[SOLVED] WinXP SP3; IPC error, Shutdown Issues and Taskbar Color issues

Q: [SOLVED] WinXP SP3; IPC error, Shutdown Issues and Taskbar Color issues

Reposting from this link as advised:

Hi Experts,
I wanted to be update to get best performance and removed some services from running along with changes to MSconfig and ended up in mess.. Now Any help from you would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I have followed the attached the DD.TXT and ARk.txt and Attach Zipped as attachment for investigation.

1. When I tried to Open control Panel, I get the following error which I have to say Ok or nothing works
" IPC error: no connection. (SM_RC_ENOCONN)(11)" This dialog box appears twice before control panel displays the list. Please can some one help me resolve it.

Tried the following:
Restor to the date system was working .. But I still have these problems.

2. When I shut down, I am forced to end a strange application it says "End Program - Sample". The shut down procedure does not force this "Whatever weird thing" to close. I see from task manager that there are no Applications running.

3. Windows Task Bar changed color to grey even after restore, this problem remains

Themes services is running.
I have googled about it and run those regedit commands
regsvr32 mshtml.dll - failed saying "mshtml.dll loaded, but DLLRegisterServer entry point not found" . ..
Did I install any other OS drivers by mistake .. ? How to know ?

4. This is my own making, So while trying to resolve problem 3, I came across Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP from google and run all recommended stuff to get back my task bar, themes etc. So I have now a different problem ..

After startup, I get a winxp screen and a arrow nothing else for nearly 2 minutes before winxp gets back to live again..

Any help to resolve these annoying issues will be appreciated.

I have an older fujitsu scanner (ScanPartner 3091DC) that was in the closet for around 8 years and recently tried to use it again. Black and white scans seem ok, but when I try photo scans, the color is strange looking.

There's also some lines running through the picture. I tried cleaning the glass on the scanner.

Anyone seen this type of thing before? I'm thinking about just getting a new scanner since parts are probably more expensive than a new scanner (and i'm not sure parts are available anyway).

My computer was working fine last night until I went to shut it down, then I got some sort of UI logon error and it wouldn't turn off. So I pressed the power button until it turned off. Now my screen is all messed up. I get a pop-up that says my resolution and color depth are set too low, but when I try to readjust it it remains the same. It basically looks like a greyscaled photo negative. However, everything looks fine in safe mode. How do I fix this?

You need to reinstall the video driver for your exact model of video card or on-board adapter, whichever you use.

Hey guys,

I need to know how to get my task bar buttons back to what they were originally. This is a bit hard to explain so let me first say. This is NOT fixed by selecting Always combine or Combine in the task bar buttons pull down menu when right clicking on Properties.

Issue is:
Say I have multiple Firefox items stacked in the task bar shown as one Firefox button slightly overlapped by others, with Combine or always combine set, I see a MENU of the four browser addresses on the screen with one address below the other address in just one box, when I HOVER over the Firefox Buttons stacked in the Task bar.

I Want to be able to see Multiple small browser pages side by side across the screen each in their own separate box instead of seeing the menu when I hover over the Firefox Buttons stacked in the Task-bar.

I can get this to happen on a machine that is loaded with windows 7 by default however I have somehow changed some setting on another machine and I cant get it back.
Thanks for the assist in advance!!

After being told several times that my virtual memory has virtually run out and that windows will increase it automatically and then windows freezing, I decided to try and increase it manually. However, when I try to increase it, my changes are never saved.
At the moment my page file is 756MB, when I click on the "Change" button the "Virtual Memory" window opens. Currently the "Custom Size" radio button is checked with the "Initial Size" being 756MB and the "Maximum Size" being 1512MB. At the bottom of this window I'm being told that the recommended size is 3057MB, which seems quite high to me.
Whatever changes I make are not saved when I click "OK" and the virtual memory size is still showing as 756MB in the "Performance Options" window. Before trying this I cleared the caches as the warning balloon was appearing while streaming video from the internet.
I've recently upgraded my RAM from 1280MB to 2048MB and am running Windows XP Pro 2002 SP3. I can't see any other problems occurring.

Any help much appreciated!

Our data file server (DFS) recently went belly-up on us. It was shutting down intermittently after being turned on (20sec-10min). We determined the power supply is healthy and observed no abnormal temperatures. Diagnosis: we needed a new motherboard.

The DFS was running XP (SP unknown) with 4 HD's in a RAID configuration through a PCI-X card. Here's what we bought to replace it
New Motherboard: MSI 890FXA-GD70 with on board SATA controller
New Processor: AMD FX 3.6GHz Quad Core
New Memory: Corsair DDR3 1333 2x4GB (overkill, I know)

With the new motherboard installed, I started getting all sorts of funny error messages about hard disk problems. As far as I can tell, this is because XP is not designed for SATA.

I changed the BIOS to first boot from CD, and placed a Windows XP OS disc in the drive. After waiting through a couple minutes of the Windows installation blue screen, I again got errors about the HD's. Again, I think this is because of SATA+XP issues.

So I read all about making a slipstream disc (I'm completely new to this). I downloaded nLite, and the RAID drivers from MSI. I built the slipstream disc on a DVD-RW, making sure I had SP2 on the disc.

Now, when I start the DFS computer and insert the disc, I get the error message
"A disk read error occurred. Pres Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

I've tried starting with the SATA settings in the BIOS set to IDE, RAID, and ACHI. Each time, I get the same error message.

I've tried a... Read more

When I hit the shutdown command on the start menu the computer display powers down immediately ... and the hard drive continues to spin for a minute then it switches off (and yes the button is correctly set up via 'power options' to shutdown the computer). The normal process is that I see the closedown sequence on my screen.. or the sleep sequence if i choose that. Instead -the screen just goes black. This has never happened in 12 months of using vista (ultimate with service pack 1.. fully updated)

In effect, the result of this is that my pc isnt shutting down at all. It is as if its going to sleep, then cutting the power itself without doing a proper shutdown. Upon powering up again, the system starts up odd, with the exact windows/webpages from the previous session open and displayed as they were .. yet the internet intermittedly won't work and the system is sluggish for a good ten minutes. I can only deduce this is because of a failure of certain commands to open properly as the system wsnt shut down right.

meanwhile, the 'restart' command functions correctly

Ive got no driver conflicts, problems or anything like that. Ive installed no new software or hardware and everything was working fine until this happened out of the blue. Its possible i may have tinkered with something unwittingly with the system settings but It is definitely a problem with the shutdown of vista and I need a little help here. Hi everyone:

My task seems to be relatively simple. All I need is to connect two towers via an ethernet cable to run a small app to sync the time between two.
I tried it for two Windows XP machines and it worked fine.
Now I take the same cable and connect one XP SP2 machine to the Windows 2000 SP4 machine. On the XP side in the Network Connections I right-click on the Local Area Connection, select Properties, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then hit Properties and specify the following:
IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
Other fields remain empty.
Then on Win2K machine, I go to Control Panel -> Network and dial-up connections, then right-click Local Area Connection 2 and click Properties. Then highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then hit Properties and specify the following:
IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
Other fields remain empty.
Both network connections look enabled and the status shows as they are working, but somehow two computers cannot communicate via TCP/IP.
I also disabled all the firewalls (by manually ripping out Norton Antivirus out of the Registry start-up using msconfig) but still nothing happens.
When I go to Network Connections in Windows XP, it does something for about 10 seconds and then pops out the following message:
"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Hi all, thank you for taking the time to help me with this issue I am having. I am thinking it could be that my Acer Aspire 5630 is not compatible with Windows 8 although I did check with the Microsoft upgrade assistant. It did say secure-boot was not compatible with my laptop but I am not sure if that is automatically disabled or not.

I recently installed IE7, and I'm not sure if this is the cause of my problem, but ever since right around then, sometimes when I right click on my Google Talk icon in the right side of the taskbar, the Gtalk menu will pop up as always, but the taskbar menu (which says "Lock the taskbar", etc.) will pop up over it, so I can't access, say, the "Check mail now" command. This doesn't always happen, maybe 25-50% of the time. In addition to that, my Microsoft Excel Help will crash sometimes when I try to open up a help window in it, and sometimes when I open Winamp and am navigating through my music library, right around when I try to play some songs, Winamp will crash. I'm not sure if any of these issues are related, but they are all problems that happen between 25% and 50% of the time, and all started recently, around the time I installed IE 7. Thanks!

Hello all,

I currently have a Dell computer given to me by my old employer that is running into validation/registry issues. The computer is now at my new employer since it was faster than what they originally had for me. I am assuming the computer originally had a KMS activated copy of Windows 7 Enterprise but I can't be sure. I first noticed issued awhile ago when a dialogue box saying something on the lines of I could be a victim of software piracy or something. I just closed it out and didn't pay much attention to it.

I then tried to download Microsoft Visual C++ as a program requested that I do so and I got the 0x80070005 - Access is denied error. I've researched and a bit and even bought a new copy (with CD) of Windows 7 Pro. I was a fool and thought I could just plug in the new key and it would be fine. I've tried the whole SubInACL deal and got errors so I'm not sure what I should do next.

I could do a fresh install but 1. This is now my primary work computer so I don't want to lose anything. I am somewhat scared of doing a fresh install, a restore, etc. I honestly don't know the difference all that well.

I also forgot to mention I have the original CoA and I will give that information now:
Windows 7 Pro OA

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

About a month ago my hard drive froze up and I replaced it with a Western Digital Caviar Black 500 gb Sata drive. I used an external USB hard drive enclosure to remove files etc, the old hard drive still worked, just wouldn't boot the OS. Well since then I had problems with boot up. At first it was just that restart wouldn't work out of Windows XP. The motherboard would beep, display it's identity and stop. Sometimes it would stop after detecting the CPU and the memory but not continue on to even look for the Hard drive or anyother bootable device. Now it takes two, three, sometimes four tries to get it to proceed to detect the hard drives and occasionally freezes on the Welcome screen to XP. When I check the event viewer it seems to get into loops of security checks, running the same one over and over. The last time I checked the System events, it showed none prior to the current boot up. I am also getting hard drive errors. No bad sectors, just corrupted files and messed up index entries.

I'm pretty happy with my de-Metro'd Win8.1 laptop now. But one nagging issue left is color schemes. Specifically, in windows (mail/chrome/vim, not Microsoft) my scroll bar is light blue on a white background. Sometimes, I'm not sure why, it goes to very light blue on a white background.

What's annoying is my very light blue on a white background tends to happen 100% on google maps, where the background is very light blue, and the streets are white. In other words, I have a screen of white with street names and no idea where the actual streets are.

I found a website that gave me registry entries to change, but randomly changing random numbers to other random numbers got old fast. I could see the effect each change made, but had no clue as to what each color entry mapped to.

My question is simple. In a window with a scrollbar, how to I ensure the scrollbar stands out, as opposed to hiding in the background. I want my scrollbar to be obvious, something to grab on to, a source of strength. Not some shrinking violet, thinking "please don't find me" with all it's RGB might.

Not a Win8.1 hater, I actually like the OS. I hate Metro with a passion, but I've pretty much figured out how to avoid Metro altogether.

Ok, how do I word this. So earlier today I was using this laptop (hp windows xp 04) and not really doing anything that would cause a virus or anything but just surfing the internet as I usually do. All of a sudden the screen freezes as it sometimes does. When I restarted the computer, there was (and still is) a grey transparent line about an inch thick going down the left side of the screen about an inch out from the side. Also the color of everything on the display is really saturated. So I tried restarting it and that did not work. I tried even taking the battery out and restarting it that way. That did not work. I messed around with the display to see if maybe it had something to do with that and I couldn't find anything. So I went to add / remove programs and went through all the programs and came across one program I didn't recognize. It was called "Uninstall ESS Modem." That didn't sound very good to me, so I'm pretty sure that has something to do with the problem. I was wanting to know if there was a way to fix it.

I've just installed C&C First decade on my new computer. I have Vista32bit and the graphic card is NVIDIA GeForce 8300 GS.
It installs fine but when I run it the colors are all screwed up. I've tried changing the settings of the game to run in compability mode XP and also in Windowa 98/Windows ME but it still won't work.

Any good ideas are appreciated!

I used to have windows 95 running on my comp. I have a very crappy monitor and it tends to be too dark and too blue most of the time. When I got the comp, it was from my friend, who'd reformatted before giving it to me. I had to manually adjust the colors, through the display settings. The little box with the picture of the girl, and you move the sliders around till the color is right.
Well about 2 years ago I got it reformatted again, this time with Win98. And that option seems to not exist anymore. I go to Display>Settings>Advanced but there's only the color profiles box. I had thought maybe this was just how win98 was, until I was messing with my friends comp, running win98 also, and found the option on hers.

I've tried to figure out why hers has it and mine doesn't and I'm stumped. I've also posted about this before but noone seemed to notice.

Can someone PLEASE help? My monitor is so dark I have to highlight text on pages just to read it most of the time, and it really effects my work as a graphic artist...

Try this here.

I am able to adjust mine ok from the monitor and some image programs but after doing what it says here at this site the image and colors just look so much better.

So, I've got two separate, but somewhat related issues. One has been going on for a year and still hasn't been resolved (posted about it before) but I have some updated info, the other one is new.
AsHere I go ....

1. Can't Connect to the Internet
I all of a sudden could not connect to the internet. As my wireless isn't working currently, I used a wired connection. I am using that wired connection right now on my work computer that I am messaging from, so I know it isn't a modem/router issue. I have removed all the anti-spyware that I had and only installed Avast!, I re-installed all the drivers, and I contacted my internet provider. In troubleshooting with the internet provider, we tested the ping for www.google.com, which didn't work, but when we pinged the numerical ip address, it did. The same thing happened when I opened my browser. The representative said that the IP address was not being resolved by the DNS (is that correct)??? Anyways, that's where I am at - how do I resolve it so that the IP address is resolved?

2. First, for some extra background, please see the thread from a year ago that I had posted:
Here's what I posted initially before:
I have a Compaq Presario R3440CA with a Broadcom Wireless card. I used to be able to connect to my wireless just fine. Now when I try to 'Find network connections', the error comes up as follows:

Okay, About three months ago, I got hacked HARD...permissions were changed, administrator rights were removed from my administrator accounts, etc. i was flabbergasted. THe iactually didn't bother me though until I ran a MBAM scan and found 133 viruses and spyware instances on my drive (NOT including tracking cookies!). I cleaned and recleaned, using MBAM, SuperantiSpyware, Avira, running each one in safe mode first, then loading into my normal account and running them, and finally erasing my user account and creating a new one. But even after the new user account was created with Administrator privileges, I still routinely received virus and Malware threat warnign flags from MBAM and Avira. Eventually, Avira and MBAM were disabled and Avira was "deleted" (Windows will not uninstall because the setup.exe file has been 'Changed" and won't reinstall it because I don't have "Administrator privileges" on my Administrator accounts!) even though at startup I receive an error message saying that Avira has been corrupted. The most telling issue is that antivirus and spyware/Malware scans come up clean on Safe mode scans, but using my normal account, the machine reboots. Using Superantispyware I notice that it's always during the memory test that this occurs (and in Safe Mode, it passes through this section with no issue). None of my antivirus programs will download updates, even ones I start manually, and although I have no problem acc... Read more

Camera: AirLink 101 AWCN200

It seems the more light in the room, the more my camera over saturates. The only problem I can see is that it turns Black/Blue to Purple.

Without a source of natural or artificial light, it works perfectly, but dark of course.

Here's an example of what my Black hat looks like:

Here's what my camera does:

I've looked in the settings and what not, nothing helps. There are no drivers for the cam, as it's fully plug and play.

Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

I brought my HP Envy x360 back in June as a factory refurbished model. It worked great until this past month when I noticed the screen would get a pinkish color for a few seconds before returing to normal. Now it is stuck like that at the top of the screen, and it is starting to get horizontal lines and flickering. Unfortunately, My warranty expired in December. Is there still a way I can still get this serviced/repaired or if there is a way I can fix this.

Bought a HP vs17 dual monitor in February, and another last week. It seems their fundamental colors are mismatched...

Nothing I try - manipulating the graphics card settings or monitor menus will match up the colors between monitors. I've been reading that if you do not buy the same model around the same time from the same batch it may not be possible to match. People have suggested looking at the serial numbers to see how close they were manufactured.

Is this the case?

I just replaced my wonderful 22" Gateway FPD2275W (or something like that) as it started having issues with the monitor going blank white (no menus on the monitor, or anything), and had to cycle through the power a few times in order to (hopefully) get it going again. Had great color from both my computer and my Xbox in 1080i.

Well, I lived with that issue for about 2 days before I decided to exchange it, under the extended Best Buy warranty, for a newer HD2200 22" Gateway monitor, which is pretty much it's successor... However, I'm very disappointed so far as the color looks washed out from both my PC and Xbox over DVI and Component. I cannot get the colors to adjust to my liking, nor can I get the brightness right. I have gone through the monitor's menus and adjusted it from there as well as calibrating it with the EZTune software included with it. Over component, the video is blotchy and compressed, and the blacks aren't black- they're like an extremely dark blue and looks like a poorly compressed JPG image with hints of green and red in there. I honestly have no idea what is going on, so do any of you know of a fix or a better monitor that has component which I could exchange this current one for?

On my laptop which is now about 6 years old I have been experiencing a few issues. First as the laptop is so old it has seen its fair amount of system restores but one thing I have been noticing is that my hard drive space is disappearing. The laptop started with 160gb (shows how old it is) split 80gb between the different partitions but now it only has 69.5gb per partition, so does anyone have any clue how to restore the space?

The second problem I am having is with installing my printers, I have successfully installed two wireless printers on my desktop pc but when it comes to connecting to the printer I must first setup a temporary link with a usb to one of the printers but when I connect them together it does not pick it up. But if I plug other devices in then run fine, anyone got any ideas?

The last issue I am having seems to be some sort of autorun problem, for example when I insert a install disc the autorun box pops up but does not display the install and I only have the option the view all of the files so I have to find the setup application within the disc myself. Any ideas?

I know I am asking about a lot of issues but any help is appreciated.

I'm curious if anyone has noticed this...

Win XP and Win2k... you can connect and get webpages for a few mins and then everything dies. The only way to get the connection back is to restart and try it again. Disconnecting and reconnecting will not do the trick.

I work for an ISP and in the past week I have seen this too much. I have looked thru the forum and seen the problem with Win2K mentioned on here.....but nothing for XP.

So I guess my question is.... Any suggestions? Any Idea what the cause may be?

What I have seen is

1. Most have the patch for blaster installed
2. It doesn't matter if the firewall for xp is enabled or disabled
3. The data trf doesn't seem to stop. (at least in the few i have tested the bytes sent/rec still move)
4. The only way to get it working again is to restart the pc.

It isn't any type of spyware either. I have talked to customers with just out of the box computers and the same thing happens.

I am sure a firewall would fix this problem because it seems like they are getting attacked just like with Blaster. However, any ideas on what is doing it? A similar attack? The same attack but still need another patch?

Any suggestions would be great.

I have a website that has different colors displayed and has some pictures as well. When I look at this website on a friend's computer, the website looks fine - all the colors and pictures display as expected. But on my computer/monitor (Windows XP, Dell Dimension, Dell crt monitor), when I look at the website, the pictures do not show and some of the text colors are not what they shoud be (ex: black instead of purple). In MIcrosoft Word, when trying to set the page background color, the color template comes up fine and show different colors to choose from, but when I pick a color, the page background color stays white.

I'm not sure if this is a monitor driver issue or an issue with my video adapter or something else. When I check the monitor type in windows display properties, it shows default monitor as the monitor type. The color quality setting is at Highest(32 bit). Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Hi everyone. Recently, I've had a computer that has ran windows XP for years. Recently, I switched out my hard drive for a blank one with more space and installed Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit version. Everything installed fine but the screen resolution is too low (640x480). I've tried to change it but it won't allow me too. In addition it does not have any color settings outside of 16bit. I have a standard VGA graphics adapter with an up to date driver. I also completed a windows update for the whole system. What's up with my computer? Why was I able to have a higher resolution on my XP for years and now have such a low one on Vista?
