Windows vista (32bit) KSOD/Can't reinstall windows

Q: Windows vista (32bit) KSOD/Can't reinstall windows

Hello.
I have an Acer Aspire 6920G, which has recently developed a KSOD. It could be related to AVG, since it was prompting me to restart for a while before I shut down the computer. However, after attempting several fixes, (including renaming all of AVGs folders and the driver) I decided to just reinstall windows. After backing up my files with a Linux live CD, I noticed a problem. On this laptop, you can only reinstall windows through D2D (Disc to Disc). In my carelessness, I failed to notice one of the attempted KSOD fixes had reverted the Acer MBR to the Windows MBR, stopping me from booting into the hidden D2D partition (and the windows recovery tools). I have no other way of reinstalling windows, so I thought I'd ask what I should do here. From what I see, I either have to restore the Acer MBR (which seems impossible without windows) fix the KSOD, then fix the MBR in windows, or figure out how to boot into the hidden D2D partition Any thoughts? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Windows vista (32bit) KSOD/Can't reinstall windows

seeing as you are running a factory made machine, im guessing you don't have an actual vista installation disc. in that case, i would try and either bring it to a tech and see if they can do something or bring it back to acer. try installing a different AV once you get it back.

Yes, I know that I cannot install 64 bit Windows on a 32 bit CPU. The PC has a 64 bit CPU but a 32 bit UEFI. This was a cheap PC-on-a-stick that was on sale for black friday for $70. I tested OSes on it but now I want to reinstall Windows. I have a Windows recovery disk, but when I try to install, it says that my disk is too small (Its 32GB). Can anyone help?

A:Windows 10 64bit reinstall on 32bit UEFI Only PC

You can normally only install 32bit OS as the bootloader is 32bit.

You may need to create a 32bit usb installation stick to reinstall.

More significantly perhaps you may need some special drivers not in standard MS isos. What OS do you have at the moment, and how did you create the recovery disk?

more specs found at bestbuy.com with the sku: 2686552 into the search field, or from a general internet search

its pretty new to best buy, but I was wondering if its possible to create a system image/iso or something to reinstall the OS to the 32 bit version.

The OEMs nowadays seem to want to leave the recovery options on a partitioned part of the main drive and want you to create 'recovery disks' for OS backup protection.
I have proprietary software that can only run on the 32bit vers on windows 7 (the machine comes with home premium 64 bit).
I understand the total memory usage limitations. But I am not concerned with that and the machines only purpose is to run this software.

Called HP they said the 64 designation was 'locked' into the 'motherboard chip' as they called it, and it can be turned back to 32bit. The guy didn't know and found this answer from his supervisor. Sounds like a load of b.s. to get me off the phone with giving a solidly researched response. Idk to me it just sounds innaccurate from my understanding.

I've reinstalled OS's before on many laptops but they were with my own copies of windows that I had the installation disks for.

If its not possible to create a system image/iso from the backup files or the OS itself would it work if i use an installation disk (of the exact same version and same service pack=none)that I already own to re-install the windoes 7 home premium select the 32... Read more

Hello zedeck, welcome to Seven Forums!

Here's some interesting info you may find useful, and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media; if you can find an exact Windows version that the PC shipped with you can do a clean install using the activation key on the COA sticker attached to the PC though it may require a robo-call to MS to sort the OEM batch-key.

How to Activate Windows 7 by Phone
If you can't find an exact same version, you could use the info in this tutorial to create an "all versions" installer of any version Windows installer, to install using the same method I posted above.

After you have made backups of everything you care to save, the best method is to do a complete wipe (secure erase) of the entire Hard Disk Drive first, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including all the old drivers/programs, giving you the best possible space to install Windows to.

When I purchased this generic computer I expected a clean installed version of Windows 7 x32bit. However what I received was a version updated from Vista. I have the Vista disk and a "Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program"disk, both with product keys.
My C drive (250Gb) contains only the operating system and programs, D drive (500Gb) is data only and F drive (External 1Tb) is used for backup.
I backup weekly including a system image. I do not have A "System Reserved" partition.
If at some time in the future I need to do a Re Format and Clean Install will I have to reinstall Vista, Update it and then use the Windows 7 disk or is there an alternative? I hope it never happens but I want to be prepared.

A:Clean Reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium x 32bit

You can do that, but if you can get full installation media from your OEM, you could also use that. The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program disc came from the OEM that sold the original machine to the original owner - they purchased it with Vista right before Win7 was available, and got the upgrade disc for free. I can't say I've ever actually seen one, but from the description it sounds like any other upgrade disc. There is a tutorial here for installing clean from an upgrade disc, so you might be able to try that.

It more than likely can do x64 without knowing something about your hardware no one can be certain. Most chips made since the introduction of vista do support 64 bit though. The only real question is if your cpu runs 64 bit instructions or not.

Hello,

I have another laptop and its a HP 2230s. I originally installed Windows 7 professional 64bit. But I have swapped the ram into my Lenovo ThinkPad. So the HP now has 2GB. I created a new partition and installed Vista Business 32bit on it. When I started the install windows .exe program in Windows 7, everything went well until it rebooted. When I rebooted, windows said something like:

Windows Boot manager:

The system cannot boot because of a recent change to files/hardware. (Something like that). Insert your windows disk.

So I just rebooted my laptop with the vista disk inside and installed. After, when everything was working, I wanted to go to the Windows 7 partition to un-install programs and copy some files over to the vista partition, the laptop just booted into vista.

I downloaded the easy BCD editior and visual BCD editor. (in the vista partition), I clicked the auto fix in visual BCD editor. It detected my windows installations. At the boot screen, I can select either Windows 7 or Vista. But when I select 7, the same error message appears.

Then I rebooted my laptop with a USB containing the Windows 7 (64bit) recovery tools. After, I don't have the message again. But when it goes to the starting windows animation, it stops halfway and it gets a BSOD. I tried debugging mode, it worked.

I found out that the larger partition, (Windows 7) is the C: drive. But when I boot into the smaller partition, (Windows Vista), the drive is also C:!. So I do... Read more

I am in a bit of a pickle. I shall start to tell you my tale, and you can see if you can help me. About a month or so ago I dug out an older pc running Windows XP. This computer is loaded with old software that I neither have the time, nor gumption to track down and reinstall. This install works just fine. So I made a ghost image of it, and backed it up. Fast forward to today, I am trying to use a piece of software that requires Vista, and will not run on Windows xp. I thought "I have that ghost image, why not try to see if I can upgrade this pc to Vista (as foolish as that sounds), a weekend project, one might think." Well, I am running into some issues (surprise, surprise), I start the Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit (either 32 or 64 bit, does the same thing), it says checking system, etc, then when I starts the installer it freezes and the installer.exe goes into not responding. (I checked this with Task Manager), and no matter if I load it off of a DVD, a USB thumbdrive, or off a partition on the hard drive (fastest read/write time), it always freezes. Now, on a lark I threw in a blank drive into the computer, and I am able to install a fresh copy of Vista no issues. So it isn't the hardware, isn't the installation media, it isn't the phase of the moon. Something about the Windows xp install isn't letting it continue. Now, since Vista is coming up on twelve years old, certain documentation on the Microsoft website as been phased out, 404d and etc. I am trying to track down a... Read more

I would surmise you need to wipe the existing XP partitions before installing Vista. Replace your XP drive. Boot Vista and at the screen that asks for language press Shift + F10. This will open a command prompt. Type the following commands.

list disk
select disk X     Where X is the number associated with the disk you will be installing Vista to. If you only have one drive it will be 0.
clean                 This will delete all existing partitions and set the drive for a clean install so perhaps you should be sure your ghost image is good.
exit                    Exits diskpart
exit                    Exits command prompt

Best place to check is the Customization subforum. You can look for threads I posted as a starting point. There are links in there to themes you can download from the Deviant Art website as well as a program you can download and run that starts a service for using third-party themes, thus saving you from having to hack existing system files.

Make sure when you do downloads, that you download themes, not themepacks. The latter are for Seven, and AFAIK, may not work on Vista.

Also, understand that theme customization will only change the look of the windows and desktop. You won't be able to get Seven-specific features simply by installing a theme.

I plan on getting Windows 8 64bit upon its release. However, I am confused as to what license I will require.

I currently have a HP laptop (pavilion dv6760ea) running Windows Vista 32bit.

I will be upgrading the laptop HDD to a SSD and also (hopefully) upgrading to Windows 8 64bit.

My plan is to do the following:

install the new SSD,
re-install Windows Vista 32bit (also have a question regarding this too, see below*),
upgrade from Vista 32bit to Windows 8 64bit (via custom installation).

All my data will already be backed up due to the drive swap, so losing any data is not a problem, all I need to know is that it is possible to upgrade using an Upgrade license of Windows 8 64bit.

Or, will I need a full OEM license of Windows 8 and start from scratch?

* Question regarding re-installing Windows vista;

As the laptop originally came with a 250GB HDD with a HP custom install of Windows Vista, and I will be fitting a 128GB SSD, I don't think I can use the original recovery disc as it will not be able to use the same drive partition settings (something like 9gb for recovery).

Can I instead use a plain standard (legal) copy of the Vista installation disc and use the Windows license key from the bottom of the laptop? Or will this flag as an invalid license key when validating Windows?

Thanks in advance for your replies, if any further information is required I'd be happy to try and provide that.

Andy.

Hello everyone,
I have downloaded the 64bit version of Windows 7 RC and I am having trouble running the executable within Windows Vista Business Edition 32bit. The pop up error message says: "This version of the file is not compatible with the Windows it is being executed on. According to your computer's system properties determine which version of the software you need x86(32bit) or x64(64bit) then contact the software developer."
Therefore I decided to run the executable before Windows started but when I insert its DVD into my first driver it did not read and proceeded as it was a normal Windows Vista start. After I have decided to change boot device numbers and priorities via BIOS I noticed that one of my optical drivers ,which used to be on the list, was not there. What may have caused this and what is the remedy? By the way I have managed to run the installation disk with the help of the other optical driver. I can access all drivers via Windows interface without any problem.)
Additionally I wonder if I should delete Windows Vista completely prior to installation to avoid any conflicts? Because one is 32bit and the never one is 64bit. Thanks in advance for your contributions.

A:Windows Vista 32bit & Windows 7 RC 64bit

You will have to do a clean install as you cannot upgrade from 32 to 64 bit. I also would recommend that you install in a dual boot. That way if something goes wrong with W7 (it is still in the testing phase) or something doesn't work for you in 7, you will still have Vista to fall back on.

Will increasing my desktop resolution have any effect on gaming performance? The reason I ask is because I recently had my computer worked on for performance issues (game frame rate) and one of the things the tech did was to decrease my desktop resolution to 1280x1024. However, both my monitor and video card support 1440x900 which looks a whole lot better.

A:Windows Vista 32bit Help

yea for one thing your monitor is widescreen and 1440 x 900 is hardly any difference from 1280 x 1024 ( the tech was stupid)

1280 x 1024 = 1,310,720 pixels
1440 x 900 = 1,296,000 pixels

yes the higher the resolution the more graphically intensive it will be

post your specs
RAM
CPU
Graphics card
Motherboard
PSU

if you don't know your specs just post your Dxdiag

start
type dxdiag
save as a log file
post as an attachment here

if you want to change your resolution do this

right click on any open space on your desktop
personalize
then display settings

I hope you didn't pay for that stupid tech guy or girl

Hello there, I took my friends pc as he said it wasn't working, so after finding the hard drive curropt I tried a fresh install of windows.

First of all I completely formatted the drive using my current computer so the drive was empty.

I placed the drive back into the original computer Acer ASPIRE M3641 upon installation it asks me for Nvidia cd/dvd drives, so I made a disk containing them and then tried installing again. It asks me for the drivers and for me to put the disk in the computer, I do this but the installation doesn't scan the new disk, so I can't actually choose the drivers...

So I thought ok I would put the drivers into the disk image and try installing that way. No same problem, it's almost as if the "browse" screen on the installation is already programmed in.... It doesn't make any sense.

It comes up with 4 removable drives and a drive called "boot" (this is not the disks name... or the drives name..) I have tried 3 installation cds and it's all the same... I have tried installing Windows XP but I just got a blue screen...

Is there a hidden ACER file on this hdd stopping me or something?

Hi CurtismusPrime:
If your initial "Checking for updates..." phase of Windows Update hangs for long periods of time without throwing an error, this is a widespread problem that currently affects many Vista SP2 and Win 7 SP1 users.
Some users find that "Checking for updates..." will eventually run to completion if you let it run for several hours, but there is also a workaround posted on Dalai's webpage at http://wu.krelay.de/en/ that speeds up Windows Update for most affected users. This workaround requires users to pre-install the Windows kernel-mode driver (Win32K.sys) updates listed on that webpage if any are missing from your system before running Windows Update.  I've used Dalai's workaround for the past four Patch Tuesdays (the second Tuesday of each month) and it's reduced my "Checking for updates..." search for available updates from several hours down to approx. 25 min.
The step-by-step instructions posted 16-Jun-2016 in m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours are based on Dalai's workaround and will guide you through the process of installing the standalone update packages (.msu files) for your missing Win32K.sys update(s).
As of 13-Sep-2016 the current list of required Win32K.sys updates listed on Dalai's webpage is: KB3078601 (rel. 18-Aug-2015); KB3109094 (rel. 07-Dec-2015); KB3145739 (rel. 12-Apr-2016); KB3164033 (rel. 14-Jun-2016); KB3168965 (rel. 12-Jul-2016); KB3185911 (rel. 13-Sep-2016).  You only have to instal... I noticed that after my computer starts up from restart/shut down to the desktop,
half of my start up programs load, says that I am not connected to the internet, and half of my icons in the bottom right of my taskbar aren't right-clickable. Yet, I can still access the internet via IE or Firefox. But other programs won't launch if I try to run them (iTunes, WoW, Microsoft Word).
I give it a minute or two, and then everything else starts up, including the programs I tried to start up during phase I described above. It tells me I am connected to the internet, and everything on my taskbar is clickable again.
I've tried every combination of start up programs to see if it was a specific program starting up that was stalling the rest of them to. Anybody explain this phenomena?

Hello everyone! I am new to this so please bear with me. I bought windows 7 from newegg, however, I did not know it was Windows 7 OEM System Builders Pack. I am upgrading my motherboard from ASUS M3A78-CM to ASUS M5A78L-MLX Plus before I install windows. I can't replace my hard drive because one of the screws is stuck so I am installing windows 7 on my windows vista hard drive. Do i need to wipe my hard drive before I upgrade my motherboard and install Windows 7? Or can I reformat it while installing Windows 7?

A:Upgrading to Windows 7 64bit from Vista 32bit

Welcome to the forum!

Take your Pick
- If you boot with the OEM disk it will force a clean install anyhow, but you'll have the option of preserving the current installation in a folder inside the new install (so you can transfer data out of it before deletion).

You'll also have the option to format the drive before installing Windows 7 clean.

I am trying to format 2 new Western Digital (2 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARS) harddrives in my current system as backup drives...however when I go through disk management, I can create a partition *sometimes*, other times I get an I/O error. If I make it through the partition stage (attempting two partitions on each drive), it will not format on the second partition - it locks at 9% everytime. I have managed to format the first partition on each, but the system doesn't recognize the drive outside of the disk management utility. I checked the WD site for utilities/software or possible install issues, and the only thing questionable could be the jumper setting - but based on the guide, i should have had the default setting (no jumpers) so I can't figure out what i have done wrong during the install/format. Can anyone offer any suggestions/fixes?

Thanks!

If anyone knows how to resolve this issue, please let me know.

When I click on the updates to install, the window turns white and the hour glass keeps turning, nothing happens.... to close the window, I need to manualy shut it down using the task manager.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

I've tried system restore and that does not work.

Is there anyway to reset the windows system update?

Alright i'm gonna ask another question about my wier'd new i7 System.

After a week i got my Computer my windows started to behave wierdly after X houers after Boot. It's not heavy lagg or anything like that, but its micro stutter and slower Load of windows it selfs and NOT in GAMES.

There's not any programs, overheating, heavyload what so EVER, that causes the suttering after 1-24 houers after boot.

I know that when i got my computer i had an wierd Squeling / buzzing sound from the cpu area wich made me crazy, so i went to bios and turn'd of this " CPU enhanced HALT, wich lowers the CPUS frequenzy's when idle. This made the capasitors make wierd noise when scrolling and being generally active in windows. but this is not the case.

Could that HALT be the problem? cause i can't tell it was any sign of micro stuttering or slow Tray icon load before i turnd it of . Haven't tried to Put it back on, cause the sound doesn't really help my mood at all.

I have also had a few complete Computer lock that requires Shutdown/reboot to fix, i got a GA-x58-USB3 MBO with i760 3.3ghz and Gainward 560TI, 1333mhz ram ( Ordered kingston 1600's last week ).

Also, my 1333mhz sticks show's at 1066mhz in bios wich makes no sense, their in fact 1333mhz, My bet would be the ram's? That stil doesnt make sense though, since this happens RANDOMLY after boot Several houers, up to couple of days.

HI,

You have two options at this stage. One is shorter and cleaner, the other longer and harder.

1. Factory restore your PC.

The way to restore Gateways is to hold down the ALT Key and repeatedly hitting f10 then it should bring you to a boot sequence screen then choose the HDD and then hold down ALT and repeatedly hit f10 again that should prompt the restore feature for gateway.

This will destroy all information and installed applications on your PC, you should back up any important data on external media (DVD, flash dish, USB HDD) before doing this.

2. Start a malware removal thread

You can attempt to remove the malware with assistance of one of our trained advisors here.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.
Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.
If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report... Read more

Hi,

Ever since I downloaded automatically two updates (KB2524375 and KB2505189 on March 24th), I have had delays in opening up Windows Mail (Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2); printing to my hp laserjet 1012; and, sometimes saving to my disk.

Is there something in those updates that has corrupted my Windows Mail; is Microsoft forcing me to Windows Live with Windows 7?; or, is something else happening here?

Thanks...Ted
