Win-L locks to Welcome Screen, but auto-lock goes to "Unlock this Computer"

Q: Win-L locks to Welcome Screen, but auto-lock goes to "Unlock this Computer"

Whenever I press Win-L, it locks to my welcome screen and stays locked like that, even if my screensaver comes up. But when my computer automatically locks after 5 min. it goes to the "Unlock this Computer" dialog box.

Is there anyway to change the auto-lock to my welcome screen?

Preferred Solution: Win-L locks to Welcome Screen, but auto-lock goes to "Unlock this Computer"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For the past few days, I have had my xp lock up showing the classic logon popup window; within every 5 mins or so. It is driving me crazy!

It is NOT my screen saver settings, as I do not use that, and have checked to be sure it is NOT ON.

It is more like someone is hitting the win logo key + L every 5 mins or so... Only difference is that if "I" hit the win logo key + L , it will lock my system up and bring me to my "welcome" logon screen. This is happening much the same way, except the "classic" logon popup window comes up when my system locks; I have not changed my logon from the "welcome" screen, and I am NOT hitting the win logo + L keys. Argh!

I have had to remove my logon password so I can just hit the enter button to get back to what I was doing each time this happens. Ugh! Every 5 mins I am idle, so I can't sit here to read without this happening, or view any videos either. I have to be physically keyboarding to not have this occurr. I have searched all over to figure out how to disable it, but to no avail.

Please help.... I am going out of my mind here...

Any help would be sooooo much appreciated.

Hey there,

I installed a program on 15th March 2009 called MyFolder Manager, which allowed me to password protect particular files or folders on my computer

It was a free program, and their help section lists this as their website, though it doesnt seem to be of any real help: http://virtual-protect.com/

I have a folder which contains ALL my passwords for accounts here there and everywhere, be they bank accounts, online casino/betting accounts, or just email accounts.

I've never had a problem with the program, but when i tried opening the folder today, i was met by a message reading:

"Location is not available
C:\Users\Zazkad\Desktop\Important Documents is not accessible.
Access is denied."

I've tried my best to find other ways at getting around this problem, but regardless of what i try to do, it won't let me access the files within that folder in any way. And i REALLY need access to that folder soon, it's really important to me!

I would greatly appreciate some help on this matter

Hope everyone had a merry christmas and a happy new year.

I have a password on my windows user account. Whenever I leave my computer, I "lock" my computer ('windows key' + L). The "unlock computer" dialog by default centers itself on the screen, but I have been wondering for a while now if there is something I can change in the registry (or something) that will let me decide where that window will appear when I lock my computer. As of now, because of the background I have set, I'd like it to appear near the top-right corner.

Any ideas?

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=242917. This will explain it all. I have did what it says to do but nothing works. I am the only one who uses my computer at home and I don't have it locked. When the message shows it will let me click ok without putting my administrater password, (which I have no idea what it is anyway!) I have tried to change screensavers and all (my official screensaver is my pictures slideshow) but I have no clue at what to do! Can someone help me with this problem? I have windows xp pro. And I can't figure out how it did all this!
Thanks for reading, Harley Babe

A:Administrator Unable to Unlock a "Locked" Computer

That you can click okay without entering a password and have it work just means that you do not have a password on your account.
As they say, the problem is caused by a bad screensaver.
You need to remove that one.
Have you tried changing the screensaver to none and then change all settings to always on ?
Did you do the registry edit microsoft tells you to do there?
What about boot to safe mode and change the screensaver?

I have 2 issues that have shown up on my PC.

HJT Log follows the description of both issues.

I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad R61i (7732/A12), Vista Ultimate w/SP2, 2GB RAM. Security is Windows Live Onecare. All O/S patches up-to-date.

Issue 1: Random Sound

Periodically the system will start playing random sounds. The sounds have been song clips, or synthesized cat meows. Not files from my computer (heaven forbid!). If I close my browser (Firefox 3.0.11), the sounds will stop. I have already checked Firefox add-ons, which are: "Down Them All", "Move Media Player" and "Speed Dial". All are up-to-date.

Issue 2: Random "lock computer and go to login screen"

If I leave my computer for a short time (less than 5 minutes) periodically the system will lock the computer and go to the login screen.

I am not talking about a system / browser / application lock-up.
I am talking about the system leaving the user logged in, but going to the login screen. To get a visual of what I am talking about, press <CTRL><ALT><DELETE> and select "Lock This Computer" (or press windows-L).

Screen saver is set to "None".
Current power plan is "Timers off (Presentation)"

If I have not been specific enough, I greatly apologize.

I am very grateful to all of you who volunteer to help.

At work I constantly run into an issue of someone who has logged into a computer and instead of logging out they just left it on and walked away causing the computer to lock or manually locking it themself. Some terminals will have a button which says "Other Credentials" while sometimes that button is unavailable. Why is this and how do I fix it so I don't have to kill the power every time a computer is locked? I've searched everywhere and there have been other people asking this question and the answer is, "log in as administrator and unlock the computer." How do I log in as administrator if I can't even get somewhere to enter an account name?

It's driving me nuts.

A:How do I unlock a computer with no "Other Credentials" button?

Mike, you'll have to ask the "how come?"question to those who are the Administrators of the computers and those who own the network Domain...

If the "user" connected to the Domain doesn't log out, then you're faced with telling them what they need to do.

If you're the Domain's IT, then you need to have a "dialog" with owner's permission to accomplish your 'job'.

Hi: After downloading the Microsoft updates for July I was instructed to restart my computer. I did, however, at just about the end of the startup, Windows just stopped and the PC locked up. No error messages from Windows. I rebooted again with the same results. I then chose to boot with the last good configuration. This worked fine, and all programs were running normally. However, I still am unable to do a normal boot; just the last good configuration. It seems to me that whatever problem I'm having has to do with personal settings, because it's only during the last few seconds of what would be a normal boot that Windows (XP SP3 fully patched) just stops, and I'm unable to do anything. I know that Windows only uses the control set settings on the last good configuration and the rest of the registry hives are unchanged. Is there a way to bring the registry back into sync so that things return to normal during a regular startup? Thanks for any help you can provide. -SA Jack .

Recently, my laptop has been behaving strangely, in that it does not hibernate. Instead, when I press the power button (which I have designated for hibernation in the Power Options) or select hibernation from the Start menu, the computer simply goes into the login screen for my username, as if I had selected "switch user."

I am unsure as to what the cause is, or if it is in relation to a hardware problem.

Since the specifications listed on my profile are incorrect in regards to the laptop, I'll post the correct ones here:

Lenovo N100 3000 Laptop
Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2080 running at 1.73 GHz
160 GB hard disk drive

I do understand that probably 1/2 of the information regarding specifications is highly irrelevant, but I am posting it anyways in the even that it has a correlation (or causation) with the problem with hibernation.

Thanks for help.

Hello! I'm using Windows 8.1 on my PC, Home Edition I believe. And I've run into a strange issue where I try and update the image for my Lock screen, but the only time I see the new image is when I shut down and start up my computer. Whenever I sign out of my account, the "old" lock screen is what appears. I've tried searching Google for solutions that have included looking in the Registry editor and manually resetting the System Data folder by deleting it and letting Windows make it new. However, the change clearly is saved in the system as it does show up when I start the computer up. Further, whenever I go to PC settings, it is always properly "set" to the new image, it simply doesn't show it when I sign out. Any idea what the problem might be?

I'm running Windows 8 Pro 32 bit.

A message came up saying that Windows has to reboot to install an update. The screen went blue with white text saying "Restarting" with a circle of white dots moving around next to it. It stayed that way for about 10 minutes, so I shut the computer off and restarted it manually. Then it became stuck a blue screen saying "Please wait" for an hour or so. If I restart it either becomes stuck on the "Please wait" screen again or it becomes stuck on a screen that says something like "Configuring windows. Do not turn off your computer."

I've tried to access safe mode by holding shift and mashing F8, but this does nothing. I've also tried to boot from my windows disc (when it says "press any key to boot from CD/DVD I press keys on the keyboard), but this doesn't change anything. My keyboard seems to be recognized, because something popped up asking if I want to turn on sticky keys. Pressing ctrl+alt+delete or hitting the windows key does nothing, however. I can also move my mouse cursor around on the screen, but going to the corners of the screen does not bring up any menus.

In older Windows OS's, I remember you had the "Maintenance Wizard" that let you do a disk cleanup, scandisk, and a defrag all on a regular schedule, and 100% automated (no intervention).

How do I accomplish this in XP-Pro SP2? I tried to put the "dfrg.exe" in the Scheduled Tasks, and it opens it, but it requires user input to actually start defragging (you still have to manually click the "defrag" button, or it won't do anything). Does it involve the Command Prompt?

Recently, specifically 11/23/2016, my computer started shutting off by itself. At first, I thought it was a problem with the internal fan. So, I bought some compressed air and used that to remove the dust from my fan. When that didn't work, I thought it was a virus. So, I ran tons of virus scans and still came up with nothing. My computer was virus-free. It wasn't until today that I realized my laptop turned off every time I pressed caps lock. I didn't discover it before because I must've pressed it by accident and not realized. Also, my caps lock button used to light up when activated, but now it doesn't light up at all. I think there might be a short in my hardware, but I'd really like someone elses' opinion before I assume the worst. When I go To Control Panel And Make The Keyboard Easier To Use. And I Tried to disable Sticky keys. So If Anyone Could Help me fix it i would really appreciate it.

The keyboard itself could have physical damage or just failed, I'd start by trying an external keyboard and if all is well then I'd remove the internal keyboard and inspect for liquids or a damaged cable. Laptop keyboards are generally pretty cheap and easy to replace.

Hello All,

I just received a brand new computer a few days ago from CyberPower PC. I've attached the specs below.

That being said, I noticed a problem when I was "in a game" and within an hr, the fan revved up, and the computer shut down to black screen (monitor read "no input"). Thinking this was a one-off, I tried again, and the same symptoms persist - after playing for some time, the screen goes blank (no error messages), the fan rev's up, and requires a hard reboot. As an FYI, I paid Cyberpower to OC this computer for me. No error message whatsoever.

Next, during one of the "hard reboots", a message popped up before windows that said the setting were unstable, and that I had to reduce my clock speed down - so I clicked accept (there were no other options to potentially ignore this message).

Here are the steps I've taken to date:
1. Upgrade the MOBO / GPU drivers.
2. Plugged the system directly into the outlet to ensure adequate power (as opposed to power bar).
3. Ensured RAM and GPU was seated properly.
4. Ran MEMTEST - no issues.
5. Ran Prime 95 -> Torture Test -> Blend - Causes a "FATAL ERROR" every time as per below:

"FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4"
"Hardware failure detected - consult stress.txt file"
Torture Test Completed 181 Tests in 2 hrs 57 minutes - 1 error, 0 warnings" .

Seems like a thermal shutdown to me. When CPU/GPU overheats, the system either reduces their clock in order to cool them down or does a hard shutdown to protect the hardware. You said you OCed your hardware. Make sure that your are running the CPU/GPU at stock clocks and not overcloking them and also make sure the cooling system is working properly (ie, the fans) and air is flowing good. I thought I was computer savvy until this problem came up. When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. No error messages or anything, just nothing. I have viewed a few of the threads covering this and a common link was the hijack this result. I have posted that here, and really hope that someone can help me with this. I have run SpyBotSD and adaware, I have run mutiple virus scans, I did an SFC, and the final thing was to repair windows using the original disk, none of which has help. I am running Window XP w/SP2. Any other suggestions would be certainly appreciated. Hope to here from someone soon. MTCS, out.

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

Ok, so basically, whenever I turn the computer on, 3 error messages appear:

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee.exe

- A virtual driver failed to inicialize DLL. Chose close to end the program. H:/Windows/system32/code/pRee1.exe

- Error loading H:/Archiv~/GBPLUG~/gbiehcef.dll. Couldn't find specific module.

(sorry if some terms are incorrect, my computer is in Spanish, to I tried to translate as best as possible)

Please help me solve this terrible problem, it is really getting me on my nerves! (oh, and if this helps, I've recently donwloaded this so called "Limewire acceleration", and whenever I ran the setup, it didn't work. I don't really remember the name of the website I downloaded it from, sorry...)

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Now this problem is a real head scratcher for me, and I doubt anyone can help, but I was wondering if anyone has come across this.

I am running an IBM Thinkpad R40. ON occasion, the caps lock button will act as if it is on, when it will in reality be off. There is a light up on the monitor that shows when it is on and off, and the light will show "on", but it will be acting as if the caps lock button is "off". This makes it impossible to type in web addresses. because I cannot type up a period, only an ">".

Two other problems I started having. In Eudora, I will press the send button as I hold down the shift key, and an option window will pop up that will allow me to send the e-mail at a later date. But lately, I have just been pressing the "download mail" button, and the option window pops up as if I am already holding down the shift key, but I am not.

Last problem. I will try to highlight and copy, and there are times when I cannot seem to control the touchpad. I will highlight something, then will try to reverse it, take away the highlighting by pressing on the "mouse" button(I am not using a mouse, I don't know what you call it on a Thinkpad), and it will not reverse, it will not disappear like it should. In fact, it will not leave at all. In order to get rid of the highlighting, I will just have to click entirely out of the window.

I have contacted IBM, they tried getting back to me once, but were unsuccessful.... Read more

I would like to know how I get the password for "system unlock" in my bios? It's not in the manual or documenation.

A:XPS14 Ultrabook how to "system unlock" in bios

You must place a voice phone call to Dell support.  Be prepared with your ownership registration details and since the system is almost certainly out of warranty, a credit card to pay for the support call.

Hi members,
I need your favour to recommend a software or a method to crack protected Microsoft Word file. The password is set under "Protect Document" not the password to open file. Therefore, I was able to open file but just could not amend and make changes in the content. I hope it explains all. Thank you.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

I'm trying to fix my brother's computer after he opened a trojan attached to an email. The email was the one saying your credit card had been charged for airline tickets.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 3100 running Windows XP SP2.

The first problem is that after normal login there is a blue screen with a yellow window in the window with the message

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

There are no icons visible. The only action I can perform is CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Windows Task Manager. I told my brother to start in Safe Mode from which he scanned the computer using AVG Free Edition which was installed before the infection. This did not fix the problem.

Starting Safe Mode I now get a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners and the operating system name at top. The blue login screen then comes up with Administrator and my brothers account. I click on Administrator and I get the same black screen as before with Safe Mode in the corners and the writing at top. My brothers account does the same. There are no icons or Start button visible.

Again, the only program I can bring up is the Windows Task Manager. Using that, I managed to install and run SmitfraudFix which was given as a solution to "Spyware detected" screen. After rebooting this did not fix the problem. I also installed SpyHunter 3.5.11 which found Zlob.Trojan, Rogue.AntivirusXP 2008 plus some other ... Read more

I made a business invoice with the default Excel template and it fits my needs. However, all of the text formatting options are greyed out, which leaves me only with the ability to enter text. I'd like to be able to do a little formatting within the default template just to jazz up the look a bit but can't for the life of me find an option to "unlock" the template so it will allow for some text formatting. Is there a way to do this?

A:How do I "unlock" a premade Excel template?

I assume you have tried using the tools menu, protection and unprotect the sheet option. It should allow you to do this Word 2003 does. Make your changes, then protect the sheet again so you can only select the unprotected cells.

I have a Gateway SX2370-UR13 with windows 8.0 installed, it has been nothing but problem after problem, from the first day I got it. I tried the "free" upgrade to windows 8.1 & that made things worse. I had to roll back to 8.0. Things have
gotten so bad that now the System restore, Refresh, & Reset options fail to function,(along with the Task manager, Control Panel, Advanced startup options & nearly everything else), giving me a message about needing to unlock the drive. This happens
with the USB recovery media , the repair disk(CD?DVD) , & the Automatic repair.

How do I fix this ?

I'm ready to go back to the beginning factory settings but cannot find a workable fix.  How do I even format the entire drive? So I can try the recovery media again for a "clean install?"

Hey guys my friends nec versa - Versa E2000 gives her "Warning: cannot unlock primary hdd" whenever she starts her computer. It has had an history of being nasty, and she has had to play with BIOS settings before in order to be able to boot in(such as the master password), but she says that this is a different problem as it is acting differently. I spent the last few hours searching around on the net trying to find a way to solve this.(she lives far away from me, so I can't get hands-on, otherwise I might have been more help).

This problem only occurs after bios has done it's thing, when it tries to boot into windows. She says that it just randomly started happening although her norton anti-virus was refusing to update before hand.

-Edit(wow quick, huh xD) http://support.necam.com/mobilesolu.../VersaUltraltDaylt/Docs/819-200887-000web.pdf is her BIOS if anybody is interested, also, when searching through the official site found her error code(she found it now me, iono where the official page even lies, google didn't pull it up when I searched it, xD) and has now moved onto: "operating system not found".

I am completely out of my league, and if you have an ideas or suggestions they would be warmly welcomed.

And try again

Howdy everybody!
When I hit the Windows & Print Screen keys, it is supposed to generate a picture of my Desktop into a Folder, within Pictures, labelled “Screenshots.”
But there is no such "ScreenShots" folder there!
What should I do? If I simply create a new folder, and label it “Screenshots,” will do that do the trick?  Or is there a more complicated fix?
Your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Made a HUGE mistake, messed with the settings under "My Computer" > "Manage" > "Services> and also the "Local Users". Now having trouble, can not see my "Start and Task Bar", the "windows"+ ''e" is no longer working.

How can I restore the Services & the Local Users account without having to reinstall my whole computer? I am afraid I will loose lots of files... I do not remember what exactly I changed, but some of the "Services" I changed to "disable" now when I try to open properties and change them back, I am unable. The right click to get to properties is not working.

Your help is highly appreciated.

A:How to restore the defaults for "services" under "My Computer" > "Manage>

I am not sure about the "quick" way of restoring, but what you can do is go back to services, "RIGHT-CLICK" the white area select "HELP" then the third option is "Default settings for services"

you can see what the default was and manually restore it. I have tried to copy and paste it below

A:No "ScreenShots" Folder in Pictures To Hold " Print Screen" Images!

Is it just saving the screenshots somewhere else or is it just not taking screenshots at all? Don't know about your specific system, but on my Win 10 lappy, the screen blinks (dims) when the screenshot is taken.
Did you look in all the subfolders in Pictures to see if Screenshots folder is buried in one of them?
Win 10 also has a Snipping Tool which will allow you to put a box around the part of the screen you want to capture and then you can save it wherever you want. Maybe that's easier, and you can pin the Snipping Tool to the Start menu so it's easy to find.
