Clearing the Event Log in Windows 8

Q: Clearing the Event Log in Windows 8

It has been a long, long time since I have wanted to clear the event log and that was under Windows 7. I would like to clear the log under Windows 8 but can find no way to do it. It seems like I remember using 'Clear Log' under Actions but that doesn't seem to be there in Windows 8.

Will someone please point me in the right direction?

Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Clearing the Event Log in Windows 8

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Previous replies noted that the Administrative Events under the Custom view was just a compilation of all the other logs.
I do not belive this is entirely correct as all the events in this log concern the operating system and do NOT appear in the other logs such as Application, Security, etc.
Below is an example of what is showing up on my system after all the individual logs shown under Event Viewer are cleared:

How can you clear the event logs without an event being created stating that the logs were cleared in Powershell? The "clear-eventlog" command does clear the events, however it leaves behind an event that states that the logs were cleared.

If you have a lot of entries in the event logs, depending on your system, it can take a bit to open the logs.  Here is a way to clear all the 4 main event logs quickly.
Open a text editor (e.g. notepad), and copy the following into it.

@echo on
wevtutil.exe cl Application
wevtutil.exe cl Security
wevtutil.exe cl Setup
wevtutil.exe cl System
@echo off
Save it as "clear_logs.bat" (no quotes).  Now, just double click on the file, and all 4 main logs will be cleared.  It will not work on Windows XP.
This will work on Windows 8.1 for sure.  It should work on Windows 8, 7, maybe Vista.
Have a great day!

Hello, I recently tried to filter events of the .NET runtime provider by their event ID. This should be accomplished through enabling the .NET runtime provider with
EVENT_FILTER_TYPE_EVENT_ID flag being set in the EVENT_FILTER_DESCRIPTOR structure, unfortunately the
EnableTraceEx2 function returns 87. If I try to enable the provider with the
EVENT_FILTER_TYPE_SCHEMATIZED flag instead of the EVENT_FILTER_TYPE_EVENT_ID, the provider gets enabled so I came to the conclusion that the
EVENT_FILTER_TYPE_EVENT_ID is the invalid parameter.

Enabling the session:
The LogFileMode member of the EVENT_TRACE_PROPERTIES
AND EVENT_TRACE_PRIVATE_IN_PROC (<- supports this mode scoped filters?).

According to
MSDN enabling scoped filters should be possible for private logging mode sessions or am I missing something?

Alright, started getting the 1001 BugCheck crash with Event 41 Kernel-Power BSOD a few times not long ago, widely spaced out incidents (it will lock up, make a very weird repetitive noise through my stereo speakers and will also get black and white bars across the screen before the blue screen turns up and asks for restart option choice). Memory exception but we need to examine the DMP files to find out why.

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP
We could also use some system information, which you can get easily by running msinfo32.
To do that go to start>run>type msinfo32>enter

When it is finished running go to file>save>name it and upload to us here.
You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb ... Read more

A:"Event Log Explorer" tool helps manage/analyze/report on your Windows Event Logs

I use the subscription to EventID.net. It has been greatly helpful. I don't have this analyser but am a big believer in using the Event Viewer. I'll add a description I have written up which will help in determining the Events: This may be useful in addition to the Event Analyzer.

One thing I have not been able to do is keep the filters set with the software in the OS.

Find the Error(s)in the Event Viewer that correspond to the crash/freeze/error message/blue screen, etc.:

Description of the Event Viewer:

Unfortunately, many Windows XP users aren't aware of the Event Viewer, what it is, where it is, how it can help with a problem:
The Event Viewer has logs for everything that happens on the computer. There are three sets of logs: System, Applications and Security. By opening the first two to display the Events, you can look for Errors that correspond to the time of the problem- in your case, the crash.

There are three types of Events in the System and Apps logs:
1. Information (white circle w/blue i): this is just basic documentation of the normal working of the System or Apps.
2. Warnings (yellow triangle w/black exclamation mark) noting some problem at that moment. Warnings usually resolve on their own. If they do not, they become>>>
3. Errors (red circle w/white X- they document something that didn't work or isn't happening as it should. Each Errors has three parts: an ID#, a Source and a Description. By doing a right clic... Read more

The reason it won't boot now is because the MBR (master boot record) is looking for a partition and OS that is no longer there. If a machine is setup to dual boot and you want to delete one of the OS's, the MBR has to be updated to reflect the new configuration.

I am not big on Windows utilities b/c they never seem to work in my experience, but theoretically if you use a recovery/repair CD for Win7 it should detect the W7 OS and ask if you want it to repair the installation, which would mean repairing the MBR in this case.

I prefer to use third party tools, like Paragon's Hard Disk Manager, which I have burned to a bootable USB stick, but I don't think it's free (can't remember now). But there are many free MBR tools that can be burned to a USB stick or CD.... you will need to boot from one of these if you don't have the Windows repair CD. A utility like this will repair the MBR and allow you to boot again.

This might help: https://www.raymond.cc/blog/5-free-t...ot-record-mbr/

I have File History set up and working fine. I know how to run a "Clean up Versions" and have done that several times. My question is as follows:
I have a directory called "Photos" I dump my photos in that directory and it gets copied across via File History to an external drive. Later on I rename these files based on the subject and date of the photo and move then to individual sub directories ie "Cars", "Flowers", etc. It may be a while before I do this so I want the files copied via File History. Once I have done the rename, etc the new files are moved via File History. However when I delete the files from the "Photos" directory they do not get deleted from the File History on the external drive. I know this is what they are supposed to do so that if I accidentally delete them I can restore them. But how do I delete them from the File History. Do I just wait 1 month and then run the "keep saved versions" to 1 month and let the system do what it would normally do and delete information. The problem would be that it would delete ALL files that were more then 1 month old. Would any files that are more then 1 month old and was deleted be copied across when I next run File History knowing that they have not been updated in that time ie old letter files, old photos in the sub directories?

File History has never been perfect. You would be better off using a sync utility like the All my Storage app, if you are going to manually transfer files. If you want automated, there are better utilities out there than File History.

Restart in safe mode

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK".

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and history in Internet Options. And clean out your c:\documents and settings\%Userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp
folder, do this for every profile on the machine. Also check for c:\temp and c:\winnt\temp, empty those as well. It's a good idea to do that regularly.

Hi guys,
I've been troubleshooting my MSI Laptop GE40 for quite awhile now, but I am just unable to find a solution online.

My laptop is running Windows 8.1, I was doing some cleaning up for my laptop using Disk Cleanup.

After running Disk Cleanup (With System Files), Windows Update files were showing 425mb. However, after checking it and it completed, it will still show 425mb if I run it again.

I've tried the following solutions from online, but it didn't work:
1. Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (Came across this solution via "EightForums")
2. SFC /Scannow
3. ChkDisk
4. Microsoft FixIt (Windows update)
5. Disk Cleanup (Safe Mode / Administrator account)
It is quite annoying to have this issue surfacing, and the last thing I would do, is to reformat my laptop.
I would appreciate if someone can assist me on this issue. Thanks.

How do I clear the history log from WMP? I recently noticed that the clips WMP is listing are clips from 4 or days ago, and as I watch new clips they never are added to the list. I am running Windows XP Pro and I think I have WMP Version 8.

I have hundreds of these errors for event id's 1026,1049 and 1059, I have searched and cannot find anything remotely associated with these errors or the cause of them:

The description for Event ID 1026 from source Internet Explorer cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
There all have the same information and event log online help does not "help" , any ideas?

A:Event ID 1026 ,Event ID 1049 and Event ID 1059

I think Iv'e answered my own question:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd565650(v=vs.85).aspx error 1049
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd565667(v=vs.85).aspx error 102
Would someone be able to check this is correct?
thanks very much

Hi there!

I have been trying to combine rar files to make one big one....what i found was the extention wasn't named correctly (.000 should have been .r00) ....I have fixed that but I messed up previously trying to right click/open with/selected win rar ...now i can do anything with the two files I tried to open with like that.....one is a 003 file and the other a 004 file....so anytime it sees them it changes the icon not to a rar file but a stange icon mixed between rar and a notepad ...thats the best description i can come up with!

What I need to know is there a way to clear windows history of what programs to open files with? I can change it to another program but I fear it won't change anything
I basically want to 'reset' its memory if thats the word then i will be in the clear
I can then rename the file and compile away

A:Clearing windows memory of which programs to open files with?

Hi animal28

You should be able to change that in the Folder Options:
Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab
Scroll down and select the extension you want to change, you can then either change the association by clicking the Change button and selecting the desired program, or edit using the Advanced button.

If you created a File Type/extension, such as .000 it can be deleted, Windows will ask what program you want to use, to open the file.
As a precaution, note the information contained for the File Type before deleting.

Let us know if that works for you or not.

The situation:
Using windows explorer to access a shared network resource, for example, \\blah\folder\folder2 - the first time I try this on a new installation, it requires authentication (user/pass) which I provide (this is on a workgroup, not a domain). That's fine.
The goal:
I want a way to force Windows 7 Pro to forget the authentication and ask for a new authentication next time an access is attempted for that share.
Here's what I have tried, and what has not worked:
Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Disconnect Network Drive (it doesn't work because there is no mapped network drive to disconnect; next connection attempt does not ask for authentication)
From command prompt (run As administrator): rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr -- Then select any network share to clear credentials for, then click delete button. (no network shares listed; next connection attempt does not ask for authentication)

From command prompt (run As administrator): net use * /delete /yes
(nothing happens; next connection attempt does not ask for authentication)
From command prompt (run As administrator): control userpasswords2
Go to advanced tab, click on manage passwords. This brings up the credential manager (can also get to credential manager directly from control panel). Find credentials to delete (windows, certificate-based, or generic) - there are currently none listed, though there had been earlier, and all were deleted. No change; next connection attempt does not ask for authentica... Read more

I upgraded a machine running Vista to Windows 7. Now when I try to clear the cookies using that feature on Internet Explorer, they don't clear. I have to delete them manually.

I am also having a problem with installing updates for programs like Adobe and the error I get is that the installer did not have permission to modify a file in a folder, but when I check the permissions for that folder, everyone has access to and can modify the folder's files.

I am not sure if the two issues are related, but it seems to me that maybe Internet Explorer for some reason doesn't have permission to modify the cookies folder maybe?

Any thoughts?

A:Internet Explorer not clearing cookies after Vista upgraded to Windows 7

If you want to clear cookies use something like ATF Cleaner or CCleaner if you have trouble with IE try Mozilla Firefox or if you prefer IE try reinstalling it.

My computer was infected by "Windows xp fix" malware. Following a online guide, the malware was cleared by <Malwarebytes? Anti-Malware> , and then the file shortcuts were recovered by < Unhide.exe >. After these procedures, my computer seems ok except when browsing with IE it is slow and some hidden programs seem running occasionally. Also, "google redirect" occurs and there is no sound when playing videos in IE.

Hello everyone,
I'm developing a "Security information and event management" software (SIEM) for Windows and I need to collect logs from computer sources running Windows OS. I have found the "Windows Event Collector" service and "Windows Event Log"
service can suitable for our project. I want to ask that the logs collected by Windows Event Collector or Windows Event Log will be more detailed. Thank you so much.

Not sure when this started but I wanted to check out a problem on this system and when I went to do some filtering on the event logs the Event Sources section was empty. I can filter by event level, I can filter by Event IDs but if I try any of the drop
downs, Event sources or Keywords the lists are blank.

Any suggestions?

Hi, all. I have been trying to figure out a serious of issues that my PC has been having. It's possible they were caused by poorly seated RAM, but the RAM seems to check out now. There is a whole slew of details on the case here: TechNet with a lot more information that will be of help, including posted evtx files. I have always gotten great help here, though, and am in dire need of a second opinion, so I thought I would check with this forum's experts. Here is the basic gist, although there is a ton more detail on the other link:Since building this machine, I've had frequent BSODs, often seemingly-related to middle of the night MSE updates, or possibly other windows updates. These always required a System Restore to recover from, as Windows was unbootable. Often it said the Restore failed, but it seemed to resolved the bootability issue at least.I have removed MSE and reseated some RAM that initially tested poorly, but which now seems to be passing MemTest no problem.I still have a series of issues that occur, and the one that was causing noticeable issues was SuperFetch causing sysmain.dll to fault (Event 1000, posted below) on every boot and periodically throughout the day. I have disabled SuperFetch, which stopped the issue from happening every boot, but it still happens occasionally, so it seems SuperFetch is but one trigger. The other most common error I have is Event 55 (posted below), possibly related to Windows Backup and/or System Restore, which seems ...
