Computer res changing to 640x480, text size huge

Q: Computer res changing to 640x480, text size huge

Hey guys,

As the subject says the text size is huge in windows, regardless of windows prefs or teh View -> Text Size option... they're huge and barely readable... just a lot of other problems. Removed a few entries from regedit & msconfig, there were two listings found that looked like a lot of squares and o's as the name, the path was in HLCU/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT or something like that... I removed them as well.

Microsoft Antispyware didn't find anything which I found odd, but she ran AdAware occasionally so that is good... here's the log:

Preferred Solution: Computer res changing to 640x480, text size huge

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I don't know how much this will help but I see you have a nVidia graphics card. Have you tried updating the drivers to the card? If you did is that when the trouble started? If so try getting a different driiver for the card.

For some odd reason, my text size on webpages keeps changing from med to large. I am not doing anything but going from page to page. I will set the text size to med, then all of a sudden I will pull up a page and the setting will be at large. My hijack this registry is clean. Any help would be great. It is not hard to change it back to med when I need to, but is getting annoying.

Windows 7 64-bit
I can adjust the display so it's large enough to read everything but the text. For instance, now have it set at 150% of normal and the title of this post is large but what I'm typing now is so small it's barely readable. MUCH smaller than 10-point.

There is a way to customize the display, but anything more than 150% is so large it overflows my wide-screen monitor. Surely there must be a choice between way too large and way too small, but I can't find it.

A message on my screen now says to run TSG Sysinfo, for information helpful in solving this problem. Last time I downloaded something similar, here, I ended up with a $40 Uniblue program on my computer that I had to fight like crazy to stop invading my world. I never got my money back, either. It would help to know what "TSG Sysinfo" is, before I commit to running it.

Thanks,
Bahb

Hey all, sometimes when I enter the TSG site my text size changes. One minute the text is the size I have it set to and then when I go to a different thread it will get larger. At times if I hit the refresh button it goes back to the right size and sometimes it doesnt. I ran ccleaner but it does not make any difference. I have tried firefox(3.6) in safe mode but no difference there. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this also. It is only the TSG site that this happens on.

Hi chaosbreaker

I placed the font size button on the toolbar which makes it easier than using View>TextSize>Size.

As to why the font changes sizes every so often...I don't have a better answer except maybe it depends on the phase of the moon.

Have you tried pressing the Shift key while exiting the last browser to retain your settings?

A very non-computer savvy woman asked why the text size changes (sometimes to large or very large and sometimes to small or very small) while she is typing on her netbook with XP. She says it happens in both her browser (Chrome) and her word processor (MS Works). She also is running Google Desktop. I did not see any utitlities or other unusual software. She says it is random but she thinks she might be brushing against the touchpad when it happens. Any guesses what she is doing? (She was going to try to show me but her battery died.)

If the touch pad is setup with a Scroll Zone, pressing CTRL+ScrollZone is same as CTRL+Wheel on the mouse, and will change text size in many applications. If they use keyboard shortcuts a lot like CTRL+C and CTRL+V that might explain it. You can disable the scroll zones in Control Panel | Mouse/Touchpad to see if that stops it.

I'll start out here by stating a problem I finally solved and then my question:

For months now I've been fighting that my hardware cursor disappears in World of Warcraft on my home theater system and time I switch modes to full screen and sometimes even in windowed mode and the reason for this is apparently due to me setting my display text size to 150% or 125%. I did find via some searching WoW customer service forums that if I set it back to 100% (default) OR 149% customized, my hardware cursor works again. I'm going to leave it at 149% because I really do need the larger text size on my HDTV and using 149%, I don't have to change back to normal, log out, log in, then start my game.

I'm glad I found this solution - but my question is, WHY is this an issue on Windows 7? Why does 149% work??

I did some searching and couldn't find any reports of this on XP - and as far as I can remember it only started happening to me when I upgraded my XP to Win7. I'm hoping Microsoft recognizes this as a bug and will fix it someday.

Thanks in advance!

A:Game "hardware cursor" disappears after changing text size

This has to do with DPI scaling. Technically, when you change DPI different images should be used (higher DPI - higher quality image).
150% probably is that border where image should be changed. Likely, in your case that image is missing or somewhat corrupt (or might be a Blizzard's bug).

But Microsoft knows about problems with scaling. In Windows 8 Dev. Preview, at least in Metro part of it, scaling is done in a different way.

I am trying to use a Knoppix CD to access my files locked on my computer during a NTFS-related error. I have downloaded an ISO and I have burned the CD successfully and Knoppix loads like a dream.

However, Knoppix's default font is so huge that I can't navigate the system. I'm a moderate computer nerd; though I am brand-new to Knoppix, I could easily and confidently follow the instructions I have if only I could read the words on the Knoppix screen!

Can anyone offer any easily-understood, step-by-step directions for how to shrink the text size? I have been Googling forever, but I haven't come up with anything I can understand.

You can move your mouse to the edge of the screen and reduce and enlarge the screen size.
I got this from here, and I don't use knoppix. But I couldn't find anything on Text or font enlargement

hello

i have a LG laptop, using winVista Home. my video card is intel 945GM express chipset family.

i want to connect the laptop to my tv, so that i can watch movies thorugh the laptop.

i've got a RGB connection on my tv, so i tried to connect the alptop to the tv using a RGB cable.

the problem is that i need to change the screen resolution on the laptop to 640X480, but i dont have such resolution in display properties in the laptop (the lowest resolution is 600X800).

is there any tweak or something to make the video card work at 640X480?
or anything else that i can do?

A:Changing Screen Resolution to 640X480 (vista home)

I used msconfig to force vista to boot into 640x480. start->run (<windows>+R if it's hidden) "msconfig" <enter>. Choose the boot tab and check the checkbox for Base video which is more or less half way across and 3/4 of the way down the form. Then Apply/Ok and restart.

You may want to add a new boot entry via the help of EAsyBCD or similar and then tick "Make all boot settings permenant" for in addition to the above so 640x480 can be selected at boot with ease. albeit with a slightly increased start up time due to the count-down associated with multiple entries into your BCD file.

Good morning,

I am running IE11 on Windows 7 Pro. I had my text size set at 125% for several months and about a week ago it suddenly changed back to 100%.

I have tried resetting it back to 125% by going to the Control Panel and then Adjusting the Screen Resolution which had worked previously when I originally put it to 125%. But now it doesn't hold it at 125% anymore. Once I shut down and restart my text is back to 100%.

Any ideas for this elderly 'brain-housing group'?

Thanks and regards,

Windows 10.

I am having much fun grappling with my displays. I say grapple because I CANNOT see the text!

I have a laptop, with a display that has up to 2048x resolution and an external monitor that does 1920x. I have tried to keep both set the same resolution so the mouse will easily go back and fort.

If I bump one setting, others seem to change. Like after an update too!

I need a script, to set, then set again, and again, the
display settings,
the custom scaling level, and
the "change only text size".

Keeping the monitor placement geometry the same would be great for me too.

Oh for a cross reference on Outlook 2013 to the system setting. I keep manipulating the view settings there too.

Probably to get started I could use a "settings display" script.

Help, please

A:How to re-size the explorer search box. - Large text size.

Hi,
According to my experience, high-DPI can cause strange behavior include toolbars, icons, and control buttons, though the link I shared with you previously doesn't include the issue about ratio between address box and search box, the symptom
is somewhat similiar to that.
I recommend that we turn on Windows update, and wait for an update which might address this issue, or as you mentioned, turn to a lower dpi as a temporarily workaround.

Hello sevenforums! I have a problem with my computer i recently purchased. Here is my story.

This all started whenever I wanted to change my text size different by changing my DPI settings. What I did was right click, go to screen resolution, and clicked on "Make text and other items larger or smaller". From this I changed it to 100% from 125%. I noticed it had changed my font size to the 100%. It then made everything SUPER small when I changed my theme settings.

Whenever I right click and go into personalization settings, I do the usual customizing to my likings. Since I want to save the theme, I do so by naming it, blah. Now I want to use the blah theme by click on it, and I do so. Everything is fine and dandy until I right click my desktop to refresh(out of habit). This is the before and after of the font sizes.
Before
After

My workaround was to set a custom DPI setting, log off like it prompts me to, then changing it back to 100%, again prompting to do so. It is so annoying to do so.

Help me! It is driving me crazy and I have no idea how to fix it. I cannot save a theme and change to it, otherwise it results in the small font. It affects all the fonts soon afterwards. Like google chrome will be fine until i exit and restart the program. Then a super small font follows.

I'm computer-illiterate...sorta.

My C drive all of a sudden has become overloaded (if that makes sense) and I was trying to figure out why, all of a sudden, this occurred.

When looking through the Windows Files, I came across the largest file, winsxs, which claims to have been created on 3-11-08. I've had this computer, with Vista, for over a year. I never had the overloaded drive issue so I never took the time to look around to see what files and stuff were in the Windows Folder.

i do not remember downloading anything new from Windows (other than automatic updates).

Is this something new and do I have to keep it around?

My winsxs folder is currently 4.12GB. I read on another discussion somewhere that as more programs are added to the computer, it can grow even more. Is this true as well?

How do I reset this and what is the origin of this problem? (It's not merely a font issue.) Many thanks for any help.

When i use IE the text on webpages is humongus! My homepage, Bellsouth has white background instead of the usual Blue /Yellow colors. As matter of fact this forum background is white, used to be green.

What is strange is when I use Mozzilla Firefox for alternate browser, the text and color is fine.

On IE bar under "view" I have text set at small. On my desktop display I also have text and color set appropriately. It wouldn't be so bad to read the big text...but when I print something it takes 3 or 4 pages verses the usual one page.

I tried to update video driver in Windows, but said didn't need it. I Googled VIA/s3G UNICHROME Igp and was unable to make sense out of downloading a current driver from their home site.

Seems like this began after I changed ISP to Bellsouth DSL. Any suggestions?

Hi kittifaye

With one window open for Internet Explorer,
Tools > Internet Options > Colors button
Select: Use Windows Colors
OK, Apply, OK to save and close.

Hold the CTRL key down while moving the wheel on the mouse back and forth until the text size is what you want.

Close the Internet Explorer window, then reopen.

My problem is that when I right click on the C drive there is about 5GB free, but when I select all the folders from the inside of C drive, it says that there are only about 75GB used.

So please tell me what to do, or what's the issue with this huge difference.

In trying to attach my computer to my HDTV last night I wound up playing with the default font sizes of WinXP. I moved them from 100% (96dpi) all the way up to 500%.... which was fine during that session of Winxp, but once I rebooted once I can hardly see anything on the screen outside of a few words at a time.

I would just go back into Display Properties>>>Settingg>>>Advanced and reset to default, but I can only fit basically the top 20% of the Display Properties box on the screen. Thus, I can click the Settings Tab, but then cant move down far enough to reach the advanced button at the bottom of the box and click ok to move on to the next box.

Can anyone help a poor fella out here on how I can do this?

Thanx!

Hello Friends, This query is concerning how Win 7 Ultimate Scheduled Backup works.
These are my needs:
Often in the past, Win7 has become unstable in some way, such that different pgms including Windows Explorer, and other system tools become corrupt. I decide to re-install Win 7 Ultimate 32bit.

I have an external 500Gb drive with an Acronis True Image Home 2009 full partition backup on it. The backup is a fully updated, fully game installed backup, and is way faster to use compared to the individual software installations. Since win7 starts acting up about every 3-6 months for me, I replace it. But:

Recently (last restore) I decided to let win Backup and Restore do a scheduled backup every 7 days. I let Win choose what to backup. I intend to let Win be THE backup to use to replace the OS when needed. I have always had problems running out of space where to let Win Backup to on some drives, so I dedicated a 443Gb partition to Backup only. This is on the other half of a 1Tb drive. (I know in some cases it is not wise to use the same drive, but I put all the important things on another physical drive) I have 4 drives, totaling about 3.8Tb. 2 have XP Pro, and 2 have Win7 Ultimate. The main C: is 487Gb, with 231Gb used space. The other half of it is N: 443Gb; on which the Backup is written to each week. The size of the backup is now 407.12Gb. The backup on N: is approaching TWICE the size of the used space on the C: drive! And within about a month there will be... Read more

A:Win 7 Ultimate scheduled Restore size is getting huge!

A few points:

You can assume that any image of a corrupt Windows installation is itself corrupt.

Likewise for an image of a malware-infected Windows.

You might find that backup programs such as Macrium and Acronis are more flexible and understandable.

Macrium images are roughly half the size of the occupied space on the partitions contained in the image. For instance--if you have a 400 GB partition with 300 occupied, the image would be roughly 150 using standard compression. Smaller if you choose a higher compression level.

You can extract individual files from Macrium images. I don't know if this can be done with Windows imaging.

I think the Windows backup tool has its own notion of what must be included in an image--and you have little control over that. That might explain the size of your images. Other imaging programs give you more control.

Lastly--if you are having continual corruption issues, I'd guess you either have hardware issues or are doing something wrong. That isn't the standard experience with Windows 7.

The only way to have an uncorrupted image backup would be to begin with an uncorrupted Windows installation---that might require a clean install in your case.

I don't know what to do and this is causing me problems with performance and soon will occupy all the partition.

Ran Ccleaner.
Deleted all files in Temp folder.

And the 48 gig is just the windows folder itself, there's still all the programs that installs with windows i.e sky drive etc..

I realize with windows 8 you've got the new start screen with all the apps and crap which I don't use, anyway to rid of them to save room ? am I missing something obvious here to make space ?

Today I tried to return my font to it's original size (large) and I don't get the option to "apply" the changes. I went into control panel--personalization---adjust font size. I choose 120 DPI but it doesn't give me the option to apply because the font is too big and that option isn't even visible as I'm sure it's below my toolbar at the bottom.

I called microsoft and after him taking control of my computer and searching around for a good 20 minutes he told me that I would have to pay $80 to fix this problem, optimize performance, yada, yada, yada.

I've googled how to do it with no luck. I even tried youtube and no luck. So as of right now up a creek without a paddle.

I am attaching a picture of what my screen shoes on the "adjust font" page. There is nothing below the writing that you see i.e. an apply tab since the font is too big.

As the title says.

I'm a fairly advanced computer/hardware user. Advanced enough to get myself into a whole lot of trouble if I'm not careful LOL. This is a first for me. I'm trying to build a quad-boot machine (don't ask) (W8.1/XP - HDD-0 & W7/CentOS HDD-2) Putting 8.1 & XP on HDD-0 was easy enough and straight forward.

I then threw an old 80gb WD raptor drive in and put W7x64 SP1 on it yesterday. Did my updates, etc. I assumed that the 80GB drive could be partitioned down to 2x 40GB and I could throw CentOS on the Partition2 of HDD2 easily... Except when I went into W7 this morning (Computer Management) to shrink down the volume I'm seeing something funky.

When I go to folder options and "view hidden folders and files" then open up C drive and Ctrl+A, Right click and choose properties I get:

and

So what's going on... or what am I missing???

I know the easy solution would be to format the drive, partition first and then install W7 and CentOS onto each partition - but I am curious and can't let this go...

Thanks for any help - I just want to find where and what the data is on the drive that's hidden somewhere. It's just the bare OS, I've gone into Add/Remove Windows Components and removed pretty much everything I can that I don't need so it would be a very stripped down bare OS...

Thanks

A:W7x64 SP1 PRO OS size/footprint is huge (hidden files/data)

UPDATE:

It did it again...

From the Microsoft website - System Requirements:

Windows 7 system requirements - Microsoft Windows

•16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

I formatted the whole 80gb (74 usable) drive into two 37.2GB partitions. I installed W7x64 onto the 37.2GB partition and it's now showing 455mb free and 36.8GB used - I've never paid attention to this before however I do a bunch of VM deployments on 16, 24 or 32GB HDD's and have never had this issue before.

All I want to know is where the hidden files are so I can clean them out.

Thanks for any help.

Hello all. I am having a tremendous problem trying to make DVD backup files, a procedure about which I am nearly totally ignorant. After having numerous DVDs stepped on, scratched, delaminated, etc, I heard from my more computer savvy neighbor that it is possible to back them up. However, my computer only had a DVD rom CD RW drive and I do not have much money (disabled veteran). He suggested bitripper as it is freeware and can make avi files that can be played from the computer or fit onto CDs. I tried it but the first file was 36G big. After some internet research I got an additional "codec" and loaded that, and the file sizes using that option inside of bitripper did come out between 650 and 700 MB, however, I had trouble with "choppiness" (bad tracking?) in half of them. I tried other codecs on my neighbors rec as well.

The drive on the old computer failed, but I have received a new one from friends and have tried to resume making backups. I loaded the same codecs and bitripper but every file I make is either at least twice the size set in the configuration (using uncompressed audio), or the correct size but completely desynched (my new word of the month, found on another net search for mismatching audio and video) using LAME audio codec. Some more research yielded the information that others had had trouble with desynching using bitripper option "LAME" audio codec that cleared up when they swicthed to "Fraunhoffer" audio codec; and... This comes under our rules of contravening copy protection so I am closing this

Circumventing Copy Protection - While we believe it's reasonable to make backup copies of CDs and DVDs that you own, a lot of people break copy protection for the wrong reasons. The law is still vague, at best, as to if it is legal to break copy protection in order to make such a backup, even for personal use. (The DMCA, for example, seems to make it illegal.) As a result, we do not allow discussion of how to break copy protection at this time. I've been working on a thorough system cleanup in an attempt to get my hard drive usage down to a minimum. The Windows folder (C: Windows) has been by biggest obstacle. I couldn't believe it was taking up 22GB of space even after running both CCleaner and Windows Disk Cleanup. I've been reading and researching all night, both on this forum and elsewhere and the answer appears to be that "winsxs" (inside the Windows folder and now at 11GB on my system) is designed to continue growing endlessly as it adds more dll files every time you install a program and it never deletes the files even after you've uninstalled the program. This explains why I see reports of people's Windows folder ranging from 10MB to 34MB. Wow, I remember just a couple years ago when WindowsXP, all my programs, documents, photos and audio files only took up 20 to 25GB.

I'm not inclined to be a complainer or criticize people who have built an entire operating system when I still struggle to point, click and make a program work. I'm thoroughly impressed with people who can design, program and create such an impressive and infinitely complex object as an operating system. Nevertheless, it does strike my simplistic, common sense mind as being a bit regressive to go from an OS (XP) that takes up 7GB on my old system to one (7) that takes up 22GB on my new system - and all to run pretty much the same software and do pretty much the same things, at least from a users point of view.

I have a Dell XPS 13 9360. I connect it to an external monitor (HP LE1901w) through a Dell DA100 adapter. I use Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and as a driver for the adapter I use the latest given by DisplayLink.
If I want to use both monitors (the built-in display and the external one at the same time, the latter with VGA connection) I get problems with the size of the windows.
Just for information, for the built-in monitor I use a rescaling of 2, and I really need to do that otherwise it would be impossible for me to read it.
I figured out that, going into System settings-Monitor, one has necessarily to choose one option for  "rescale the contents of the window to match:" and then one has to choose between the monitor with smallest or biggest controls. Both choices are bad for me, because either the external monitor gets windows too big or the built-in montior gets windows too small.
How to fix that?

Hi everyone.

I recently acquired a fairly old computer and reformatted it, putting windows ME on it. The computer is a Pentium 2 350 MMX and has 64mb ram.

The problem I have is that I can't get better screen definition than 640x480.

I went into Device Manager and it listed the graphics card as a RAGE PRO TURBO AGP so I downloaded and installed the driver for that. I still couldn't change the screen definition, and was getting a yellow exclamation mark by it in device manager.

I then took the case off. Removing the Graphics Card revealed that it wasn't a rage pro after all, so I had downloaded the wrong driver. The actual Graphics Card is a Maxi Gamer Phoenix card. I uninstalled the Rage Pro driver and downloaded the driver for the Maxi Gamer Phoenix card, the dgp-9x-304 driver.

Upon trying to install the new driver, it stops responding around halfway through the installation and will not install properly. In addition I have also downloaded a folder of drivers banshee.zip and unzipped that. As the installation won't complete I have tried to browse for a driver in the relevent folders but it isn't recognising any correct drivers there.

In addition to this, under display properties there are TWO monitors listed:

While in the Screen Resolutions settings, click Advanced Settings > go to the Monitor Tab
Make sure the box "Hide modes that the monitor cannot display" is checked.
