Solved: ethernet card shows broadcast address as physical address

Q: Solved: ethernet card shows broadcast address as physical address

I am running xp pro. I can not get an internet connection through my ethernet card. When I hook up my modem through usb it works fine but unable to utilize my full download speed capabilities. Hooked the modem up via ethernet to laptop and it worked just fine. The only thing I can find wrong that I don't know how to fix or what is causing it is the fact that the physical address of the card comes up as the broadcast address (FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF). Very strange. Can someone please suggest a fix for this (and dont say update the drivers) although it could likely be something as simple that I have overlooked.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I bought a laptop last Saturday (30-8-16). I study in a university where you have to give your laptop's MAC address/Physical address to access the university WI-Fi. So i took my laptop to the wi-fi configuration department, they registered my MAC address and sent me back. But the wi-fi did'nt work, so i went back and he tried checking my MAC address and the MAC address had changed. So, he asked me to restart my laptop and when i did, i got a new MAC address again (third one). He said MAC address is supposed to be unique, please go get it checked. So basically each time i shut it down and start or restart my laptop, i get a new MAC address. I called the customer care on Tuesday and your executive couldn't understand the problem and he just disconnected the call. I had to call again and wait for so long, even this guy didn't know the solution to this. He said he'll ask his senior officials and get back to me the next day but i've not got a single call till now. I called again and asked another guy, he asked me to open command prompt and type "getmac" and my laptop displayed 3 MAC addresses that time whereas a laptop should have only 2! I have received a damaged product probably and i'm not getting proper service due to which i had to post here. It's been 4 days and not a single solution. Please solve ASAP.

Hey everyone.

I've ran into a problem that I can't quite figure out. My internet connection shows 'no internet access' even though my ISP shows the connection is coming into the house just fine. I usually use a router (NetGear-WNR3500U) but I right now I have the Ethernet connection plugged directly into my PC. I tried directly plugging into my laptop and the internet works just fine. So I know the problem resides in the PC.

Some troubleshooting things I have tried.
-Power cycled my modem, router and PC.
-Repinged my connection from my ISP(Comcast Xfinity)
-Used the reset option on the router and the modem
-I was walked through the internet options needed with the tech support from my ISP to make sure DHCP was enabled and every other setting was correct, and he cleared me that all settings were correct.
-Tried ipconfig commands to /renew and /release my IP
When I tried ipconfig /renew I get the error 'An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server'

-Restored my PC to a restore point where the Internet was working

All of these options did not work.

What I think the problem is and I am not sure how to fix it, when I run the ipconfig /all command my Auto configuration IPv4 Address shows 169.254.112.76 which I was told is a router IP address even though I am plugged directly from the modem to my PC with an Ethernet cord. So I think that's my problem? But I am not sure.

I'd be glad to prov... Read more

A:'No Internet Access' IP address shows router not the modem IP address

That would be your ISPs' address, the router would probably be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 so, in the properties, advanced button for the ipv4 of your adapter, make sure both settings are on auto, and add the correct router address in the gateway box.

I have 2 computers connected to a router connected to DSL modem. Both computers have Kerio Personal Firewall. The logs keep showing that address 192.168.1.255 sends out UDP through port 138. I read somewhere that this is a broadcast address. What is that?

Is it ok to block it? Will it affect file transfers between my 2 coms or the internet connection or something else?

A:Is it ok to block broadcast address?

It's a NETBIOS port for mapping a drive on the network. If you block it, it will probably affect drive mapping between the two computers. If you put your local LAN in the trusted zone for the firewall, this problem should not exist.

so i'm traveling with a guy i work with. we're staying at this hotel that offers a free dsl connection. he had his computer hooked up the first night and it worked fine. then he unplugged it, used it during the day, and when he plugged it back in, it wouldn't connect to the internet.
i checked the network connections and it said it was connected and sending packets, but not receiving. i did an ipconfig (because he's running winXP) and it came up with the same subnet mask, gateway, dns, etc as my laptop. the only thing that was different was his ip said 10.10.x.255
i have a limited amount of knowledge and understanding of ip addresses, but i thought that when an ip address ended with .255 that it was broadcasting to the rest of the network. am i wrong? the only experience i have is with class c networks.
i tried restarting his computer, restarting the modem, and finally called the tech support for the service. they showed up and said the connection and hardware were fine, and it must be his computer.
i also manually entered an ip address, subnet mask, gateway, and dns servers, but that didn't help either. i also did an ipconfig /release and /renew but to no avail. repairing the connection obviously didn't work either.

i'd appreciate any help.

TIA

Just a general query from a bit of noob, probably a silly question.
In Windows XP Home SP 3 (32 Bit), does the page file use up any of the Physical Address Space? I know that RAM and Video cards do, but I was wondering if the Page file did too?

Thanks.

A:Solved: Does the Page File use up the Physical Address Space?

Hey,

It resides on your hard drive also known as 'virtual memory'.. and is roughly 1.5 times your installed RAM.
So it's used in addition too.. rather than taking away from physical RAM installed

I have a Dell desktop running windows xp. I have cable broadband and cable telephone. I tried hooking my computer
to the phone modem with the ethernet connection to see if it would work. When I hooked back up to my cable modem,
it couldn't get an IP address. I tried the REPAIR button a hundred times to no avail, I tried CMD IPCONFIG/ RELEASE and RENEW
to no avail, I tried setting (TCP/IP) properties to: obtain IP address and DNS server automatically, still limited or no connectivity.
I tried rebooting computer and modem several times, disconnecting cable, tried different ethernet cables, turned off firewall, installed new network interface card, same results. I am, however, able to use a USB connection from modem, and it works fine. But I would prefer to
use an ethernet connection. Is there something I'm overlooking? Did hooking up a different modem change settings on my computer? If you can figure this out, you're a genius, cause tech support can't.

I just wanted to post the following info, since I had a really hard time finding the answer to this myself.

We just had a relatively new Apple iMac spontaneously change its MAC/Ethernet address this past weekend. Turns out this is a known issue and I was able to find the solution right here on this site:

http://forums.techguy.org/networking/272551-mac-address-changed-spontaneously.html

I wanted to bring it up again since that is an old forum post and I faced a lot of skepticism from networking and security folks at our company that this could even happen.

Anyway, as the thread above indicates, just shut the computer down, unplug power and ethernet, wait a minute, and then boot it back up again and you should be right as rain.

So bizarre.

When today I received an e-mail the sending address is listed as Microsoft/MSN Lottery instead of [email protected]*67*.net
If I reply the reply to that address it becomes Microsoft/MSN Lottery<[email protected]> I have a second throw a way e-mail address on the same ISP. Her e-mail to me at that address also came with the MSN as the sender. I e-mailed that address but got no reply
I went to my ISP's server and the MSN e-mail address shows up on the server.I have received many e-mails from other people and the addresess are all correct. It is only from her that the MSN... shows up. She uses a MAC with no mail client ( direct from Yahoo ) I am running Win 7 and my mail client is Thunderbird. Her e-mails to other people are normal.

Otherwise everything seems normal.

I wouldn't bet on which sub-forum this topic belongs to, but here goes...

I'm trying to install Maya (6.5), but it requires a HOSTID (Ethernet Address/Mac), which LMTools (comes with Maya) reports as 000000000000. As you can guess, Maya doesn't accept that as a valid one. So I tried getting it with "ipconfig /all" command, but the Physical Address I get there still doesn't satisfy Maya.
The PC isn't on a network, and I connect to the internet with dial-up (yes, yes, I still haven't crawled out of the Stone Age...). The firewall, in case it might have something to do with the problem, is Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro 2.5 (turned off when not connected to internet, so it being turned on doesn't seem to be the problem).
OS is WinXP SP2 (in-built firewall is, obviously, turned off).

So... Any ideas?

A:Solved: Yahoo email unable to insert address from address book

Concerning my post above: I turned on my older XP computer and I had no problem with inserting an address from the Yahoo! address book.

I compared all my settings in both computers and noticed that I had different settings relating to how pop-ups are handled. XP reminded me that the address book takes the form of a pop-up. On my Vista I had pop-ups opening up (?) in a webpage. That is the page which came up blank. After I have corrected the settings, I no longer have a problem.

In the past I've maintained my address book using the built-in Address Book utility that came with Windows. Once each year, I would import my Address Book (.WAB) file into Outlook 2003/XP. (I don't use Outlook for email.) Then I would use the Mail Merge feature in Word 2003/XP to make and print address labels on standard Avery label sheets to simplify address of my Christmas cards.

Since I'm now using Windows 7, and the familiar Address Book utility is no longer available, how can I print my address labels? I have both Windows Address Book (.WAB) and Comma-Separated Values (.CSV) files that contain my address book data. So, I guess I need to know two things:
Which program or utility (preferably free) can I use to print my address labels.
How do I import my address data into that program?

If it helps, I am already a user of Gmail and Google Drive. Thanks.

Hi Jim,
Assuming you still have Microsoft Office (any version) you can use the Word mail merge feature and use your .csv file as your data source - no other programs necessary. What version of Office are you using?

Ok so I built a computer out of old computer parts from when I upgraded my computer. I put these parts into another computer that I gave to my friend. I'ts running windows 7 and I've downloaded 1.8 gb of updates to the machine using my service provider Cableone. I took said machine over to my friends house hooked it up no internet...

Their ISP is centurylink and after 5+ hours of trying to troubleshoot the computer I took it back to my place hooked it back up and internet. So i'm really quite confused.

I've tried using a known working cable at their house. The network adapter still shows yellow and red link lights. I've tried setting the adapter to obtain ip address automaticly, I've even tried setting a static ip address which is not in use(I got access to their router). Link lights still yellow and red.

When the computer is connected to my network/isp the link lights are still yellow and red but I can still get internet.

Hi, glad to find this site as my desktop PC is having lots of trouble with an XP Pro install on a HDD.

My HDD (60gb Maxtor IDE)was having major bootup issues and I suspect a mechanical failure so it was removed and replaced with an older spare HDD that I had for a while (Fujitsu 4.3gb – yes, very old but was working well).

Then XP Pro was loaded onto the replacement 4.3gb hdd; this produced 4 problems

Issue # 1:

There is no internet connection. At first, there was no LAN icon in Control Panel à Network Connections. This was resolved through enabling the onboard LAN via CMOS/BIOS.

Then, after the LAN icon appeared in Network Connection, there was nothing in the details.

So, I did the following: netsh int ip reset reset.log

This gave what I believe is the default MS IP address of 169.254.0.0.

The LAN icon was not getting any IP address outside of this default, no matter how much I rebooted or powered off the router.

I have a Vonage router which feeds the Desktop PC, so I called Vonage tech support and they told me to manually input the IP of 192.168.15.4 and a default gateway of 192.168.15.1; also to have DNS Server of 4.2.2.2 and backup of 4.2.2.3.

When the Ethernet cable from the Vonage router is put into my laptop, the internet connection is fine, but taking the same cable to my desktop PC (newly installed XP Pro); there is no internet.

Hi there westsidehf, and welcome to TSG.

Issue 1 (and possibly part of Issue 2): You might want to check Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, scroll down to DHCP client and make sure this service is started, and set to start automatically. Double-click on the service, and change to Automatic in the 'Startup type' drop-down box.

Issue 2: If you have a USB flash drive, you can download the drivers through your laptop, and copy and install the drivers from there. But that being said, you should have got the driver disk with the card in the first place.

Issue 3: Is your Windows XP updated to Service Pack 2 or 3? I know that with the original release (and possibly SP1 as well), that there was an issue with drives above 137GB, in that it would not read the space above that limit. I think the problem also existed with the BIOS around that time (around 2001-2002, I think).

As for the formatting thing... probably not needed. If you can, take the 500GB drive out, and connect it via a USB drive enclosure to your laptop. If it is recognised, it is probably just a result of the above problem.

Check these out, in any case. It is a cheap and easy first look into your issues, and can help us rule things out if it turns out not to be the case.

I am useless with computers. I was able to access the internet for a couple of months through my ethernet cable, plugged in to the port at my university in my room. However, recently I haven't been able to get onto the internet, and get the message 'cannot to communicate with your primary DNS server (fe80::1c2a:3943:f118:8dd3%8)' also, i have noticed after doing ipconfig /all that my laptop has no physical address. I have contacted 4 different IT technicians at my university and they say its nothing to do with the port in my wall, however they are still unable to come up with a solution. I would greatly appreciate any help.

A:no physical address, no communication with primary DNS server

A big help would be some information.
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

I am using Windows 7 in 64 bit and have connected to web with Netgear DGN2000 Modem/Router.

I am trying to set 3 Address Reservation's for 3 items on my home network. 2 will work but the 3rd and main PC has a Mac address starting with 90 (unlike others that start in 00) when trying to set I get an error saying "Invalid Mac Address".

Internet research suggests that you should save with "00" inlieu of "90" and then do a backup of settings. Then edit actaul backup file to set the real address back to "90" and then restore that file to the router.

Well I tried that and restore says that's invalid file. I then tried a backup file as a normal backup process with no edits (also no address reservation for main PC) and the same error appears. So don't know what good a backup of settings is if that does not work.

Are there any suggestions or should I just forget and deal with the ever changing internal IP addresses?

Cheers

Hello and Welcome to TSF

1. Incompatible add-ons: What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop
and choose Start Without Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

I'm using two windows in my PC
Vista Ultimate and XP SP2 (Both 31-bit)
I enable this feature in XP by adding "\PAE" in boot.ini in XP,
but in Vista there is no boot.ini file,
so how can i enable this feature in Vista,
Ya my processor, motherboard & both windows support this feature

A:How Can I Enable Physical Address Extension(pae) Feature In Vista?

This Microsoft KnowledgeBase Article discusses PAE and Vista.Supposedly, you can enable PAE in Vista by running "BCDEdit", the boot configuration editor that is included in Vista. You should run this in "administrative mode".Typing "cmd" in the "start" "search" space, and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter. This runs "cmd" in Administrator Mode. Then type - "run" Type - BCDEdit /set PAE forceenableOf course, if your system didn't meet the requirements shown in that KnowledgeBase article, it won't work.Let us know if this helped, OK?Oh, it appears that "BCDEdit /deletevalue PAE" should remove the command, again, at the Admin level.

When I click on a link in an email, the IE7 browser opens and includes Port 80 as part of the address. For example:

http://www.nameofwebsite.com:80/home.html

As part of my work, I have to copy and paste web addresses all day long; I don't want the port number included, so I have been deleting it manually - it's driving me nuts and costing me a lot of time.

How can we force IE7 to only show the normal address without the port number, when clicking on a link in an email, link this:

http://www.nameofwebsite.com/home.html

I appreciate any help.

After I had solved my previous issue with Paypal, it began recurring again. When I got the same "403 - denied" message when trying to access the USPS tracking site, I began to wonder if my IP address wasn't causing the problems all along. I search "what is my IP" address, and it came up with the same IP number, but several sites showed my location differently. One shows my location as Hanoi, Vietnam, another shows my location as Phnom Penh. Phnom Penh is probably closer to correct, as I AM in Sihanoukville, about 125 miles southwest of Phnom Penh.
I can see why both USPS and Paypal might have problems with this. I can probably convince Paypal to let it through, but how can I get the USPS to do the same?

A:My IP address shows me at two locations!

This type of thing is perfectly normal due to the way that the internet works- Not all location software is the same - some show me at my real location others show me at a generic location in Central UK, others show me elsewhere

I am trying to get my ethernet card address so I can use a network. When I run ipconfig, a window appears, then disappears. Why is the window disappearing?
Is there another way to get the address?

A:Ethernet address

What system are you runing, 98SE?
If yes.
Running ipconfig from the Start/Run buttonthe ipconfig windows always disappears!

You want to either open the DOS prompt window and run ipconfig/all (to get the MAC address info) from there.
Or from the Start/Run button you can run winipcfg and you'll the info in a dialog box.

My windows 10 desktop recently did a few strange things, can't find a match for a virus or malware. I can't boot to safe mode, does not recognize the F8 key during boot up. My login password to the computer suddenly didn't work, I was using my Microsoft
account password so I could change it outside the computer and got logged in. Now the only place I get internet is with ipv6 the computer is using 192.168.0.1 and my router is set to 192.168.1.1. I have tried to release and reset it, recover from a earlier
point in time, reset the wifi configuration. I even static set an ip address that was in the correct set but it still does not connect in ipv4. Any suggestions as to how to fix this?

How can I ping point to point, or ethernet to ethernet when there is no IP address assigned? Is that possible? I tried using a MAC address with Ping but that did not work. In this case its a PC to a ethernet to 100BaseF (fiber) conversion and I want to send pings to test the link (no other routers or switches involved, just point to point). Any insight appreciated

A:How Ping Ethernet to Ethernet when no IP address?

Nope, PING is a OSI level three function, it doesn't work for MAC addresses.
