Windows June update - broken gadgets, windows help and more

Q: Windows June update - broken gadgets, windows help and more

I had been away and when I came back and turned on the computer it had downloaded several new updates. I have windows 7 home premium 64 bit running Internet Explorer 9. I have been dealing with this issue trying foolishly by myself to fix it by doing several system restores and uninstalling Internet Explorer 9 .. only to find that 8 does fix the problem but I cannot reinstall 9 anymore so I have to do a restore to get 9 back.

Anyway, Gadgets do not work properly. CPU monitor shows the thing moving but no numbers. Calender Gadget just shows orange or white square.

My AOL cannot look on the web anymore (I only use it for an old email but found that my emails couldn't display properly either.)

And to really seal the deal.. windows help does not display properly either.

Internet Explorer 8 makes everything work again but I like 9 which this update on top of 9 screws my windows user account up. A guest account or a new account do not have these issues.

I am sorry for the long post but I would appreciate any help as I have been staring at this screen for many many hours straight. No old system restore will fix it. No SFC scan, etc.

Preferred Solution: Windows June update - broken gadgets, windows help and more

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello plastisman and welcome to Seven Forums.

With IE9 installed, do you see those June updates listed in the Windows Update History? If yes, you could try to uninstall them and see if your computer works properly. If it does, reinstall the June updates one or two at a time then use your computer for a while. If everything still works correctly install the next couple of updates. If the machine suddenly stops working you've narrowed down which of the updates might be the problem.

You could also try running a System File Checker scan to see if any files were damaged or corrupted by the June updates. If the scan finds any problems, run it 3-4 times as some file may not be fixed on the first or even second go-around due to dependencies (for example, file C may have to wait for file B to be fixed and file G may have to wait for file C to be fixed.)

I recently did an unusually long Windows update that took about an hour in total, and once my computer was running again, Windows gadgets said "Windows Desktop Gadgets has stopped working" and then I tried to open Skype which also said "Skype has stopped working". I tried updating Java, a second Windows update, uninstalling and reinstalling Skype, advanced uninstalling Skype and reinstalling, but nothing I'm doing seems to be having any effect. I'm completely out of ideas, and was hoping someone could help me to solve this?

A:After Windows update Skype and Windows Desktop Gadgets no longer run.

Today June 19 2012 I received this.Did anyone get this also? After Microsoft's service had been cracked by Flame, my trust in Microsoft has dropped to zero.So I would need confirmation if anyone else had thisupdate today (19 June 2012).The interesting thing is, mostly it gives a link forthe update to read more info about a certain update. But here today is no description whatsoever.edit: I should mention the odd thing about this is, I lookedinto my update settings and it was set to automatically installand update windows. So it should have downloaded this and installed. So why the difference? It makes me feel uneasy, to say the least.Advise pleaseThank You

A:Urgent - Windows 7 Update Service Update June 19 2012

I called Microsoft just now.
They established a remote session directly to my PC.
After verification that my OS is legit etc. they had a look at this.

They recommend that I reinstall Windows from one of their ISO images
and not from the HP recovery partition.

The guy said he wouldn't trust that update as there is the information link

I only can do what he says, downloading that 3 GB ISO and burn the DVD
and reinstall Windows.

So, if you get the SAME looking update, my advise is as his.
Don't install that update.

Microsoft Releases Broken Windows 7 Update to Fix Broken Windows 7 Update

Windows updates are still a huge pain in the neck for Microsoft, as the company is often hit with reports of failed installs and bugs caused by the botched patches that it ships every month.

This is what happened with the Windows 7 August Monthly patch rollup KB4034664, which introduced a series of problems affecting users with two monitors.

Basically, the update broke down the display on the second monitor, causing rendering issues that required a manual workaround provided by Microsoft itself and involving enabling Desktop Composition and then configure the main monitor in the monitor layout.

Earlier this week, however, Microsoft attempted to address the problem with a new patch, which would have made the manual workaround pretty much unneeded. But it looks like the KB4039884 update in charging of doing the whole magic is broken as well and introducing a series of other problems on Windows 7 systems.

New update, new bugs
As Woody Leonhard notes, there are users complaining that this update, despite installing fine, restores a number of update files to old versions, which in its turn triggers notifications for more than 20 important and recommended updates in Windows Update, even though all these patches have already been installed.

Removing the update eliminates the bug as well, but without it, the only way to deal with the dual monitor bug is to turn to the manual workaround.

I did a restart, logged in and screen remained blank. I tried to restart several times and had the same problem. Finally I did a system restore and booted okay. I then deleted all files and folders in Windows/SoftwareDistribution and changed the windows update setting to not check for updates because I didn't want the update to apply after any restarts. How should I go about fixing the problem so I can get and install updates. Any help would be appreciated and sorry for being long-winded.

A:June Windows 8.1 update caused desktop not to display

I have the exact same problem after installing the updates. I noticed that explorer.exe didn't start on my computer. If I start it manually it does show up in de task manager but nothing else happens.
Edit: I've added a screenshot of the updates.

Edit2: I have installed all the updates except for KB2969339 on a different windows and I didn't experience any problems. So KB2969339 seems to be the one causing all the trouble. You can rightclick on the update in the update list and click hide to hide it so you never accidentally install it again. However, I don't know anything about computers so I don't know if doing that will cause more problems later on.

A:Windows 10 Update: June 27, 2017—KB4022716 (OS Build 15063.447)

Today isn't Patch Tuesday, but Microsoft still released cumulative updates for all versions of Windows 10. The firm seems to be doing it twice a month now, as the last set of builds arrived on June 13.

As usual, there are no new front-facing features. Instead, all of these updates focus on various fixes.

If you're on the Creators Update, you'll see build 15063.447, or KB4022716. You can download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog here.
This is what got fixed:
Addressed an issue introduced by KB4022725 where Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge printing from a frame may result in 404 not found or blank page printed.
Addressed issue where network printers may fail to install when using the printer vendor?s setup software on machines with less than 4 GB of RAM. These printers will install properly if you install using the Settings app or from Devices and Printers in Control Panel.
Addressed issue that causes high memory usage for the Camera app on mobile platforms, which reduces battery life. Any app that uses a media capture element (MCE) or media element (ME) and plays 1080p will consume a lot of power, which will significantly reduce battery life.

Welcome to Sevenforums,

Maybe first, see to uninstall the IE10 updates kb2838727 & kb2859903 from the Programs & Features => show installed updates.

Try uninstall the flash player (see if it works after), then updating flash player to v 11.7.700.224 to the latest.

About this update:

I have a fresh installation of Windows 7 RC and everything was fine. I have no idea what may have caused this, but on day 2 of using Windows 7 RC, any desktop gadgets that move (like the CPU meter or the clock with its second hand enabled) cause the sidebar.exe process to go to 50% CPU utilisation (which is 100% of one core on my dual core CPU).These gadgets then just become unresponsive and I have to close them. I can only keep the Weather gadget on because it doesn't have any animations. I have all Windows updates and the latest NVIDIA driver from Windows Update and even their own website doesn't help. There is something wrong with my gadgets. I have never installed any extra gadgets. What could it be?

A:Windows 7 Gadgets slow to respond, 50% CPU utilisation with gadgets that "move"

The problem seemed to now have fixed itself at last. I think it was after removing AVG and installing Avira AntiVir, but that's the closest guess I can make. AVG was VERYYYY slow at startup.

Windows Update broken for some Windows 7 users

Several Windows 7 users are reporting that Windows Update is broken, throwing up error 80248015. A detailed thread about the issue is open on Microsoft Answers forum where many have reported the error.

Users are receiving the following message when they try to run Windows Update on machines running Windows 7:

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
Mary Jo Foley from ZDNet reported a different error, " Windows could not search for new updates." However, the point is that there's a problem which the Redmond-based company has to fix at the earliest.

As per Computerworld, the main cause is likely that Microsoft forgot to change the expiration date, which is why users are seeing the errors with Windows Update. A temporary solution is to set the date to something older than March 12, 2017, and run Windows Update.

There's no word from Microsoft about the issue, so Windows 7 users have to wait until the problem is resolved by the company. Microsoft confirmed that Windows 7 will get security updates through mid-January 2020, so we should expect a fix for this issue as there are plenty of users who are still using the operating system.

I'm not a big fan of the gadgets that ship with Window releases. Instead I tend to pick up a few from third party sources such as Addgadget.com or OrbLog ? Sidebar Gadgets.

However, since I upgraded to the CP from DP, most of these third party gadgets are working properly.

One of my favorites: 7bar, is particularly screwed up. It gives me an error like this
All of the others that I have tried relate to hardware monitoring.

Addgadget.com's network meter for example can't see any of my network adapters.

The GPU Observer from blog.orbmu2k.de can't even detect a GPU.

I know that Microsoft has stopped hosting most of the Desktop Gadgets on their site but have they also dropped support, period?

If you could use gadgets, you'd never have to use Metro.

Hi Khelle,
Your machine seems to have lot of corrupted windows file. You might want to give 'chkdsk /r' a try. For doing that, boot on safe mode and then launch a command prompt, then type 'chkdsk /r'. Please take in note that this operation could take several hours.

Hello! I am extremely behind on updates, honestly never bothered with them, until one day I did. It said windows failed to configure and it had to revert the changes. Ever since then, I can't use Windows Update. Attempting to check for updates gives an error saying the Windows Update service isn't running even though it is, so I went into the services and turned it off and back on, still says it isn't running. After a reboot and several BSOD's (Ongoing problem, although Windows Update is the focus here.) it still doesn't acknowledge the existence of it's own service.
The person helping me in the original thread told me to include "CBS log" in the title of this thread, so I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say he wants me to attach it too, probably. (Oh wait... It's too big to attach... Here's a dropbox download instead, then.)
If you haven't read the original thread, here's all the steps I've taken so far (Or at least, the one's that are relevant to Windows Update)
Downloaded and ran the Windows Update troubleshooter (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/gp/windows-update-issues/en-us)
It found and fixed 4 things. Windows Update still didn't acknowledge it's own service, rebooting or restarting the service didn't help.
Ran the Windows Update troubleshooter a couple more times and got mixed results. The overall outcome was the same every time, but the basic report kept showing different results, the second time it showed 5 things found and 3 fixed, 3rd time ... Read more

Hi guys,

Today I started experiencing some strange problems with Vista's sidebar. I've never had this problem before and I've spent hours trying to fix the problem. Basically the problem I'm having looks something like this:

I've just dragged a few of the default gadgets to the sidebar to show you the problem I'm having. The Weather gadget seems to be the only one that is functioning correctly. I also cannot install user created gadgets from gallery.live.com.

I've already tried the many different combinations of re-registering various DLL files that I've seen around on the Internet but this hasn't made a difference. Could this be a problem with Java or XML? Is there a way of totally reinstalling the Vista Sidebar without having to a) do a System Restore or b) create a Vista installation disk to do a repair with?

Cheers for your help.

Clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Found and installed a driver for my rtl8191su USB-WiFi adapter at the Realtek site. Went to Windows Update and let it update everything over the WiFi connection. One of the updates was a rtl8191su driver. After that installed the WiFi lost connection and the driver wasn't loaded. Now it complains that there is no driver for the "rtl8191su Selective Suspend Enabler". Uninstalling the device in Control Panel and scanning hardware gets me right back to having no loaded driver. Manually trying to install the Realtek driver won't work, it says there is nothing that matches the hardware. What a complete crock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was working fine before the Windows Update. In the Control Panel for this device, "Rollback driver" is grayed out. So as well as putting in a useless broken driver, Windows Update didn't save the previous working configuration. Nice.

Anyone got any ideas how to back out the updated driver and get this working again?

Since the November updates my Windows update is completely broken with so many
problems i am at my wits end with it.
Firstly when i go to services.msc there is no (background intelligent transfer service)
and no Windows Update showing, I have Automatic Update in the services showing as
enabled and on auto but when i click start (Error 127) appears.

I have just about tried everything to get Windows update working again without any
success at all.
I have scanned my system with Norton Internet Security, SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes
Anti-Malware, also done the sfc / scannow command and when doing this i keep getting asked
for the Installation disc for service packs 2 and 3 so that files can be copied back to my computer.
But being a Dell computer i do not have any Installation disc for windows XP.

I have also used Microsoft Fix-it tool but errors still not fixed, have also used other tools that say
they can fix my problems but at a cost to... Read more

I believe a virus or trojan from a long way back damaged or corrupted the Windows Update and App components. All my metro apps cannot connect to 'servers' or the internet

and Windows Update could not even find updates until I tried to mend it myself and ran multiple fix it Microsoft applications to return the Service to my computer. Fortunately, now it searches but doesn't find anything.

I believe these fundamental components have been corrupted or deleted by a third party program (which I deleted with Norton Internet Security a while back) and my machine can no longer connect to Microsoft servers for updates and app support.

I've tried almost everything apart from a full factory reset and I'm really not planning on doing that as I don't currently have an external backup disk.

Will post any further necessary info required.

My Windows 7 update is just broken somehow. Whenever I try to manually update, I always end up with a svchost with 50% cpu usage (i.e., one core maxed out) and nothing ever finishes. It just sits there saying "Checking for updates". I've tried a number of solutions on the web - manual intallation of a couple of hotfixes Windows6.1-KB3112343-x64 and Windows6.1-KB3102810-x64, removing the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, and being oh so patient. Nothing has worked. It just hangs there and spins.

When I look at my update history, I see that the last update listed is KB2825645 from August 11. Nothing has come in since then.

So, I have just disabled updates totally and downloaded the cumulative ISO files from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/913086 for the missing dates.

I want to install the ones for Windows 7 64bit. Can I just install them directly, in order? I know I am going to get reboot prompts after some of them, so do I have to do it right then or can I update, say, an entire month's worth and then reboot?

I somehow managed to destroy windows update. it cannot find updates anymore. Ive gotten 2 error codes: 80248014 and (not sure) 80073712. I have tried using a program i found on the windows club that was supposed to fix it but didnt, i tried the System Update Readiness Tool, but it failed. I also read somewhere on this site to delete the softwareupdate folder contents, which i did, but that didnt do it either. what else can i do?

I tried doing a Win10 upgrade on my laptop using the Media Creation tool. It hung during the "Checking for Updates" phase. I canceled the update and it hung in the cleanup phase. I eventually rebooted. Win7 seems to be ok ... except ...
I noticed that we have not installed updates since December! (We rarely use the laptop and I guess we just haven't checked.) There were over 70 fixes to download and install. But the download hung at 0%.
To reduce the number of fixes to download I undid the option to download fixes for Microsoft non-Windows products. That reduced the number of fixes to 44, but the download still hung at 0%. And the option to include non-Windows fixes is gone. The web page that supposedly installs Microsoft Update no longer has the option to install. Can I get this back?
The first thing I did was go back to a week old Restore Point. And then a month old Restore Point. Neither helped. Maintenance downloads still hang at 0%. Win10 maintenance still downloads and installs to my desktop so I don't think this is a problem with the Microsoft maintenance server.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I know the smartest thing would be to proceed with the Win10 installation and forget the missing Win7 maint, but I'm not sure how to do that if the upgrade process doesn't work.

Hey guys
So after preforming fresh OS install did the drivers and then went to Windows Updates, the updates came out fast installed the first wave very smoothly then when reaching SP1 and installing it the Windows Updates was stuck on "searching for updates",did another OS install but this time kept SP1 for last, all were installed until no more updates were appearing except for SP1,installed it and bam Windows Update was broken again.
So what do i do here ? i've already done some of the "fixes" and nothing works,as soon as SP1 is installed the whole thing breaks,i've tried to install SP1 manually right after the format and the same thing happens.....

Several errors going on when i try n run these programs. Looks like some key registry entries have been deleted by something/someone.

Windows update says something like: the service cannot be started because it is not running, windows may need to be restarted.

Winows defender says something like: windows defender is turned off, if you are using another application that checks for harmful software check use the action center to check that programs status. I downloaded and installed FSS like was recommended in another post and have attatched the log. In that same thread it was recommended to check the event viwer to which i had error 7036 in the service control manager. I also attatched the log for that.

I started looking into these problems because google links are being redirected to ads... and research led me thru all these steps to finally give up and post here. I've run Rkill, AVG, Malwarebytes, TDS and one of those logs also showed me the services were missing for defender/udate/etc.

Hopefully i've done the due diligence here and the experts can help me. If I haven't done enough, i am very willing to comply with all request to fix my ladies computer. THANKS.

Hello all I'm new to the forum and I like to say a warm hello and ask for help.

I migrated from from hdd to ssd on my Samsung series 7 laptop today and everything has gone very well with the exception of windows updates which are now non functioning. I have tried both the DISM and sfc/scannow procedures as well as numerous other possible solutions I have come across during the day.

I am now truly at a loss as to how to fix the issue, the error code coming up is 80070490. If you can help I will be in your debt.
Kind regards,

I'm using Windows XP 32-bit, SP3.
After being infected by some viruses, which I have since removed with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Combofix, I have found that Windows Update doesn't work anymore.

When I go to the Windows Update link in the Security tab of Internet Explorer 8, it brings me to the Windows Update page at Microsoft, where it asks if you want to update Express or Custom speed. After I click "Express," it brings me to an error page stating: "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem. [Error number: 0x80070002]"

Looking into the problem, I discovered that Automatic Updates and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service were both needed to use Windows Update. When I tried to start either of them in services.msc, I get:

"Could not start the [program] service on Local Computer.

Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."
So, yeah. I guess the problem is either: the files are missing or damaged, or the registry for the files was corrupted... or something.

After an update, windows hung at "preparing to configure windows don't turn off your computer" for 3 hours. I hard shut down, booted into safe mode, did a system restore to right before the update, and restarted. Now windows is not really working, dwm didn't start properly so I just see a black screen with a cursor (ctrl + alt + del worked to bring up task manager), various services (internet, windows update, the desktop background won't load) aren't working, etc...

What's the best way to repair this without a complete reinstall?

any ideas what might be wrong?

A:Solved: windows broken after failed update

When you use the F8 key at boot up to get to the Options menu is there an option for 'Repair Your Computer'. If so select it and follow the prompts to get to the recovery options and then select Startup repair, you may need to run it 3 or 4 times to complete the repairs.

If there is no option for 'Repair your Computer' you can do the same by booting from a Windows 7 DVD.

Let me know how it goes.

It used to work very well.

Is it because some new process prevent rsync from working, or is it because some back-end processes/services not started?
Please shed some light.

I hope this is the right place to ask, sorry if not.

Windows Update hasn't been working for me for the last few days. It takes a long time to check for updates, and fails to install them. (Error code: 80004002. I've been reading up about it, I've tried running DISM and SFC, with no success.

SFC says: could not start the repair service.
DISM says: error 3, c:\windows does not appear to be valid. I've used the /online option.
DISM log says: Unable to retrieve servicing stack folder for DLL search path modification. - CDISMOSServiceManager::SetDllSearchPath(hr:0x80070003).

Which is fine, it can't find some .dll. I thought it was supposed to fix missing/corrupt .dlls.
What can I do, to repair the repair service?
Or repair/reinstall this servicing stack?
I don't want to reinstall/refresh the whole system.

Thanks in advance, for your help!

Hello everyone,
So I have been at this for a week and a half now and still no luck, although I somehow fixed it once it broke again. Anyway, I had used Windows Update to download Service Pack 1 since I need to use IE10 for a job, it is required for that company otherwise I'd stick with Chrome. I have tried so many different solutions a have gotten no results. I even tried today to update and repair the computer through the Windows 7 disc but I get told that windowsanytimeupgradeui is missing for update and repair tells me that it can't be done automatically. I know for sure that this is from the Service Pack 1 because I had done other updates with 0 problems, but both times I tried SP1 I got the same 80072EFE error, which occasionally switches to 80080005 for a bit. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I have checked my connection, tried at a friends house, used Malwarebytes, Avast, HerdProject, Hijack This, Ccleaner, Easyclean, AdwCleaner, TDSS Killer, and various other programs to search for malware and viruses. One issue that kept showing up on Ccleaner was wuaucpl.cpl and the only "malware" that was found were cracks I'm using, except for a file called "custom.dll" that I have no idea exactly what it is for. In the Winsxs folder I have over a thousand files in there folder for files waiting to be renamed. One thing that was requested of me a few days ago on another forum was to use Rescue Disk, although I was not told whether to run i... Read more

I believe this happened to my son's Windows 10 lap top.
I just need to know if it's possible to "break into" the loop he is in, so use the information in this link

This is, supposedly, the "short form" of the Fix

delete folder C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\XblGameSave
delete registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\XblGameSave
Re-run the update
But he needs to get into Windows !

Windows Update really f****d up my wife's laptop. Her Yoga 2 11 was crippled in every sense of the word.  Updates killed her Windows installation, which I can deal with. That's a non-issue minus the data she lost. What really screwed her though is that her laptop now does not recognize that a battery is plugged in. Let me expand upon this a bit: Windows (and Linux) do not recognize a battery is plugged in; the laptop WILL run off battery power; the laptop will NOT charge the battery; when running with the AC adpater plugged in, unplugging it will trigger the low battery LED flash on the power button & continue to run on battery power. I've tried installing the Lenovo battery software. I've tried uninstalling the Windows power drivers. I've tried installting different Linux power management packages on Ubuntu and Mint from a live USB. I've tried a fresh Windows install on a fresh hard drive (works fine minus the battery). I've tried new batteries. Hell, I've taken apart one of the batteries to make sure the battery was ok (it was fine). I've tested the motherboard for electrical continuity, and it all checks out. The one and only thing I cannot do is flash a new BIOS because, here we go again, the battery is not recognized. I'm literally at a loss at this point. Her warranty has, of course, expired. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

I think my system is totally screwed. There are numerous things I came across, I don't know if they are at all related:

1) When I try to use Windows Update to look for new updates (or install win 10 as I wanted), it fails, in some time, with error code 80080005.

2) When I try to restart I am left with logging off screen for like...forever, I usually give up in an hour and hard-reboot.

3) Next problem that I can see is that my system activation under System information reads Status not available, and Product ID: Not available (I have a legal copy of windows).

4) Also I wanted to do some cleanup of files (like the downloaded Win 10 installation files I had from before) so I ran cleanmgr.exe which, although running as a process in task manager, never shows up beyond selecting the disk to clean.

Could anybody help me with my system?

Admin function broken after Jan 9th Windows Update
I have Windows 7 Ultimate N 64bit SP1.
Normally, I do CTRL-ALT-DEL to open Task Manager.
Once it’s open, I click on “Show all users” and then it shows me all the processes.
Today, January  9, 2018, after installing everything that Windows Update wanted to install, I rebooted. It suggested one more update, and I installed that, too, and then rebooted again.
After the reboot, I opened Task Manager in my usual way, but when I clicked on “show all users” nothing happens.  I waited a while, tried again, still nothing.  I rebooted, tried again but it still won’t  “show all users”.
Then I decided to try this:
I went to C:\Windows\System32\ and rightclicked to “open as administrator”.
It gave me this message:
Windows cannot find 'C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
So after todays Update, taskmgr will open fine normally, but it won’t open “as administrator”.
And when it opens normally, it won’t allow me to press the button to show all users.
System restore has always worked for me.  So I decided to do a system restore back to the point before the Windows Updates.
First I tried to do System Restore by going to
Control Panel >  Backup and Restore
And then then I clicked on
"Recover system settings or your com... Read more
