I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. So I'm having a problem with MSE. It's always stopping at the same file and won't scan any further. I don't know if that's a sign that my computer is infected. It was lagging when I was using multiple programs yesterday (Microsoft Word documents were freezing up, MSE was not responding either).
Here's a picture of the scan and the file it stops at: http://i.imgur.com/DVelQlH.png

i see lots of doubts expressed about using register cleaners. on the other hand this site recommends cleaning. in fact:

i believe a computer-generated recommendation on this very site is hawking cleansers to be used before and after installing / uninstalling software / hardware. i don't know what to believe.

does hp / microsoft have a registry cleaner ? they have other tools and recommendations to speed up computers.

I am concerned that Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE] is not performing as it should, because it doesn't appear to be activating and running a scan as scheduled under Settings.

If I open MSE and choose to click on the Scan Now button to carry out a Manual Scan on demand, then three events are clearly visible in 'real time' -

There is activity on the progress bar of the window that opens, and files being scanned are clearly seen. The MSE Icon in the Notification Tray shows rotational movement indicating that a scan is in progress. and,At the end, a summarised report window opens. Example here -
.......this shows how many items were scanned, and reports on the 'threats' status.

I have tried to verify my claim above, by carrying out a number of 'tests', primarily to try and determine if User scheduled scan settings, are actually initiating the automatic update and scan by MSE.

The scheduled 'test' scan times have come and gone, without any visual evidence to show that MSE has automatically activated and conducted the scan, as set by User settings. None of the following show any evidence of a scan either starting, being 'in progress', or ever being carried out;
The MSE Icon does not activate. There is no post-scan report [as shown above from the manual scan]. and,A check of Windows Update, shows that no further Updated Definitions for MSE, have been added to Update History.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials - Is it really scanning to your sheduled settings?

I don't actually watch it do it's scan but have it set to do a quick scan every Sunday at 13.00. I set it for that time as I'm not using the computer then so it can just get on with it and I don't take much notice apart from seeing that it gives the following Sunday's date for the next one.

I will say though that some updates to the defs make the icon change colour and when you bring the program up it tells you that you haven't scanned for a while and you may be in danger, I just click the scan now button, in fact I had to do that this morning.

I also have the paid version of MalwareBytes running in real time and SpywareBlaster so I'm not too worried.

Hi there,

I deleated some spyware and malware from my pc using Spyware Doctor and Adware last night. Spyware Doctor advised me that deleating the malware might have an impact on some programmes. I went ahead and deleated it anyway ...

My internet (AOL 9.0) stopped working. I have been on the phone to AOL for 5 hours and we have deleated and reinstalled AOL 8, 9, The whole thing but non of this worked.

AOL told me that I would have to get in touch with Microsoft as the new error message that now pops up when trying to reinstall the BT Voyager 105 drivers is : ERROR : Can't get registry value: key=Software\GlobespanVirata\Adsl value=driverType

Apparently I need to deleate the Key registry for this, but I cannot seem to find it in the regedit ... Does anyone know how I can deleate this so I can reinstall my AOL & Modem drivers???

I Have AOL, Windows XP Professional

Any help would be most appreciated!!!

This is a FYI that Microsoft SystemInternals includes a very good troubleshooting tool. Registry Monitor (aka Regmon) that provides real-time monitoring of what is happening with the Registry.

The contents of the ZIP file are the program files. Just copy them to a folder of your choice, then create a shortcut to the EXE.

It includes an Option to monitor during the next system boot, to troubleshoot boot-time Registry access that may be causing problems.

For clarification, the REGMON.LOG created during a boot will be in C:\Windows folder. Just remember to allow your boot to fully complete to capture all boot-time Registry access.

Hello, I recently suffered a malware problem which was successfully cleared up with help from a member of the security team of techsupportforum. According to him, it appears that the infection wiped out relevant registry keys for my microsoft account. Because of this, I am unable to do anything that requires a Microsoft account:
1 - When I try to switch to a Microsoft Account on my PC, I get the error code 0x800c0008 "We're sorry but something went wrong. Your account wasn't changed to this Microsoft Account."
2 - I cannot set up and use Microsoft Live Mail 2012. It times out trying to download folders.
3 - I cannot connect to the Store "We cannot connect you to the store..." The error code reported is 0x80072f8f".
4 - I have not been able to get Windows updates, thus leaving my PC vulnerable.

I will greatly appreciate any help with restoring my registry to working condition.

Exhibit A: The Domain management uses the registry to impose restrictions or configurations.

Exhibit B: The registry is used and accessed by legacy (non-Metro) applications

Exhibit C: Metro applications are sandboxed and cannot access the registry

Exhibit D: Windows on Arm will NOT have access to legacy (even recompiled) applications, nor will it connect to Domains

Conclusion: Microsoft may be attempting to slowly replace the domain for non-Enterprise use

UPDATE: I found this article that explains that Windows 8 will use the registry to manage metro applications. While this throws a ship's spanner into my theory, I have to note that these registry keys are OS-side, with zero ways for the Metro applications to interact with the registry. This means that Microsoft may still be slowly replacing the registry; just that it is still important to Windows 8. This design also allows for the possibility for an update to Windows 8 to (or W9) to replace the registry method without breaking application compatibility.

My browser crashed a few days ago - Firefox - so I got the crash report and noticed two items of malware noted in it - Spigot Toolbar and Metacrawler search. I ran my anti-rootkit app - Kaspersky Killer - and it removed them. I decided to give my PC a good clean out and ran all maintenance including a registry cleaner. The registry cleaner showed some weird files - I think - and am wondering if they signal a serious issue or notl - I have no clue - so have attached a couple of screen shots. The full report was too long to fit into one screenshot because there were 255 entries, all very much the same. Considering I clean my PC about once a week, this shocked the socks off me.

The reason I am sending the screen shots to you for analysis is because of the repetitive nature of the file names. Is this repetition an oddity, irregular or nothing to worry about?

Hi Dingeroo,
First, if you don't want your machine trashed, STOP using Registry Cleaners.
Let's have a look at your system.
Download and Run the Farbar Scan Tool

Download FRST64 and save to your Desktop.

Double click Frst64.exe to launch it.
FRST64 will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press the Scan button.
When finished scanning, 2 logs will open on your Desktop, FRST.txt and Addition.txt
Please post them in your next reply.

If you lose track of them, they will be saved in the same location as FRST64.exe
Feel free to use separate replies if it's more convenient.

I just got a new Iphone 6 and I plugged it into my computer, when I tried to use iTunes, I got a message saying that I needed to update iTunes in order to use my Iphone 6 with iTunes, I tried and got an error saying
Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32\SOFTWARE\MozillaPlugins\@Apple.com/iTunes.version=. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

Initially I thought it was a mozilla problem seeing as how it says "mozillaplugins" in the error, I went and looked through Mozilla for a plugin associated with iTunes and found none, then I uninstalled Mozilla Firefox all together, but it did not work, still got the error.

I browsed the interweb for answers to my problem but came up with no avail, I called Apple customer Support and was redirected to Microsoft customer support(I know there are a lot of scam "microsoft customer support" numbers out there but this was through the official website.) and he said it was an error associated with the registry and that usually means we have a virus, he said he would happily take control of my computer and help me through my issue if I had their support package, which is bloody expensive, so I thought I'd have my bud Broni help my *** (butt). Before I went to another forum category for halp. =D

In your case I would take a Win XP disk and would try to reinstall the system.
Fact is that you are not able to boot in normal mode and safe mode? so I don?t see other solution for you.
Of course the blue screen of death might be related to hardware problem (HDD issue) and in such case the system installation would not fix it your problem. Then this would require new investigation?

Although this vista 32bit system has been running with no issues, I have been notified of a single hidden file after an avira scan, which is located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DbgagD\1

Please do the following

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

I use WinASO OPtimizer to scan my registy. How often should I scan it.

I've been reading about registry cleaning and tried a free scan. The free scan found over 1200 errors. I did not allow the program to make any repairs. I decided to research registry scanners and found a review of the top five programs on PC Doctor Reviews. It listed RegCure as the top program. I ran a free scan using that and it found over 1800 errors. My question is, is it worth the $30 or is there a better program or better way to to clean up my registry to improve my computer's performance?

A:Registry Scanning

Do your research here, using the Search facility.

You will find we do not recommend these snake oil solutions because they do nothing positive, and can result in major damage to your PC.

If you are having performance issues, start a new thread (in the appropriate forum (XP for example) ) documenting what the problem is and what you have already attempted.

I keep getting a message that this update is ready to install. I have installed it about 10 times, but after it is installed, I get the update icon and the same update is there ready to be installed. When I look at the installation history, it shows that it has been installed successfully.

HOW do I keep this update from showing up time after time?

If you download and install a new application on your desktop, you always want to make sure it doesn?t contain any malware and won?t open any potential security hole, even if it?s by accident. But if you deploy that application to hundreds or thousands of computers, then that new security issue becomes much more dangerous. It?s important to know what the impact will be on your system of any new installation or patch. This is why Microsoft is offering a new tool called the Attack Surface Analyzer.

Microsoft started working on this new product last year, and recently it came out of beta. Now, anyone can download version 1.0 for free. The way the company describes it, its primary aim is to help software developers discover any vulnerabilities in their applications before they are deployed in an environment and prevent any negative consequences. But it?s a great tool for IT pros to use as well, to assess the risks of any new application. First, you run the tool on a known good system, which ends up being your baseline scan. It will create a CAB file which contains all kinds of information, from which ports are open, to how many registry keys are on the system, to whether the Windows firewall is on. Then, you can install the product you want to test, and run another scan, which will be your product scan. The tool will create another CAB file, and you?ll be able to generate a report that tells you exactly what changed.

A:[SOLVED] Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181

Hi guysmiley !

Download the install file :
Then disconnect from the internet : if wired unplug the cable, if wireless right-click the wireless tray icon and click deactivate or turn the router off. Then disable your firewall and antivirus and try to install the file. Make sure you reenable your firewall and antivirus before you reconnect to the internet and tell us how that went.

If that didn't work install this other update for XML Core Services 4.0 SP2 first. According to this thread on the ms newsgroups it seems to work for most people.

I'm using windows 2000 professional and was infected by the blaster worm (get rid of it with the symantec tool), now I'm trying to apply the windows patch, but it says I have to have at least the windows service pack 2 in order to begin installation.

I tried several times to dowload the service packs from the Microsoft site, but they are huge (128 mb) and I'm on 56k, so I always get disconnected or timed out, also tried the online installation (smaller download), but the results were the same (after awhile, the download times out and I can't resume).

Is there any other place were I can download those files?, maybe FTP or something? (maybe someone could upload them to an FTP)?

As a side note, why aren't the files zipped/rared? I actually managed to download a whole .exe file (took me about 24 hours), only to find out it was damaged!

We use a third-party Microsoft patch management system, unfortunately we have to approve all patches manually. It has become a monotonous task to jump on the security bulletin and manually "take-note" of all of the updates released (KB numbers)
to mitigate that vulnerability. After I take note of all of them, I have to jump on the "third-party Microsoft patch management system" and approve every patch (KB #) associated with that Bulletin.
I am wondering if there is an easier way to get a list of all of the new Microsoft patches released just for a specific Microsoft Security Bulletin. My current method is just sifting through the Bulletin and copying/pasting every KB number I find that is
designed to patch the vulnerability.
I would assume there is somewhere I can go or a tool I can utilize which would allow me to get the list of all of the KB numbers that need to be approved.
Or Am I out of luck (And just have to sift through the Bulletin to collect the associated KBs)?

I appreciate any and all suggestions/advice/ridicule.
