I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You can't change the icons for files in Windows. The icon that is displayed will either be a thumbnail or the associated programs icon.

You can only change the icon of shortcuts in Windows. If you need help doing this then let me know.

You can also change the icons of programs (.exe files) with programs such as Resource Hacker:

And if you need help doing this then I would be happy to help you.

I use shortcuts to easily get to some of my personal files on Word and Excel.

On XP Pro, you used to be able to right click on the desktop icon and there was a "change icon" button that had a target of system32.dll (I think) or you could browse to "moricons.dll".

Although this feature is still available on Program icons, it has disappeared from the personalized shortcut icons - I wonder why?

Okay, hello, this is driving me crazy so I have finally decided to sign up to these forums and ask for some help. Hi everyone.

In the places bar, my Desktop icon used to look like this:
But for some reason, I changed it and it now looks like this:
Is there a way to change it back to the default or change it again to something else? I can't remember how I changed the places bar Desktop icon in the first place, and looking online didn't help since I only got tutorials on how to change the desktop icons, but not the "Desktop" icon itself.

If anyone could help, thanks a lot. Since I'm new to these forums, if I end up posting in the wrong place, I'm sorry for any trouble.

PS oh yeah, and another is the Desktop icon when using Alt+Tab
How did I even change these icons in the first place?

A:Change the "Desktop" icon itself

Hello and welcome, Kedia

Some third party apps do have easier ways to change that icons ... here is two examples of TuneUp Styler and IconPackager
But those programs damage windows 7's system, if used improperly ... So I dont recommend those ...

You can follow the tutorial Icons - Change Using Resource Hacker , and change icon group #110 ... it will do the same thing that you want.

Hello tenforums, I hope you can help.

A friend of mine who recently upgraded to Windows 10 is legally blind and is struggling with some accessibility options. Here is what we are struggling with: We need to change the font color of desktop icons to black. Certain contrasts are more visible for some impairments and in this case, a yellow background with black bold icon text is the best condition.

What I've tried:
Tried high contrast theme / modeTried to modify regedit based on a suggestion for 8.1 here.

Where I've looked:
Control Panel - System - Advanced System Settings - Advanced - PerformancePersonalize - Change Desktop IconsPersonalize - ColorsControl Panel - PersonalizationDisplay SettingsThemes - Theme Settings

I was able to get the text black when using the white high contrast mode, but that option won't work. While it does change the icon text to black, it also takes over many other options that deliver a less than desirable contrast for the user. We originally were thinking we could start with the high contrast theme, save as another theme and then systematically roll back the changes we didn't like, leaving the black text. Does not work - when in high contrast mode it effectively locks out your ability to make certain changes.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

A:Desktop Icon Color Change - Accessibility Option

I struggled with this for some time but I found a way. If you have the background set to picture, set it to Solid color. Chances are it's black by default. This is forcing a white font color regardless what you select for a picture. Change it to say orange, which will make the font color black. Now change the background back to picture, and you should have a black icon font color.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

It is ICO_MYCOMPUTER.ico in explorer.exe in the Icon folder in C:\Windows

You will need a resource hacker of some kind so you can open the explorer.exe and import a new icon in its place. I would recommend getting a copy of explorer.exe and putting it on your desktop and then edit it leaving the original untouched until you rename it using the steps below.
Then you'll want to change the explorer.exe do the following.

In Excel 2013 (running under Win 8.1) I have the "Light Shading" icon on the Quick Access Toolbar. I use it a lot to give cells a gray fill and to clear the fill in any cell(s). But the shade of gray that it produces is darker than I want - I don't think of it as "light". However, I can't find a way to change the shade that it produces. I suppose it's set somewhere in the Registry; but so far I can't find it.

Can someone tell me how to change the shade from Excel's default? Alternatively, is there a VBA routine that I could put in Personal.xlsb to do it? That would enable me to change the color and tint to anything at will simply by editing the code.

Thanks for any words of wisdom.

A:Solved: Change shade of gray produced by "Light Shading" icon

nope, just write your own function and choose your color.
I do not know the color codes, it's limited but there is difference

You have the following options:

interior.color or the interior.colorindex

You'll have to google and play around with the values

Hello everyone,

I'm pretty sure everyone in here knows that annoying tiny window that allows you to pick an icon of your choice - you know, the one that pretty much looks like this one since God created the universe:

Since Microsoft isn't capable to make that stupid window resizable - and yes, that includes Windows 8 and most probably any other Windows in our lifetime - is there any way to change the dimensions of that Window via the Registry? Or is there a software that replaces the "change icon" window completely?

A:The annoying "change icon" window

Looks like this is a dialog resource 1060 from shell32.dll. Maybe resizing it with a resource editor will work.
You may have to change both the main dll and the shell32.dll.mui file for your language (for example the one in en-US folder). Also on 64-bit systems there are twice as many dlls to change if you want to affect both 32- and 64-bit applications.

1.Get the WMP icon in your desktop. (start > all programs > right click on wmp icon in programs list > send to > desktop.)

2. Right click on it > properties >change icon > browse (to the icon you want)

3. Open wmp , now the icon is in taskbar. Right click > pin the program to taskbar

Have now come across to one particular icon, that has the "change icon" field greyed out.

A:"change icon" field greyed out

You are doing it right. It is just sometimes software developers do things like that (another example would be MS Office).

Work around would be usage of utility which enables greyed out controls. There are a lot on the market and they are free (Windows Enabler, VeoVeo.exe, SS Enabler, etc.)

and second interesting thing...
when I click on any folder (which has new custom icon aplyed)it apears in yellow back then when I select some other folder it returns back to it's previous custom icon

A:How to change "new folder" icon?

You can change most of them by replacing the icons in your imageres.dll in

for x64 systems you have to edit imageres.dll in

as well.
Then clear your icon cache and restart.
To edit the file is pretty simple, you can use resource hacker.First take ownership of the original file, Be sure to back it up! Install resource hacker, after that just double click the file you want to edit, in this case imageres.dll, find the icon you want to replace in icon group and right click on it and replace resource, a dialogue box will open then browse to your new icon with an .ico extension, then click replace. An icon with a resolution of 256x256 pixels is best. Then go to file, click on save as, save to your desktop, as imageres.dll. Rename the original and either copy to or move the modded file to the correct folder.
Repeat the process with the other imageres.dll for x64 Windows systems.

Then do this to clear your icon cache,
To Manually Rebuild the Icon Cache using the Command Prompt

1. Close and save anything that you are working on. This command will kill explorer and restart the computer when completed.

2. Open the Start Menu, and type cmd in the search box and press enter.
3. In the command prompt, Copy and Paste each command line below exactly as is and press enter after each command.

Good Day All !!!

I have a few desktop icons (shortcuts) I'd like to change. I used to be able to right click on the icon, hit "Propertys", then "Change Icon". On some on my shortcuts that "Change Icon" box is grayed out. I've researched for hours and can't figure it out. I'm running Windows 7 as an administrator. Under the security tab all users (System, Steve, and Administrators have "Full Control". One of the icons is the Windows Explorer icon that is pinned to the task bar. The other icons are programs I installed.

Any ideas ???? Thanks !!!

Hello Smeyers,

You might see if creating new shortcuts directly from the .exe files of these programs may allow you to change the icons of the new shortcuts. I've noticed some program like Office do not let you change the shortcut icons of the ones it created by default during the program's installation.

The "no icon" icon is that icon that shows while the system is booting up, smaller than other 'normal' desktop shortcut icons. It is then replaced with the 'official' icon for that shortcut..

After removing some malware that prevented access to the internet, I found that all my desktop shortcut icons are now overlaid with that "no icon" icon.
If I drag a new shortcut icon off windows explorer, as soon as I release the mouse drag - that "no icon" icon immediately over lays the original icon.
They still work, but is untidy and makes the original icon unreadable.

I created a new user, and upon logging that user on, all IT'S desktop shortcut icons are also over laid.

What to do?

Hey guys,

I remember the feature on Windows 7 where you could choose "Hide icon and notifications" which would, well, hide both the icons and notifications.

I know you can easily hide the icon for non-Modern/Metro programs by just dragging it to the area inside the ^ icon. I've done that for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but yet if it blocks something I still get a nagging notification saying it did so.

For the time being, I've just turned notifications off inside of MBAM as it gives that option... but not every program lets you do that. A lot just force the notifications on you. When I look in Settings, it says "no apps have requested notifications yet" because I assume that only applies to Metro/Modern apps. Other programs sort-of have their own way of doing it.

Or WILL they for sure show up in Settings if they use the "normal" Windows notification method? MBAM does its notifications differently from most, but I remember that in Windows 7 I COULD get rid of them just by choosing "hide icon and notifications" from the Windows options.

Hey guys,

I am looking for 2 things which im having much difficulty, the first is during a disk format of a cd-r or dvd-r the OS displays a notification icon for the process until it is complete. My problem here is the system runs in a program that is kept in the forground and there is no access normally for the start bar or windows. During the time that the notification icon is in the task bar though it allows them full access to the start bar. Is there anyway to disable this notification icon for the formatting process?

My second question. Is there a way to auto select like a flash drive for burning everytime.

Ok so found out that during a format, which i did a dvd-r to keep the notifcation open longer that i could then modify the notifications and see that process to hide it and it looks like it stays hidden now to not pop the start bar to the front of the program.

So now i just need to find a way to auto select like a flash drive for burning everytime.

I recently installed Examsoft on my computer (a program to take exams in law school). After I installed it and rebooted my computer, some weird things happened. When I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del, the only option available was "Switch User" and all the other ones were gone (Lock this computer, Start task manager, etc.). I eventually downloaded the registry keys that were needed to get back all the other options. The options to restart, shut down, hibernate, and sleep were also missing whe I clicked on the arrow on the start menu. I also downloaded the registry key to get those back.

However, the problem that still remains is that when I open User Accounts in control panel, the option to change the user picture is gone and on the start menu the box that is supposed to contain the picture above my username is blank. Also under user accounts, the "Manage your file encryption certificates" option is also gone. Does anyone know how I can get these options back? Thanks.

Wish I had a better title, but I wasn't sure how to word this.

Basically what's happening is I have 2 instances of Firefox (different versions and different folder locations) and one of the instances is not opening where it's icon location is.

Example Screenshot:
As you can see. The far left instance does not want to open where it's icon location is.
The far right version always does it.
Even if I unpin the currently working instance (blue/orange icon) to only house 1 firefox instance (grey/black), the grey/black instance will still not open like the blue/orange instance current does (in it's own icon).
Hopefully this isn't confusing for anyone. I searched for a few terms to see if anyone had this problem and nothing came up, maybe I wasn't wording my searches correctly.

Hopefully someone can give some insights.

I would like to change an icon image and replace it with a generic image I have d/l from the web.

How do I do that?

Thank you.

A:How could i change an icon image in desktop?

You should be able to change the icon image by right clicking on the icon, going to properties, and then clicking on the change icon button. From this menu you should be able to find the generic image you want to use via windows explorer.

I am using windows 7 starter edition on my dell netbook, but find the icons a little large, with XP its simply a matter of reducing the number size in advanced settings (display properties-appearence-advanced-item) but how do you do this with 7 starter ?

I have already used the icon size set to small, but find them not small enough.

I have researched until I am blue in the face and not found out how to do this.

We are getting ready to have house guests, and I have created an account for them to use. I would like to create a desktop shortcut icon which is roughly double the size of the other icons to draw attention to it. The target file will be a basic readme with a couple of short rules for using my computer.

If I cannot find a way to create the single larger icon, I will resort to another idea I have in mind. That idea is to type the rules in Word and use Snipping Tool to capture the text and use the resulting image as a desktop background.

A:Is there a way to change the size of only one desktop icon?

Why don't you just use sticky notes ... make the note as large as you want

Hi everyone. New to the forum, hope this is the right place for this post.
So far I've been able to change almost everything following the tutorials I found here. It is just amazing the amount of information you guys have available
But there is just one thing i couldn't find: how to change the default desktop icon itself, the one you see in the explorer navigation pane and in the places bar.
I apologize if the answer is out there, but I searched up and down and just couldn't find it. I just found advice for a guy who had messed up his icons, and the recommendation was to rebuild his icons using resource hacker. Not my case.
Well, thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.
C ya.

A:How to Change default DESKTOP ICON itself

Welcome to the Seven Forums

That icon is #110 in imageres.dll and according to your system specs you're using 64-bit so that imageres.dll is in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Let me know if you need more help.

Hello I am new here and need a little help

I have Vista Ultimate x64 and when I click start then click on my user name all personal files come up however "Desktop" has a standard icon instead of the Vista default icon

I right click on it hit properties but there is no customize tab so I tried to edit the desktop.ini file it is currently:

[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769

Nothing still the standard folder icon so I think for some reason it is flagged as a system file when it should be flagged as non-system file

I also tried right clicking the desktop -> personalize hit change desktop icon highlight my user name click restore defaults hit apply then then ok and nothing

I did reboot my PC after making all of the above changes

If I could get it back to the default icon that would be great thanks

EDIT: forgot to mention the customize tab is there if I click on other folders clike C:\Fraps for example

I just uninstalled language packs for Office 2007
After uninstalling I have this icon on my desktop: "Microsoft OneNote Namespace Extension for Windows Desktop Search" Right clicking the icon I only have the options to Cut, Create Shortcut, and Delete.
When I delete the file it isn't actually removed (refreshing the desktop it comes right back).
It's really bothering me!
