I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you ever go for years without a specific bit of software, then use it for a few months, and go absolutely freakin' bonkers when it's gone?

I had occasion to use a Mac App Store application called BetterSnapTool for quite a while, and found it to be vastly superior to the Aero Snap y'all love or hate. Anyway, now that I'm back on Win7, I've done some searching, and found a few alternatives that didn't come very close to the mark, but there must be more out there I'm missing.

The features I miss the most (in priority order) are:
Configurable snap hot spots that snap windows to a configurable position and size (not just preset options like halves, corners, thirds... you can make the windows any size you like, and have them snap anywhere)
Sensible multi-monitor support (ideally, separately configurable snap areas per display, since I have displays in landscape and portrait)
Per-application snap settings (long, skinny windows for text editor, for example)
I know I'm unlikely to find everything I'm looking for in one program, but is there anything out there (including built-in config options I might be missing) that would get me most of the way there?

A:Having trouble finding a more feature-rich Aero Snap alternative

You can take a look at DeskSoft - WindowManager - Window position and size manager

I haven't tried the program but it seems to cover much of what you're looking for. I ran across this when looking for something else and bookmarked it to look at later.

I'm just starting to use Richcopy, and I was wondering if it's possible to copy an entire directory, including the creating the target directory and then copying all the files into the newly-created directory?  It seems that I have to manually create
the new empty target directory, and then use Richcopy to copy the contents to the target directory?
Also, I'm looking for any hints to speed up copying directories with a bunch of large (multi-gigabyte) files.  I have a Windows 7 Utimate 64-bit machine, with 16GB of RAM.

A:Rich Copy questions

The current speed is fine. You cannot hope that only a copying tool can improve the speed much. Other conditions such as the speed of your hard drives or the structure of your files can also determine how fast the copying speed is.

I run Windows XP Home on an Intel Duo Core 3GHZ

I want to shuffle my directory structure about across 3 disks - two internal and one external.

This means using copy and paste in Explorer. However, if this process ever hits an issue (e.g. filename too long etc etc) then I have to restart the process again as I can't be sure what has already copied across and what hasn't. There has to be a better, more robust way to carry out this procedure (and if it was quicker too that would be a benefit!).

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

A:I'd like an alternative to XPs file copy and paste function

Ok. I think that last post was a little vague. Here's a clearer explanation.Problem: If I use XP to copy a few directories and paste them somewhere else (e.g. another disk), then sometimes I get an error message that one of the files couldn't be copied. Annoyingly, if this happens the paste process is aborted rather than continued.Question: Is there a 3rd party app, or a method in XP, to ensure that the process continues to completion, with a log file of the issues that occured along the way that I can manually clean up?Thanks,Sentry1

Does anyone know of a third party build of robocopy or an alternate command line copy utility that has similar features but integrates Smart Copy for handling Junctions Symlink and Hardlinked files ?
I have several programs that use a unusual virtual filesystem architecture that relies heavily on hard-links. I generally use robocopy for backing up my data drive since it skips existing files and reduces the time it takes to copy the drive. the only problem is that i found out that robocopy corrupts these because junctions are copied as folders and hard linked files are copied multiple times i can exclude junctions however this means there are missing paths on the destination drive.
Right now i am looking for a command line utility that can function similarly to robocopy in that it supports mirror mode and will skip existing files but that includes a Smart Copy functionality so that junctions and sym/hardlinks are properly copied with their correct relations
Please respond soon this is a major issue for me as i currently have several directory structures which I cannot back up with my current tools

A:Robocopy Build or Alternative with Smart Copy Support???

Don't these programs have their own backup utilities? If I remember correctly, copying some of these links won't help with restoring on a new machine or disk as they refer to disk block address on the original hard drive.
If the software doesn't have its own backup routine, perhaps you could use image backup. I use R-drive image which can do automatic incremental image backups on a live system, so no need to remember to do anything. I've also used SyncToy and SyncbackPro, if you want a sync program, and I think these have command line versions if you find the GUI too easy and really like lots of typing...

A:microsoft office alternative?

Hi nikeman

OpenOffice is "open source", and is distributed free-of-charge. Here is their home page --- http://www.openoffice.org/index.html --- where you can read all about it. There is a "Download" tab up on the top of the page that will take you the various versions. Yes, there is a version that runs on Windows (it's first home was in Linux).

OpenOffice can open many Microsoft Office formats, and save to those formats as well. The full details will be over at openoffice.org

Best of luck

Can someone tell me if there's an alternative to Microsoft Office One Note?
Maybe even an online version?
I love the program!! For me, it's GREAT for making notes and plans and to have several subfolders that can be many layers deep

The great thing about it: I can type anywhere and write some text - not restricted to location like you are in a document editor - similar to say Powerpoint

A few minor things that I don't like:

- not being able to have outlines on things - this winds me up!
If I've made 5 notes on a page - it would be nice if I could just have 5 outlines so I could see everything at a glance

- not being to have shapes and be able to type in them
98% of the time, I just want a rectangle, with a subtle shaded background and an outline and a shadow
Not possible
I can copy and past from Powerpoint - but then I can't edit

Everything else: I love about it!
But... I'm happy to jump to another program if it exists!

I have been trying unsuccessfully to implement Ubuntu 8.04 under MS Virtual PC 2007. So far I spent about ten hours on this activity - results nil.

There is a good analysis of the problems of using VPC to make Ubuntu work
at http://arcanecode.wordpress.com

For anyone trying to bring up Ubuntu in a virtual machine environment, this is very helpful. Many of the descriptions apply more generally than just to VPC.

I decided that I had spent too much time trying to use VPC, so I went hunting on the web for an alternative. I found the Sun product VirtualBox 1.6.2-Win_x86.msi

Within two hours, I had a fully functional Ubuntu machine running under VirtualBox.

The installation process is extremely smooth and quite intuitive - I didn't have to go looking for Help. The VirtualBox product has the virtue of allowing human errors to be corrected (using the Back buttons) and it doesn't get you lost in a tangle of incomprehensible jargon.

It seems to operate very adequately, in terms of speed. Without any tweaking, I was able to begin surfng the web in Firefox 3.0 - this post was done using FF3 in Ubuntu 8.04 under VirtualBox, installed in MS XP SR#3.

It seems to work just fine.

Hi guys,
I bought a low end laptop for my grand-mother for Christmas. She will rarely (or possibly never) use Office to create files, but I want her to be able to open the Office files she?ll receive by e-mail like Word, Excel and Powerpoint. I also want to be able to configure her internet supplier?s e-mail into her computer, which would normally require Microsoft Outlook? since I?m on a budget for this gift, I would prefer to have a free Office alternative to Microsoft Office.

1) I found LibreOffice, which seems very good for Word, Excel and Powerpoint replacements. Is LibreOffice a good Microsoft Office replacement? Do you think it's grand-mother compatible?

2) Is LibreOffice available in French?

3) I observed that LibreOffice doesn't seem to include a replacement of Microsoft Outlook? is there any Microsoft Outlook replacements out there that are still being updated and that are simple enough to be grand-mother compatible? I?m asking that because the Microsoft Outlook replacements that are not being updated would likely no longer be secure? For a normal person, I would just suggest using a web-based e-mail like outlook.com instead, but for my grand-mother, her access to the e-mail provided by her internet supplier is important to prevent too much of a change in one shot.

4) I did subscribe to this forum from an old e-mail that I almost never use anymore: is there any way to change the e-mail associated to my account or do I have to create a new account f... Read more

A:[SOLVED] Which Microsoft Office alternative should I use?

both libre and open office are good. they are generally microsoft compatible. as far as email, neither will have an outlook replacement.

You can use thunderbird from mozilla. Personally i leave my emails online and never download them to any email software. You never have to worry about moving them to a new computer and can access them no matter the device or computer. If you set it up properly, the learning curve will be the same, maybe less than if you installed an email client.

as far as your email, just click on user cp then click on edit details

A:Microsoft Office Suite - Another Free Alternative

Good UI, but too much quirks.

First: It's only available in English and Chinese, and changes regional settings while launching (that creates problems for other apps).

Compatibility with Microsoft Office is better than that of LibreOffice / OpenOffice, but still far away from being considered good: I couldn't open several docx files, had problems opening password-protected, or larger documents, many that could be opened had screwed up formatting.

As Word (doc, docx), Excel (xls, xlsx), and PowerPoint (ppt, pptx) represent the global standard office formats, a good alternative should be able to interoperate properly. Kingsoft isn't, LibreOffice is even less, OpenOffice isn't at all.

I see only one alternative office suite which is seamlessly compatible, and that's SoftMaker Office by German developer SoftMaker. This has fantastic import and export filters compared to all others, is very feature-packed, and makes Microsoft Office dispensable. They also offer a lite version of a full-fledged office suite for free, try it out:

It has the same brilliant import and export filters like SoftMaker Office; in contrast to Kingsoft Office, you can change UI language, and can download dictionaries in nearly all languages of this planet, it doesn't change regional settings when launching, it's usable portably from flash drive. Try it out.

I have been asked by a family member to 'reset' their ASUS windows 7 laptop (2011 vintage) by reinstalling the OS. The copy of windows on the machine has become corrupted, making the machine difficult to use.
I decided the best way was to backup user data and do a clean reinstall using a new copy downloaded from Microsoft. That way i could also get rid of all the ASUS bloatware and just have windows and its components. So far so good. My problems started when i went to download the file from Microsoft. I had to enter the product key before i could download it. I was running a backup at the time so didnt want to turn off to see the key on the back of the machine. I downloaded Belarc Advisor free to obtain the windows product key. Fine. Key copied into webpage. Microsoft said the key was invalid! No explanation just wouldnt accept it. Tried typing it again, copied and pasted the key from the Belarc results page, still no good. I even downloaded Magic Jellybean to get a 'second opinion'. Still the key would not work. The operating system has not been changed or upgraded save for regular updates so as far as i was concerned the key was right.
once the backup was finally finished  i was able to shut down and turn the laptop over to see the label on the back. There i found a completely DIFFERENT product key from the one i had previously obtained!! Hopefully problem solved (havent dared try it yet). A:2 Product Keys for one copy of Win7?

There is a product key and a product ID.
Computer manufacturers (OEM) install a Windows 7 image using a special product key (product ID) that is tied to the motherboard's BIOS. The Certificate of Authenticity (COA) product key is found on the sticker affixed to your computer.  This certifies that the Windows 7 operating system installed is a legal version.

Greetings Ya'll,

This is my 1st post, & since I'm trying to be a "sponge" on how Windows 7 operates, I imagine that I'll have many more.

I've been using Microsoft Word Starter 2010, up until it started freezing my PC. I actually had to hit Control/ Alt/ Delete in an attempt to get out of Word, & free up my PC. That took me to a screen that showed me that OFFSPON.EXE was not responding.

I ran a web search for this & found that it was somehow tied into the "Ads" that are supposed to come up on Word Starter 2010.

The document that I was putting together is frozen, anytime I click on to Word, & I have to repeat the process of Control/Alt/ Delete all over again.

My question is, ..., What is a recommended "Free" alternative for Word Starter 2010?

I do not want to store my data online, or on a "cloud", but on my PC.

I've also been reviewing several sites that offer Free software, & there seems to be good results with "Libre", & "Open Office", but, I'm also seeking more input on these two, or possibly any other alternative.

Any thoughts?

Hey everybody

Here at the office, we scan in leads that are mailed out to various employees. The scanner makes the file a .tiff, which has all the document images in that one file. We have to view the tiff with Microsoft Office Document Image in order to view all of the different files.

For example, if there were 40 documents scanned, and they all are put into one single .tiff. Now, if I use Microsoft Office Document Image to view it, then all 40 of them come up on the left side, and I can view them seperately.

However, if I use a picture viewer, it only shows the first document of the .tiff. I can't scroll through or anything.

Now, it's not a problem for us in the office, since we all have Microsoft Office. However, it is a problem when we e-mail them out to users that do not have this program. Is there a free alternative to this, that I can tell the employees to download, and use as the viewer for these documents?

A:I have a genuine copy of Windows 7 but issues with product code

Hello and welcome Ranger mate whether you have a retail or OEM the code is very difficult to read are you absolutely sure it is not just typing error - I have done that so many times the zeros can look at first glance like an O or a Q the B also can appear as an 8 etc etc flipping etc .

Microsoft in their wisdom also print these details so small and over patterns too which I think is pretty ordinary.

I recently had my computer repaired. My copies of all my Office programs were previously lost when I reformatted my hard drive. I now have an entirely new hard-drive and it has a few Office programs installed on it. I expect a reformat to become very desirable, if not necessary for me in the future and this time, I would like to keep my Office programs (on my external hard-drive) if at all possible. I know that the programs are written to the registry and not kept in conventional folders; so I ran a "regedit" and snooped around a little, but I was too unfamiliar with the way windows registries are organized to do myself any good. Can you help me?

I'm trying to do a fresh Windows install on a used laptop that I recently bought but when I try to download the ISO file -from Microsoft site- giving the Product Key (found by Magical Jelly Bean KF) I get a message saying "we encountered a problem with the product key you provided...".

I tried to research the problem but from the little I've found it seems I'm out of luck.

I don't know if this means the key has been used in other computers (I'm thinking maybe the guy who sold me the PC works with computers).

I tried using the Product Key on the label on the bottom of the PC but got a message telling me to contact the manufacturer of the PC or something like that.

So, is there anything I can do now?

This is an old Lenovo and I'm not sure if I can get help from them.

The other thing, I'm not sure if the HDD is original or not in this PC.

Any help is much appreciated.

A:Microsoft won't verify my Product Key

My guess would be the OS that was installed on the used laptop was bogus or not an appropriate version for use on that laptop. That being said, your best bet may be to see if you can get a system restore disk set from Lenovo...if they still sell them.

i have lost my product key for microsoft office 10 and need assistance getting it. my note book came with it pre-installed so i was wondering if hp has tabs on their product keys. if so plz give me contacts and if not thank you for your time.

A:microsoft office product key

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers that are all different. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue. The above requested information can be found on the bottom of your laptop computer or inside the battery case.  Most HP consumer class computers come with a trial or "Starter" version of Office and not the full Office suite. If you purchased a CTO (configured-to-order) computer and paid extra money for Office, you should have received a disc and COA with Microsoft Office product key. Please refer to your invoice to see if you purchased Office with your computer.  Please click the white KUDOS star to show your appreciation

I have a Dell T5500 that suffered a motherboard failure; I replaced the MB but the system would not boot. Windows was pre-installed, so I do not have installation discs to re-install the original OS. I have a Win7 Ultimate bought for a project that did not
materialise, so has never been used; I did a clean install of this with automatic activation, but now I am getting notifications that Windows is not activated.
I have tried re-entering the Product Key but get the message that the Key is blocked.
I have tried telephone activation but the 9-group ID number is not accepted.
What can I do?

I have a retail copy (Not OEM) of windows vista ultimate on a laptop recently installed.

I've come across a problem which i cannot find an answer to on the web. As i've only just purchased and installed the OS i've decided to contact microsoft help and support.

Inputing my product ID for a retail copy (Not OEM), microsoft help and support states, "No charge support is not available from Microsoft
The product ID indicates that this product may be supported by your computer manufacturer. Contact your computer manufacturer for support or select a different support option below."

If anyone is interested the problem i'm contacting help and support regarding is you cannot send your bitlocker recovery password or EFS certificate to the bitlocker website via the control panel utility.

Any ideas?

A:Microsoft help & support - Product ID

This has now been resovled by contacting microsoft by telephone.

After installing Windows Vista Ultimate with a vaild product key and activating the software successfully, the activation process issued an incorrect product ID. Whilst on the telephone, i was issued with another prodcut key. The software was de-activated then re-activated using the new product key. This then gave me a valid product ID.

This is the Microsoft case confirmation:

Case Reference Number: ************

Dear Mr. ****,

I can now confirm this case as resolved. It was a pleasure assisting you with this issue; please find a summary of the key points for your records below.

Action: You tried to setup a free support for the windows vista product.
Result: You were not able to getting a message "based on the product id not eligible for suppprt and not offered 90 days of free support".
Cause: It is because some activation files and we are not getting a valid product I.d.
Resolution: We generated a new product key "*************" and we are now eligible for suppprt and also for 90 days of free support after activation.

Should you require any further assistance with this issue, please do not hesitate to contact us with your case reference number using our email/phone support option and the information mentioned below. We will be more than happy to help you on the same.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for choosing Microsoft.

Does HP have any record of this MS product key when they originally built the laptop?

A:Missing Microsoft product key

@ioncountry? HP might have the key information; I would not count on that even assuming you had purchased the box from HP.  It is likely the information is archived "somewhere", getting it from company might prove difficult. Try the following: Product Key - Find for Windows 8 In particular the provided link inlcudes the following Section:OPTION THREE  Find Windows 8 and 8.1 Product Key with "Belarc Advisor "  ____________________________________________________________ Belarc is a very nice program and provides a great deal of information, including key(s). When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Click my Answer Accept as Solution to help others find Answers.

I upgraded my HP W7 laptop to W10 and it is running well.
But somehow the sticker with W7 key got removed/lost.
I looked behind the battery - not there either.
Is there a way to recover it.....?
Belarc Advisor showed me a generic W10 key, but I do not think I can use it to reload Windows if needed.

A:Lost Microsoft product key

Unless you have actually re-installed your OS at some stage and >> had << to use the sticker code then it will be in the Windows.old folder. (provided its still there, 30 day limit)
see this thread for key recovery, posts 13/14

If you have never used it then its gone for good.
