Unable to Configure Windows Firewall

Q: Unable to Configure Windows Firewall

I am unable to configure Windows Firewall and Security Center settings on a Windows XP SP2 operating systems. Windows Firewall is disabled. I cannot use the Windows Firewall tool in Control Panel to turn on Windows Firewall or to configure Windows Firewall settings on the Windows XP SP2 computer. When I try to configure Windows Firewall settings, some options are appear dimmed, and I receive the following message: "For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy."

In addition, my Internet Explorer default settings are not available.
Recently I removed trojan.cachecachekit and had made the assumption this problem was caused by the trojan. System Restore is not an option because in following the Symantec instructions to remove the trojan I reset the restore date. Can you please help me get my system back to its original configuration?

Thanks! Nica

Preferred Solution: Unable to Configure Windows Firewall

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Unable to Configure Windows Firewall

You may not have removed the trojan.cachecachekit completely. IMO I would follow the instructions here http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=15968. Also read this http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=59099.

So firstly, I'm using Windows. My computer got infected by Win 7 Security 2012 rogue virus. I removed the virus with the instruction on bleepingcomputer. I think I removed the virus, but I cannot go onto the firewall. When I go to windows firewall, everything is disabled and thus not able to enable the firewall. So when I click 'Use recommended settings' it says that Windows firewall can't change some of your settings, Errorcode 0x80070424.

The error code you've listed relates to Windows Update. Are you having any issue's with WU?

Hi

I have difficulties to configure Windows 7 Firewall as I want it to work.
So I tried several other firewalls but those seems not to be good or easy enough to configure more advanced with.
So maybe Windows 7 Firewall is the way to go?

I have 2 network cards on Windows 7 Desktop.

Internet and one Internal Net. Internet is shared with the Internal network.

I want to open these TCP/UDP ports for all network computers for example:
21 25 43 53 80 81 113 123 137:139 161 411:413 443 455 45 993

ALL other ports shall be blocked.

For IP 192.168.2.6 all ports shall be open.

How do I configure the Windows 7 Firewall for this configuration?
Or can you recommend any other firewall software? I have tried Comodo and PC Tools Firewall Plus and some more I can't remember.

//Kensy

A:Configure Windows 7 Firewall or get other program?

I'm curious why you want to open all those ports, are you intending to run a web/mail/ftp server?

I have a windows service, running with Local System account, which downloads files using windows BITS service (my windows service references Microsoft.Msdn.Samples.BITS.dll to manage windows BITS jobs).
Everything works fine having the below windows firewall outbound rule:
Protocol=TCP, Local port=Any, Remote port=80, Program="C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe" Service="BITS" Action=allow
Windows Firewall is configured to block all outbound/inbound connections and allow the configured rules only. OS Win 7.

If I change my windows service user to Local Service / Network Service account it does not work anymore, unless I remove Service="BITS" from the firewall rule:
Protocol=TCP, Local port=Any, Remote port=80, Program="C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe" Action=allow
Do you know how to properly configure windows firewall outbound rule in this case?

Thank you!

Hello all.

My Dell Inspiron 3520 was going quite slow for unknown reasons so I decided to 'refresh' it using Windows advanced start-up setting. Since that time I have been unable to install Windows updates. Well, I can 'install' them, but they won't 'configure'. Once installed and 'configured' 100% I get this error message advising following reboot : "Failure to configure updates. Reverting changes". The laptop then stays paralysed on that screen.

This only started to happen AFTER I "refreshed" my laptop, which was running Windows 8.1 pretty-much problem-free, though a bit slowly, until a week ago. For now I have found a temporary 'fix' by disabling automatic updates; otherwise the laptop is constantly stuck on the "failure to configure updates" error page (because, obviously, it's automatically attempting to install updates). I have done all the standard troubleshooting, including running MS Fix It, Dell Dr ('My Dell' found no hardware issues), MS Malware removal and Mcafee anti-malware. All reported "no issues". I have been in command prompt and found no issues I even tried to 'refresh' the laptop again two more times. I have also spoken to two Windows "technicians" and allowed one of them to remotely access my laptop. He found no issues or "violations".

Obviously, the temporary 'fix' of turning off auto-updates isn't a long term solution, and 'refreshing' the laptop hasn't helped (it actual... Read more

Hello everyone,

I'm about at my wit's end trying to figure out my problem and finally decided I should ask the pros for help, since an exhaustive search of the interwebs has turned up nothing. I'm a hobby PC user so please be patient with me. So here is my problem.

I recently bought all the stuff to build an HTPC/gaming rig for my girlfriend and I and I wanted to set up RAID 1 but no matter what I try, I can't get it to work. Here is my rig.

ASRock H77 Pro4-M mobo
Intel i7-2600
(2) 2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm; 6.0GB/s HDD
(4) 2GB G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR 1600 RAM
EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti Video Card
Cooler Master 600W Silent Power supply

I think that's about it.

Here is what I've done.

I went into bios and set my storage configuration to RAID. After, I saved and exited, and allowed the machine to reboot. When it did, I pushed Ctrl + I to enter the RAID volume setup menu. I labeled the volume, chose RAID 1, selected my drives, selected my size, and saved and exited. Then I booted from my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (Dell OEM, if that matters). I selected my regional settings, and when prompted, accepted the terms and selected "Custom" install. At the drive select screen, I saw one disk, which I believe is what I should see. I highlighted the drive and selected "Load Drivers." I used the driver labeled with the arrow in the attatched image. I got it from my mobo's website found here ASRock > Products > H77 Pro4-M. After the driver loaded, I re... Read more

A:Unable to configure RAID on Windows 7 Home Premium

Why do you want RAID? WIn7 doesn't much like RAID which isn't even Redundant so risks losing both HD's if one fails. Better to install to one HD and use the other for backing up an image.

If you saw one correctly-sized RAID array when you booted into the installer to try hardware RAID then the driver wasn't needed as it's only loaded when no drive shows up. Try again.

Well I got a big problem.

A couple days ago I noticed network connectivity issues. Random connection drops, overall bad connection, etc. I recently had some really bad malware and I removed it, so I suspected leftover malware from the start. I went to check Windows Update to see if I missed a security update, and it wasn't even on my computer. Something removed the service completely off my computer, so I found a .reg to fix it. I then started Windows Update and found that I had 30 updates missing and updated all of them successfully.

I then decided to see what was going on with my Windows Firewall, only to find that it was also removed. Wasn't in my services or anything. So I downloaded the .reg to fix that, tried to activate the service, only to run into another roadblock that I still haven't been able to fix, an error stating

"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs".

Ok. So I checked my services again and I believe that some more were completely missing(Base Filtering Engine, NSI proxy Service). So to try and remedy this, I attempted an sfc /scannow in elevated cmd prompt.

Then another brick wall. I get to 59% and then I get this message

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Trustedinstaller service is turned on, so I have no idea why I'm getting this message. But... Read more

Your firewall traffic is controlled by whichever modem/router you are using. So you must access that in order to access the firewall settings and then edit the permissions for each port. If you need help accessing the modem/router, refer to the physical box and it should be on there.

Hey there i would like to know whether it is possible to configure the "inside interface" of cisco router with /24 subnet, which is connected to a layer 3 switch which has few network segment using /23 subnet...would it cause routing conflict?

hmm; *IF* there's one connection from the Cisco to the switch which then provides the fan-out into the x.100.0/24, then the rules would be generic filters; high level, non-destination ip specific (no layer 2,3 rules)

there should not be problems with that approach.

Think of the Cisco as a gateway filter and then the L3 Switch as the low level controller.

Or, can I do it with the one I have?

I am currently using Norton Personal Firewall. If I can configure my ports I am not sure how. I am testing a program called VNC, http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/, and need to open port 5800 so I can access my machine and network remotely. When a system attempts to connect remotely Norton throws up an alert. I can check to always allow the system to connect and I have no problem from that computer from then on. But, if I try to connect from a different computer Norton won't allow the connection because the IP address has not been approved for remote connection.

The way the software works is I am able to enter my IP address along with ":[port number]" into Internet Explorers address bar and I am able to enter my password into a Java applet. I then have full control of my home system.

I am testing the vnc software on Win 2000 pro and Win XP pro.

So, what I need is a software firewall solution that will allow me to open/close specific ports.

Thanks for any help.

A:Is there a software firewall that will allow me to configure my ports manually?

So, you are able to access it OK from your home system w/Norton, but not a remote IP addy?

If yis is the case, your host may have set it up for your home address only, I know someone else
in that situation.

Let me know if I got it right this time?

Hi,

Let's say I need to use Internet very often for sensitive transactions (like Internet banking, online purchase which requires entering credit card number etc) on a PUBLIC NETWORK (unavoidable) which everyone can access.

Q1. HOW would performing transactions over unsecured network make my computer less secure?

Q2. Can people on the same unsecured public network (no encryption) easily gain access to my computer and steal my info etc?

I would not allow any chances of my personal info being stolen so

Q3. What is the TIGHTEST settings I can make on my firewall when I am connected to a unsecured public network with no encryption? (e.g. put it to stealth mode, deny all incoming traffic, defining my IP to be the only trusted network etc)

I am also using Orbit Downloader and understand it uses P2P connection to accelerate download.

Q4. Does P2P makes my computer less secure and more vulnerable? Is Orbit Downloader totally clean? Can I use P2P service and block all incoming traffic at the same time?

I am no expert in configuring firewall and hope I could get help here to make my system more secure. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

A:How + What To Configure Firewall To Make My System More Secure

Always make sure you are connected to a secure network (look for lock icon in address bar) before entering any sensitive information, (credit card, bank, social security, etc.) and even then, make sure it is a known and trusted site.

I would use the default settings for your firewall. Setting them too high can cause problems.

I personally would avoid P2P sites, they are a well known path for malware infections.

Orbit Downloader seems to be ok, don't know much about it, though.

It is not uncommon for remnants of malware to corrupt files. Can you tell us what the malware was and how you removed it. Also do you have a system repair disk or OEM cd/dvd?

Hi, I am having a problem turning my Windows Firewall on. When I try through the Security Center it gives the error message 'Security Center can't turn on Windows Firewall'. If click the link to turn it on manually I get 'Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service'. I'm not sure what the virus/malware is called that causes this. I have done a couple of scans using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and after removing a couple of suspect items it seems to be clear. Just leaves the Firewall issue.
I am using Windows Vista 32 bit, and below is my FRST log, wasn't sure exactly what log would help.

So for the past two days I've had a weird problem with my laptop after it ran out of power.  It didn't want to connect online but that was fixed with command prompts and now the firewall is turned off. I've done a malwarebytes scan in safe mode with nothing found, tried doing some troubleshooting in the services and so on and so forth.

Basically when I try to turn on the firewall it says that it needs to be done manually and then when you try to turn it on manually it comes up with error code 0x8007042c.  I've tried turning on the service but I get "Error 1608: The dependency service or group failed to start."

Have you tried all steps listed at http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2530126 ?
Did you have any threat infection or removal around the time all these problems started?
Can you briefly describe what was the problem with network connections?

I am using windows 7 ? 64 bit ultimate. My firewall has not been running for a long while. I am using Kaspersky internet security 2016. I tried uninstalling it. But still my firewall doesn?t run.

I went to services.msc using the Run command and tried to start my firewall but I got this error.

"windows could not start the windows firewall"

When I go to windows firewall and press the button of recommended settings, the waiting blue circle spins for some seconds but after that nothing happens.

What should I do so that my firewall is able to run successfully?

I have installed all updates of my windows 7.

A:Unable to start windows firewall

Hello:

If you are using KIS or KTS (not KAV), then there is already a firewall as part of Kaspersky.

KIS and KTS would have automatically disabled the native Windows firewall.
And, if they had not (as occasionally happens), it would be very important to do so manually from the Windows Control Panel.
That's because it's very bad to have 2 active firewalls running on the system.

So, unless you are going to uninstall KIS or KTS, I would NOT try to enable the Windows firewall.
Enabling it will only cause system performance and stability problems if the KIS/KTS firewall is already running.

Cheers,
MM

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional x64. I installed all the usual programs (Microsoft Security Essentials, Firefox, etc).

In under a day, I was infected with a virus (the Win 7 Antivirus 2012). I believe it was a false "Update Adobe Flash Player" window that did it.

I removed it with the help of this guide, however I believe that more damage has been done, as I am unable to start the Windows Firewall (it was on before the infection).

When I try to start it via the Control Panel, it says

Quote:
Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.
Error code 0x80070424

I used Google to find more information about this error, and the suggestions did not work. The most common set of instructions were these.

I downloaded many Malware scanners (ones provided by Microsoft, and some from third-party locations), and all of them came up negative.

I was then told to start the services manually. This involved starting the Service manager, scroll to Windows Firewall, and restart it. However, in my Service window, I didn't have a Windows Firewall service, a Base Filtering Engine service, or a Firewall Client Agent service. This didn't change anything, as I was still unable to start the Firewall.

Then, I tried starting the dependent services manually. That is, to go into the command prompt, and enter the following commands

Code:
sc config MpsSvc start= auto
sc config KeyIso start= auto
sc config BFE start= auto
sc config FwcAgen... Read more

Hi there,

for the past couple weeks I have been unable to turn on the Windows Firewall in Windows 8 RTM. When trying to enable it from the control panel by clicking "Use recommended settings" it loads for a few seconds then nothing happens. Same thing happens when I try to start the service from the task manager, loads for a bit then nothing happens. In the System Log in the Event Viewer, I see this error: "The Windows Firewall service terminated with the following service-specific error: Access is denied."

I've tried ComboFix, but that isn't compatible with Windows 8. I ran GMER, but it's only allowing me to scan Services, Registry and Files for some reason, all the other options are greyed out so I can't scan the processes, system, threads, etc.

I can't seem to find any Windows 8 specific fixes, which only makes sense since it's not out yet, but my guess is that it's not all that different from Windows 7.

Does anybody have any idea how I can fix this?

I am trying to set up a minecraft server on my PC. It is connected wirelessly to a broadband router, and I have set up port-forwarding on the router.

I am testing using Shields Up to scan the relevant port, 25565, while the server is running, and if I turn off the PC firewall, it successfully finds it, so I know this is an issure with the firewall.

Turn on the firewall, and set up two inbound rules, one for TCP, one for UDP, as I am not sure what minecraft uses. Each rule is enabled, set to allow the connection, local port is 25565, nothing else set. But Shields Up cannot find the server.

Any ideas anyone?

Did you replicate the same rules for Outbound connections as well? To fully allow a connection you may need to do it bidirectionally.

Hope This Helps,

Gooday all. I have a laptop set up for my entertainment area. I am using an HDMI cord from laptop to a screen and using the sound output to a set of surround sound speakers. This a pretty cheap set up,nothing fancy. I am trying to get all the speakers recognized by my Realtek Sound Management application. The Lasptop (http://speccy.piriform.com/results/J...8QITBgvOYgX6Ol) is only recognizing a 2 speaker stereo set up. How am I able to change this so as to be able to adjust settings to the 6 speakers of the system. Thanks in advance.

A:Unable to configure speakers on Laptop.

Looking at the Speccy, I don't see anything other than RealTek HD Audio. If the laptop has a RealTek HD Audio Manager, have you tried setting the speaker type there?

Aside from the audio issue, I notice you only have 2GB of RAM. The 64 bit OS does you no good with only 2GB of RAM, and can be an issue with only the 2GB which is bare minimum for a 64 bit OS. The main reason for using a 64 bit OS is to use more than 4GB of RAM, since a 32 bit OS cannot address 4 GB (or more) of RAM.
