OE disappears from the screen but remains running in background

Q: OE disappears from the screen but remains running in background

The computer is a Pentium D, 3.0Ghz, 1Gig Ram, 250Gig HDD, Windows Media Center, Video - Radeon X1300, 512Mb

I have been experiencing OE randomly crashing when I click on Create a new Message. What in fact happens is that OE disappears from the screen but remains running in the background. I can see msimn.exe in Task Manager / Processes. The only way around this is to restart the machine.

The machine and memory tested as having no errors at the retailer that it
was purchased from.

I have just done a chkdsk and there were no errors found.

I have tried the following to relieve it:

 Update Windows Media Center
 Deleted the identities and recreated them importing the mail and
address books
 Uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled IE6
o Deleted the identities and recreated them importing the mail and
address books
 Update the computer?s BIOS
 Reformat the HDD and reinstall Media Center
o Reinstall all programs
o Update
? Create the identities and import the mail and address books
? Delete the identities and recreate them without importing the old mail and address books

In spite of all of this, it still randomly crashes when creating a new message

I am hopeful that someone can tell me what?s wrong

Thanks in advance

Preferred Solution: OE disappears from the screen but remains running in background

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After closing IE6, it remains running in background with a CPU usage of ~50%. If I open another IE6 and close it also remains open. I can close them in procexp.exe. Whatever is causing this does not seem to hook immediately on opening IE6 because I can delete the process shortly after opening and it does not stick.

So far I have run using deepest searching settings in EWIDO, A-Squared, Zonealarm, Ad-aware SE and no fix.

Using Task Manager to kill explorer.exe and restart it solves the problem for a while.

Hi ! Good People.
I have an 8 month old HP Pavillion g6 notebook Running Windows 7 Home premium service pack 1, 64 bit operating system.
PROBLEM : When I am playing a game of solitaire found at (Start/programmes/Games/Solitaire) If I select a card to move It will sometimes show the window of another programme that is running in the background on top of this card game window, ie:telstra broardband manager, or the card will flicker & not respond. Also if I try to open a programme pinned to the task bar, the icon will move to the right & back again & keep on doing this several times before it stabilises & opens.
I have contacted HP Warranty & they replaced the key board (no cost) when I picked it up the problem was still there, & the technician said it could be a virus & if so HP are not liable under the warranty.
I was using Panda 2013 anti virus when this started, then tried Windows programme, & now have the original Norton 60 day home trial programme running. All these programmes have not found the problem. Panda & Windows are uninstalled.
I am not a Techo but can only follow instructions. I was going to run Combofix & post the result, then ask for help, but it states that it may not work on 64 bit O/S. I have used Combofix on another PC & found it very good.
Is there anyone out there who can help please.

A:Background applications overtake the screen I am running

ComboFix should be your last resort in Malware removal. You can try ESET Online Scanner if you suspect that it is a virus.

Hi, this problem happened recently after transferring around 1GBs of data into my hard drive. Nearly the end of the transfer, i realise the transfer stops at 99% so i decided to cancel it but when i clicked on the cancel button it doesn't respond and so does my desktop icons. I went on by pressing the restart button so it reboot but it gets to the starting windows screen but no animations of the 4 colours came up. Then it prompted me that my computer have problems loading windows so i selected startup repair but it get stuck at the blue flowery background with my mouse and it does nothing. I have tried AVG Tuneup as well.

additional info: computer not overclocked all on factory settings.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Edit: It reaches the start up repair and begins searching but it takes a very long time. i restarted and tried entering windows using safe mode but when it says it loading the files it turned black and went straight to startup repair again.

A:Startup Repair remains on blue background with a mouse cursor

Yes i have the same problem. Anyone have a clue what to do?
Thank you.

In the last few weeks I have noticed my laptop sound works on a normal (not restart) boot, but then it disappears. I have to restart the laptop and then it's fine. The next day I boot up from cold, same problem. To clarify, on a normal boot I hear the Windows 7 startup noise, however, shortly after if I play a media file there is no sound. If I restart the laptop, everything is okay. I did install some updates through System Update which I'm guessing caused it. However, I have uninstalled them all now but the problem still exists. I have uninstalled my sound driver and let Windows reinstall it several times- no fix. Does anyone know what this exact issue is? UPDATE: Just realised when I ran System Update it did update some firmware. I wonder if that's what caused it (obviously I couldn't roll that back)

Can someone please help me this problem has got to be some quick fix. It's not a big deal, but it just gets annoying... Every time I reboot my computer my desktop background disappears and it becomes a plain black color.

Then when I right click, go to properties, desktop, and select none then apply, then reapply my original background (any kind of internet explorer wallpaper) it appears. But then it's only there until I reboot again.

Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. I've searched the internet for similar issues but have found none with the exact problem I am experiencing. Thanks!

Hello everyone,I've been having trouble on my Y520 and U410 Lenovo laptops-Coming back from reset or sometimes just during work, my desktop background image disappears almost entirely, leaving just of sliver of the image on top (Image attached). All of my drivers are up to date and pressing Windows+D or next desktop background does nothing.Strangely, the only thing I've found that actually brings back the original image is inserting a disk on key and then ejecting it. When I eject- the background image comes back until the next restart or sleep. This problem persists in both my Lenovo computers and I've seen it once before in someone else's Lenovo but never in other computers. This is pretty annoying, does anybody have any ideas for me?Thanks!

I have had numerous issues with my system since I accidentally deleted a bunch of DLL and other files using a duplicate file eraser. I forgot to check the "protect" box and didn't realize this particular software showed ALL the files and not just the duplicates that were safe to remove.

I used my Win XP pro disk to repair in order to get up and running again.

My computer now starts up extremely slow and also takes forever to shut down. But one thing at a time.

Oddly - when it starts up - it will show the wallpaper on my desktop that was previously there, but without any icons. Then some software apparently loads and then the screen goes blank only to reappear as a solid color background. This is not extremely important to me from an appearance standpoint, but perhaps it might indicate some other underlying issue?

I also show that I have 2 Motorola wireless adapters. I had to reinstall the software after the crash. I don't know how to delete the unused one. I'm guessing the one without all of the info is the extra one. I happened to find this by running a scan by DAL.

I hate the thought that I might just have to save stuff, reformat and start over.

My system works, but it has numerous glitches. I downloaded an update to my Nvidia card. That took out my sound drivers. Once I discovered that and unistalled the update - my sounds returned.

Help! I need to get this back on track and I don't know where to start.

I think it was before the windows 10 update when it started but my wallpaper will completely disappear and it goes back, and if i go to hover over my taskbar to make it appear, the icons are either in the wrong place (my volume icon will be on the left
instead of right and my start icon will disappear) or gone. Also on my taskbar, if I have any programs running with their shortcut pinned to my taskbar, the blue line indicating that the program is running will not show up. In order to get everything back
to normal, I have to ctrl+alt+del and restart it. Any way to fix this?

Hello there. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with 8 gigs or RAM (I know it's overkill) on a Z68 Extreme 4 Motherboard. My problem is Microsoft Word. After shutting it down, Winword 32.exe remains running as a process and each instance of Word that is closed leaves a separate process running at 12% CPU power each. If there are left running, the processor heats up to 125 degrees. Everything goes back to normal if I terminate the Winword processes with Task Manager. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Word. Should I uninstall again and install Office 64 bit? Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening?
Thanks, gordoncanada

I have several tasks defined in the Task Scheduler. They're all working fine. They are written in the REXX language (about the only language I'm proficient in).

Yesterday, I made a small change to one of the scripts and ran it manually, from the Task Scheduler (to ensure that it ran correctly in the scheduler environment).

The script ran to completion, but the status remained "Running". I've spent the last 24 hours trying to work out why the task sticks at "Running", only to discover that closing and re-opening the Task Scheduler makes the status revert to "Ready".

It looks like the Task Scheduler is not updating the status, when the program exits. Is there anything I can do about this (I suspect the pragmatic answer is "ignore it").

Are my scripts supposed to do something to signal to the scheduler that they've terminated?

A:Scheduled task remains running, when run manually

There is probably nothing wrong from what you describe. Pressing F5 or Refresh from the Actions pane does the same thing as re-opening Task Scheduler. I've noticed the same thing and it seems the Task Scheduler GUI is just not updated so you have to do it manually.

If your scripts automatically terminate the process when they've finished then the only thing you might want to do is set an proper exit code (if you want). This can be seen in Task Scheduler in the column "Last Run Result" for every task. For windows batch files this is how to do it: Exit - Terminate a script | Windows CMD | SS64.com
0 is the default exit code. If I terminate a batch file with Ctrl+C it will instead show 0xC000013A as Last Run Result.

Hello, i purchased a computer more than a year ago now. and i was able to run games such as "Avatar" or Black ops on my PC with no issues, now i am playing simple FPS games requiring no Video memory really at all. and my Monitor turns into standby "Auto Detection" mode, but my computer remains running.
during times like "Bomb Explosions" or when the Base Explodes for a win/lose.
I've contacted the place, they convinced me the video card somehow went bad.
sent me a new video card. 5 minutes later the computer does the same thing.

So now if i switch my monitor from my card, to my on-board video card everything works. terribly but no shut down during the games, however the games are pretty much unplayable due to low on-board video

i have no idea how this could have happened, no storms, no power surges. everything is protected and blown out weekly.

I've completely reformatted my computer a few times since the problem has started, so i know its nothing software related.

The one thing i will say is weird, sometimes when the computer monitor gets turned off during the game.
i noticed that the sound is skipping... this isn't every time but often.

Hello sbrig420 and welcome to TSF,

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree and check for updates. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Standard CleanUp!"
*Uncheck the following:
-Delete Newsgroup cache
-Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
-Scan local drives for temporary files
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility

Please run another online scan at Panda and post the results here for our review, along with a new HijackThis log.

I noticed this issue a little while back. As I shutdown/restart my laptop, I notice it switches to a secondary desktop that has been running programs.
A good example would be trying to open my Task Manager, I can Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will allow me to open Task Manager - however when I click on Task Manager, it opens on the Desktop running in the background.
I can't even access the Desktop in the background, it only shows up as I'm shutting down - closing programs that I tried opening awhile ago.

I really hope this makes sense.. it's getting frustrating.

A:Two desktops running at the same time. Background programs running.

It sounds like you have a virtual desktop.

This is not something that could 'just happen' in Windows 7. You would need to install a third party program to do this.

So if you did not install anything that might add virtual desktop capability, or this is not a situation where you inherited or obtained this computer from someone else and are not quite sure what is installed on it, then I would suggest first running virus and malware scans to start.

Hello Everyone !
I have this problem with my laptop, when i turn it on everything seems to work (i hear the fan, the HDD and the LED are on) except the screen, it remains completely black (no backlight or anything) (no POST beeps as well).
It doesn't happen all the time (about 40% of the time). At first, it was doing it only when i wake it up from Sleep, then it started doing it even in cold boot (not even the Toshiba logo shows up, nothing).

To get it working again, i shut it off, pull the battery out and hold press the power button for 1min (works 40% of the time) And/Or i remove the RAM and place it in the other slot (works 70%).

The Fixs i tried are : - Updated all the drivers
- Ran Chkdsk and SFC and it's all ok
- Updated the BIOS
- Formated my Windows 10 partition and made a clean install.
None of these worked
PS : I have a toshiba L50-b / windows 10
Can anyone please help ?
Thanks in advance !

I have a Fujitsu-Siemens (Amilo series) laptop. I have windows XP on my machine.Everything was fine since yesterday.
Now when i turn on the lap top , i can see the power lights and all but there is nothing at all on the laptop screen. The screen remains blank...no cursor...nothing at all just a dark screen. I don't know what has happened. Please guide me to solve this problem.

A:laptop screen remains blank

No picture means No device.

When the computer boots and runs just fine, and you can even hear Windows running (sounds and all), but the screen is blank, somehow you have deleted the Display Device from your Hardware profile.

I've accidentally done this before myself while trying to update my video driver. It kept prompting me to switch to the "default VGA driver" and I foolishly thought disabling the existing driver would force it to use the default. But no, when you remove a device, be it a printer or pci card or even your computer screen, Windows happily obliges and just reboots without it (you can't even get it back by using Safe Mode). Once a device has been removed, only redetecting it will get it back. And that is difficult to do with a monitor when you can't even see the screen to do it.

Unfortunately, not even reinstalling Windows or doing a "Repair" will get it back. The only solution I found to such a disaster was to reformat and reinstall Windows.

What was the situation leading up to your screen blanking out? Might it be the result of anything you did yourself?

I was greeted yesterday morning on my XP desktop with the FBI MoneyPak virus.

I was so fortunate to find this site, followed instructions with Emsisoft, and all went well, so I thought.

The green screen tint is still there. How do I get rid of it, and make sure all is okay?

Thank you! Hank

A:Green Screen tint remains

Hi HankHank,This could be hardware or software. Is this a desktop or a laptop? If a desktop, are you able to plug it into a TV or a monitor? If a desktop...same question, plus can you try a different cable? Please also follow this link, follow the instructions and post the requested logs:Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help-etavares

The taskbar is present when I'm on the desktop screen but just disappears when I shift to using a window or a program, so to access the taskbar i have to minimise all the open windows and go back to the desktop screen for the taskbar to appear.

I was referred to this forum because apparently I posted this in the wrong place. I apolgize for that. However regardless , I am so annoyed at this situation you have no idea. I ran adwcleaner, and all the tools I ran in the past from another problem I had with booting up. Still the pesky problem persists, once in a while I get someone talking on my computer with ads, once in a while... IE wants to know if you want to leave this page or stay on it,, Update Flash player.. and more. I run the cleaning tools and within a couple weeks there it is again.
I cannot find IE anywhere on my system so where in the world is it coming from.. When I upgraded from windows ?  Did it get burried someplace?
Anyhow I want it off my computer..
This is an Azus Laptop Model U52f
I am running windows 10 for a few months now
I use Chrome or Firefox as my browser
I have a pentium 4
and my info is on my profile as to what motherboard etc.
Thank you

A:Running windows and cannot stop IE from running in background

Have you set a browser as the default browser? That's my first thought as to why you keep seeing IE mentioned. The
talking ads are a different issue and will likely require use of tools not allowed in this forum to find and remove.
Here is a link for info on setting Firefox as the default browser in Windows 10. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see this:
Make Firefox your default browser | Firefox Help

Use the Settings app in Windows 10 to change your default browser
Alternatively, you can open the Settings App from the Windows 10 Start menu to set Firefox as the default browser:
Go to the Windows Start menu and click the Settings icon.
Click System, then choose Default Apps on the left pane.
Scroll down and click the entry under Web browser.

Click on Firefox in the dialog that opens with a list of available browsers.

Firefox is now listed as your default browser. Close the Settings window to save your changes.
Note: To change your default to another browser, see the support documentation for that other browser.

I have set the option "Show Windows Background on the sign in screen" in personalization -> Lock screen to true and I changed my wallpaper. The sign in screen keeps the default blue sign in background.

This occurs on my PC and my laptop. Both are running Windows 10 1511
Laptop is Enterprise PC is PRo

Any ideas? Rebooting hasn't worked on both

That's what this option is currently intended to do: when OFF, it shows solid color on login screen, when ON it shows the standard blue windows logo background on login screen. It is probably customizable, but only through a "hack" of some sort.

The ability to keep the lock screen background on login screen is coming up in the next major update. But it is not in the current official build.

There's no option to show your wallpaper on login screen and none is planned. You can, of course, use the same picture as your wallpaper as login screen background and wait till the release.

Hi there, I have a Toshiba Equium A300D-16C laptop.

It was fine until now...

When I press the power button, my laptop turns on but the screen remains black / off.
HDD indicator doesn't flash or anything ... ( in case this helps )
I've also tried to remove the battery, hold the power button for 30s and plug the power cord back in... Same thing laptop turns on but screen is black.

I tried to connect my laptop to my PC's monitor using HDMI cable but no success... Laptop turned on but my pc's monitor was showing nothing.

I haven't changed anything inside my laptop or unscrewed it.

I quite often kept my laptop on the bed/pillow so it may have something to do with overheating or something.

How did I get to this point:

Yesterday my laptop was fine, there was nothing wrong with it... I switched it off at night but when I tried to switch it back on this morning that's where I faced this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

A:My laptop turns on but the screen shows nothing / remains off.

I have a strange problem. When I start my laptop everything goes normal, but as soon as it actually gets into explorer my screen turns black. I can also hear the standard Windows sound that I am in explorer. So I think everything is fine, but I just cannot see anything!

As soon as I do a system restore everything is fine again. The only problem is... after a while it turns back of course. I then do another system restore and find myself in a vicious circle...

Also when I start it in safe mode everything is fine (meaning I can actually see things). I think somehow it automatically puts my screen to monitor or something (I don't have it connected to anything though). I tried putting it back with the Intel hotkeys to try if it's this but no result.

Quite annoying to try to fix something when you can't see anything!

I have a HP6730b with Windows Vista (64b).

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi, as the title says, the screen just randomly stopped turning on, the first instance about 2 days ago upon waking it up from sleep, I didn't know what was happening so I tried some of the function buttons to no avail, then control alt delete a few times which would make the screen flicker a bit, and then it just randomly popped up.This morning I tried to boot up, but the screen remained black and no matter what I did. I tried shutting it down with the power button and pressing the NOVO button - and that made the display turn on, so I just selected normal boot and it was fine. But it just happened again when I left the laptop for a while and the display shut down, and then when I came back it wouldnt turn back on.. and it was rather tricky getting the laptop to shut down properly as the power button would just make it go to sleep. But in the end I managed and the NOVO button worked the charm again. Anyone have any ideas why the screen wont turn on for anything but the NOVO button? Can it be a hardware problem considering this workaround?FYI: using the screen off Fn button doesn't trigger this problem

I have a H50-50 desktop that just went off warranty a month ago. I left it running while I ate dinner and when I returned half an hour later I pressed a key to wake it up from standby. The computer woke up but the screen stayed black. I pressed the esc key, ect. and nothing happened so I pressed the power button in and manually shut the computer off, waited a minute and then restarted it. The monitor screen showed the "Lenovo" name on a black background and the little wheel-like thing was spinning around, but then that went off and instead of the nice picture Microsoft provides the screen just stayed dark as the computer booted. I tried it a couple times with the same result. It has Win10 with Intel core i3. The monitor is a Samsung with hdmi connection. Everything is plugged in.

I have the ThinkCentre Edge 91z for quite a while now but the monitor isn't displaying anything anymore. It all started about 2 weeks ago, the monitor would randomly turn black and display weird pixels over the screen but the screen would still go back to normal after a short time (about 10 seconds). After that i decided to restard the pc but the monitor wasn't displaying anything, It would only show me the "power saving mode" message and goes to sleeping mode after that.Sometimes i manage to get out of sleeping mode, the monitor starts displaying the same weird pixels for about 5 seconds and goes back to sleeping modeI even tried to connect my computer to a laptop with a HDMI cable but it won't display anythingThese are the 2 things the monitor displays when the computer gets out of sleeping mode
