Can't access my server from within the network

Q: Can't access my server from within the network

Here's my setup:
I've got a cable modem that's connected to the internet and to my router. Connected to my router I have a laptop (wifi) and two desktops - my server and my desktop. My router is set to forward all ports to my server.

When I ask other people to try and access my public IP or my domain name (http://zoklet.net/) from outside of my network, they are able to get there with no problem. When I try to access the server from within the network with its my external IP or domain name, the connection times out. I *can* access my server if I use the local IP (192.168...).

Obviously, I would like to be able to access my server from inside the network with my external IP or domain name. I know I can just edit /etc/hosts and add a line for my server, but I don't want to have to do that for each computer that connects to my network.

My router is a Netgear WGR614 v6 and my modem is a Motorola Surfboard.

Any help, please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I realize that there's probably a million different threads with a similar issue, but none of them have thus far been helpful. I'm running a personal media server/web server. It's completely accessible from inside my network. It is also accessible outside of my network, but within my university network. As in, I can access it, SSH into it, play movies from it, etc, as long as I am on campus somewhere.

The catch is, I can't access it if I am off campus. All of my ports are forwarded, what I believe to be, correctly. As long as my computer has an IP that is managed by campus, it works. Anything else does not. As always, our campus help desk is less than helpful. However, they claim to not be blocking any ports.

My setup is through a DD-WRT v34-sp2 mini, to an apache2 server, simply put. I'm out of ideas. When I do a port scan, like from Shields-Up! it says all ports are closed. However, they are open on my router, and should appear open to a scan, I would think.

I'm cautious to post this in networking because it may end up being a SQL/Access error in the end, but we don't have a solid lead on where this bottleneck is occuring.

For a project we're currently working on, we have a local access database that contains various tables for a PC inventory containing roughly 15,000 PCs and related apps/hardware/etc. The database sits at around 100 MB on disk all told, and interfaces with an MS-SQL server back end. The database is loaded out onto flash drives and given to various assessors and deployers for use. We have a version that draws directly from the SQL tables, but we also have a local version that updates local tables only so it can be used directly on the workstations being assessed without the ODBC connection to the server.

The issue comes with uploading the local data to the SQL server. When sitting in the data center where the SQL server is located, the upload of all of the local tables takes roughly 10 minutes. This is on a gigabit link, hovering around 2% (20-25 mb/s) utilization. When we take the database out to a remote site (hospital environment, large pipes), the upload time balloons out into the hour or two hour region.

The issue here is that the utlization hovers around .1% (or 1-2 mb/s) on a gigabit link out at the remote sites, when files can be transferred alongside the SQL upload from the data center without issue.

We've asked the network team to look into any sort of policies or subnet issues t... Read more

Hi everyone, ive got a server running windows server 2003, 1 windows 7 pro desktop attached to the router, several other desktops attatched to a switch which then goes into the server and 3 laptops connected via wifi to the router. All of the desktops on the network (the ones connected directly to the server and the one connected to the router) and one of the laptops have internet and are able to access the drives on the server. But the other 2 laptops (which were working fine yesterday) have internet access but when they are unable to access the file server and get a message saying the location is not available. The other laptop is working fine so i can only assume its an issue with the other 2 laptops. I hope you guys can help, I cant think of whats up!

A:Network Server access problem

Hello,

Do you have a domain configured? If so are the laptops on the Domain?

Check the amount of CALs installed on the Server. Can you give us an IPconfig of the Server and laptops? - Check that the DNS is set to the Server (if applicable).

Some of the folders on the shared drive on the server have suddenly become not accessible - although other folders within the same folder on the drive are accessible.

The only difference I can find is that the ones we can't open list no owner.

I can use the command prompt to get to the folders, when I ask for the directory of those folders I get "File Not Found."
One of these folders holds the data for all the projects for this year! Help!!

Strange problem, involving a DOS (command) prompt: We run a legacy clipper database on our 2003 web server, with no problems. I just added a new user, setting her up as an administor (using the wizard). If I log on as that user and open a command prompt, I can see the directory and file I want on the server... "dir xxx.dbf" shows the correct file. But, I cannot open that file! The clipper database can't open it, and I can't open it using dbase and a "use" command. If I log back on the same computer as another user, it all works just fine.

Any ideas as to why I can see a file, but can't open it??!!

A:can't access shared files on server from network computers

Hello bighaz,

Are you running a Domain Controller(DC) for your domain? If not, go to 1, if you are go to 2.

1)
If you are not running a domain controller then the user credentials will not be present on every machine thus the error. If all users access the same files then you could create a single generic account on the file server and the users will need to use these credentials to access it. If the users need restricted access to certain files and folders you would need to create multiple accounts on the file server.
Once done ensure that all machines are in the same 'workgroup' default name is WORKGROUP and you should then be able to have access.

2)
If you are running a DC you will need to ensure that all machines are members of the domain and that they know of the IP address of the DC(this will either be set by DHCP if you are running a DHCP server or if all machines have static IP's this will need to be set on each machine. You will then need to add the user accounts to the ACL for the file share they require access to. Remember you may need to add the user to both the share permissions and NTFS permissions.

If the above is still not working can you please confirm that you can ping the file server and also see if you can access file shares on any of the other PC's.

We've got a computer that's connected to the network and has internet access, but cannot access the network drive like the other computers can.

The shared drive is found under computer --> network location.
The operating system is Windows 7.

I've tried disconnecting from the network and reconnecting, and mapping the network drive. Honestly, this is way outside of my knowledge base, so anything that might help is appreciated.

Thank you!

Good afternoon all,

After trawling Google for solutions I'm not sure what to do.

Brand new comp running Windows 7 and using a wireless network adapter. The network signal is saying I'm connected and that there is internet access, but there is not. I've tried a different browser and nothing. Then an exclamation point pops up saying there is no internet access. I've troubleshooted using Windows and its getting the "DNS server is not responding" error. The internet was fine and then did a Windows update.

I've tried cmd release, flush, renew to no avail. I've changed the DNS address to 208-67-222-222. Uninstalled the wireless adapter, restarted and reinstalled. Unplugged the modem and router and then reconnected.

Sometimes internet access will be restored, but minutes later the DNS server pops up again.

I did a system restore to before the updates as a last ditch effort.

Thank you in advance!

Hello,

I have a synology diskmanager linux server that I access with my local computers on my home network. My dell optiplex 960 desktop runs windows xp pro, and I was experiencing a 10-15 second stall when I click on the diskstation in my network places, under workgroup. I went through with Dell and they suggested a repartitioning, reformatting and reinstallation of windows xp, which I've done. Unfortunately this did not change the response time. When I called back the support person (bear in mind this is their 'gold' service contract) said it was outside of the scope of services...

So I was hoping that someone could help. Another problem was one of my shared folders on the diskstation could not be viewed from the xp computer. So I created a new folder and copied over these files and it's fine now.

I run Malware (full version), MS Security essentials and firewall.

Thanks,

James

Hey,

All of our computers at work have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and are connected through Server 2008. One computer, which I recently imaged and deployed, is having an issue connecting to network folders. The strange thing is that all networked drives are set for access through group policy. The computer in question is able to access allowed folders but, when I go to the main computer screen, instead of seeing Network on the left hand sidebar, I see Computers and Devices. Also, the machine will not allow anyone, even administrators, to map a network drive. The user also cannot access files from links in emails - i.e. drive:\folder\file. I'm wondering if there is some glitch in the policy or should I just re-image the machine. My boss wants to avoid the re-imaging but, even going through Network Troubleshooting, we can't seem to locate the problem.

A friend is moving his business, and the new business park that he's setting up shop in does not have anyway to get any wired internet to his building, excluding a T1 line, which he can't justify the cost of.

One windows 7 machine acts as the server, primarily for Quickbooks database, and there are two other windows 7 machines that are clients, reading off said database.

He's getting one of those usb dongles for wireless internet service, for the server only (the other two computers will be tethered to a smartphone for internet for QB and windows updates periodically).

They do NOT want to share the servers wireless connection to the other machines.

My only concern was if the server will continue to try to check the LAN for internet connectivity, or will it check both network connections when one fails, or is there a setting I can tell them to change to ensure it knows to go to the wireless dongle for internet all the time, without interfering with the workstations talking to the server over the LAN to get to the database?

The setup at the old office was business class DSL, they are using a relatively new Linksys router, which had the DSL authentication information.

Thank you!

Hello,

I know this is a long shot. I'm staying in what's basically a hotel for the next couple months. I was on their free wireless networks up until a couple of days ago, when it just cut off my internet access all of a sudden.

They have confirmed it's nothing on their end. My roommates have had steady access on their computers no problem, my iPhone as well.

I obviously have no access to their modem, to make issues more difficult, when I right-click any of the network connections, a dialog box will appear, but all the menu options are blank. I can't do anything to the connections except rename them. Anything else yields a message box with no message.

if there's any other way to access the TCP/IP properties that would be great. Right-clicking the connection and clicking properties is the only way I know of.

Hi there
Why does Windows Networking always seem to hose things up ( Linux works EVERY time)

I have two computers on the SAME test private LAN one Whitehorse (W2003 server) and the other Blackdog (W8 Enterprise) both enabled "Shareable and Visible".

View from W2003 -- can see and access disks C,D, and F on W8 Computer

View from W8 - Networking shows the computer Whitehorse (W2003 server) but can't access any disks etc (or even its printer). PING even fails but W8 obviously knows it's on the Network because its found it. The stupid Windows diagnostics when you click Diagnose doesn't help at all --in fact I've NEVER found the network diagnostic panel of the slightest bit of help ever.

I've switched off firewalls etc while testing so there's no security rubbish to take care of while I'm trying to get this to work. LAN is purely LOCAL -- no computer is on "the other side" of a router.

Both machines can access independently the Internet through a Local router and connections are via LAN cable so nothing should be simpler. !! But can I get this to work !!.

I had a similar problem with W7 but it seemed to "Disappear" without me actually doing anything -- the proverbial "Ghost in the Machine" I expect.

Assuming this Windows 8 Enterprise machine isn't locked down with Group Policy.

This type of problem usually requires that you change the lanman server parameters in order to get Windows 8 working with older servers. Do these adjustments on the Windows 8 machines that needs to connect to the server.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

There are two separate settings for disabling the 128 bit encryption.

Hi Mohamed and Welcome to SF,

Pls. check your Server's Event Viewers error logs, especially DNS errors.

What type of Security or AV Software do you have installed in your Server?

Will it be possible for you to post an ipconfig /all output of one Win7 machine and the Server?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1750 with Windows Home Premium x64. This problem began occurring on Thursday after my brother put his hard drive from his laptop which runs Vista, into my laptop. I figured it was a stupid idea, but he stayed home and I went to school that day. (His CMOS battery needs to be replaced)

So whenever I try to connect wirelessly to my home network, my laptop considers it a public network and I have limited connectivity, which is pretty much no connectivity. Although when I connect the ethernet cord directly to my laptop, everything works fine. Not sure if that helped so let me know if you all need anything else. Here is my ipconfig/all, which is quite long.

Just so you know, I've already tried adding things to the {GUID} codes or whatever.

Any help is appreciated.

I have a brand new acer aspire notebook and I'm trying to connect to my airport extreme card built into my iMac desktop. The laptop sees the signal just fine, but it will not connect to the internet and I get "limited access". What can I do to connect?

A:unidentified network, no network access, limited access

Hi and welcome to SF,

This is an interesting issue, from the surface of things, it looks like there is a restriction on the connection to access the internet from the built-in card. You were able to tap into the wireless card network so that narrows it down to possibly hardware, MAC address, IP restriction.

Can you do an ipconfig from the notebook and show us?

My husband and I have several email addresses for our business that were created and hosted by another party using cPanel. Unfortunately we are late in paying our bill and our emails addresses have been shut down. Is there any way to redirect them? Any other advice? We did have access to the cPanel account but looks that was access was changed too. (see attached) If I am able to obtain access again, can I transfer the email addresses somehow?

A:Can I Access Emails If My Server Access Has Been Shut Down?

what was the last part after the @ of the email
why not just pay the bill ?
if ita a domain youu own , then you can transfer to a new provider and they can also host your email - but there will be a hosting / email server charge for you on another host.

Assuming this is all via a domain name, what is your domain name ?
when does the domain name expire?

Who are you hosting with now - is it very expensive?
What country are you in

You will NOT be able to transfer the email address and all the OLD emails , just the email address may be transfered - the emails will stay on the current hosting server , and if you leave it to long , which you may have already done, they will delete all the emails anyway

Hello there,

I'm struggling with networking problems.
I have server 2003 that acts as print server, file server and VPN server.

But after some configuring for the VPN adapter (separate adapter) I can't connect to \\server (that's server real name) anymore.
BUT I can connect with it over IP (192.168.1.200, static IP)

So I thought that the VPN adapter is conflicting with some settings and disabled it, and it didn't help.

Server is behind router and I have static IP. Router seems to be configured correctly.
I can ping the server.

What's the problem?

edir:
May it be netBIOS problem?

Hello,

I have a problem to access file server on Windows Server 2000 from a Windows 7 PC. For your information, due to some reasons, both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are in different domain.

I have tried all suggested solutions which are :
i. to unchecked both attributes in 'Network Security : Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC)' for both clients and server.
ii. to apply 'Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' in 'Network Security : LAN Manager authentication level'
iii. to make sure the time setting for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are the same.

But still, i couldn't access the file server. In fact, each time I entered domain\username to authenticate, it will give out this message :

Since I am kinda new to this troubleshooting things, it would be great if someone can tell me why does this happening. Is it because of the different domain?

thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 unable to Access file server on Windows Server 2000

To connect to the server you would need to enter the credentials of the domain user on the server that would have access. For example if the domain was 'home' with a user 'Josh' then I would put:

home\Josh

As the username. If you want to get advanced you could try and form a trust with the other domain in active directory so that the other domain has permission to access the server

Josh

Hi, we have a bunch of computers(70 aprox) connected to a domain. Since couple weeks ago very strange issues started occuring, internet and network access(path to network share is lost) would come up at random times and on different machines and would last for about 10-20 seconds it would re-connect again.
All the computers are using private addresses.

Most machines are windows 7, some are xp.

Using Windows server 2003 as dc.

Since the occurance is so random it's very hard to pin point the cause, hopefully someone has come accross this issue in the past.

Initially the network icon and sharing center were correctly indicating network connection status.  After the third windows update session in 4 days it now is constantly stating that I do not have network or internet access.  This is not the case as IE and Firefox, Outlook 07 and Thunderbird all can get online without issues.  Also network commands (ping, tracert, ipconfig) work from the command line and show positive connections and even IP addresses. If anyone has suggestions on what is wrong or better yet can help me solve this please say so.CB

A:Network and Sharing Center falsely reports no network or internet access

No I do not have two network cards - only the on board LAN connector.  This network device works fine without issues in Device Manager (no bangs or red stop icons) and shows that the correct 'signed' driver is present.Right now I have re-installed the card from device manager (right click on network card listed, choose uninstall) then re-scan for new hardware and it is up and running again.  Same driver (latest) installed and the Network Places icon is showing correct information as well as the sharing center.  As soon as the computer enters standby, sleep or hibernate or I have to restart (warm or cold boot) this will change back to 'No Internet Access' in both the icon on the taskbar and in network sharing center.Again this appears to be an issue with Rhine PHY and Windows 7.
Hi CBThis may be associated with a known bug in Windows 7 with the Sleep/Hibernate components.
The bug appears when a hardware/software component fails to re-initialize when the system resumes from Sleep or Hibernation or will not enter the suspend state.
These bugs have only been seen on specific systems that have combinations of certain hardware/software installed. The only way we have to deal with these issues in the RC build is to try and avoid using the Sleep/Hibernate functions as much as possible. If you experience this bug and still need to use the Sleep or Hibernate functions be aware that you could possibly lose any unsaved information in applications. The latest information we have is ... Firstly the computer - Windows XP Pro, all windows updates installed.

Pensions Profiler - Installed on their server but installed on each pc. Everyone's pc is fine except one. They have a mapped network drive linking them to the pensions profiler section of the server.

When installing, it does not get very far before displaying the following error.

Pensions Profiler Installer Information
Error 1606. Could not access network location CMNet\Network Path\.

I have checked the Microsoft site but nothing comes back into relation with "CMNet\Network Path\." part of the error.

Look forward to reading some replies.
All registry has been checked in relation to similar problems on the Microsoft support website and all registry entries appear to be fine. Error message attached as a pdf.

Connected to the Linksys routers LAN I have 1 PC and 1 network storage device. I would like to map a network drive from a PC on the 'Home' LAN to the storage device on the Linksys router LAN.
The PC on the Linksys LAN is mapped just fine to the storage device because it's on the same LAN, I cant seem to connect anything from my 'Home' LAN to my Linksys LAN. Is it possible to do this type of mapping?
Both PCs use Windows 7.

A:How can I Access a Child Network From a Parent Network in Win7 64bit

Why did you add a second "router" (i.e. the E2500)? You describe only a PC and NAS connected to it, which I assume are both wired-connected to the E2500. Doesn't sound like you need any of the wireless capabilities of the E2500.

What you really should have done is get a "switch", not a router, to satisfy your needs to connect that PC and NAS. A switch has none of the firewall and security features that a router has. It's simply a "port-multiplier" which has one upstream connection port (say to a wired port on your primary Comcast gateway, i.e. modem + router combined), same as your E2500 is currently connected through its WAN port to your Comast router. The switch also has an additional number of downstream ports, to allow devices in its physical vicinity to be wired-connected, same as your router did. So to the downstream wired devices currently connected to your E2500 the "switch" device looks identical, and provides the identical access to the Internet.

But the switch will provide unblocked access to all other devices on the primary LAN hosted by itself as well as by the Comcast router. And it will also provide unblocked access to all downstream devices, to any upstream device (like your first computer). Everything connected through the switch appears identical to how it would look if connected directly to the primary router, and access between ALL devices is now possible and unrestricted by firewalls and security (since the...
