IE impossible to solve? What else can I try?

Q: IE impossible to solve? What else can I try?

Hey Hey - Happy Holidays all!!

Got a machine running XP Home SP1 and it started having strange IE problems, like not displaying backgrounds on some sites [they were mostly php Nuke sites]; then it started crashing all the time when going to Windows Update site. Then started crashing all the time unpredictably and couldn't find a pattern.

No virus [Norton clean], no spyware or adware [Webroot SpySweeper clean]
Tried reinstalling XP but to no avail
Tried to install SP2 in hopes that it would over write problems, BUT it WILL NOT install - - goes for a while and then just stops - - no messages, nothing, just stops install - attempted it 4 times and got a partial install is all; had to uninstall that.

Any ideas? Please!!

Thanks all and have happy, healthy holidays

Preferred Solution: IE impossible to solve? What else can I try?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: IE impossible to solve? What else can I try?

I don't have XP so I have no first hand knowledge of it. However, you will find links to articles about failed SP2 installs in this list;http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/best_of/xpsp2links.htm

As for your original IE problem, I wonder if you can still try to 'repair' IE like you could in the older OS's?. To do it, you went to Add/Remove, selected IE to uninstall, and then were given the option to repair it.

Assuming that is still possible in XP, I am not saying it will help your problem because I just don't know.

like 6 hours ago ....I recently got this message :

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

this came up when I was trying to go into any folder on my desktop .....my documents......and any other folders I have. I can go into My Computer but when I can there I cant get into my documents or my C Drive where I have alot of important stuff which I really need to get into asap.

I was searching through forums on google ......for this type of situation....I found alot of people with the same problem..,....the one I heard that would work is using FixPolicies.exe........but the problem is when I use that I can install it and everything ....but I cant seem to open the folder .....and that Restriction message comes up again when I try to open the folder ....soooo I really dont know what to do......I must figure a way to get into my documents...

Im running on Windows XP ...and yes I am the system adminstator as well...I have scanned my computer ....I had 5 trojans detected.....they have been removed.......

Any HELP!!! would be Great..ASAP ...... ..im in a total jam right now.. ..I hope I dont lose any of the files im my documents.

A:Impossible Restriction Error - Need Help How to Solve

Hi studyhard4life and welcome to TSF !

Your restriction issues are probably caused by the trojans or by the fact that you removed them. An antivirus will detect and quarantine infected files but it won't revert the changes those files made to your system. A malware infection rarely comes alone so there are probably remnants or other malwares on your system.

Please follow these 5 steps and read the instructions carefully :
http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html
Post and attach your final logs in a new thread in the HJT section. Be patient as that section is very busy, the security analysts will get back to you with specific instructions as soon as they'll have reviewed your logs.

I have scoured the internet for weeks for a resolution to this problem to no avail. Please someone help! I'm running Windows 7 Pro.
I recently built a new gaming PC with 100% new parts except my old internal 2T WD HDD I moved from my old computer. With this new PC I bought a SSD to load the OS and other small documents and frequently used folders. I want to use the HDD to save larger
files like games, videos, pictures, music, etc... Currently my PC recognizes the SDD as the primary drive which is fine, that's what I want. And although it recognizes the HDD and I can drag things into the HDD, it ALWAYS asks for permissions, "Destination
Folder Access Denied" and I just hit the "Continue" button that has the administrator shield. I am logged in as an administrator and the problem has nothing to do with the UAC settings (I've tried them all anyway just for good measure). What
is going on here?! It's becoming a serious problem as I can't drag any music from my HDD to itunes preventing me from updating my music selection. I can't automatically save any video I record from gaming to the HDD because any and all recording software refuses
to recognize the HDD as a saving destination. In fact, I can't directly save anything to the HDD, it always has to be moved manually after saying to the SDD. It's like my computer recognizes the HDD as a foreign drive or something. Do I have to wipe the HDD
and re-partition it or something???

Hi there,
I have spent days and days on this problem and am hoping someone out there can help me. I have an Epson Workforce 600 network printer, connected wirelessly to my home network. Signal is extremely strong. Computer #1, which is XP, is having no problems using the printer normally. Computer #2, which is XP Media Center edition, can print to the printer, but it is very very slow. If I go into printer properties, it literally takes about 30 seconds for the printer properties screen to pop up on the screen.

I was hoping this Hotfix would solve it, but it did not. Here it is:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970048

Here are the things I've tried on computer #2:

1. Uninstalled and reinstalled all the drivers, rebooting each time, many times.
2. Went into printer properties, then ports, and selected "RAW" vs "LPR" under port configuration.
3. Created a new user profile on computer #2, did not help.
4. Deleted all unused/old printers.
5. Manually added the printer using Epsonnet printer port.
6. Tried "sharing" the printer from computer #1, adding it to my printers on computer #2, still same problem.
7. Updated all drivers from Dell's website for the computer, windows update is current.
8. Full virus/spy scan with Kaspersky and Malwarebytes.
9. Deleted all printers, rebooted, added back again.
10. Cursed at computer.

I have a folder in my external terabyte that appeared some time ago. I can not delete it with any software. I tried to delete with DOS and it says all the same. The problem is that it will not let me downgrade it to a write-able format. It seems to be locked in READ ONLY status. I have attempted to take ownership of the drive and the files, but I can not get rid of it. When I first noticed it, it was random letters. When I tried to delete the file it turned into many many "Z's". When I ran the DOS delete protocol it changed into 6 "Z's"; with in that folder is a empty folder called "Update". Since then I have not been able to do anything about it. I don't know what to do. I even downloaded a program called Delete on Boot, and still no success. I have been coming here for about a year when I caught the Rogue Internet Security 2010. It was since then, 12/30/09 the day that i reformatted to yield to the virus's victory that the file first appeared in the external hard drive. I am wits end and I know someone out there can help me. Please tell me what to do. I was told that it was very complex and destructive hack file. Am I infected again?

A:How is this even impossible?

Sounds like you may have an OEM System Builder versions of Windows 8. It is intended to be installed by someone or a company building a new computer that is to be resold. That particular version includes a personal use license which allows anyone to buy an OEM System Builder copy of the software and install it on a (new or old) PC that is intended for personal use. It should have come with an installation key.

Hey guys it's me again with my annoying and those that seem to be impossible-to-fix-problems.

Well 3 months ago i bought an AMD 5600+ Dual Core and i had lots of problems since then, believing it was defective, i wrote to AMD support and requested an RMA. My replacement arrived today. It fixed LOTS of random crashes and my computer was able to boot up properly with both rams placed on in dual channel. I went to play on Soulstorm, it crashed, sometimes half way through a game or sometimes about 5 minutes into the game. I went on another game which is Company of Heroes, it crashed too.

The only reason i tested these 2 games was because they crashed most of the times when i had the defective processor.I thought it was the RAM but i thought it wouldn't make any sense because while waiting for my replacement to arrive, i put in my old AMD Athlon 3500+ and it worked fine with EVERY SINGLE games so it couldn't be the RAM and it can't be the replacement either. Not knowing what else to do, i took one stick of ram out, and guess what? It worked like a charm ! I really have no idea what's going on inside but if anyone had been through this or anyone who knows how to fix please help and....ermm if it works you'll be able to rest assured that a person on earth is grateful and just wants to kill you with hugs XD

Do you think I will have any problems down the road?

A:So this supposed to be impossible?

I've used an Ultimate upgrade DVD to do a few clean reinstalls on the same machine. I would think you'd need a new key to activate the same installer to a different machine. If you used the same key both times then one will show up as non genuine, eventually, I think at least.

I have even done all of those methods with the HD booted as a slave.

any suggestions plz reply.

A:Ive Tried. Impossible to Delete!

Here is a simple procedure

Sometimes you want to delete a file but when you do so an error message pops and tells you it cannot be done. Do successfully delete such a file do the following:

Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open.

Close all open programs.

You now need to close EXPLORER.EXE. The proper way to shutdown Explorer is to raise the "Shut Down Windows" dialog (select "Shut Down..." from the start menu), hold down CTRL+SHIFT+ALT and press the CANCEL button. Explorer will exit cleanly.

Note: The <CTRL+SHIFT+ALT> at the 'Shut Down Windows' dialog method of closing Explorer is built into Explorer. (It was specifically designed so that developers writing Shell Extensions could get Explorer to release their Shell Extension DLLs while debugging them).

Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory where the undeletable file is located in. At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename> is the file you wish to delete.

Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell.

Close Task Manager.

or

(Tip modification submitted by James R. Twine who has a great utility called Delete FXP Files that can help you delete files and folders that simply won't go away).

So far I've run CW Shredder, Spybot S&D, and Adaware. The last two seemed to help, but adaware was unable to delete one of the trojans and the problem is still there.

OK, this is not a hasty reaction - I've had a laptop with Windows 7 for over a year and I cannot use it, at all. I've tried many, many times over the last year and it has wasted hours and hours of my time just trying to do what I do on my XP desktop. Please don't try to dissuade me - I HAVE TO put XP on my laptop now. W7 is a joke - trying to find files on a memory stick took me an hour today - where was the View button? Where was "arrange files by name"? Instead of some random order courtesy of Microsoft. OK so it's a right click but I want a button! I mustn't go on. I have an XP disk - I could just overwrite W7 and get rid, I think. I am really just asking whether I could/ should keep W7 in the background somehow - in case I am forced into ditching XP at some later stage when MS decide to cease support on it. However if it's complicated and takes more hours of my time, then forget it. So do I just insert my XP disk and go? Or what?

A:W7 impossible - need XP back!

Well you bring up two questions. First is how to install Windows XP and second is should you keep windows 7 in the background.

To install Windows XP, insert the disk in your cd drive, reboot the computer, hit any key to boot from CD, and start the installation process. You have the option to use the whole drive or not. That sort of depends on whether you already have a Windows 7 disk available. If you're that unhappy, I'd simply install Windows XP and be done with it. Sounds like you're unable to get Windows 7 to work as you'd like it, why fight it?

As a cautionary note, make sure you BACK UP ANY DATA YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE prior to starting the installation of XP. Shortly MS WILL be discontinuing support for XP, but I believe that's in 2014. You still have some time.

One other potential option available to you is if you have Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate, or Enterprise, you are licensed to download and install Windows XP Mode which allows you to run both at the same time.

I'm having real problems with this and the guides online cover different parts but don't work.
1. I have windows xp
2. I want to install windows 7 64 bit
3. I do not have a dvd, it's on an external HDD
4. I want to instal windows 7 on a 2nd HDD and dual boot.

My first problem is that I get the 'We are unable to create or save new files in the folder which the application was downloaded'. Apparently this is because its 64 bit and I'm in XP. I need to boot from the USB drive and load the windows disk from there? Is that right? How do I do that without my normal XP booting? Can I boot from the USB and install on to the 2nd HHD?

A step by step approach would be amazing if someone could talk me through it? If it's not possible I can buy a blank dvd and burn it and remove my other HDDs, but that's a real pain.

Any help would be great

Hey,

So, ever since I got the update for it in Windows Update, like a few months ago, I could never install IE9 on my computer. I have tried every possible means to install it.

-Download the modified (B00IE8/IE9) package
-Download the 32Bit (x86) Upgrade package
-Using Windows Update

And after multiple attemtps, I'm still opening IE8. Don't get me wrong, I have Google Chrome and Firefox, but I would like to have everything on this computer upgraded so I don't need to look at it in Windows Update.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Hello people, I came to this forum in rage. This is so weird i can't help but scratch my head and watch in awe. Here's the deal:

Like most people here i have some sort of an internet black-out problem. My event log is full of error's considering DHCP unavailability and other connection problems. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. I reinstalled windows 7 Ultimate x64 two times, formated the disks 3 times each installation JUST in case, and when i start surfing on an absolutely CLEAN install the connection error pops up. Event Viewer says that the computer tries to connect to a dns server but apparently is timed out. I started safe mode with networking, and there was no problem. How the hell is this possible? Safe Mode with Net is no probs, clean instal, even with no drivers gives cutts me off the net! The other weird thing is that when this happens, i can't acces the Network and Sharing center,or anything that lists my adaptor! I can't even shut down the computer cuz it freezes during the shutdown process. From my research it appears that it's still hailing in hope to recieve an IP from the DHCP server. So i tried many method's i found in similar posts around the forums. Here's the list of things i did:

After seeing that safe mode runs internet with no problem (or maybe it didn't, i ran in safe mode for about 30-40 minutes,so i'm not 100% positive),while the clean install doesn't, i though it was because of the drivers.Updated them with the newest ones. There was no pro... Read more

This is going to be a long post. I'll start from the beginning.

Windows 7 (64 bit premium) came to my door today. I put it in my disc, logged on to my windows xp account. A pop up came up saying, "close any programs still on xp". So i googled how to do that, and it said to wipe my fdisk. I opened the console and did so, but that it didn't know if it was an external or internal command. So i googled another way to do it, and it get compmgmt.msc as a command to enter into my start>run thingy. I do that, and i go to disk management. Then i went to format, and hit the start button (not on the bottom of the screen, the little pop up window from format). Then it tells me i need to go to safe mode. I did, and went to the command prompt safe mode. I typed in fdisk, but got the same message as before. I hit restart, and went into regular safe mode. The other places i read about said to do it in administrator. The administrator had never been there before, and had just popped up. I hit enter on the password to see if it would go, but it wouldnt. so i hit restart, but this time windows 7 started up instead. Then i got stuck and froze my computer, so i restarted again. Then this message popped up before i get to the loading screen:

windows could not start becasue the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system\hal.dll.
please reinstall the above file.
now i've lost the windows xp disk, and many other websites have told me to just :re... Read more

You can't start setup from Windows. And you can't format the drive from which you are running Windows, any more than you can dig a hole in the ground you are standing on. You need to boot from the DVD and then remove the partitions when you have the option. After that, just follow the prompts.

There is no "fdisk" in Windows since around 10 years ago and it shouldn't be used on modern systems. Partitioning and formatting are part of setup. There are no messages from Windows 7 setup that mention fdisk, ever.

Hello boys and girls. About one year ago, my 500GB Western Digital MyBook hard drive died when I unplugged it from my motherboard. It lived a long life. It was time for it to die. I figured maybe a power surge killed it since I didn't "Safely remove the hardware". The computer it died on was built by myself. It was an Asus motherboard and a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OS. I was convinced that my data was lost, so I bought a 500GB Toshiba Canvio portable USB drive in the color black. I plugged it into a rear USB 2.0 port. It was recognized for about three seconds, and then Windows displayed a yellow popup from the bottom right corner of the taskbar saying "The device has malfunctioned". A new hard drive? Come on. I brought it downstairs to my dads Vista machine, and it worked just fine. I scratched my head, and for kicks, I tried my "dead" MyBook on the same machine. It worked! I could see all my data!

After this, I figured it was a bad motherboard. Since none of the ports on the computer were working with it. (Mind you, mice, flashdrives, printers, keyboards, hubs, etc. were all functioning fine on the system). It was ONLY mass storage USB devices that were not working. I waited about a year and built a new computer. New EVERYTHING. Windows 7 OS, Asus motherboard, and all that good stuff. I was so excited to finally be able to use my USB hard drive again. I missed my data. But... It didn't work. It makes the usb "Bee-boop" but will no... Read more

Hi there. Okay, this may seem needlessly complicated, but humour me.

I work at a school that has some students using a video program requiring the screen resolution to be set at a particular level (800x600 I'm told). The students do not have access to the Display Properties panel, presumable to stop them screwin around with any of the other settings.

Now, I've been told to find a setting in the windows registry that allows students access to the screen resolution property but NOT the actual Display Properties panel. Is this even possible?!? If so, any ideas on where the hell to find it? The OS is Windows XP.

If this isn't possible, does anyone have any suggestions for other solutions to this problem? Perhaps an app that allows access to certain aspects of the Display Properties settings?

Ok If anyone can help me with this i will be impressed

I play on an online game and i was recently key logged. I injected a DLL into the game, and inside the dll there was a key logger.
Only one virus scanner can identify it and i don't have the virus scanner (CPsecure).

The keylogger is called Troj.Gamethief.w32.wow.bwa

Heres how this thing works. Basically the key logger doesnt run UNLESS i inject it into my game.exe. So its not a threat to any other passwords, just my game one. I believe it sends my account/pass when i load it.

If i removed the dll the keylogger would be removed also, but i want to use this program so im trying to avoid that. The only solution i can come up with is using a hex editor to stop the function. But i am not familiar enough with hex editors to do this.

So i guess i need someone with hex editing knowledge to help me remove this. or someone who knows a program i havnt found on google yet.

Thanks

Hello!

For about 2-3 days now, it's become impossible to load certain websites. These websites include www.mediafire.com, and there is software called "Hamachi" to simulate a virtual lan server, which also won't connect at all. Hamachi gets stuck at "Probing" and mediafire.com completely fails to load. I have used websites like isitdown to check if mediafire is down for everyone of just me, and it's just me.

I have restarted the router 4-5 times, and I've tried accessing it from all computers in our home, but none of them work.

I am using Windows 8 and am with MWEB.

Please help,

A:Internet near impossible to use

That sounds like an ISP problem
it is quite likely blocked by your ISP
I have friends in SA who inform me that when they reach close to their monthly limits, sites like mediafire and other sharing sites get blocked
Most SA ISPs do severely limit what you can download and give what is seen in rest of the world as very low bandwith limits for a very expensive price

Check with ISP first
