Windows Vista, I tunes, ATI Radeon, Eithernet Card, Problem - Related??

Q: Windows Vista, I tunes, ATI Radeon, Eithernet Card, Problem - Related??

Got new computer in April of 2007 (HP Media Center M7747C) running vista and Norton 2008 (now) started with Norton 2007.

No problems until lightning hit my house in August of 2008. At that time I needed to replace my Ethernet card. (my surge suppressor did its job for everything else and sacrificed itself – I was very happy about that).
Because my Ethernet card was part of the mother board (or so I was told) I needed to put the new one in one of the spare pci slots. This worked well and I am still using it today. It is a dlink 10/100.

In September of 2008 my computer would not start and went into a black screen saying that there was a problem with vista loading. I was able to load the os in safe mode and I determined it to be a bad graphics card.

I installed a new graphics card and because I was in a rush and needed it to work, I live in a rural area and my options for computer parts at odd hours are Wal-Mart or Office Max (60 miles round trip). I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a $99 ATI Radeon HD 2400 pro because it was the only card they stocked that fit into the pci express slot the old card was in and I was out of PCI Slots. This solved the problem immediately and my computer appeared to work normal. However as I found out several minutes into the new card it changed my sound settings and would no longer play over the speakers that connected to my computer or if I plugged in headphones still no sound. I did some research and found that there is a problem between the ATI card and vista sound drivers and there is apparently no software fix but someone suggested that if you go into the bios and enable the sound function you can get around this problem. I guess there is a basic on board sound card? I did and it worked fine, I really do not care about HDMI sound – I just want sound. I think this graphics card is actually a lot more than I need but I needed something and this was my only option.

Right before Christmas 2008 my sister in law needed to send some pictures and put her SD card in my computer and send the pictures. No problem. Not thinking (and not knowing it was going to be a big deal) we left the card in the computer and shut it down. When we started the computer up the next day Vista would not load and it went to a black bios screen. I removed the card and did a hard restart and the computer worked fine. Just to be on the safe side, as I often do, I had Norton do a complete scan and we found no problems.

On Christmas 2008 I received a Nano and loaded I tunes (something inside me said there was going to be a problem, I can picture Bill Gates and Steve Jobs fighting it out in my C drive, gladiator style). The first load of I tunes was problematic (seemed very unstable and buggy) and I probably should have stopped right there but I uninstalled it and tried again. The second time around it was fine and it graciously took all of my mp3s from windows media player and imported them into itunes. Great – no problems…. The only thing is with the load from Itunes it changed my sound settings back to the ATI HD sound. So I had to go back into the bios and change it back to the “on board” sound card. No problems and everything seemed to play nice.

On Christmas I gave my wife, among other things, Bookworm from PopCap games. We had played and really enjoyed bookworm on our previous xp machine but that did not work on vista. So I purchased the edition for vista and loaded it. Once loaded it also seemed very buggy but we left it on.

Right before new years the computer would essentially crash and go into a black bios screen saying that it was searching for drives and after it checked the C and D (d is a crash drive pre installed by hp) it was looking for the A drive ( to my knowledge I do not have an a drive), and then it prompted me to install the crash cd that came with the computer, it also stated that it did not find the key board. I did not want to do this [install the crash cd] so I did a hard start and it occurred two or three more times, one of those times the computer just started but it did not wake the computer monitor. By this time I needed to be elsewhere and just shut the system down and let it sit. I was thinking that the mother board crapped out because it was not recognizing the usb inputs on the wireless keyboard. When I returned from my obligation I started the computer and it worked fine, no black screen everything seemed to work fine, although it did state that windows “experienced a shutdown” or something like that etc.. But now my sound is not working and is back to the “Digital Output Device HDMI” with no sound.

1. My question is, if I go back into the bios and change the sound setting back will it become unstable again?
2. Should I uninstall I tunes and/or Bookworm because apparently one of these are causing a problem?
3. Are all these problems the result of this ATI Graphics card and should I take it out for a much less complicated one?

Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This is my first time here...

Ok i just rebuilt my computer because my motherboard got fried and i bought a new case and have a gently used motherboard, from my cousin. The mothebaord is not damaged because it was running (with full pci slots) before we installed it on the new case.

Whats the difference between a NIC card and an eithernet card? if ther is a differnece? anyway...

Im running windows xp home edition and usually when i build/fix computers it auto detects my cable modem internet settings, but with this new computer its not detecting my ethernet card...i was thinking about downloading drivers for it, but i wondered how would drivers help windows detect a card it doesn't even know is there?

btw i tried it from cable modem to nic card & from cable modem to router to nic card and doens't work either way for that computer (but other computers on the network get internet). Could it just be that pci card?

Hey there,

I started to have this problem earlier today. I was told that I got the MSN Virus, so I downloaded MSNCleaner. It dutifully found and removed a file called nsreg.dat, a file related to the popular MSN virus.

Then, I started to have problem with Windows Security Center. It told me that Windows Firewall has been turned off. When I tried to turn it back on manually, I was denied by a greyed out window and a message saying: For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy. Btw, my computer is on a very basic home wireless network.

I tried to go into Services, but everything seems in order there. I couldn't toggle the firewall setting in MMC either, and Vista doesn't have regedit. I am kind of running out of option and had to suspect that my registry has been modified by virus or malware. However, I have ran scans with NOD32 and Ad-Aware and found nothing out of the ordinary.

I just downloaded and ran HijackThis after a system restart. The log file is attached. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks!!!

I am having problems downloading the correct version of I Tunes for my new laptop.

Is there a simple way that I can download the correct version of I Tunes that will run on my PC?

I have a radeon graphics card, I think it says 3600 but will look inside again and make sure.

This is from a 2004 ish custom built computer.

It worked fine with XP and I used it on my tv and my monitor, at the same time.

I am new to why hardware works and doesn't work but can open this up to answer any questions.

As soon as I installed vista, the 32 home vista program.

As soon as I did that it no longer thinks I have the AGI card.

I downloaded the software and tried to uninstall and reinstall about 4 times.

It appears to be installing correctly but then vista says I only have a standard video card.

I have read a few forums and do not understand where to find these areas that I can change these settings that are mentioned as fixes for this error.

I have looked and spent about 12 hours trying.

I have given up but my son wants to play his game again and we can no longer use two monitors, so we can't watch things on tv like we used to which is a big bummer.

The builder hates vista and said don't install vista so i am not going to beg him for help yet.

If someone can take some time, I won't rush you, I just need some plain simple language help.

I open it, clean out the dust, have changed hard drives, helped others unfreeze their software, unfreeze my own, but...

I haven't played with bios or much else than I mentioned.

Thanks in advance and I appreciate it, Destalee

PS - I can call and try to walk through things that way too.

I can access my currently downloaded music, apps etc.... if i click on the x when it says i-tunes store is loading, and can rome through i-tunes fine.
It will also play all my music with no problems.

Have done a registry clean, Virus Scan, Disk Check, Disk cleanup and Defrag and still no luck

A:Direct X Problem (gfx card related?)

I doubt it's this, but you never know. Make sure DMA is enabled. Go to device manager, open up the IDE ATA/ATAPI channels, then right click on each one and select properties>advanced and set each device to 'dma if available' under the transfer mode.

If it's not that, make sure all drivers are up to date, along with directx. You should be using DirectX 9.0c. You might want to uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the vid card too.

ACTUALLY, just thinking here......did you install ALL drivers for the mobo when you built it? There should have been a disk with the mobo when you got it. If you didn't, nothing will work correctly.

Video Card/Monitor Related Problem - New Problems, Please help.

Over the last few weeks, occassionally the monitor would not turn on when I turned on the computer. A simple restart of the computer usually fixed this. Yesterday however, the monitor decided not to turn on period, no matter how many times I restarted.

First I decided to try to isolate the problem, whether it was monitor or possibly video card related. I tried 2 other working monitors and found the same affect so I concluded it was not monitor related. I then took out the video card and tried plugging into the onboard video card on the MB and it worked first time, no problems.

I then assumed it must of been the video card as it was one of the oldest components in the computer, Nvidia Geforce 4 MX440.

I went to my local computer shop and got a decently priced new video card, a Nvidia Albatron Trinity Geforce 6600. I was also suggested to purchase a new PS as my current one was a 350W, so I got a 450W. I installed the PS no problems.

I then got a small paint brush and brushed away any excesss dust that may of been in ports etc, removed ram, video card etc. I installed the new video card, plugged it all in and still the same problem. Nothing on the monitor. I then put back in the old video card, same thing again. Nothing. I also tried 2 other different sticks of ram, no change.

I then tried it again one last time with the old video card and bingo, it works, WTF. I put the new video card in and it sti... Read more

A:Video Card/Monitor Related Problem

You need to uninstall the old graphics card driver (in add/remove programs), shut down, remove old card, install new card, restart, cancel Window's request to install generic driver, install new driver and restart. That should do it.

When I say shut down, I mean also unplug or switch off power supply. Download the latest Nvidia Forceware driver ahead of time to have it ready.

About two months ago I built my own PC, for a month everything went great. Then my hardrive failed, fair enough I thought and bought a new one, didn't really loose much. About a week later, everything was going fine again but then I was playing Half Life two and these weird lines/dots appeared all over my screen, then my PC BSOD'd then reset it self.

Half Life Two is my favourite game, I also play a mod for Half Life called Garry's Mod. After that first BSOD, I could play Garry's mod/Half Life 2 for about an hour before it happened, I was happy to do this, but gradually the time became less and less. Now the moment I open it I get a BSOD (as soon as I go into game).

After testing games, all seemed fine except Source games (Half Life 2, Counter Strike Source, Team Fortress 2 etc.) So I stayed away from them despite them being my favourite games.

I was playing Knight's of the old republic a really old game, and that was fine. Then I played Black Op's on extra high detail for around three hours straight and no BSOD. I also tried GTA IV, on high detail works fine played it for hours and hours no problem. Knight's of the old republic a really old game also has this BSOD error, and Star Wars Galaxies. It is REALLY starting to bug me now.

It has only happened once outside of a game and I was browsing the internet. My dad thought it was a loose wire or something, so he wobbled every part of my PC and nothing happened. He replaced everything with bits from his P... Read more

I have a Kingston USB3 multi card reader that was working fine with Windows 7. After upgrading to Windows 8 on Sunday i now find that the SD card slot works fine, but the CF slot wont ready my CF Card, it just sits there flashing away.
Now the strange bit. I took the card reader and connected it up to two other PC's, both running W7 but USB2 and had no issues. The CF card and slot worked fine. The card is from my DSLR and is definitely working ok, but i only have the one CF card so cant really test the reader.

I know there are USB3 drivers issues under W8, as in no Intel USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller drivers, so speeds are not what they should be, and im wondering if this might be the problem.

Any ideas most welcome. I do have a new card reader, just in case, so need to test that out this evening but if the old one works ok on other PC's i cant see that this is the problem.

A:[SOLVED] i Tunes on Vista

Hi. . .

To install any program in Vista you need to get past the UAC prompt. If in your work environment that requires a password, then it must be provided when the UAC asks for it.

If the laptop belongs to your employer, there is nothing that I can do to help you. If it your own personal laptop used by you at work, there should not be a problem as you would have the admin password.

Many employers frown on employees installing programs such as iTunes because of the possibility that copyright infringement may occur leaving them potentially liable. iTunes itself is would not be a violation, but the music files copied into it may be. Also, they do not want such items on work computers as the files introduced may compromise the corporate network should they contain viruses.

I have done an awful lot of searching through a variety of forums like this to find fixes...
I have tried:

2. Going into Device Manager and tried to delete the CD rom under the IDE ATA controller
3. Went into regedit and followed others directions... but don't have an upper or a lower filter to delete?
4. Tried to delete my Itunes altogether. but found that I did not have permission? WTF? (Another known issue with Vista, or so I have read)

6. Some have suggested re-installing Vista, or re-installing my drive software... how do you do that if the computer isn't recognizing the cd? hmmm?
I am very frustrated, and have seen that none of these fixes are working for me???
Does Anyone have any other suggestions?
My computer is an acer laptop, with Vista on it.
I am okay with computers and can follow VERY CLEAR directions, but am apprehensive to try vague ideas... so please offer suggestions that are step by step so that I can follow them.

Upgrading my evga GeForce FX 5500 to the best AGP I could find at a good price:

Visiontek's Radeon HD 2600 XT

Followed instructions, clear old drivers with add/remove programs like nVidia likes. Power down, swap cards, reboot. Don't let XP plug n play, load drivers from CD. Problem is after I get the drivers on, for some reason XP is detecting another unknown PCI device (nothing in any of the PCI slots), and the 2600 XT doesn't seem to be running the graphics, seems like its still running on-board video. When I go to update the drivers for the card, the zip file downloads, extracts, starts the install wizard, then tells me no compatible hardware was found and stop install.

In device manager window, I'm seeing the 2600XT in display adapters, but also the horrible yellow ? for unknown PCI device further down the list (not in display adapters). I've tried forcing drivers on the unknown, but nothing takes. I've cleared all ATI drivers, updated mainboard drivers and reinstalled video drivers several times and no luck. I've tried skipping the whole Catalyst thing and just getting the video driver, I've checked and made sure DirectX is up to date. The drivers aren't XP signed, but I don't think that would make any difference.

At this point, I've cleared out all the ATI drivers, and swapped back to my FX 5500. Am I looking at bad drivers, bad card or imcompatibility with a slightly older comp?

Hello! I recently just brought a new video card: Sapphire Radeon 9100 Atlantis 128mb DDR. My old card is NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 32mb.
ok, that's what I did.

First I turn off my computer and take out my old card and then plug in the new card in the AGP slot. No problem.

Then I turn my computer back on. Windows is in 800x640 resolution and 16 colour mode.

So I install the driver from the CD-ROM provided and restart. Stil the same.

Then I look at the device manager, it seems that the Radeon card has a resource conflict. Under the resource tab it says: Not enough free resource [code 12] Try disabling another device.

So that's what I did, i tried to disable the sound card. Still the same problem. I disabled the network card, same problem. So I go to and tried to change the resource setting for each device, but they don let me change it. So now I have no idea what to do... please give me a hand, thank you.

I"m using Win XP, The other cards I have is Creative Sound card, and 2 ethernet network cards. I notice that the sound card and the Radeon card both uses IRQ 11. But I can't change their settings.

Help!!! I have a Medion Desktop PC-MT6 (200Gb HD, 3.0 Ghz, MD8088 main board) which I purchased in April 2004, my operating system is windows XP. The graphics/video card (ATI Radeon 9800 128mb AGP) recently became faulty. I then purchased a new PNY AGP graphics card which did not work due to it not having the connecting slot which attaches the lead from the motherboard. I need to know what is the best type of video/graphics card to buy which is similar to the ATI Radeon 9800 128mb and also which will have the 2 connecting slots ( for the scart and the lead from the motherboard ). I have searched almost everywhere possible for a ATI Radeon 9800 128mb card but it seems that it’s not in production anymore.
Any information that you can provide me in location a similar matching graphics card will be appreciated ... Thanks

ok i got this card around a week ago and decided to do some small overclocking so i downloaded ragetweak and overclocked with it. then while playin far cry i didn't notice much of a difference in performance and read that its not that smart to overclock a ati radeon 9800 pro with stock cooling unit so i turned it back down to factory standards... but lately i've noticed something horribly wrong in my games. expecially on faster pace games such as UT2k4. its like the frames are loading fast enough or something i dont know what but u can see lines that look like splits in the picture and it gets horrible noticeable when running ut2k4 with all settings maxed at 1024x768. and its unbearable when at 1280x1024 res. i can even set all settings to lowest with all the options turned off on 1024x768 and still have this noticble choppiness to the gameplay. i thought the 9800 pro should be able to run un2k4 at highest settings on 1024x768 at least considering my nvidia 5200 could run it at mid settings at 1024x768 NO PROBLEM... now it seems as if my 9800 pro is actually performing WORSE than the 5200.

the rest of my specs are

2.8ghz p4
1 gig of ram
80 gig hard drive tho i dont think thats to important.
asus p4c800-e deluxe motherboard
soundblaster live sound card
this is really starting to get irratating and if i did mess up my card overclocking then if i return it is there a way they can tell its been overclocked and wont accept it. i bought it at circuit city.

Had a frustrating afternoon trying to get my triple-monitor setup going again; I had WinXP for years with two video cards: a single, simple VGA / PCI card, and a recent Radeon HD 4670 card with two outputs. Under XP everything was recognized without incident, first repeating all three monitors and then able to extend windows to this monitor under Display Preferences.

Now under Windows 7 RC, I did a fresh install with both cards inserted, and only the single VGA card would drive its monitor. The HD 4670 drivers are listed in the Device Manager, I removed and installed the ATI 9.9 version software several times, and the single VGA output is the only thing I get. I even tried the 'F8', selected the unsigned drivers, and still it didn't bring the Radeon to life.

I pulled the single VGA card out, and bam the two monitors off the Radeon come alive. I install the CCC and it works just fine. And then I shutdown, add the VGA card back, and get the single VGA output again.

Other than getting a newer video card (hey, I could go for a fourth monitor), any other ideas or suggestions? I've learned a lot this afternoon reading up on all the interesting Win7 stuff here - thanks for any help.

A:Sapphire Radeon HD 4670 and second VGA card problem

Disable any onboard graphics in the bios, if it is not. Then try both of your cards together.

Also in bios, assuming your Radeon is PCI-E, make sure PCI-E is selected as the default first display. If your Radeon card is AGP, make default first display AGP. Not onboard or PCI.

If that doesn't work, you can try moving the single output cheaper card to a different PCI slot. Switch it with another card if necessary.

Update the PCI card to latest driver you can find for it.

Hit windows key+P when you are in Windows with both cards installed. See if it helps any.

Please, puleeaasse, someone help me! Trying to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 8000 video card from ATI M4 32MB to an ATI 7500 64MB card. Uninstalled old drivers, pulled card, installed new card, couldn't get new drivers to load, pulled new card, installed old card, now can't install ANY drivers! I think I'm running on safe mode video drivers or whatever the minimum installed is (640x480, 16 bit color). Device manager says I have no VGA drivers installed. I have no display adapter listing in device manager. My video card is not recognized even with add new hardware. I read in another forum that win2000 pro does not have VGA drivers included. Is anyone running an ATI video card with win2000 pro? Help, I just want my old display back!

A:radeon video card driver problem!

Have you downloaded and installed the correct Windows 2000 drivers from ATI's website? Without these you won't get anything over 640 x 480 and 16 colors.

These should work for the 7500:

The DELL website would have the drivers for the old card under your system downloads.

Oh, wait this is a laptop isn't it? If so ignore everything above this.

You should have recieved a driver CD with the new card - you must run the setup on this CD to install the new drivers.

I'm not sure if I should have posted this in the games forums

Yesterday I got my new Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB graphics card. I upgraded from a Gforce 3.

I know this is a sweet card but strangly I'm not seeing much of an improvement in my graphics processing AT ALL. I still get really low FPS (20 at times) in UT2K4 with LOW settings.

Why is this???? Is my 1.5 GHZ processor bottlenecking everything or what? Could I have it set up wrong?

Drivers are up-to-date...

Any help is appreciated!

My dad's fitted the new card in, and Im assuming he's done it right because he put the last one in, but for some reason, it just wont install.
Everytime we get:

"Setup was unable to complete the installation.
Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA
driver before running setup."

And Im afraid I have absolutely NO idea what on earth that's supposed to mean or how to do it.

Any help's appreciated.

One thing to try is to make sure that all old drivers have been completely removed. This is a link to an ATI utility that does that for ATI cards. What brand was the original video card?

A:Visual problem with ATI Radeon graphics card

Let's start with doing this first,

If you're unsure of what anything is this should show you,

Speccy - System Information - Free Download

Also help to know the make and model of power supply you have. For this you're going to have to actually look at it as ther is no way to find out with software.

Once you have done that then it will be far easier to help you.

What kind of computer or motherboard. On some you disable the onboard video with a jumper on the motherboard and on some it has to be done in the BIOS.

I am having trouble with all crap. I want to install a Radeon 9000. I need help with the drivers.

Here's my stuff:
Windows XP
Via CPU to AGP Controller(not sure if it is totally updated)
S3 Grapics ProSavageDDR
Intel Celeron 1.70 GHz

Okay... in the book it says I need to download the latest AGP drivers. I can't find anything like that in www.viaarena.com .

Please help me.

What you need are the 4-in-1 drivers. Those have the agp driver incorporated. Some time ago you used to be able to download separate but lately you need the whole thing.

I have a Dell that currently runs Vista which came with the computer. It has been running great ever since I got it up until now.

I have downloaded a few files 2 days back which I think one of the files is the root problem.

My system is running fine but a bit laggy on the internet and freezes some internet pages up, so I restart my computer, it loads fine into the logon screen.

I put my password in my username to log onto vista and it goes to a blank screen, luckily bringing up Documents with my files in it for some reason which is how I still am able to get on here and post.

I guess all I can simply ask is...What's Wrong? I sure it's a virus, but has anyone else out there heard of such a process?

A:Solved: Problem with Vista. Possibly virus related.
