Only one of two SATA drives showing in 7

Q: Only one of two SATA drives showing in 7

Just installed new motherboard, two hard drives (SATA). After installing Windows 7 I can only see one of the hard drive. I think they both show up on the startup stuff. What's happening? Gigabyte Motherboard, Award bios. I have two old hard drives (IDE) that I can see. One IDE header. 5 SATA headers.

Preferred Solution: Only one of two SATA drives showing in 7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been reading about issues with people having problems with their SSD's not being reconized by Windows 7 Ultimate...but my WD 600gig STAT III Raptor is listed as a SCSI as well. I assume the problem is with my Marvell Driver.

I bought this 60gig OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III drive for a Boot drive and had a pain installing drivers for it on a clean install of windows. I plugged it, and my WD Raptor both into the 2 SATA III ports that I have on my ASUS Rampage III MB. I set the Drives to ACHI not IDE. Tried to install Windows, had to force windows to accept the Marvell Drivers...but finally got it installed.

Now Im stuck with the OCZ SSD and the Raptor both at SCSI speeds...not able to get them reconized my Windows 7 Ult as SATA drives.

Should I try uninstalling the Marvell and JBMicron drivers and let Windows try and install drivers that will work? Funny thing is, I know that windows is reconizing the SSD as a SSD because of the Disk Defrag has been disabled on it...and was able to get some info off the drive via Intels SSD toolbox....OCZ's tool box wont reconize it unless you use Windows drivers. I had to install the Marvell Drivers to install Windows, Windows wouldn't reconize either drive plugged into the SATA III ports.

Anyway, if anyone could help out I would greatly appreciate it. I've tried bout everything, even tried the reg. fix via the Windows Helper with no luck.

Thanks in advance.

I have two separate instances of Win8 running on two separate IDE hard drives (both Win8's restored from same exact backup image).

The one on the hard drive comected to the SATA port (via an adaptor) runs fine, but the one on the IDE connection (motherboard's only one), does not respond properly when a manual shutdown is initiated. Instead of shutting down the PC, it goes into sleep mode. This does not happen if an application (my backup software, for instance) is set to perform a shutdown after completing it's job. Only affecting manual shutdowns, but all of them.

So I am wondering if Win8 is lacking an IDE driver of some kind, and if there is a way to deternine this.

Seems strange to me that while both hard drives are IDE "underneath the hood", that the one connected throgh an adaptor is more easily being recognized by Win8, and curious if there is an easy fix.

I have 2 IDE HDs installed and added SATA drive lately. SATA runs in IDE mode in CMOS. Problem is, even though SATA drive is recognized by BIOS, Disk Manager, Norton Ghost & System Works, it doesn't show in My Computer, causing problems with saving and opening files. Tried a couple of tricks (changing the drive letter, disconnecting & reconnecting the drive, reformatting etc. ) nothing seems to work. I use this SATA drive for storage and for now I have to drag the files down there manually.
I don't know if it's of any importance, but I have nVidia GeForce graphics card onboard.
Has anyone encountered this kind of a problem ?
Thanks Carl

I have just built a new computer, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, however, I've noticed when I open Windows explorer, 3 out of 4 times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed. I've tried reformatting, using different hard drives, but the problem persists no matter what I do. I've reinstalled Windows 7 with only a single drive plugged in, tried different SATA ports, but this problem keeps coming back. The only thing I can think of is that the Windows 7 install disk is corrupted and not installing properly.

I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this, the icons wont display in any folder, although the file names will. Likewise, when trying to sort files by date, type, etc, they will not sort.

When this happens, I can easily type in C:\ to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing, sorting, etc still is a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? Know of a way to fix this? I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after.

Hi: we have a Supermicro server with an Intel C600 series controller and we would like to use some of the ports and their disks as removable devices, to allow to copy media from one server to another. I mean:
- The controller has 4 ports with 4 disk on each, 16 disks in total
- The first 4 ports will remain the same, not removable (OS in Raid 1, Media in Raid 0)
- The other ports (2-4) will be used with SATA SSD drives and we need to remove them via Eject hardware (as an attached hard drive) and then being able to attach them to the backup server to read the media.

So far as I know, there's a DWORD I may need to add in the registry, but a little help would be more than welcome to solve this.

This is the opposite way, to not allow the HDD to be ejected.

Thanks in advance!

I have a pc that has 2 400g hard drives in raid 0. The motherboard is bad and needs to be replaced. The drives in raid 0 are sata drives; I want to mirror the drives onto 2 400g pata drives before replacing the mobo so in case of disaster I would still have all the info. What would be the best way for me to do this? I have another machine running that has raid capability but is not using it. It has 4 sata connections and 2 ide drive connections, currently only using the 2 ide connections and no raid. I have Partition Magic 8 and Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8 Pro. Is it possible for me to use my current up and running system, and one of the 2 software programs to mirror these drives?

A:Can I copy sata raid 0 drives to pata drives?

MOBO is bad and you still want to recover info which might get corrupted in the transfer process.

very bizarre :
- 3 of my 6 drives SATA connected to internal SATA connectors on board ( Z87 Deluxe)
- are shown in explorer "my computer" as hard disks ( while correctly DVD and USB are in removable drives list)
- however these 3 drives appear in the list of removable drives Under the W7 utility "safely remove" !

That could lead to confusion when removing removable drives !

Any explanation ? Can I correct this ?

I think that it is possible that these drives have been formatted and partitioned whiel on a SATA-to USB dock ( when PC was Under repair). Have tried to delete all partitions on one of those drives, and recreate partitions Under W7 with Acronis Disk Director, but no change.
Or should I remove them from Computer Management ?

TIA for help please !

A:SATA drives : internal appear as External drives !

It is not bizarre but a result of drives being connected to ports that allow hot swapping (set to AHCI)

One possibility is to install the Intel AHCI drivers instead of the stock drivers that are part of the Windows 7 DVD.

Another is this:

FIX: AHCI/SATA drives showing in "Safely Remove Hardware"

This works for the Intel controller.

If you are connected to another controller, go to the Device manager and right click on that controller and select properties.

Then under the Policies tab, you should be able to uncheck the box that allows safe removal.

Hi all. I'm hoping someone could help me with this issue. I just finished putting together my computer, installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bits. However, both of my hard drives (one SSD, one regular HDD) are showing up as external drives (plug-and-play). If I click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, I could actually "eject" both of my hard drives. I've searched on Google for clues, but it wasn't helpful. If anyone has any idea on how to fix this, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You have to enable write caching for your internal hard disk.- Click on Start Menu.- Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.- Locate your hard disk under Disc Drives in the list in Device Manager.- Double-click on your hard disk.- Select Policies tab.- Check the checkbox Enable write caching on this device- Click OK.

I have a custom build desktop with 2 internal drives a 'Samsung SSD 840 Pro' and a 'Seagate Barracuda ST32000641AS'

I decided to format my PC using the Windows 7 boot disk, but noticed when choosing what drive to install my OS to, both of my drives types are labeled as System Drives, I decided to go ahead anyway and install my OS to my SSD, but after completing installation, Disk Management shows both of my drives as Active drives. I have searched a bit online and it seems that only my C drive should be an Active drive, does this have anything to do with both of my drives being read as System Drives at the start of installation. What would be the reason for both of my drives being Active? I have no problems with reformatting if needed.

Only one drive should be active and this is where your boot info should be located
You can mark the drive inactive following this tutorial Partition - Mark as Inactive

I currently have 2 PATA hard drives installed in my system that both run off the same IDE ribbon cable. My MSI MS-7184 motherboard has 2 SATA connections and 2 SATA power supplies available. Would I benefit much by upgrading my hardrives to SATA ones? One of them holds the operating system and programs etc (160GB) and the other stores my mp3's (320GB). Would there be much speed gained or not enough for me to notice? Also would data be transferred faster if my PATA drives had one IDE cable each instead of sharing one? I seem to have 2 IDE connections on the motherboard.

Bought a LG Blu-ray internal sata rewriter. Installed it and windows 7 found it first time. So far so good.
Put windows into sleep mode and when I woke it up the sata drive was missing.
The drive was not only missing, but the tray failed to manually open and the activity light did not illuminate.
Drive totally dead. Check all power and sata cables all ok.
Done a full reboot and drive came back ok

This only happens when the machine is put into sleep mode. Sata drivers all up to date and all cables 100%.
Turn the machine fully off or restart and everything works ok each time. Use sleep mode and it fails when you bring the m/c to life.

Has anyone had a similar problem and how can it be put right? I use ( well I did ) the sleep mode quite a lot and this has become a bit of a pain.

Hello all,

After quite a bit of searching, I'd be immensely grateful for any advice on the following external HD problem.

After a bump to my Western Digital Elements 3TB external drive (from above - it wasn't dropped), it is no longer recognised in Explorer. I've tried the usual Disk Management trick and it's not showing there either.

The symptom is that once the adapter lead is plugged into the back of the HD, it makes the usual quiet upward whirring sound as if it's about to spin up, but does nothing after that (there's usually a small "rumbling" noise following drive spin-up where they're reading the data, but there's none on this drive). The power light then blinks indefinitely with no sign of life in Explorer/Disk Management.

After looking at the costly option of data recovery (295 UK price), I started seeing a few tech sites that suggest removing the SATA drive from it's enclosure and either using a SATA Reading Dock, or going one step further and finding a replacement Western Digital PCB chipboard (ensuring the batch code/serial on the WD drive matches the PCB being used) and swapping this over to retrieve the data.

I'm not interested in fixing up my drive for continuous use (to be honest, I no longer trust the WD drive even though the impact was my fault), but would very much like to retrieve the data. My entire music collection (including my former CD collection) is on there, and besides the fact that... Read more

A:External HD not showing. Will a SATA dock help?

I'm guessing you forgot to make that all important backup of your data?

The dock will only help IF the damage is to the enclosure, either the USB port or the converter electronics, this is a possibility. Swapping the circuit board will ONLY help IF the drive's electronics are damaged, this is unlikely. If the damage is to the platters inside the drive then neither one of those will help, this is also very possible since the drive was physically bumped.

A:need help with sata drives

Seagate comes with a CD, the Sea tools disk. have you used that? there is a step by step wizzard that will walk you through the process. If so, RT click on my computer -> manage -> disk managemaent and see if your drives are there. And here is the dumb part... Go back inside and recheck that the power and signal cables are installed properly. I know this sounds dumb but trust me, just do it anyway. I have installed a lot of drives, and every once in a while I may miss somthing. So take the extra 5 and re-check it. Check the BIOS to see if the BIOS will find the drive. If BIOS doen't find the drive and say somthing like s3556456 for example, then It is most likely a hardware problem. see if that fixes the problem.

Can anyone tell me if there is a performance difference between 1st generation and 2nd generation sata drives?

A:Sata drives

I suspect that's going to depend on the specific drive in question. Although SATA-II has a faster interface speed, until the drives are fast enough to make that meaningful, transfer speeds won't change much. IMO, the biggest difference in new SATA drives is NCQ (Native Command Queuing), which optimizes the access to the disk when multiple requests are pending. This won't make any difference with a single thread mass file transfer, but with multiple tasks hitting the disk, it will optimize the speed of access for all tasks.

Hello everyone.
I'm saving money for a new harddisk at the moment, I'm planning to replace one of my IDE harddisks with a SATA drive.
At the moment I have these harddisks:
- Maxtor 30GB (pretty old, gonna replace this one)
- Maxtor 120GB (should be fine)

So, I was planning on getting a Maxtor or Western Digital 200GB SATA 300 hard disk. I was wondering about some stuff though...

What setup would be best? Since I'm keeping my 120GB IDE drive, well, I think I should use that one mainly for storage, don't you think? It's a slower drive after all, and the SATA drive should be fast and big enough to store both Windows and games. Hmm.. then it would be best to put the page file on that drive too, I guess. Maybe it's better to make a separate partition on that SATA drive.
Oh, and does the Windows XP setup support SATA drives? Would be a bummer if it wouldn't be able to detect it.
Yeah, and lastly, what is better, Maxtor or Western Digital?

Thanks in advance!

A:Can someone help me with SATA drives?

I'll ask the stupid question first, just to confirm....

Your motherboard supports SATA drives right?

As for whether or not windows will detect your drive, the quick answer is probably. I would do a search for your motherboard and see if you can find someone who is using the same one as you, and who has a SATA drive installed and working. Nice to confirm ahead of time.

Maxtor or WD? If you have a high end system that can make use of the fast HDD speeds, you can get a 10,000 rpm raptor. But I am perfectly happy with my 7200rpm maxtor drives. Good prices and good speed for my needs. I did, however, go for 16mb cache.

So I hooked up my older Hitachi Deskstar 120 GB harddrive that I had to my IDE connection on my new Gigabyte motherboard. I unplugged my SATA drive, set RAID settings under BIOS to ATA instead of SATA, then inserted my Windows XP disk into my CDROM drive and started the computer. The XP startup starts, installs the initial drivers, then when it tries to start installing Windows, I get a blue screen STOP error. What could be the problem? I tried using my other IDE drive I had (Hitachi 200GB Deskstar) and the same problem happens. Yet, when I start Windows on my SATA drive, both ATA drives appear in Windows and I can access them. I am able to install windows without any problems on my Hitachi 120 if I do it on another computer, but it worries me that I can't do it on my new one. Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have aquired a computer with both sata (at least one) and 2 ide connections. Currently the computer has only one sata drive.
The intention is to remove and preserve the sata drive.
I have only ide drives available.
Is it possible to have ONLY ide drives installed and be able to boot and install windows on one of those.
My previous computers were not capable of using sata drives - this is new to me.
Thanks for any help provided.

hello i am currently trying to dual boot xp with my current vista. My problem arises once i try to install xp. it cannot detect my Hard drive. I have read and read and found i have three options, 1 go into bios and switch it to ide emulation, but my bios does not have any feature to change anything hard drive related. 2 i can use a floppy-usb to feed xp the drivers but i dont have a floppy usb and dont wish to buy it just for a one time use. or 3 i can slipstream the drivers for sata in to xp myself, which i tried but obviously failed because the bootable disc i created still had the detect hard drive problem, is that maybe i had the wrong driver? or maybe that i need to download the driver on an xp desktop and make it on that computer? so how can i get the drivers for my xp and slip them in to work?
my hard drive is a TOSHIBA MK1637GSX , if anone can tell me which/where drivers and maybe a step by step guide on how to integrate it into xp, that would be amazing because i'm getting really tired of this waisted tons of cds and download so much junk.

Hello folk. We have a problem getting a fairly old PC desktop (born about 2005, mobo Foxconn 925 XE7AA), to see both SATA and PATA IDE drives. The SATA drives are seen, but when we put the IDE in, that is not seen. We have tried it on Cable Select, Master and Slave, switched cables, cursed and scratched heads - still not seen. We also seem to have lost sight of one of the optical drives, and that remains invisible even after we took the IDE out again. The main system, on SATA of course, is Windows 7, the IDE is simply a storage drive which worked perfectly on the XP machine we have migrated from. Any ideas on what the solution might be please?

On the motherboard, have you tried setting the IO to AHCI mode for the SATA devices?

I know there are multiple modes available, but i can't remember which is which without checking it

I am building a new computer and have installed a Seagate SATA HD. When I boot to the WinXP CD to install XP, and press F6 and point it to the diskette that has the drivers and choose the driver, it goes through the install until it gets to the list of hard drives and it says that I do not have any hard drives installed.

I have confirmed that the drive is installed properly. BIOS is recognizing it and if I put an IDE drive with XP on the machine, under disk management, it also recognizes the drive.

Any ideas on why the XP install program doesn't recognize the drive? Thanks!
