Early Benchmark data of P72 with various configurations of Lenovo & Samsung 970 EVO m2 ssd

Q: Early Benchmark data of P72 with various configurations of Lenovo & Samsung 970 EVO m2 ssd

Thanks to some fine input from others I completed my initial testing of various configurations of m2 SSD drives in my new P72 Thinkpad. What I was wanting to determine was how each option performed and then how they measured up against each other. I knew I did not want the standard out of the box 512Gb NVMe drive that came with the P72 but given I could not get it now without I got it with the base drive. I have other places I can use it so it is not for naught. I purchased 2x 2Tb Samsung 970EVO m2 SSD's for use in my P72. My assumption was I would want to use them in RAID0 configuration but I wanted to see the data first. For testing I used Anvil Pro. There are others, probably better perhaps but this is what I used. I have an internal spreadsheet for my own purposes as I wanted to see how my existing systems measured against the P72. So others understand what system/setup the names on my graph represent here is a summary: Sam 970 RAID0 = P72 with 2x 2Tb Samsung 970EVO in RAID0 configurationSam 970 RAID1 = P72 with 2x 2Tb Samsung 970EVO in RAID1 conigurationSam 970 = P72 with 1x 2Tb Samsung 970EVO in slot 0 standard formatLenovo Base = P72 with Lenovo Base 521Gb m2 in slot 0 standard formatSam 960 = Custom Win10 desktop with 1x 1Tb Samsung 960EVO m2 on Asus z170 MB with 4Ghz Skylake CPU, 32Gb DDR4Sam 860 SSD = 1x Samsung 4Tb 2.5" SSD in data slot for P72. NO DATA YET. NOT INSTALLED.Sam Sata III = Standard Samsung 5.25" 7200RPM 3Tb HD in Win10 System aboveLSI RAID10 = LSI PCI Hardware RAID controller for 6Tb (4x3Tb HGST) in Win10 System aboveNAS CentOS = Network 6Tb RAID10 NAS made from i5 CPU on Asus Z170MB running CentOSNAS QNAP = Network 6Tb RAID10 NAS using QNAP 419 So here is the data.P72 Configuration - E-2176 Xeon CPU, 16Gb ECC dram, P4200 GPU, 512Gb Lenovo SSD, 4K screen Configurations tested:1) Lenovo Base - This is the unit as I received it.2) Sam 970 - I removed the Lenovo m2 drive and installed a Samsung 970 in the same slot, reformatted and fresh install and ran benchmark.3) Sam 970 RAID1 - Installed second 970, went into BIOS and enabled RST and configured a RAID1 drive, fresh install and ran benchmark4) Sam 970 RAID0 - Reformatted RAID1 to RAID0, fresh install and ran benchmarks. Rather than paste up a gazillion screenshots I compiled the data in Excel and made 5 charts, 4 of which are the raw data and the 5th is the Anvil benchmark number. The first is the response time test: Next is the # of MB Read and Write tests. A few of these are bogus as the speed is so fast on all of the SSD drives the test does not allow for an increased limit. Next is the IO Operation count Then the speed in MB/s Last the overall benchmark rating While the results were not entirely unexpected a few things did surprise me. First, the stand alone speed of the 970 EVO in the P72 is a lot slower than what I know it does in desktop systems. Typical desktop read speed rates are around 3500 Mbps. I was only getting 3000 at best. I believe I saw a comment from one posting person that said this had to do with some limitations of the Intel Chip Set. For my, my use and what I need I went with the RAID0 configuration. Best overall performance and a 3.6Tb formatted OS drive does not hurt. When my adapter kit arrives I will install the other 4Tb 860 SSD for my data drive. I have to say, now that my concerns of how I can perform the upgrades my self (much thanks to the many posters of my previous thread) this is one sweet machine. The screen is awesome. I've not run any graphics benchmarks or poked around inside to see actual hardware but I have a new Wacom Pro 24" pen display that is 10bit with 4K resolution and the brillance and wide spectrum of colors look the same. Looking forward to working with my 3D apps on this connected to my Wacom. Anyway, thought I would pass this info on as I'm sure others may have had similar questions on the configurations. I'm no authority but it gives at least a start of some data points for others to look at. Cheers!

Preferred Solution: Early Benchmark data of P72 with various configurations of Lenovo & Samsung 970 EVO m2 ssd

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
I have a Dell XPS 15 9560 with a SK Hynix 512GB who gives me 1,800 and 800 mb/s.

I have the option to choose a Samsung PM961 512GB and I want to see a real benchmark from anyone, I want to confirm that this drive is faster.
I can not find recent reviews about it.

If I can get more speed, would be awesome for me.
And yeah I can notice the difference between my 960 EVO on my desktop and my laptop (SK Hynix 512GB).

Hi

Just upgraded my laptop to ssd, done loads of searching on here for optimal settings and used samsung magican to help me out.

as it is quite a new laptop I set the hdd back to factory and then cloned on to the ssd.

The laptop runs very fast now, but its giving me very high benchmarks! are these normal

A:Samsung 840 evo 240gb with weird high benchmark

Yes you have rapid mode enabled. Give your SSD a few days and you'll find its even faster. These SSD are very fast the most noticeable upgrade that has come a long in a very long time and these 850 are the best of the bunch for sure.

I have both 840 pro and 850 pro they are both very fast and rapid mode really makes a difference.

HiIs it possible to change my SSD to a Samsung 950PRO NVMe disk? Will BIOS find that SSD? If no, when will we have a new BIOS that could do that?www.samsung.com/.../overview.htmlBest RegardsUbbe1

Samsung 950 Pro work and boot fine on XPS 9343 just make sure that you install Windows 10 in GPT partition for UEFI not MBR. The problem is XPS 9343 only supported PCI-E x2 not x4 max read speed is around 800Mb/s and write around 700Mb/s on ATTO.

Hello all, I received my P51 one week ago, with Xeon 1535M, 16G SSD and 4K display. I just tried to run Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to learn more about the CPU internal tuning options and assess the performance of my system. Surprisingly, when running Intel XTU benchmark, the system has shown repeated current limit throttling, while showing very limited thermal throttling. Net result gets never above 800-820 Marks while I expected a much higher number (several thousands?) according to other threads here regarding P51 thermal throttling issues.  I ran the benchmark in the following conditions : AC power, BIOS set with SpeedStep and max performance enabled, windows power profile on max perforamce, I disabled kaspresky antivirus just in case, grapchics in discrete mode (ie. Nvidia enabled as default). below the screenshot of XTU :  [URL=https://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=556305P51IntelXTU.jpg][IMG]https://img15.hostingpics.... I would appreciate your thoughts there : are all those numbers normal (800 Marks for such a system) ? did I miss something regarding my system setup to ensure it's working at ful throttle ? I would like t oavoid returning it to Lenovo if it appears something is wrong with my CPU. Thanks in advance for your feedback,Philippe

I am experiencing an issue with my P51 laptop going to sleep after 2.5 minutes even though I have Windows power setting for 1 hr both for running off battery and plugged in.  This only seems to occur while unit is in docking station (Model 40A50230US, P/N sd20a06045, serial M2D04C37).  If I reset my machine, the issue goes away, but will eventually reoccur again. -Jon

Im currently trying out some recommendations from the internet like undervolting the CPU and having the power limit at 50W (CPU) and im currently getting 2678 points in cinebench r20, and the cpu is sitting comfortably at 70-72 degrees C at full load. (-0,150v undervolt) Is this good or is there something else i should change?

In this discussion, Amy from Lenovo recommends that we purchase Lenovo SSDs if we want thermal management: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Can-I-add-a-Samsung-950-Pro-NVMe-SSD-to-... The link no longer directs us to a particular model. So I perform a search on the Lenovo site and see (among others) this model: ThinkPad 256GB SAMSUNG PCIe NVME TLC OPAL M.2 SSD http://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/memory-and-storage/storage/HDD-BO-ThinkPad-M-2... What is this? A Samsung SSD rebranded as a Lenovo SSD? Would I gain in compatibility with such a drive or not, and specifically regarding thermal management? Also, is there a misprint below concerning the read speed? "ThinkPad 256GB SAMSUNG PCIe NVME TLC OPAL M.2 SSD supporting PCIe 3.0 interface standard up to 4 lanes shows much faster performance than previous SATA SSDs. It's sequential performance is up to 300MB/s for read operation and 1700MB/s for write operation by 4 lanes. Test-Prove 100% Compatible with ThinkPad machines. " That has to be 3000MB/S, right?

A:Thinkpad-Samsung or Lenovo-Samsung NVMe SSD? What is this?

My impression is that even Lenovo themselves does not have a clue.

I've noticed for some time that my relatively new ~1 year Lenovo Flex 4 yoga, which has switchable graphics, has been running slower.  For instance, VLC has been unable to run certain movies, and running gameshow to record my powerpoint talks now leads to freezing and inability to save movies.  I finally found some free time to try a very basic 3D game (broforce, the overworld, 2 seconds into the game), and then my computer instantly slowed and shut itself off.  I downloaded the Heaven Benchmark 4.0 and the same issue occured, it barely rendered graphics and then froze.  I have all of the latest drivers and updates installed via a clean install.   Put simply, my computer is now completely unable to perform the most basic tasks that seem to be gpu related without slowing to a crawl and shutting itself off.  This includes very old games, new games, benchmarks, and even python rendering medium to large images.   Please please advise some tests I can do to see if this is a software issue.  I work a very very very hard job and this computer is my lifeline, and I need it not to have this issue.

Hey,

Has anyone tried to use the Samsung Data Migration software for other brands? I have a new Crucial SSD and, faced with a 263MB (!) Acronis d/l over a torpid internet connection, am wondering if my Sammy disc will work.

Anyone?

A:SSD Samsung Data Migration software question

The last I checked, a Macrium Reflect download is under 50 GB and can clone or image to a new disk.

I wouldn't think it would hurt to at least try the Samsung software, but it might balk outright and quit if it does not see a Samsung drive as the destination.

Ok so i had a little issue a couple days back, ended up solving it but a new one has kinda come up. When i used Samsungs Data Migration, all seemed to be working fine, plug it in for the first time boot it up seems to be going well and then bang! Windows 7 is not genuine, consider activating. Go to activate it and it seems like i cant. Did notice the OEM in the key but i thought that only mattered with big changes like motherboard and CPU not a bloody SSD.

Any solutions guys? Would like to use the new SSD asap, back on my old intel one for now.

Hello Dell Community!
I just got the Dell 7559 and added an 250 GB Samsung M.2 SSD and cloned the 1TB onto it. In disk manager it shows a partition of 11.41GB that was not cloned onto the SSD (see pic). Everything else was cloned fine, I've searched the internet and cannot work out what this 11.41Gb is. Is it just Dell drivers? I want to format the 1TB drive now but am afraid that I'll lose valuable info on the 11.41GB.
Any ideas?
Many thanks!

Don't buy it yet , your issue may be very much related to this thread.

Samsung 950 PRO -Series 512GB PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD 2-Inch MZ-V5P512BW  would slide in the port.
Problem is, it may not recognize the SSD as what was tried on the link.

Hi ElMeSaFeR,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Samsung 850 Pro specifications matches and should work. Since this is a third party option we just cannnot guarantee 100 % functionality. I am also not able to get any confirmed upgrade from fellow members that done it similar to this discussion.

As always advised during upgrade, when buying 3rd party parts to always check the return options just in case. The linked post would also provide you further reference about the issue.

I hope this helps answer your query.

There are some caveats to "dual booting" with Windows 7 or later, ones that could make your system inoperative (hang at BIOS screen).  Would suggest that you make a set of recovery disks before making changes as this is critical to re=install the  OEM partitions if your Dual Boot procedure fails to work and bricks out the system.

Also - I have heard that Linux Mint is the better "debian" version to use when dual booting.  I have been using Mint 17.2 for several months now and love it.  Would say to post on their forum for best answers on setting up a "dual boot" with Windows 7.

Cheers.

Hi,I recently purchased an 850 evo to put in my system instead of my optical drive. However, when I connect it it is recognised but intel's rapid storage technology says its status is incompatable. How can I fix this problem. Thank you in advance, Sebastian

Serious guru points if you can solve this one!
Windows 7, UFDs and iPod Nano were working fine. Then I cloned the Windows 7 C drive using the Samsung Data Migration tool from an 840 Pro Series 2.5-Inch 256 GB SATA 6GB/s Solid State Drive MZ-7PD256BW to an 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E500B/AM). Running Windows 7 on the new cloned 850 I can't use any type of USB storage, including different brands of UFDs, or my iPod Nano. Device status for each of these says: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" Other USB devices such as mice, keyboards, and Bluetooth adapters work fine.
I've tried everything I can find on the Internet, including the following:
Restarted the computer, maybe 50 times.
Tried updating drivers: I get "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date."
Ran Windows Update several times.
Uninstalled ALL devices under Universal Serial Bus controllers and rebooted.
Tried Microsoft Fixit troubleshooter.
Looked for but was not able to find USB lowerfilter or upperfilter entries in registry editor (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\), there are lowerfilter and upperfilter entries in other areas, including class diskdrives, the lowerfilter is SamsungRapidDiskFltr and upperfilter PartMgr, however I don't think that this is the problem since the Registry on the 840 system has the same entries. Interestingly, the registry export for the 840 Windows 7 is 607,727 KB and f... Read more

Hey guys,  I have the Lenovo Ideapad 520 (80YL00RXIN) and wanted to replace the CD Drive with the Samsung 850 Evo 250GB Solid State Drive  in order to increase the Boot Speed and over-all speed of the laptop.  So, the question is, Is the Samsung 850 Evo SSD compatible with my laptop? And will it fit in terms of size, in place of the CD Drive? Also, is it recommended to add the SSD? Any downsides to doing so?  Lastly, will I, someone who knows the basics about computers and the internal components of a computer, be able to install the SSD myself? Or would I rather outsource it to someone who deals in things like this? Thank you. Regards,Neel.

Hello all, I am planning to buy one SSD for my Lenovo Yoga 520-14IKB (80X800A2SB). Now I'm considering to buy either Samsung PM981 or SM961. 1. PM981 >  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CGCJJMV/2. SM961 > https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SM961-Polaris-256GB-M-2-22 Are both of them supported SSD for my Yoga 520? If so, which one would be better to buy considering the performance? Thank you!

For several months, I have had Samsung Magician 4.97 installed on my P70's Windows 7 and Windows 10  boot drives -- both are original Lenovo-suppled and installed 512 GB Samsung NVMe drives.  This utility offered limited functionality, simply recognizing the drives and allowing them to be benchmarked, tested and described but nothing else.  No ability to update firmware, adjust caching or over-provision the drives.  Moreover, Lenovo has previously not responded to my posted queries regarding how to update the firmware on these units, as they are out of sync -- one of the devices has a much older rev. level than the other and I dare not try to set-up a RAID array under these conditions. I was hoping the newly released Ver. 5.00 of Magician would remedy this.  However, circumstances have become worse, as the utility does not even "see" the two NVMe drives. Does anyone else have experience with 5.00 or a potential fix to the firmware update issue?  Any insights or opinions would be appreciated.

Hello, just for clarification: is the 512GB Samsung 970 Pro compatible with the Lenovo Yoga 720 15IKB? This one:https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SSD-970-PRO-512GB/dp/B07C8Y31G2/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Samsung%2BPro%2B9... Also, I pruchased the Lenovo Yoga 720 with the 512GB SSD, so I was wondering which Samsung SSD Lenovo used as the factory install, that is, did they use the Samsung 960 EVO, for example, or something? Thank you. =)

Welcome to the Community.

You can find out what you have installed by going to the properties dialog for your C: drive (Windows+E > This PC > Right click on the C: drive and choose Properties, then the Hardware tab). You can then use that information to find and compare the specs of what you have vs the 970.

I want to upgrade my Y500 (Win10, i7 3630Q, 16GB RAM, GT750 SLI) with the SSD on mSATA. After two days of struggle I managed to clone everything to SSD with Data Migration Tool from Samsung. The issue were: SSD was not recognized, BIOS did not show anything, etc. Now, I have the following issue: the laptop does not start properly with either of the disks (whether both are mounted, only HDD, only SSD). Fans are working on 100%, but the laptop is not even warm. I have to dismount the battery and unplug the laptop for at least 5 minutes and then I can start the laptop ONCE either to BIOS with OKR or to Windows with Power button. After exiting BIOS the laptop behave as I described with the fans working on 100%, after exting Windows or restarting it the effect is the same. I have not idea how to tackle the issue. The laptop has been working flawlessly for almost 6 years, no issues at all!I beg for help. Regards, tomashu
