Windows update redirected to google, anti-virus can't update, various anti-virus site connection terminated

Q: Windows update redirected to google, anti-virus can't update, various anti-virus site connection terminated

Hello, I'm not sure when this all started, but recently I've been having troubles in a very generalized area which has led me to believe I have contracted some kind of virus/rootkit.

When I ran a scan with ESET Antivirus 4, I tried to update the virus definitions and found I couldn't. I then tried to access www.eset.com. Firefox gives me a notification that the connection was terminated. I tried getting malwarebytes anti-malware from the official website, but that has the connection terminated as well. windowsupdate.microsoft.com redirects to google.com, but otherwise I haven't noticed much abnormal behavior. I've ran scans with ESET, Malwarebytes, A-squared, Sophos, and the Super antivirus site was terminated but I intended to try a scan with that one. Here's my hijack this log:

Preferred Solution: Windows update redirected to google, anti-virus can't update, various anti-virus site connection terminated

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello,

Firstly thank you for your help - I really do appreciate it.

My HpCompaq laptop is infected with a virus that is blocking multiple anti-spyware software, Vista updates, and even my Kaspersky anti-virus.

1) The virus does not allow me to access websites to download anti-spyware nor access the windows update site.

2) I have downloaded the following programs on another computer, burned on CD and run on my laptop:
- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Installed but does not run
- Spybot - Cannot install as access to the website is blocked during installation
- AVG Anti-Virus trial version - Cannot install due to 0x8007013d - Action failed for file avgmfx86.sys

3) I have managed to run CCleaner and clear out all the temp internet files

Hi

Anytime I click on a link from "Google" (which I have set as my homepage) I am redirected to www.av-online-scan.org/l3/index.html?ref_id=7048. This page gives various warnings that my PC is infected with spyware and viruses and invites me to "erase all threats" by clicking on a button, which of course I've not clicked!

I can, however, go directly to websites if I want (i.e., without searching using "Google")

Any help getting rid of this problem would be much appreciated. If any further details are required, please let me know.

HJT log included below in case this is of help.

Thanks

DJ

Yesterday I got a failed update message from my AVG antivirus protection. I'm not very computer savvy but what little I did to try to fix it, didn't work. The task bar icon just has a red exclamation point on it.

Also my SuperAntispyware software came up with an microsoft error message when I tried to run it. For some reason I thought uninstalling it would be a good idea, thinking I would just install it again. Well now I can't access any anit virus or spyware sites at all. So now I don't even have that.

Than today when I use google, I get the different choices, but every single site I click on opens up another window to a completely unrelated page.

I did what was suggested here and downloaded hijackthis so I could get a copy of my HJT log so I could copy and paste it here. As far as I know I downloaded it fine, but for some reason when I click on run, nothing happens. I see the little hour glass for a few seconds and than it disappears but no new window opens. Is there another way I can access the HJT log?

I also downloaded malwarbytes today, but that doesn't seem to be doing anything either. Just like the HJT log, nothing happens when I click on open or run.

I'm using windows XP and IE brower on my laptop. I had to use my desk top to wrtie this message as most sites I click on just say page cannot be found.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I've tried playing around with my firewall and getting several different anti virus programs. AVG, avast, macafee, malwarebytes all will not update. The only program that will is spybot s&d. Also about 50% of the time I click on a link on google it redirects to various websites, some reported as malicious by firefox and avast.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

This was a nasty virus. I would attempt to run windows update but it would give me an error code and told me to check my connection. Norton would not update. Most free AV I could download but not update. When I would do any search on Google or MSN, it would redirect. It would also give me a google page does not exist if I went to a windows download update sit. After 2 days of working on this issue and using every AV I could find, I stumbled across a google group addressing this problem. It said to access this website, http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Trojan-Remover.shtml This trojan was nasty but the program took about 5 minutes and cleared it. I didn't even have to go into safe mode. If your having this same issue, give this a shot before reinstalling anything, Hope it helps.

I have a nasty if not multiple nasty virus's and have not been successful removing them. It started with the XP Anti-Virus 2011 Removal fake anti-virus popping up with all real anti-virus programs disabled and anytime I try to go to an antivirus website I'm redirected to a random site. This happens in all browsers not just Internet Explorer. I also had many of my files changed to hidden file folders and also the start/all programs button does not show any of my programs. I mananged to get both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware on my computer and was able to get rid of much of the problems by running these programs. Now it seems the XP Anti-Virus 2011 has been removed but I still have the issue with my webpages being redirected depending on which page I try to access. I also have many processes that should not be running in the task manager and when i close them out they just start back up again. This worm seems to be accessing my iexplorer because there are multiple iexplorer.exe open at all times and sometimes the CPU Usage gets very high which is not normal for my computer. The final symptom is that at random times I get a webpage pop up or if not a webpage an error that reads like the following example:

An error has occured in the script on this page.

Char: 1
Error: Object doesnt support this property or method

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

Hi everyone,

Just an fyi regarding yesterday's Microsoft KB2823324 update. For those of you running Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Workstations / Server version 6.0.4.1424 and 6.0.4.1611 you will find if you have installed the updated that you either get the message you have a corrupt database or an invalid license. This will cause Kaspersky to stop working.

For more information follow this link: Update KB2823324 - Kaspersky Lab Forum

Thanks,

Hello, alpopa
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .

We need to create an OTViewIt ReportPlease download OTViewIt by OldTimer.
Save it to your desktop.
Double click on the icon on your desktop.

Hi

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

My system has started freezing and locking up moments after booting. Task manager will not work, anti-virus is automatically disabled and will not enable, windows update will not update at all and I have noticed many "file missing" notes in hijackthis logs that previously were not missing. Please help! I use my computer for work and currently cannot rely on it in the state it is in. This problem just started and I will need it this coming week for work use. What's going on?? Thanks in advance!! Here are the logs, also Attach.txt has been attached.

I am running windows xp and I am running into two major problems:

The first problem is that I am trying to update windows microsoft and it won't update. The message that I am getting is:

The following updates were not installed. Update for microsoft XML core services 4.0 service pack 2 (KB973688) security update for microsoft XML core services 4.0 service pack 2 (KB954430)

My second problem is:

I have been trying to install my anti-virus program which is System Suite 12 professional made by a company called Avanquest. Everytime I try to install it the windows installer box keeps popping up trying to install but nothing happens. I keep getting these messages:

System Suite

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'systemsuite msi' in the box below.
c:/programfiles\avanquest\systemsuite\{4AF1AB45-6F47-49F4-B596-F9EE88920CB56}

and this message:

Error 1706 No valid source could be found for product systemsuite. The windows installer cannot continue

This path could not be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'SystemSuite msi' in a folder from which you can install the product System Suite.

Please HELP!

A:[SOLVED] Can't update windows and install anti-virus progrm

Are you trying to install Avanquest from a CD or from a Download? If it is a download, the download file is corrupt. Contact Avanquest and have them send you another. If you are downloading from CD, the CD might be dirty or scratched. Clean it off before trying to install. Then open the CD and find the .msi file and double click it to install the product. Or you can ditch that software and use the free Microsoft Security Essentials which is not as bloated and does just as good a job.

As for the Updates, you can download the Stand Alone version of each update instead of the Windows update.

Good evening and thanks for taking time to help me out.
I am trying to clean a laptop that has had several users over the last year and seems to be infected.
The first step I took was to reinstall many drivers which seem to been uninstalled. For example I had to reinstall the wireless drives to get online! The SM Bus driver as well as the Bluetooth and some sound drivers also needed to be reinstalled.

The machine had Kaspersky Anti Virus which seems to have expired or perhaps disabled. As I was unable to get Kaspersky to start I removed it and tried to install AVG Anti Virus (Free version) despite my best efforts AVG would not install.
I tried to find a working System Restore point but ?System Restore? was unavliable (the whole System Restore tab did not appear at all). I then went to Windows Updates to try and get any updates but this too seemed to freeze for about an hour.
I tried to run online virus scans at Housecall and Kaspersky but both pages are showing up us unavailable. So I downloaded Firefox (in case IE was the problem) but still no luck with the online virus scans.
I downloaded Spbybot Search and Destroy and after running the clean up I could see System Restore but I still could not install AVG.
I decided to install Comodo Firewall and Anti Virus which thankfully installed without any drama. However I have been unable to update the Anti Virus ? it keeps stalling at 30%.
Please give me some advice on what you would recommend.

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help as i'm going mad with this problem. I was infected with a virus earlier in the week. Can't remember name but I couldn't open any exe files and it kept saying my system was infected and to buy some anti virus software. I uses tdr killer and malwarebytes to sort this problem.

However something still seems to be lingering. I cannot access most anti virus sites and forums or windows update site. If I go to windows update page it says page not found. If I go to the anti virus sites then I get redirected to generic sites. All other sites and links seem to be working fine. Just seems to want to keep me away from sites where I may find out how to kill it. I thought it may have been confickr and downloaded kasperskys tool for removal but it detected no virus. It is becoming a real inconvenience and I'm guessing it is doing something much more behind the scenes other than just blocking these sites. . Have tried several malware, spyware detectors but without luck so far. Please help

Thanks

Kieran

To add,

I have windows xp sp3, using chrome as main browser but affects IE too. Have found a few people with similar problemds and think I have tried most of suggested solutions including SDFix. Only thing I haven't is combofix as I heard this can be dangerous if not done properly.

When I try to do windows update it just keeps saying searching for update, even if I leave it scanning for a day and a half, and if I try to do a Norton anti-virus patch application the computer says applying patch application for up to a day, by then I'm tiered of waiting, and I end up having to turn it off manually because I can't even get Ctrl, Alt, Delete to work. Someone, not from this site, tried to help me and said I had a virus called the Zeus Trojan and wanted to charge me money to fix it, but I don't know if  I believe them, cause they just called me up out of the blue and said I had it after doing one scan, and I not even sure how much I can trust them. PCs running Avast anti-virus left bricked after new Windows updateHordes of users using Avast Anti Virus software have found that their PCs, especially those running Windows 8 and 8.1, grind to a halt after they applied both Microsofts recent KB3000850 update and Avasts latest automatic updates...Avast has been hard at work trying to figure out why the combinations of a recent update of Windows & Avasts own update was causing machines running their software to break down completely. An update in the above Techworm article refers to this avast topic...Lastest Windows Update Problems which indicates member pk has advised a patch has been released.pk on November 20, 2014, 09:13:37 PMWe have been able to simulate the problem in our lab and I think we fixed this issue. This Windows updates calls new memory related functions which are not fully compatible with avast. We'll prepare EmUpdate with the patched driver tomorrow morning (it means, all & new avast installations should be patched immediately, that's how it works). Thanks to NickAu1 and the MVP [mvpsectalk] channel for the heads up.

A:PCs running Avast anti-virus left bricked after new Windows update

Glad that I removed Avast from my 8.1 Pro install when Grinler posted the 6 month BitDefender promo.

If not, mine may have been a casualty also. That was also the last Avast install I had, the reasoning beyond the scope of this Topic.

Thanks for the creation of this Topic.  Avast is still, despite starting to earn a bad reputation in some respects, quite popular with many & a top Free choice. Consumers needs to be aware of these things, and if it weren't for these forums, many would be clueless until it's too late.

Few days ago, my computer got this "antispyware" virus (i am presuming) that rendered the internet explorer and any other files and programs useless. Everything I did directed me to pay to buy the antispyware. I am guessing to still my credit card info. Anyway, I did not fall for this. Took it to my school's IT who stopped the virus from attacking just long enough to run my malwarebyte. It caught some infections. I removed it and it worked fine for a day until it came back. Only this time, it seemed "weaker" in that I didn't need to take it to the IT to stop the virus now. When I rebooted, I opened malwarebyte as quickly as I could, ran it, found some more stuff and removed them. The pop up in the taskbar for antispyware and message about password stealing trojan stopped, and everything seemed to be working fine. Except two things started happening soon afterward. 1) google and yahoo searches are now being redirected. Started out infrequent. Now all searches are redirected. and 2) after working on my computer for a long time, in the taskbar, the red shield with X comes up saying my antivirus (Norton) is outdated. I would check and find it says antivirus is outdated. First time it happened, I thought maybe it needs updating. So I updated the antivirus. Message went away. I thought it was fixed. Then the very next day, again, after working on my computer for few hours, same thing. Now I know it is a problem because why would my antivirus become outda... Read more

AVG has released a 7MB update today, which is much larger than the normal 50-70K. This applies to the free edition. To get this update, double click the AVG Icon near the clock, click Update Manager when the Control Center pops up and then click Update. A restart is required after the update completes.

All I get when i hit the update now button in Zone Alarm programme is an "error cannot connect" message. Once you are inside the 'etc' folder, right click on the 'hosts' file and choose Open With'. From the list choose 'Notepad'.3. Now inspect the file it should only list one line with written: "127.0.0.1 Localhost" if you see something else than that post it here.and there was a load of stuff in the fole. so I have run the RSIT report & here are the results:LOG NOTEPAD OUTPUTLogfile of random's system information tool 1.04 (written by random/random)Run by Jane Moore at 2008-12-06 12:51:31Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3System drive C: has 113 GB (64%) free of 176 GBTotal RAM: 958 MB (41% free)Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 12:51:46, on 06/12/2008Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16735)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\s... I run Windows 7 Professional and last Tuesday when there was Windows Update was when things started to go odd. First the anti-virus and Windows Defender kept shutting off because the updates were installing, but one of the updates couldn't install. So it would try again a few hours later. I finally rebooted thinking that would make the update take place. When rebooting it said it was doing the updates and after that it would reboot (was on the shut down screen). When I booted back up later there was still one update that needed to be installed (an important one it said) but when I tried to install it it had trouble and said the update failed. I also noticed that my downloads in my browsers were not working (it would remove the download as soon as it finished .. tried with 3 browsers but it seems unrelated as others are having this issue just recently as well). I rebooted again last night thinking it might update then but this time it didn't. I booted the computer after I had it off all last night and that one update still needs to update and the anti-virus now can't be found and Window Defender was not enabled but I reenabled it and that is running. The problem is I can't just download an anti-virus and install it as my browser still won't download. So now I am typing this without any anti-virus contemplating going to the store to buy ESET or Bit Defender or something. I was using Windows Security Essentials (that is why it could possibly be related to the... Read more

My Kapersky anti-virus would not update and after talking to a Kapersky technician, I was informed that the 2013 Kapersky anti-virus software has a problem on Windows 8 when there is a wireless connection.  I was able to download the Kapersky 2014 anti-virus software which is supposed to correct the problem and it seems to be working great, now.

Hi guys,

my wife's computer is facing a problem. I just uninstalled Avast and installed Microsoft Essentials, but to my surprise the programe cannot connect to update centre. I only get error code 0x80072efd. The same is with Ad aware and Spybot. Also, there are many microsoft sites, security related, I cannot access.

I couldn't acces Malwarebytes site eighter, so I downloaded the programme on my computer and installed it on wife's. The instalation went well, but when trying to update, there is again no connection error.

I scanned the computer with Malwarebytes, without updating it, and it found 9 trojans --> 2x Trojan.Agent and 7x Trojan.DNSchanger

There are also Firefox windows popping up - empty or with some advertising.

Is there anything else I can do?

Thank you
