I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I just finished building my first system. Everything works well, temps are low. System:
E6600, ASUS P5W DH Deluxe, 2 GB Kingston Hyperx, Antec Neohe 500w, Antec Solo case 120mm rear exhaust fan, 2 front 92mm fans, Sapphire x1900GT, 2 Seagate sata hard drives, Win XP Home v.2002, Kaspersky security suite. All drivers are up to date. The system can be started by clicking the usb mouse, or by turning the monitor on/off. In BIOS restart PCI, PCIe, etc are all disabled, No restart after power failure, power switch is set to on/off-hold it down for a few seconds. What am I missing? Thanks, in advance.

hi and thanks in advance. i have an HP a6152n. ive had it for about a year and yesterday my brother's (who has the same PC) PSU went out. i wanted to make sure that was the problem so i used mine to test it. when i go to put it back into my computer the pc powers on. the fans spin on the cpu the video card and on the side of the case. but the monitor shows no activity, the keyboard only flashes and mouse doesnt work. i have tried the ram test to and i got beeps out of the mother board. i also tested the swapped out the video card but so far nothing has worked. i also reset the bios to see if that would work. i even bought a new power supply (gave the old one to my brother) if any of you have any more sugestions i would really appreciate it

Have you tried a different monitor, al though you say it works on your friends you also say it's intermittent, it could simply be that the monitor is faulty and moving it cures the problem.

Hi,

Over the past few weeks, when i went to turn on my PC it would start for anywhere in between 1 and 4 seconds and then completely turn off. After a few tries though, it would stay on. But today, after many tries it doesn't stay on.

When i start it, all fans, lights, drives turn on/light up then 1-5 seconds later everything just turns off completley. It doesnt even get to the point where it makes that beep sound. I thought it might be my power supply, but i bought a brand new one only a few months ago. i've tried reseating the RAM, cleaning the motherboard area, re-connecting wires/cables but nothing is fixing it.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

If using keys at boot won't work and XP can't start then you could try using you XP installation disk to boot windows or try a linux OS on a dvd. If you still can't get it to go then try a repair install off the XP disk. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Hi JinxJack,

There should be a reset button that you press on the wireless mouse reciever, then press a small connect button on the bottom of the mouse itself to reset the connection. You might see if that will help restore your mouse.

Was there a problem why you could not let it just use the USB connection since it works with it? Just curious.

Hope this helps,

So I ordered a brand new computer, finally got it and plugged it in only to find out my monitor/keyboard/mouse wont respond. I opened the case, everything was connected right, Thinking it might be a power supply prob i put in my 500watt one and left it. Still nothing. I reconnected all wires, graphics card and even the cpu itself. Nothing happened. I took out the ram and left one in..still nothing. I dont ever hear any prompt or beep when i start it up but everything seems to be running fine inside the case..the harddrive fans and graphics fan all work. I unplugged everything but 1 stick of ram/psu/graphics and nothing. I think its a faulty mobo since my last computers monitor stopped responding and i figured the pci slot gave out or something on it. I looked at my new mobo and none of the batteries seem to be bad. Any thoughts?

Hi

When I start my PC there seems to be no communication between the computer and the monitor, and the optical mouse doesn't light up either.

In addition, the start up pauses and then starts again after about 30 seconds (ie the fans etc stop for a second or two).

Obviously because I have no monitor working I can't see what's going on.

Anyone any ideas please? Thanks for any help.

I double clicked on the title bar to restore the window and the GUIF part of the program shifted up and off the monitor. Then right clicking on the button in the task bar to maximize the window left my mouse hidden, so I click around like a Blond guy untill something gets highlighted, how frustrating is that.? Plus all the wonderfull labor saving extra menus are really nice. Do I have to reinstall Windows Media Center; Or is there some way to fix it.

THey are picking it up tomorrow morning and when I went to fire it up and prepare it - ............ nix. I KNOW I've seen the same thing before. It has to do with Windows refusing to start unless something was done to access the monitor. ???? THe PC is XP. The monitor a SAmsung Syncmaster 939 BF. The PC boots up ok to bootstrap and then stops. The monitor does not connect and gives error message to check connections. It cycles from Digital to analog then gives the cable error message. It isn't the cable. It did work fine before. Monitor tests itself as ok. The cable used is the original. I remember the answer being head-smacking simple ....... once I found it before . :-}

Alright well just today has my monitor stopped working. I was fiddling around with settings because i have two monitors hooked up to my computer and i wanted to switch their position. so i just did that, which i've done before, and then hit apply. then everything stopped working. the monitors went into standby with the computer still on and running. when i start up my computer it shows the little windows logo and everything booting up, then when it gets to the part where it actually loads my computer and my acount, the monitors shut off into standby. so then i restart in safe mode, and the monitors work fine. but i cant live my life in safe mode...i like to live on the edge. i tried stopping all my start up program through win patrol so it was practically the same thing as safe mode. but to no avail.

Work through the steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start
which try everything possible to start the OS, leading up to if necessary rescuiing your files to run Dell Windows 7 PC Restore or do the superior Clean Reinstall Windows 7

If this is the Dell in your specs then there is a built in Dell Hardware Diagnostics from F12 Menu to test your hardware first. If necessary to reinstall and not run Recovery, be sure to save the Dell Utilitiy partition to keep these bootable diagnostics.

Hi.I hope everyone reading this is having a better start to their day than me. My Toshiba laptop (satellite L850-166) has stopped working and i know nothing about computers. After an hour looking on the net for a solution i am even more confused, so any help offered will have to be in noob language please.
So here goes.
I was watching a youtube video and my computer froze.

I left it for a bit to see if it would sort itself but it didnt.

I tried to start the task manager but that wouldnt open.

I then held the power button down and shut the computer down.

When i restarted the computer it showed the Toshiba screen (as usual) giving me the F2 and F12 options for setup and boot menu.

It then went to a screen saying windows was loading files (not seen this screen before) the progress bar underneath the message then filled up.

After about 30 seconds a new screen showed with a coloured progress bar with  microsoft corporation  written underneath. This bar only filled to a quarter then the screen went black. There is a mouse cursor on the screen that i have control of.

I have left it for half an hour and nothing changes. I have also tried to start the computer a few times but its the same every time.

If anyone knows what my problem is or can offer advice on it i would be most grateful. We have some family photos on the computer and i need to get them
Also Minecraft is calling and all my saves are on the computer.

Hi, can you get it to boot into safe mode?
To do so, from start up keep tapping the F8 key, that should give you the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the up and down keys to highlight Safe mode, or safe mode with networking, then press the Enter key. If it boots into safe mode, or not, let us know, whoever comes next will help further.

My parents pc is meant to bring the monitor out of stand by when it powers on, but since the other day it hasnt. I took the side off the other day meaning to test some components with it but didnt bother testing them so put side back on, and since then this problem has occoured.

I have tried the monitor with 2 laptops and they both work, powering it on out of standby when they start. Monitor has been a bit dodgy for a while now, it would have the screen tinted a red or blue/green colour (its just old I'm guessing, doesn't seem to be a loose connection) and it would be ok if you de-gaussed it a few times until you got the right colour, so its not perfect but it does work

I have tried 2 different motherboards in the PC, and 2 different video cards, both of which have worked in this PC in the past, its always the same.

If the monitor is on, but not connected to anything it will turn on and give a message on the screen "no signal, etc" but as soon as it's connected whether the pc is on or not it will go to standby.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi

ive been looking all over the internet for a solution to my problem...

basicaly my screen wont turn on when my computer turns on, the light just flashs like it does when the computer is not on and the screen is turned on...

my problems started when for some reason my system kept locking up while playing WOW (world of warcraft) after a while i suspected a heat problem and saw in the Nvidia console my idle heat temp was over 90 degrees c and sky rocketed on a game! until the comp locked up and was forced to shut off the comp...

i had not touched or changed anything inside my comp before this after reading a few forums i concluded that posibly re applying thermal gel to the GPU could solve the issue... well it did idle temp receeded back to 60 degrees i was happy lol, then a week later it took a while to start up my comp i had to power up my comp a few times for the screen to come on, and now it wont turn on at all , the fans on the card all work it just seemslike the card is dead apart from that cos the monitor is not picking up a thing, ive tried another monitor same problem...

it is a dell computer ive had since 2005 Q1, XP SP2, 6800 GeForce GTO card and i cannot get into bios since the screen does does not come on at all, it might also be worth mentioning that although the screen does come on the computer does seem to load up to the xp login screen i think

Thank You

Hi I made a thread yesterday regarding a minor PC problem I had while trying to install windows XP on my uncles PC the problem was solved thankfully.

I now have an even bigger problem of my own with my PC.
I turned my PC on in the evening and the monitor screen was blank and displayed a blinking orange light, the fan does come on. I doubled checked the wires to see if any were loose but everything is inserted correctly.

What’s weird is the PC that I was installing windows on yesterday was doing the same thing but once you turn it off and turn it back on it would be fine and load windows.
But my one is not even doing that, there is nothing wrong with the monitor has I have brought it recently and I also checked the PC using my brother’s monitor and the same thing happens.

Once I finished installing windows on my uncles PC I turned my PC on and watched highlights of a soccer game so it actually was working last night. But I have no clue as to what has happened?
Can someone please help me?

So I turn my computer off one day only to find it wont start the next day. I open the case up and see the led is on. I flip the switch on the power supply off then on and quickly press the power button. My computer starts but the following time I shut down the computer it again wont start and now the led is blinking. I've never had any issues like this before, any help would be appreciated.

I don't routinely use many usb devices, only my mouse and keyboard and every now and then my ipod. I figure the issue is likely either the power supply or the motherboard. The ps is almost two years old while the motherboard is only about three months old.

A:Computer wont start, power supply wont start, blinking led

It sounds to me like your PSU is the problem, get a hold of another and plug it to your computer and see if that will make it start, if it doesn't it might be BOTH your motherboard and PSU. A bad PSU will burn a motherboard.

Hi,
I've got a strange but probably stupidly simple problem with an old all in one desktop I am playing around with a the moment.
After it is shut down every time I touch the mouse he computer powers up and starts which is a bit of a pain when dusting etc.
I think it may be as simple as some check box that has been clicked but I don't know.
It is running windows XP Pro SP2.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

In the bios, probablly under the APM (advanced pwer management) screen You will find something called "Wake on mouse". Disable it.

Help,

having to use the works computer to post this. My home pc is failing to startup.

Before it had gotten this bad, I had experienced crashes and reboots whilst it was working. They became more frequent and now the computer wont start at all. The power comes on, the fans all whirr, but the computer doesnt even get to the point where it displays the introductory bios screen.

Any advice?

Computer is a little old now. Intel 2600k inside.

Hello leicestersq,

Please provide information about your computer, this includes is it a notebook or desktop, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) if a custom build post the brand and model name or number for the MB, the RAM (including the amount) add on video card if one is used and the PSU (power supply unit) providing these details will enable us to better assist you.

The mouse middle button/scroller could be program in the control panel to have different functions such as going back, returning to desktop , etc.

However, when I shut my computer and started the next day, it loses that functionality. Is the function in the tempory folder and it deletes it when I start again?
any help will be appreciated. TIA

I have an IBM thinkpad first off. Something happened with my bios getting corrupted or something so i had to use the IBMs pcdocter and format and restore factory defaults because i kept getting a blue screen after windows tried to load.

Anyways it restored with windows xp pro SP1 (i have updated to SP3 through windows update). I originally had windows xp SP3 before formatting.

The mouse didnt work when i started up the computer, even when i updated to SP 3, so i just went to device manager to check things out, and there were a bunch of unknown devices and missing drivers, i just clicked update on all of them and it found them all so thats fine.

When my computer loads up, and is on the IBM screen or if i open up the IBM panel, the mouse works. So i know its not the usb or the mouse. But once it gets past that to loading windows, the mouse stays lit up but it doesnt work anymore.

When i put it in the usb now it shows up as an unknown device, i try to update the driver and all it does is move it under Mouse and other pointers on the device manager. When i try to update it from there or reinstall it, it searches for "Mouse" and it gets to a point where its loading something and says USB scroll mouse "c:\windows\system32\drivers", when it finishes (takes like 3 seconds) it comes up saying:

There was a problem installing this hardware.

A:Mouse fails after windows starts

maybe the mouse is not compatible with your current service pack and when you formatted your drive it would have removed programs that run and make your cpu and commit charge higher therefore making the figures lower with the lack of programs running due to formatting.

I have an HP Pavilion Notebook running XP Home SP2. It boots ok and windows starts ok to the desktop but then both the mouse and keyboard are dead. I've tried booting from the OS disk and the keyboard works fine using the recovery console. I've tried a safe boot, last good config option, a usb mouse and I have an HP docking station for this notebook using an Ir mouse and keyboard and they won't work either. I've read other similar posts here but no help from those solutions. If I have to reload the OS, I could use help on saving the data. Can you tell me what the default mouse and keyboard driver filenames are and the command line to expand them from the OS recovery disk? Any Suggestions?

On occasion my computer after being shut off will have issues starting back up. The computer itself seems to start well enough with lights and fans starting up but neither monitor, keyboard, or mouse is functional with the mouse and keyboard appearing appearing to not be getting any power. I've tried plugging the computer into another outlet or using another power strip and while both of those worked sometimes the issue appears again later. I'm wondering now if this is a battery issue or something wrong with the motherboard?

Once the computer has started it runs without issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Computer Starts but monitors, keyboard, and mouse don't

You are posting in a hardware forum and no one [other than you] has any idea what hardware you are running. Post ALL of your exact system specs; this will help with some of the specs.

Run that and post the output here.

Hi all

I'm probably being thick and really would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I currently have Windows XP SP3 installed on drive C
Drive D is empty - Used to have Windows XP
Drive E is my data drive.

I put the Windows 7 64 Bit DVD in, it boots up and states loading files, then I see the coloured dots make the Microsoft window, then a blue screen with coloured lines and what looks like leaves. The mouse works, but that's where it all stops. I don't see anything else. Do I need to do anything special at this stage to proceed?

What I want to do.
I want to install Windows Ultimate onto Drive D but keep my Windows XP install as Dual Boot for now. I imagine, the CD would give me options to install like XP used to on drive of my choice, format my D drive and install.

My PC
Pentium Dual Core E5300 @ 2.60GHZ
NVIDEA GeForce 8600 GT 512Mb graphics card
Gigabyte G31M-ES2L motherboard

I could not tell you which ones but 1 of my hard drives is SATA and the other two
are the old connection. They are all 80Gig. I think the set up is like this.

Hard Drive 1 SATA - Master, DVD SATA - Slave
Hard Drive 2 Old Connection, Hard Drive 3 - Slave

Really appreciate if someone can help me out on what I am doing wrong.

A:Windows 7 Installation, Starts then nothing but mouse & screen

With only 2gb of ram, you would be better installing 32 bit.

Were working fine yesterday. Today I return home and find computer had mysteriously turned itself on. Mouse not working but keyboard allows me to try to shut down. Taking very long time so shut down with power button.

Now my keyboard and mouse both do not work on Windows login screen. Same for safe mode. Before this, in BIOS, other screens can get to by holding down keys as computer starts, keyboard works.

As Windows loads, can see keyboard illumination switches off. Same for mouse laser. My other USB peripherals (extra HD and wireless thingy) still have lights on. Fairly new computer. Cost me ?300 new about 6 months ago.

I tried to 'roll back' Windows - there was only one option - for when I installed Itunes maybe a week ago, but that failed.

I chacked inside and outside the case to see if there's any sockets for PS/2 keyboards, but there aren't any.

Any idea what's going on? Thanks for any help.

A:USB keyboard and mouse do not work once Windows starts

If you can not open the BIOS screen with USB keyboard, use a PS/2 keyboard for the setting.

Open the BIOS screen and enable Legacy support for USB keyboard and mouse. This should do the trick.
