! I shipped the laptop and within a week the repair was finished and the laptop on its way back to me.  Now, about 9 months later, the same "white spots" are starting to show again. The pen accuracy is again starting to dwindle and it's becoming extremely frustrating that a >$1,500 laptop is failing so quickly. This laptop is made to write on. They've done a great job in designing the retractable keyboard, but made one huge mistake in designing the functionality of tablet mode. There are two rubber feet on the bottom of the 1st gen and, consequently, there is a small gap between the back of the screen and the bottom of the laptop when the machine is in tablet mode. Ov... I see a lot of the black LCD screen issue.  I have this same issue.  The answer is to replace the motherboard.  What part of the mother board is bad?  I would assume it is the video chip.  These motherboards cost about $350.  Not worth it to fix it if you have to pay for the motherboard.  This would make one to think about switching to another brand.  Why have an external HDMI port if it does not work when the LCD screen is black.  You would think that this external port would be used as a diagnostic port for the LCD screen.

Hi everyone, For 3 years now, my Y500 (gt650m sli, second gpu in Ultrabay) had been working fine. But now, there is a problem. My primary gpu, i.e. the one attached to the motherboard, not the one connected via Ultrabay, appears to be broken. The Problem:Occasionally, the primary gpu has malfunctions. Therefore, I have to use the device manager to switch it off. Otherwise, my laptop tends to reboot out of an instant after running for some time. There are times when I can use the gpu for several hours without any problems, but there also are times when I cannot use it at all. When I switch it off in the dev.man., move my notebook, and switch it on again, there is a probability that the gpu might work. Hence, I assume a hardware issue. The Story:The problem first appeared after a really nasty circumstance; I took my notebook with me in its bag (a rather fluffy bag to prevent the notebook from blows) and suddenly, I realised that the bag became hot. The reason was a Windows update started out of standby... The notebook crashed with 34% of the updates installed. Afterwards, I had to reinstall Windows or nothing would work. (The crash at 34% seems to originate in the empty battery, but that's not for sure)After the reinstallation, said issue occured for the first time. Hence, I reinstalled the OS several times. Currently, I am using the OS from the OKR with the automatic (inescapable) update to Windows 8.1. I have checked every possible driver issue but have not made it wo... Read more

I can't believe HP didn't product test this new keyboard layout, but if they had, they would have quickly found the 1-touch Airplane Mode button is NOT user friendly. Anyway, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows if this button can be disabled. Tried again, 3 times already but the same result. Then I tried downloading Window 8.1 ISO through official channels with success but when I try it that way it requires me to input my present Windows 8 product serial which originally came with the machine. But that didn't work because it is OEM.  Ultimately I am trying to upgrade to windows 10 but I need to upgrade to 8.1 first.

I have a lenovo ideapad y500 with a 1366x768 screen, and I am looking to pop open the screen, and replace the panel with a 1920x1080 screen. Assuming that I purchase another 15.6 inch screen (size of the original screen), is this possible? A model of the y500 is sold with a 1080p display, and the graphics card in my model is more than capable of outputting such a resolution. I was just wondering if there is a chance that the connections between my laptop and new screen would not match as I do not know if there is some sort of standard port with screens. Thanks!

A:Screen upgrade lenovo ideapad y500

You would need to find out the exact model of the 1080p screen was that was sold with that model and order the same one or compatible replacement model. Laptop screens are not universally interchangeable and you can't just buy any screen and connect it.

Okay so, I got my Lenovo Ideapad Y500 a couple days ago. Liked it and all BUT when I had my mouse connected into the laptop and then turned off the touchpad, it would not turn back on. The only way I could get my touchpad to work again is by restarting the computer, which is pretty frustrating. I searched this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?   for ANY drivers/software for the Y500 mousepad and there are none. Can anyone help me fix this problem before I get a refund from this potentially bad purchase? FN + F6 toggles the touchpad on and off and I have tried to turn it on and off, with and without the external mouse connected. Thanks for the help.

In a nutshell, I noticed that my laptop screen would randomly start turning off for no reason while the laptop was still running. The "fix" for this would be to open the laptop up farther. Eventually, only the most wide-open orientation would allow the screen to display, and even that has ceased to work consistently. So I have read other posts about display issues that are common, so I will try to be as specific as I can. THIS IS NOT:  A software issue, as best I can tell. My screen does not show lines or strange patterns, it just goes black. And I don't mean the display goes  blank, it actually turns off. No light. A screen issue, I don't think. The screen displays perfectly well for short periods, and then just cuts off. It seems to be effected by the position of the display (e.g. How open the laptop is). I have to open the laptop as far as it will go for best effect, and even then, the screen will simply shut off after several minutes. Sometimes I can find a "sweet spot", and get the display to function for an hour or more, so long as I don't jostle the laptop more forcefully than using keystrokes. A GPU issue. I have hooked up the laptop, during period of screen blackness, to an external display. Everything shows up fine, which I understand would not happen if the GPU was having problems. MY MAIN QUESTION FOR THOSE SMARTER AND MORE SKILLED THAN I:Is the issue likely a loose screen cable, or something similar? Something that would cau... Read more

So, long story short. I accidentally deleted my recovery partition and now it seems like the only thing that will get my laptop up and running normally again is a recovery disc from Lenovo. I just got off the phone with customer service and they informed me that recovery discs can not be ordered in USB form.  This is where my main issue is. My Lenovo Ideapad Y500 laptop did not come with a CD-ROM Drive. With that being said, I do not want to spend $69 on a recovery disc that will require me to purchase an external CD-ROM drive that potentially won't even work... When I asked customer support if I could return and get a refund for the disc if it will not boot through an external CD-ROM drive, they said no. Has anyone been able to run a recovery disc from an external cd-rom drive successfully? Any suggestions? I'm at my wit's end with this thing...

Hi guys, this is my first post in these forums. Now, I searched a lot for a solution to my problem, but now I'm creating this thread.I got a Lenovo Ideapad Y500, and it worked really well for like a month, then I started hearing this really loud whirring noise and some vibration coming from the left side of the laptop, near the heat vents. I shut my laptop off and when I turned it backon It was gone. But now the noise is back and whenever I reboot my laptop is goes away but then it comes back after a while. Also, whenever I run the dust removal thingy in the Lenovo energy management app, It gets really loud then it goes away.I don't really feel lots of air coming out from the vent on the leftside of the laptop. I think it might be a fan problem but my laptop stays around 45-65 Celsius mostly. I don't know how hot it runs when I play games, though. Hello, folks! I installed and update from Windows 10 Build 1803 to 1903 around a week ago. I noticed that my USB ports would keep telling me error messages that they didn't make before, such as not recognizing a USB device or complaining about a power surge. After doing some resets and further updates, the problem is there again, but for a different reason. Apparently, my USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller won't start, even though I didn't tamper with my hardware. Here's a screenshot I took of it in the Device Manager, displaying an error code 10: Yay, an error! I've been using this laptop for a few years now, and while it has its fair share of small problems (track pad not working, keyboard coming loose and sometimes not working, speakers slowly dying, start ups where the screen doesn't turn on.) Despite those issues I always found a way to either fix or at least work around the problems until today.I was just watching YouTube videos when the laptop without any warning shut off instantly, even though it was plugged in, and mostly charged. After that none of the power lights would go on at all, not even the charging one. I tried unplugging it, removing the battery, holding down the power button for 30 second, and every combination of those steps I could think of. Is there any hope of saving this laptop, or is it bricked?

Hello. As the title says, my Ideapad Y500 is starting to have some issues. A week ago it refused to shut down. Screen would turn off but not the laptop, which would remain kind of dormant. Following some advice online I uninstalled Express Cache form the Control Panel. Now the system turns off, but I have a new problem, this time booting up.Whenever I boot up the laptop it goes to the Lenovo splash screen, then black, then resets to the splash screen and stays there forever. If I shut it down manually and then boot it up again, it goes to Windows as it should, but the whole process takes from 2 to 10 minutes. If I try to restart the system, same thing happens.  If I keep doing this I fear one day it will just die on me.Added to this, I've been getting intermitent failures of the Intel RST software, which sometimes just won't work at all. Other times it's fine. I read somewhere I should update the drivers but I don't know where to find them or if hey may harm my pc even more.I'm running Windows 8.1 (64 bits). So far, besides uninstallid Express Cache, I have run chkdsk on both disks on my system and they appear to be fine (or at least nothing comes up when running the scan). Beyond this, I have no clue how to proceed. I'm not a especially tech savvy person, so any help you guys might give me will be greatly appreciated it. Also, if you can explain it as clear and simply as possible, it would be that much better. Thanks a lot!

So it only appears when i just unplug the power cable and leave it. I have read some topics(some ppl have the same problem) but i haven't find any solution. Is there any solution to solve this problem?? Bios version is the latest one.. I'm assuming you have win 8. Try this:On the Windows 8 Start Screen, press CNTL + ALT + DEL.On the next screen select the Power icon located in the lower Right. When the options appear, press the SHIFT key and select "Restart". When the next screen appears, select "Turn off your PC". The unit will power down completely.See if you still have the battery draining.Note: Even if the unit is off, a little drain is expected to maintain the clock, etc.

I purchased my Envy M6 in the fall of 2012 and for the past several months I have been having issues with the right hinge. Most recently, it has been pulling apart the screen and the hinge itself appears to be broken; all of which makes it incredibly difficult to close the laptop smoothly. I know I am well beyond my warranty period, but this seems to be a well known design flaw on HP's part, any chance this can be resolved? I'd rather spend money to move over to a more durable platform such as a Mac, than spend money on a repair, so that's not an option for me.  thanks.

So this is the second time this has occurred in the span on a few months. The system fan has broken for the second time now and I cannot do anything. It's all because of the design flaw that causes the hinge on the left side of the laptop to come off. Now this is both a huge inconvenience and disappointment because I require this laptop to complete all my work. Now if i have to pay for the flaw that HP created in their laptop design, that is completely outrageous and I will have to just get a new laptop as this is just going to cost me as much as it does to service a European car. This is just unacceptable! Just simply and utterly poor service from HP and I can't even get a hold of any of them to ask for a repair. Even if that is completed, it's going to be weeks before they fully repair it. A lot of other people have experienced this same issue. I am not going to pay money every time this stupid laptop breaks for the EXACT SAME REASON!

I purchased an HP Envy m6 1105-dx and was very pleased. I take very good care of my laptop and always have it in a sleeve. Shortly after the warranty expired my right hinge suddenly broke on its own. I was able to get HP to have the hinge repaired but lost possession of my laptop for two weeks during final exams. A year later the left hinge has now broken and cracked the side and bottom covers. The hinge bulges out, making it difficult and scary to close/open the laptop. The screen literally hangs at a tilt and the hinge pushes up the speaker housing and upper right corner of the keyboard. I took my laptop to the IT department at my law school to ask what they believed was the cause. Without opening or messing with the laptop they agreed that it was most likely due to a design flaw on the hinges since the right hinge (Hinge repaired previously by HP) is also beginning to break. Did we all pay $700+ to suffer with the constant need to deal with broken hinges? This is very unfortunate since HP has always had a reputable name. Now I am stuck with a $700+ laptop with a completely broken left hinge and a previously HP repaired right hinge that is not too far behind from another break. Does anyone know of any recalls or remedies to solve this issue?

I have an Ideadpad Y500 (Model 20193) running Windows 8.1. It has the original/factory 15gb mSATA SSD and ~1tb conventional SATA HDD. The two drives (SSD and HDD) are managed by Intel Rapid Storage, a sort of software RAID management utility. Although Windows Disk Management (via Control Panel \ Administrative Tools) sees the two drives as separate devices (see below), they are in a RAID, so to normal Windows, they just look like a single HDD. I want to remove the SSD from the RAID. It is throwing frequent errors. My Windows Event Viewer (via Control Panel \ Administrative Tools) is full of hundreds thousands of warnings about problems with the SSD. It is nearing end of life. A few times a day the computer will reboot -- but only when running Windows. When I am running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Linux) it will run for a year without rebooting. I suspect that the Ubuntu installation is bypassing the Intel Rapid Storage software RAID and just directly using the ~1tb SATA HDD (ignoring the 15gb SSD).  I can access the Intel Rapid Storage management program in Windows, but it doesn't give me the option to break apart the RAID; to remove the SSD from the RAID. Supposedly there's a way to access it during POST by pressing ctrl-I, but that doesn't work for me. I can't figure out how to access the Intel Rapid Storage management via BIOS and that's the only place where I could (in theory) break apart the RAID and remove the SSD from the equation.  I realize, of course,... Hello fellow Lenovo users, i will start by saying having been a Lenovo brand user since my X41 in 2006 and having purchased over 8 laptops from the brand based on the rich experiences i have had over the years i am really disapointed at my Y510p i purchased a few years ago. After ownership of 6months i started to notice the screen would flicker as stated by hundreds of other owners.(just type Y510p screen flicker into youtube and see for yourself) I am sure this issue is not new to you  and there are many posts about this. After contact with customer services who constantly tell me it is driver/software related, which it clearly is not i would like to ask why such a prestigious brand such as Lenovo will not admit that this model was shipped with a design fault? I understand that there would be expense involved but after being an avid fan of Lenovo for over 15 years and having purchased over 13 products from tablets for my kids to phones for my wife and the new laptop i buy every 2 years for work, this is small fry. I can never buy another machine from you again now as i have lost all faith in your design/testing and the lack of willingness to accept liability when so many units have the issue makes me sad. This has become a bit of a rant, which i know is not what he forum is about but i feel people should know all the details about a company ethos before they spend their hard earned money on a sub standard machine. (at least in the Y510p)&nb... Read more

So I received my 720s yesterday. i7-8550U, UHD display, 512 SSD. No good. Backlight bleed on the top and bottom left corners (not horrific, but definitely too much for what is sold as the premium display) and the touchpad is clunky. You press in on either side and it clicks, but then goes in further and makes another click sound and tactile response. Has anyone else had similar problems with this model or a similar 720s? I called Lenovo and explained the problems (and they asked me to email them a picture, which I used lightbleedtest.com to display the issue). They told me that they're gonna send me a new machine, and then once I verify that the issue isn't existent on the new one, I'll send the old one back on a prepaid label. At the very least, I'm happy with the customer service and how they run the return process, but I really expected more with the quality control. Curious to see if there's similar issues that are known -- would rather not have to do a full return.

So my story starts with ordering the wrong laptop two weeks ago. I quickly notice this and cancel my request not more than two hours afterword. My cancellation request is ignored and the wrong laptop is sent out to me. Kind of annoying but no big deal. I place an order for the correct laptop Ideapad 520S 14? upon receiving it today I open it up and go to power it and the display is broken. I call technical support and after finally being on hold for 30 minutes when the expected wait time was 4 a representative for Lenovo answers and then hangs up immediately. I call back. Finally get ahold of someone after an additional 15 minutes of waiting. Now I?m being told that there is no estimation on when I?ll be receiving a new laptop. And it could take 1-3 business days just to receive the labels in an email to send this broken laptop back. Completely unexceptable especially since I?m still awaiting a refund from the first laptop that was never cancelled!!! Is there anyone else who has experienced a replacement order and how long it can take? I don?t have forever I may just have to look somewhere else that is more reliable. Thanks
